WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

UPCOMING EVENTS

An objective of all organizations is to quickly train associates to do a job correctly, safely, and conscientiously. Job Instruction (JI) is designed to develop basic stability of your processes (standard work). This program teaches the method to instruct a person how to perform a job – any job. As is frequently the case, most processes are performed by various people using different methods. Job Instruction requires you to identify the “one best way”, teach the process to this one way, and thereby creates a standard method. The basis of stability is generated by doing the same thing the same way across associates and shifts. So by utilizing Job Instruction you gain the benefits of consistent training and stable processes This lays a solid foundation forInstruction you gain the benefits of consistent training and stable processes. This lays a solid foundation for any continuous improvement program. Benefits experienced when practicing Job Instruction are significantly reduced ‘learning curves’ (by as much as 75%), less scrap and rework, fewer accidents, and increased job satisfaction.

Attendees will be asked to bring with them a process from their own organizations that can be used for in-class application of the JI method. The process must be of short cycle time (~2-3 minutes) to accommodate the program format.

Five Benefits of Hosting a Regional Event

1 - As a host you can select the subject. Identify a “gap” in existing knowledge or Experience within your organization. AME will bring in a facilitator to teach the host participants as well as the other attendees. 2 - Hosting an application based event (e.g. a kaizen event) will provide the host company with Tangible improvements in the selected area. Attendees from other companies will be valuable resources during the event to implement real change. AME will bring in a facilitator if required.3 - Build your network of fellow Continuous Improvement and Operational Excellence professionals that will provide continued benefits long after the event4 - Receive suggestions for improvement from attendees after a tour of the host facility5 - Use the event as a “rallying point” for the organization to progress to the next level in Y t f O ti l E ll t i i t t ll d ff tYour quest for Operational Excellence, or to reinvigorate a stalled effort.

Value Stream Mapping, Lean Office, Pull Systems, TPM, TWI, Daily VisualManagement – whatever the subject area - AME can help you close an existing knowledge gap. Contact Mid-Atlantic Regional President Drew Locher (Mobile: 609-876-7936, email: [email protected]) to discuss the possibility of holding an event at your facility.

How does your Organization Build Respect for People?

A recent Gallup poll shows less than 1/3 of Americans are engaged in their jobs. It is estimated that this low level of employee engagement is costing the US between 450-550 billion dollars a year in lost productivity. Managers are primarily responsible for an employee’s engagement. Over the past few decades, organizations have driven their lean journey using the tools to improve safety, quality, delivery and cost. Th h b littl h i “ t f l ” "Th F d t l f P l C t iThere has been little or no emphasis on “respect for people”. "The Fundamentals of People Centric Leadership: Communication Skills Training" class was held May 13-15, 2014 at Dentsply/Caulk in Milford DE. AME is offering the course in response to the deficit in tools to help organizations build an inspiring and engaging culture.

Although the concepts presented in the course are fundamental, the course is carefully designed to build upon the content and deliver a unique and life-changing experience. It is designed to help people improve their relationships and their ability to be successful with others inside and outside of the workplace.their relationships and their ability to be successful with others inside and outside of the workplace.Participants are given the opportunity to deeply understand their core behavioral tendencies and the impact that it has on their ability to communicate and connect with others. They learn about how the diverse contribution of others can be leveraged to enhance their life at work and at home. The communication cycle is broken down into its elements and participants learn about the power and impact of nonverbal communication in every aspect of their lives. Building upon the skills taught throughout the course, participants learn an effective method to positively and respectively confront others and ask for change.

At th f th ti i t l th t th bilit t ll li t i th k t h l i th lAt the core of the course, participants learn that the ability to really listen is the key to helping others solve problems and grow. It is a key component in creating an inspiring, engaging and innovative workplace. It is potentially the most critical skill of a great leader. Most people are under the misconception that listening is simply being quiet while the other person is talking, or processing and analyzing what the other person is saying. Listening in fact is neither. Most people are under the assumption that listening is a natural gift for which no training is required. Unfortunately listening is a skill that most people have never been taught. This class teaches participants how to reflectively listen. Although conceptually easy, listening is a very difficult skill to master.skill to master.

As one CST participant noted: “It is terrifying to think I didn’t do this before, and also terrifying that I may not be able to implement the training and skills learned (right away).” When asked to summarize the class experience and learning in two words, Peter Wong, Quality Manager for Silicon Forest Electronics, Inc. said:“Human. - everyone's lives we touch are human. Our team mates, our spouses, our children. Everyone is someone's child. Being. - CST has inspired me to a new way of being.”

RECOGNIZING PARTNERS IN THE REGION

The Mid-Atlantic region has been reaching out to various organizations in the region to leverage opportunities to better fulfill its mission of “Share-Learn-Grow”. We would like to express our appreciation to the following organizations who have agreed to publish AME regional events on their websites and/or in their various e-mailings to their network members. The success of any regional event relies not just with the host company, but with a strong showing of attendees who are willing to share their experiences and tohost company, but with a strong showing of attendees who are willing to share their experiences and to continue the networking beyond an event.

Gain Leverage, Profitable Value Streams through Lean R&D

If your organization has largely focused lean improvement initiatives on manufacturing and the supply chain, it’s time to broaden your lean perspective to include research and development (R&D) processes. That’s the opinion of Norbert Majerus, a senior six sigma master black belt and a lean product development master black belt at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. p y p yMajerus has championed Goodyear’s lean product development process and he teaches a corporate lean product development certification program.

Some companies implement lean product development with the goal to cut cost in R&D. Although lean is a good tool for achieving that goal, experience has shown that solely focusing on cost cutting can be detrimental to creativity and innovation. The net gain of a cost reduction initiative in R&D has a very small effect on the bottom line of the business, because R&D is typically a small fraction of business costs. Majerus stated that, by contrast, Goodyear executives understand that the new product decisions made in R&D can have a large effect on the Goodyea e ecut es u de sta d t at t e e p oduct dec s o s ade & ca a e a a ge e ect o t eprofitability of the products. Lean can and should be leveraged in R&D to further enhance the profitability of new products.

“The secret, at Goodyear, was to educate people doing the actual work in lean principles and to engage them in helping us change their processes, in line with Toyota concepts,” Majerus continued. “For example, if you are working on a major project, and the market demands moving up the launch by six months to a year, lean principles can help you speed up the development process and assure the on-time delivery of the new product. Lean principles helped Goodyear achieve faster time to market agility to react very quickly to changes in theLean principles helped Goodyear achieve faster time to market, agility to react very quickly to changes in the marketplace and the ability to incorporate new technology.”

When you are extending lean practices into the R&D arena, counseled Majerus, make sure that safety and quality come first. Then focus on service to the customer, such as on-time delivery and speed. That approach will also enhance creativity, as it frees up design engineers’ time to innovate.

Majerus said that, at Goodyear, lean product development helped it achieve almost 100 percent on-time delivery and reduce new product development cycle time by more than 70 percentand reduce new product development cycle time by more than 70 percent.

“In a big product development project, things can change quickly – the market, the technology that becomes available and so on. In the past, we did not have the capability to put the product on the market when the market was ready for it. Now, with lean product development, faster time-to-market can mean millions in additional revenue,” said Majerus. He noted that in addition to gaining faster and more predictable new product development, Goodyear has received more innovation awards than ever before.
