1.Assemble the bed upside down. Start with the top frame. Drill for 2-1/2” pocket screws and attach with wood glue and screws.

2.Next, assemble the base frame. Drill for 2-1/2” pocket screws as shown, making sure to drill pocket screws along the top

edges of all four boards prior to assembly. Attach with wood glue and screws making sure the edge pocket screw holes are pointing the same direction.

3.Lay the top frame on the fl oor with the pocket holes facing up and stack the base frame on top. Make sure the head

of the top frame (2x2 board) is fl ush with the head of the base frame and the base frame sides are 2” in from the sides of the top frame. Attach with wood glue and screws.

4.Cut both the cleats and the center board to fi t opening. Both boards will be attached 3/4” from the top face of the top frame.

The 2x2 cleats are screwed into the sides of the bed frame with 2-1/2” torx screws. Drill for 2-1/2” pocket screws in both ends of the center support 2x4. Center the board in the opening and attach

with wood glue and screws.

5.Cut your furring strip slats to fi t the opening. Begin by setting the fi rst and last in place, inset 1” from the ends. Secure with

wood glue and 1-1/4” brad nails. Evenly space the remaining 14 slats in between. The spacing should be about 2-1/3”.

Next begin construction of the headboard.

1.After cutting your plywood to size mark out notches and cut with a jigsaw.

The notches will be cut out of the 43” side of the plywood. (when purchasing your plywood check and see if they will trim to size for you)

2.Cut four 1” x 4” boards to 28” long. These will act as your beginning planks

for each of the four quadrants of the headboard.Mark 45º lines from the corners of one end as shown. Then cut with a miter saw.

You should end up with planks that are a hair over 26-1/8” from tip to edge. Repeat with the remaining 3 beginning planks.

Twin Bed & Chevron Headboard - Page | 7SHanty-2-Chic.com

3.The chevron pattern is built in quadrants. First draw a line vertically dissecting the plywood in half.

Next draw a line horizontally across the plywood 1-1/2” up from the notches you cut in step 1. Then draw a line horizontally in the middle of the bottom line and the top edge of the plywood.

Line up the fi rst plank with the intersection of the drawn lines as shown.

(Just for reference, there should be approximately 2-3/4” from where the board crosses the top of the plywood and the closest corner.)

Attach the plank with glue and 1-1/4” brad nails. All the planks will extend past the edges of the plywood. This will enable you to use the jigsaw in later steps to get a smooth cut edge.

4.Lay the next 1” x 4” board up against the fi rst as shown. Mark reference lines as shown

and make your miter cut. The miter cut should be 45º. Attach with glue and 1-1/4” brad nails. Repeat with boards going up from the beginning plank and

then from the left of the beginning plank to complete the fi rst quadrant.

5.Using the top edge of the plywood as reference, draw lines as shown with a framing square.

Cut along these lines with a jigsaw. All the planks in the fi rst quadrant should now be fl ush with the outside edge of the plywood.

6.Repeat for the next 3 quadrants, always starting with your beginning plank.

For the bottom cuts of the bottom 2 quadrants use the reference line you drew earlier and cut each one prior to attaching them to the plywood

7.Align a 1” x 2” trim board vertically on the left side, fl ush with the face and top edge of the planks.

Mark where the board meets with the bottom corner of planks and cut to length.Attach with glue and 1-1/4” brad nails. Repeat this step with the other vertical side.

Then, mark, cut and attach the horizontal top piece.

Twin Bed & Chevron Headboard - Page | 9SHanty-2-Chic.com

8.To attach the face trim begin by cutting a 45º miter on one end of a 1” x 3” board.

Lay the board vertically on top of the planks on the left side, making sure it is fl ush with the outside edge of the headboard and the corner of the miter is

fl ush with the bottom left corner of the planks. Mark the length and cut a 45º miter.Attach with glue and 1-1/4” brad nails. Repeat the steps going clockwise around the head board.

The fi nal bottom piece will be fl ush with the bottom of the planks.

9.Finally, attach the headboard to the bed frame with 2” wood screws. You can be liberal with

the number of screws. We used 4 sets of 2 screws evenly spaced across the back. The bottom edge of the face trim and planks should just rest on top of the bed frame.
