The Word of the Lord

PRELUDE May God bless you during this time of quiet reflection and personal prayer.

ENTRANCE Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Hymnal 410

GENERAL ACCLAMATION 355

Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

COLLECT FOR PURITY 355 Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are

hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love

you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS S280 Robert Powell

1. Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.

2. Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

3. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

4. you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that

we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who

lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: Job 42:1-6, 10-17 Reader: Job answered the Lord:

“I know that you can do all things,

and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’

Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,

things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

‘Hear, and I will speak;

I will question you, and you declare to me.’

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,

but now my eye sees you;

5. you are seated at the right hand

of the Father: receive our prayer.

6. For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

7. you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father, Amen

3

therefore I despise myself,

and repent in dust and ashes.”

And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice

as much as he had before. Then there came to him all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him

before, and they ate bread with him in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the

evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a gold ring.

The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six

thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys. He also had seven sons and three

daughters. He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. In all the land

there were no women so beautiful as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance along with

their brothers. After this Job lived for one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children’s

children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

THE SECOND READING: Hebrews 7:23-28 Reader: The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from

continuing in office; but Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.

Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he

always lives to make intercession for them.

For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated

from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to

offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did

once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to

weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been

made perfect forever.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

Please stand.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 10: 46-52 Gospeller: Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd

were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David,

have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly,

“Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called

the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” So throwing off his cloak, he

sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The

blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has

made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~

THE NICENE CREED 358 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:

he suffered death and was buried.

Page 6: Twenty Third Sunday after Pentecost October 28, 2018 8:30 a.m. …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2863/095322_102818_BLTN_830... · Holy Eucharist Twenty Third Sunday after Pentecost

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE FORM VI 387 The Leader and People pray responsively

For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble;

For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

For the peace and unity of the Church of God;

For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.

For [N. our Presiding Bishop, and N. (N.) our Bishop(s); and for] all bishops and other ministers;

For all who serve God in his Church.

Silence The People may add their own thanksgivings

We will exalt you, O God our King;

And praise your Name for ever and ever.

We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. Silence The People may add their own petitions

Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them;

Who put their trust in you.

CONFESSION OF SIN 393 Celebrant: We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. Silence may be kept.

Leader and People:

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins,

known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit

that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ABSOLUTION 360 Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus

Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal

life. Amen.

THE PEACE All stand

Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

HYMN Doxology Old 100th

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise Him all creatures here below,

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer C) 369 Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

Celebrant: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of

glory and praise.

People: Glory to you for ever and ever.

Celebrant: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of

interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses,

and this fragile earth, our island home.

People: By your will they were created and have their being.

Celebrant: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race,

and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us

the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed

your trust; and we turned against one another.

People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Celebrant: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets

and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the

fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to

fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

People: By his blood, he reconciled us.

By his wounds, we are healed.

Celebrant: And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly

chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all

those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to

proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

SANCTUS S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Page 9: Twenty Third Sunday after Pentecost October 28, 2018 8:30 a.m. …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2863/095322_102818_BLTN_830... · Holy Eucharist Twenty Third Sunday after Pentecost

Celebrant: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water

and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood

of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends,

and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the

new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do

this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

Celebrant and People: We celebrate his death and resurrection,

as we await the day of his coming.

Celebrant: Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Sarah,

Rachel, and Rebekah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at

work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace

only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy

Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his

name.

People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Celebrant: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High

Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,

from generation to generation.

People: AMEN. Danish 3-fold

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior As our Savior Christ

Christ has taught us, has taught us,

we are bold to say, we now pray,

THE LORD’S PRAYER 364

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

A Word From The Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

Sight from Blindness Bartimaeus is poor, and he is blind. He has to sit along the streets of Jericho and beg from strangers for enough money to buy food. One day, Jesus and his followers pass by on the way to Jerusalem. Bartimaeus calls out for the Lord. At first the crowd derides him and demands that he be silenced. But Jesus, knowing there is a need, calls for Bartimaeus to approach. The crowd then turns from derision to supportive, encouraging him to come to Jesus. Bartimaeus tells the Lord, “My teacher, let me see again.” He does not ask for power, wealth, fame, or glory, but only for common eyesight. Jesus responds, “Go; your faith has made you well.” To be well is to be saved both physically and spiritually. Bartimaeus can now see and he can now follow Jesus. He has received his sight and his ‘insight’. “Immediately, he regained his sight and followed him on the way.” Imagine that you are able to stop Jesus in his tracks. What is it that you said that caught the attention of Christ? What would you do when he looks at you? What is it you would ask for? If you were blind, could you be as courageous as Bartimaeus? How would you grope your way to Jesus? What kind of sight would you desire: physical, spiritual? Above all, never forget or disbelieve the Good News: that Jesus Christ stopped dead in his tracks for you on top of a hill called Calvary. Because of the death and resurrection of Christ, your cries by the side of the road have been heard and answered. “Your faith has made you well.” (Dennis Bolton) Faithfully, Father Ron

Handbells Wed at 6PM VESTRY OPENINGS Interested in learning more about the business and operational aspects that are necessary to support our church? There’s an opportunity just waiting for you to become a part of it! There are several openings for the upcoming year to serve on the Vestry. Candidates must be a confirmed communicant, and at least 16 years of age. If you are interested, please reach out to one of our clergy or a current member of the Vestry.

REQUESTS REQUESTS FOR PRAYER -- To make a prayer request for a loved one or a community or a national concern to be offered up on Sunday mornings, record the name on the prayer list beside the Guest Register in the Narthex. If the concern is ongoing and you would like the name also listed in the NET and prayed for on Sunday mornings on a rotating basis over a long period, circle the name on the list. Confidential prayer can be requested using the blue DOK prayer cards in the pews. Prayer requests received on the DOK cards are kept confidential and are not spoken on Sunday mornings, but are prayed for by all DOK members daily for one month or longer, if requested on the card.

CHURCH NEWS & EVENTS SATURDAY BREAKFAST AT STACYS If you would like to receive emails regarding activities of the men in the Church, send your email address to [email protected] (and we will add you to this year's list.) SPECIAL VISITOR We have word that our friend from the North Pole will be stopping by during Coffee Hour on November 25th to make his annual pictures with you and your family! We hope that you can join us that Sunday for a quick smile, and we will get pictures emailed to you as soon as possible for you to share over the holidays.

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT It's that time of year where we start pulling out all of our props for our annual Christmas Eve Pageant. This year we will be doing "Twas the Night Before Christmas". There are many speaking and nonspeaking parts, so everyone can take part. I know that everyone is very busy, so I have tried to limit us to only two practices - (December 11th and December 18th, 5:30-6:15). Please use the sign up sheet in Fotinos Hall to pick out who you would like to be this year.

CANTEMUS CHOIR Lastly, for the past several years we have traditionally had the wonderful voices of our Cantemus Choir sing with the Adult Choir during the service of Lessons & Carols. If your child would like to sing with the Cantemus Choir, please see the sign up sheet in Fotinos Hall. We will practice on Wednesday evenings beginning the last week in November. The Annual Altar Guild Dinner/Meeting will be held Monday, November 12 at 6:00 in Furr Hall. Please contact your team captain for RSVP and your choice of dish to share.

Backpacks for Kids Ministry – Helping Feed Local Kids One Backpack at a Time

The Mission-Outreach Team currently helps feed local, hungry school children on weekends and

school breaks. The children served in this program qualify for free or reduced lunch and the

food-filled backpacks are discreetly distributed through the school guidance counselor.

We currently have 5 children at St. James Elementary School whose families may be food

insecure, meaning that their finances may force them to choose between food and other expenses.

The program typically provides the following each weekend:

2 breakfasts 2 lunches 3 dinners 5 snacks

Backpack Team: Marianne Boles, Priscilla Foley, Carmen Hatley, Jean Hatley, Mary LaBranche, Carole

Rowell PLUS 11 families (Jarvis, Lunney, Paasch/Jacobs, Anzalone, Duggan, Stewart, Driggers, Reid,

Jordan, Johnson, Littlejohn) who provide the monthly food AND Ronnie Rudd, whose company donates

multiple food items.

For more information, please contact Carmen Hatley [email protected] or

704-995-3796) or Carole Rowell ([email protected] or 704-516-2312) _______________________________________________________________________________________________
