DAILY RECITATION OF THE ROSARY

SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 - 3 - TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice.
Fr. Ed
By the time the Lord made woman, He
was into his sixth day of working overtime. An
angel appeared and said, "Why are you
spending so much time on this one?"
And the Lord answered, "Have you seen
my spec sheet on her? She has to be
completely washable, but not plastic, have
over 200 movable parts, all replaceable and
able to run on diet coke and leftovers, have a
lap that can hold four children at one time,
have a kiss that can cure anything from a
scraped knee to a broken heart-and she will do everything with
only two hands."
The angel was astounded at the requirements.
"Only two hands!? No way! And that's just on the standard
model? That's too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow
to finish."
But I won't," the Lord protested. "I am so close to finishing
this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals
herself when she is sick AND can work 18 hour days."
The angel moved closer and touched the woman. "But you
have made her so soft, Lord."
"She is soft," the Lord agreed, "but I have also made her
tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."
"Will she be able to think?", asked the angel.
The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will
be able to reason and negotiate."
The angel then noticed something, and reaching out,
touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak
in this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into
this one."
"That's not a leak," the Lord corrected, "that's a tear!"
"What's the tear for?" the angel asked.
The Lord said, "The tear is her way of
expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her
disappointment, her love, her loneliness, her
grief and her pride."
The angel was impressed. "You are a genius,
Lord. you thought of everything! Woman is
truly amazing."
And she is!
Women have strengths that amaze men. They
bear hardships and they carry burdens, but
they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want
to scream. They sing when they want to cry. They cry when
they are happy and laugh when they are nervous. They fight for
what they believe in. They stand up to injustice. They don't take
"no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have. They go to the doctor
with a frightened friend. They love unconditionally. They cry
when their children excel and cheer when their friends get
awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a
wedding. Their hearts break when a friend dies. They grieve at
the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think
there is no strength left. They know that a hug and a kiss can
heal a broken heart. Women come in all shapes, sizes and
colors. They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how
much they care about you. The heart of a woman is what makes
the world keep turning. They bring joy, hope and love. They
have compassion and ideals. They give moral support to their
family and friends. Women have vital things to say and
everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

FEAST OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS
SAINT OF THE DAY FOR OCTOBER 2
THE STORY OF THE FEAST OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS
Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents
as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers
real and imagined. Yet guardian angels are not only for children.
Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over
them always, to aid their prayer, and to present their souls to
God at death.
The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each
human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety
based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus’ words in
Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: “See that you do not
despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels
in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”
Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the
monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and Saint
Bernard of Clairvaux, the great 12th-century reformer, was such
an eloquent spokesman for the guardian angels that angelic
devotion assumed its current form in his day.
A feast in honor of the guardian angels was first observed in the
16th century. In 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman
calendar.
REFLECTION
Devotion to the angels is, at base, an expression of faith in
God’s enduring love and providential care extended to each
person day in and day out.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 - 7 - TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
PRAYING THE OUR FATHER
Tertillian tells us that practically the whole teaching of
Christianity is summed up in the Lord’s Prayer. On that
foundation we can build our private prayers for
whatever we really need.
Just a few succinct words, but how much they contain of what
the prophets, the Gospels, and the Apostles said! How many of
the speeches, examples, and parables of the Lord! How many
duties are dealt with at once!
The honor of God in the “Father”;
The witness of faith in the “Name”;
The offering of obedience in the “Will”;
The remembrance of hope in the “Kingdom”;
The complete admission of our sins in the prayer to Forgive”;
The watchful fear of temptation in the “Lead us not . . .”
The petition for life in the Bread”;
And no wonder. Only God could teach us how he wanted us
to pray to him.
The religious rite of prayer, then, ordained by God himself, and
enlivened by his own spirit as it came forth from the divine
mouth, ascends into by its own right, commending to the Father
what the Son has taught.
But since the Lord, who foresees everything we need, also told
us, after giving us his rule of prayer, “Ask and it will be given
you” (Matthew 7:7), and we each have our own requests to
make according to our own circumstances, our other needs have
the right - after beginning the legitimate traditional prayers as a
foundation, so to speak - to build an outer superstructure of
requests, though remembering what the Master taught us.
-Tertillian “On Prayer,” Chapters 9-10
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
When I pray the Our Father, do I think about the meaning of
each phrase?
Do I build my own prayers on the foundation of Jesus’ own
prayer?
CLOSING PRAYER
Slowly pray the Lord’s Prayer and reflect on the meaning of
every phrase.

CATECHISM CORNER: HOW TO EAT AN ELEPHANT
ONE BITE AT A TIME
Article 125 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
The Gospels are the heart of all the Scriptures
“because they are our principal source for the
life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our
savior.”
REFLECTION:
St. Jerome say, “Ignorance of Scripture Is ignorance of Christ.”
This is especially true where the four Gospel are concerned.
Every effort to know Christ better must include a deep familiarity
with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
PRAYER:
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ unfold for your people the
mystery of your Word made flesh through the sacred writings of
the Evangelists.
(Source: “Day By Day With The Catechism,” Peter A. Giersch, Catholic Book
Publishing, 2006)
ST. AUGUSTINE ON “THE NEED FOR DAILY BREAD”:
When we say; “Give us this day our daily bread,” you admit that
you are God’s beggar. But do not be ashamed; however rich
anyone may be on earth, that person is God’s beggar. The
beggar stands before the house of the rich Being.
Rich people need their “daily bread.” Why do they have an
abundance of everything? For no other reason than that God
has given it to them. What, then, will they have if God should
withdraw his aid?
-Sermon 56, 9
PRAYER.
Lord, all things are Yours, for you made them. We thank you.
-Sermon 16A, 6

SAINT THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX
SAINT OF THE DAY FOR OCTOBER 1
(JANUARY 2, 1873 – SEPTEMBER 30, 1897)
SAINT THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX’S STORY
“I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To
pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.”
These are the words of Thérèse of Lisieux, a Carmelite nun
called the “Little Flower,” who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in
the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden
sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more
popular than this young nun. Her autobiography, The Story of a
Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Thérèse Martin
entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age
of 24.
Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and consists
mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. But Thérèse
possessed that holy insight that redeems the time, however dull
that time may be. She saw in quiet suffering a redemptive
suffering, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said
she came to the Carmel convent “to save souls and pray for
priests.” And shortly before she died, she wrote: “I want to spend
my heaven doing good on earth.”
Thérèse was canonized in 1925. On October 19, 1997, Pope
John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third
woman to be so recognized in light of her holiness and the
influence of her teaching on spirituality in the Church.
Her parents, Louis and Zélie, were beatified in 2008, and
canonized in 2015.
REFLECTION
Thérèse has much to teach our age of the image, the
appearance, the “self.” We have become a dangerously self-
conscious people, painfully aware of the need to be fulfilled, yet
knowing we are not. Thérèse, like so many saints, sought to
serve others, to do something outside herself, to forget herself in
quiet acts of love. She is one of the great examples of the gospel
paradox that we gain our life by losing it, and that the seed that
falls to the ground must die in order to live.
Preoccupation with self separates modern men and women from
God, from their fellow human beings, and ultimately from
themselves. We must re-learn to forget ourselves, to
contemplate a God who draws us out of ourselves, and to serve
others as the ultimate expression of selfhood. These are the
insights of Saint Thérèse, and they are more valid today than
ever.
