Pomegranates are antioxidant packed skin food-rich fruits and if not peeled and eaten properly they can make a big messHere are a few steps to correctly peel and eat this glourious fruit

1 Cut the crown of the fruit and thow it out 2 Score the rind of the pomegranate in several places but be sure not to cut all the way through 3 Prepare a bowl of water and soak the fruit upside down for ten minutes or so 4 Break apart the pomegranate and remove the seeds letting them sink to the bottom of the bowl 5 Using a sieve remove everything but the seeds and juice from the bowl 6 Drain the seeds with a collander and pat dry with paper towel You can store the seeds in tupperware for up to two days in the fridge 7 Put the juice also in tupperware and it can aslo be stored in the fridge for a few daysEnjoy

When I was a reporter in Bermuda despite being the friendliest guy around I managed to upset the PR department of every large insurer on the Island usually without tryingOne of the very largest companies was once one of the very smallest I helped by writing press releases annual reports doctorsrsquo prescriptions (just kidding) and so forth Then they became huge and did a dumb thing which they had to own up to The boss told me so that I could tell everyone elseThe companyrsquos PR department became enraged that I had done so ldquoWhy canrsquot you be like (another reporter)rdquo they asked ldquoHe does exactly what we tell himrdquo I explained that I was a proper reporter ldquoRightrdquo the woman said ldquoYou have to meet with our general counselrdquo the top legal manA friend advised me not to go ldquoThe man is a monsterrdquo my friend said ldquoHersquoll eat you aliverdquo Excellent I replied and what a great story Man eats reporterTragically the general counsel was a coward and cancelled the interview before it could happen Some monsterMuch the same thing happened with a Government Minister

He said something very dumb something very very dumb indeed Something yoursquod ground your seven-year-old for saying for a year So I reported it which was my jobI was hauled in to meet the Minister The Permanent Secretary explained that the Minister had indeed said the words in public but hadnrsquot wanted it reported ldquoThen he should have been an editor not a Ministerrdquo I explainedldquoEither way yoursquore going to receive a beatingrdquo the PS said Excellent I replied and what a great story Minister beats reporterldquoWait hererdquo the PS said and that meeting was cancelled tooI once made a mistake Shocking I know but there it is I said a guy was from somewhere that he wasnrsquot from He was a big shot at a reinsurance company I was banned for years from entering the company or even dreaming about itEventually the company needed something that only I could provide In I went and bumped into the dude I apologised profusely ldquoNo needrdquo he said ldquoI wish I were what you said I wasrdquo Eight years in the wilderness for nothingI could fill this magazine thrice over with such stories but for some reason they like having lots of articles in it not just one So Irsquoll close with a short taleOne PR guy said hersquod land me an interview with the top man if I would write his reporter wifersquos stories for her for a week so that they could go on vacation Like a fool I agreed but the stories required specialist knowledge of the kind it takes a lifetime to accumulate I simply couldnrsquot write them When they returned from hols I was banned from the company for lifeAh the life of a reporter No matter how badly yoursquore treated therersquos always a story Reporter finishes article

The Charman Prize is a community art prize competition at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art which exhibits artwork inspired by Bermuda and honors and supports Bermuda artists in the creation of their artwork By celebrating a wide array of artwork from Bermudarsquos artistic community the Charman Prize encourages visual artists of all abilities working in all techniques and mediums to exhibit and share their works as members of the community The Charman Prize aspires to support and inspire the artists towards excellence in their medium and to further artistic accomplishments

In the 1770s the West Indies island of St Eustatius became the place where the American rebels of the lsquoRevolutionary Warrsquo could obtain goods especially war materiel that were denied them in other places The Dutch at lsquoStatiarsquo with their many Bermudian business compatriots were only too happy to oblige and many a fortune over some five years of trading Unfortunately for the merchants of war Admiral Rodney destroyed the mercantile centre at Statia in 1781 as he advanced through the West Indies putting paid to the French and other allies of the American rebels Subsequently the great naval man returned to England due to illness it is said that had he remained on the West Indies and America station that he might have prevented the losses at the Chesapeake and Yorktown perhaps delaying or negating the Independence of the United States Two generations after the destruction a famous Bermudian seaman nicknamed lsquoBamboo Billyrsquo aka Captain William Hubbard Peniston (1828ndash1917) paid a visit to Statia in 1853 and left an interesting account later published in the Bermuda Historical Quarterly One hundred and twenty years later the venerable Bermudian antiquarian and artist Hereward Watlington also alighted on the island but that time from a small eight-seat aeroplane rather than a twelve-gun Bermuda sloop

For a period St Eustatius was one of the richest places in the West Indies with many warehouses lining the shore Admiral Rodney destroyed the entrepot that when he took the island in 1781

Captain Peniston was one of the most respected sea masters of his day and often plied the ocean from Bermuda into the West Indies bringing back sweet potatoes among other southern goodies At Statia in 1857 he observed that he lsquofound many descendants of old Bermuda families who vied with each other in extending hospitality to mersquo When Hereward Watlington visited over a century later there were but a few such descendants left noting that his lsquoancestress Christina Loversquo was born on Statia in 1739 In place of the living Watlington brought home a list of the dead from the graveyard including familiar names like Jennings Hill Godet Packwood and Peniston When I visited St Eustatius in 1994 there was but one family of a Bermudian name the Godets possibly descendants of slaves of an owner of that surnameBamboo Bill was greeted at Government House and remarked on its fine marble floors and the inability of its inhabitant unlike the rest of Statia to speak the Queenrsquos English Upon the refusal to surrender the island in 1781 it was through the front door of the House that Rodney sent his first shot which had the desired effect of capitulation The Admiral and his marines ransacked the island including digging up recently graves in which bullion had been buried to keep it out of British hands However some Bermudian

ladies sewed such precious items into the cushions of Bermuda cedar chairs which items of furniture they were allowed to take with them when ejected from Statia by the Admiral Statia never recovered from the sacking by Rodney and Bermudian warehouses yet lie in ruin on the sea shore

When Hereward Watlington saw Government House in 1979 it had become a ruin in yellow brick It was owned in the early nineteenth century by one Colonel De Veere He refused to deviate when lsquohis daughter suggested to him that he should consider marriage again he would reply [of his late wife] ldquoI cannot replace herrdquohellipHowever his bed was not unoccupiedrsquo

Do You Knowhellip about Bermudarsquos Caves admiral Sir david Milne and a 600000-year-old Stalagmite BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

Bermuda probably has more caves per square mile than anywhere else in the world These caves are located in the older rocks close to the current sea level and were formed during periods of low water levels during glaciation cycles of the current ice age These cycles occur on 40000 to 100000-year time scales and we are now in an interglacial period following the end of the last ice age some 10000 years agoAs Bermuda emerged upward from the ocean during these interglacial periods the

downward drag of water in dunes and depressions found weak pockets of limestone between the lower rocks and these were eventually flushed out The lowering water level then allowed air into these newly formed caves causing the formation of drip-rock and in time the formation of stalagmites and stalactitesMade of calcium carbonate Spelothems grow as long as there is dripping water in an air-filled cave and become Stalagmites if growing from the floor and Stalactites if growing down from the ceiling When they join they become columns or pillars Many caves that are now completely filled with water also contain Spelothems indicating that they were once above sea levelA major group of caves is located to the east of Harrington Sound the largest being Crystal Cave Admiralrsquos Cave another large cave is located between Blue Hole Hill and Grotto Bay and almost entirely above sea level It is called Admiralrsquos Cave after Admiral Sir David Milne who in 1819 removed a massive stalagmite from the cave and presented it to his friend Professor Robert Jameson of the University of Edinburgh for the College MuseumThe 1888 Bermuda Pocket Almanack contains the following report ldquoA splendid stalagmite cut from the Walsingham Caves is now in the Museum Edinburgh and has attached to it the following description lsquoStalagmite of Carbonate of Lime Sawn from the Floor of a Cave in the Island of Bermudarsquo The stalagmite was 11 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 3-12 tonsIn1863 ndash 44 years after his father had removed the stalagmite ndash the Admiralrsquos son Admiral Sir Alexander Milne visited the cave where he had witnessed the removal as a boy and found that 5 drips had formed small knobs of new matter on the stump of the stalagmite He calculated that the new matter amounted to about 5 cubic inches and as the stalagmite consisted of approximately 44 cubic feet ndash or

76000 cubic inches ndash concluded that it would have taken 600000 years to form the stalagmite that his father had removed from the cave This calculation assumed that the deposits occurred at exactly the same rate as in the previous 44 years something that is highly unlikelyWhen HMS Challenger surveyed Bermuda in 1873 Sir CW Thomson had the stump of the stalagmite removed and also sent to the University of Edinburgh According to David Summers President of Crystal Caves tragedy befell the Bermuda stalagmite in 1973 when the museum was being altered Rather than remove the stalagmite from an upper floor it was allowed to fall through several floors and was smashed to pieces

The lower part of Admiralrsquos Cave is now under water The fact that there are Stalagmites in the water proves that the cave was once totally dry when sea levels were much lower during an ice age
