Did you ever say "Yes, sure I can!" to something, only to realize moments later thatyou should never have said those words? A friend asks you to join a volunteercommittee.
"Yes, sure I canl"-and then you remember you have absolutely no time to spare.Or a buddy shooting hoops with you bets you can't make the next shot. "Yes, sure I
can!"-and then you realize you're way too far from the basket to have a chance. Oryour spouse asks if you can fix the leaky faucet. "Yes, sure I canl"-and then afterone twist of the wrench, you know you should have called a plumber.
I wonder whether James and John had that same feeling of regret after theyinstantly replied "We can!" to Jesus' question, "Can you drink the cup that I drink?" I
wonder whether they saw a knowing look on Jesus' face-and then realized theyprobably shouldn't have answered so quickly.
Jesus knew they didn't understand how difficult drinking that cup would be. Theirfocus was on gaining a place of honor for themselves rather than on the self-sacrifice required to drink Jesus'cup.
lf Jesus asked us "Can you drink the cup that I drink?," would we be as quick toanswer "Yes, sure I canl"? We should answer so confidently only if we're fullyprepared to do as Jesus did-to live as a servant. Parents, do you serve yourchildren? Bosses, do you serve your employees?
Teachers, do you serve your students? lt's a completely different model ofauthority than we're taught in our culture.
Yet it's the cup we're asked to drink if we are to follow the Lord.

d c ar PAD Rf,
@ I'm .15
years old. My parents were diuorced last year, and thq'regetting an annulment. They told me this will mean that in the
eyes of the Church, they were neuer married. Is that true? Aftertlrcir marriage is annulled, will the Church consider me to be
born out of wedlock? JoAnne
DearJoAnne,
No. Annulment is not a declaration by the Church that a
marriage didn't exist. It's a declaration that the marriagewas never sacramental, which is different from saying itwasn't legal. Couples must get a civil divorce before theycan apply for annulment, because annulment doesn'taffect the legality of their marriage
Catholics believe marriage is a sign of God's never
ending love and faithfulness. Therefore, marriages are
indissoluble; a marriage ends only when a spouse dies-unless the marriage wasn't sacramental, which is wherethe annulment comes in.
Contrary to popular belief annulment is not a liturgicaldivorce. It's an investigation into a marriage to see
whether it was sacramental. If the Church determinesthat something essential was missing from the marriageright from the start, it grants the annulment. TheChurch is saying that although the couple were legally
married, they were not sdcrdmentally matned.
Your parents were legally married in the eyes of thestate, so you were not born out of wedlock in either thestate's or the Church's eyes.

A monk does not just study dogmas; he lives by them. When he reads the Holy Scripture or the patristic writings,
he is not doing it to gain knowledge but to learn a language ofineffable words with which God speaks through one's prayer.
