PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Penny McDowell
Hi Quilters
Well my gardens are put to bed for the winter and I'm
getting into quilting mode. When the rush of quilting is
done for the holiday I hope to repaint my studio after I
finish some touch ups in the rest of the house we
repainted last winter.
I hope to see some of your hand applique and hand
quilting projects, no matter how small in the next few
meetings during show & share. We really need everyone
to put something in our quilt show this coming May.
Please finish, set aside, borrow back the bed quilt, lap
quilt, wall hanging, placemats, purse, jacket or what ever
else you made. This is your quilt show.
I'm looking forward to our Xmas Party. First I have to
map quest it because I have no idea where it is. As long
as I don't have to cook, it's a good dinner. I have to put
my ideas to work to get my challenge done.
Hats off to Marty as our new treasurer and Reneé as our
new VP/programs.
I know most of you filled out our membership and
committee form. Since we are all adults, I'm not going to
waste my time going through all the sheets and filling the
committees. I will bring a sheet for each of the
committees we have and let you sign up in the next few
months. If we get 20 for one committee, say Linus &
Pink Pillows and no one for any of the others, then we
will cut that activity. There will have to be a chair for
each committee also. This is your guild and it is what you
make it to be.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving (we’re getting this issue to
you early), Merry Christmas, Hanukkah.

Please remember when you are looking for quilt fabric, notions and classes, to patronize our advertisers who
help defray our newsletter costs. If we don’t support our independent shops they won’t exist.
ALSO, please remember to choose Twin City Quilters Guild when ordering from Amazon. The guild receives
money every few months if there are enough sales. Remember to also tell your family and friends to select us as
a charity on Amazon.

Minutes of the November 2, 2016
Guild Meeting
Show ’n’ Share items have been placed on tables prior to the meeting enabling Guild members to view items
close up.
The November 2, 2016 meeting was called to order by Guild President, Penny McDowell at 6:35PM. The Guild
held a moment of silence in memory of two members, Ruth Ann Monaco and Joanne Mullins who recently
passed. One visitor Margie Hoefner was acknowledged.
The Minutes from the October 5, 2016 meeting were posted on the website.
Marty Held posted the Treasurer’s Report. A detail of the report will be filed with the minutes; reported balance
for the Guild is $21,112.97.
Patty Kuriscak reported a distribution in 2016 of 709 comfort pillows and 409 chemo hats. She and a member of
her committee presented programs regarding the Pink Ribbon project to two area quilt guilds.
Karen McMurdo announced that a Rada order will be placed in order to have items available by Christmas.
Joan Rockenbrock reminded everyone the Election Day is next week, including a ‘Vote for your Favorite
Donut’ at Paula’s Donuts. She also advised the Guild members that there was still time to purchase a kit for the
annual challenge quilt and that prizes were going to be awarded - due, completed, at the holiday party, Dec. 7.
Project Linus - 15 quilts were turned in tonight, total 5,221. Linda Szmanda reminded members to save scraps
for the pool at the quilt show. Cindy Hubacher advocated that members continue to make quilts since this is the
Guild’s main charity project. Penny stated she will offer machine quilting instructions at a future Project Linus
workshop. Mary Militello spoke of the constant need for quilts and the variety of venues where she distributed
quilts. Suggested sizes are 30”x36”, 38”x50”, and 48”x60”.
Raffle Quilt - Charles Rhodes spoke about the Guild’s raffle quilt and the pricing structure for tickets. He asked
that each Guild member be responsible to sell at least $25 worth of tickets, which will be available at the
December and January meetings. He also offered to chair the next raffle quilt, stating that he would like a few
more members on the committee.
Christmas Stockings - Cheryl Shoemaker thanked members for the Christmas stockings that were constructed
and donated, totaling over 1,000. No further stockings can be turned in for this year unless they can be
delivered directly to her house before next week. Special thanks were extended to Jennie Wigle and her sewing
crew for 332 they donated and the 503 stockings by Penny and her crew.
Mystery Quilt - part two of the second quilt was not distributed and will be.
Quilt Show - Patty Kuriscak offered to chair the demos that will be presented. The Town has given the OK to
have food trucks available during the show - suggestions were presented. Volunteer sign-up sheets for the
various arenas at the Show will be available at the January meeting. The Guild may need to rent tables to
accommodate the venues for the show. Some vendors have been booked, inquires will be mailed to others. It is
expected that every member enter something into the show, returning forms for entries sooner rather than later.
If a member will offer the item for sale, please note that as well. Props are also needed; start working on items
for the Boutique. Jan Brauer summarized the process of hanging items in the show, Sandy Wardour is still
looking for fat 8th from members, and Jeannine Ellis reminded everyone that there will be a display featuring
2015 and 2016 challenge quilts.
Holiday Party - Angela Myers reminded membership that the annual Holiday Party will be held at the Fairways
at Deerwood, 1818 Sweeney Street, North Tonawanda on Wednesday, December 7, 6PM, dinner at 6:30PM.
Funds to cover the dinner ($25) will be accepted in the form of check only payable to the Guild. They should be
given to committee member Sandy Wardour, meal selection needs to be made at that time. Joan Rockenbrock
stated that ballots, for voting on the Challenge Quilts that were brought in, will not be handed out until all
entries have been received.
Penny announced several upcoming holiday craft shows including one by members Donna Mileham and Wendy
Mangrum, Kenan Arts Council Holiday gift show and Going Out of my Mind Holiday Art Festival in East

QUILT SHOW by Cheryl Shoemaker
Our quilt show is May 20 and 21, 2017 at the Wheatfield Center. Our theme this year is "Express Yourself"
Who gets puts a quilt/project in our quilt show: Everyone!! We would like an entry from every member. Big.
Small. First one. Pot Holder. One does not enter a show to see what it will win. The object is to foster creativity,
encourage new quilters, inspire someone due to the pattern or color concept, have your picture taken with your
project and post it on facebook - my first “ ” at my first show. How exciting for you and your family/friends.
Commitment Quilt Forms Please submit your forms early. The more we can get before the deadline (like now,
not Febr), the easier it is on everyone else (Jan for staging, those typing quilt labels for show, etc.). I will take
them at the Christmas party.
Do not forget to put down colors (it helps for the staging) and if there is any theme (like Valentine’s Day,
Festivus, Fourth of July, etc. etc. or that pot holder or hot mat you made in the likeness of someone). If there is
no theme - no problem. We are just looking at the entries - if we have enough common themes, we can group
them together. A beautiful blue wall hanging that reminds you of sunshine and puppies does not want to go next
to the pot holder. Please consider making a mounting sleeve to hang your item. This will greatly assist us. If you
don’t know how to make one, go to You Tube, search for “AQS Quilt show 4 – adding a sleeve to your quilt”,
for instructions. If you have any questions, please call Jan Brauer (home: 716-731-2610; cell: 716-361-2184) or
e-mail her at [email protected].
Do not forget to put down the pattern name and source (book, website, magazine, self designed). Since we do
not provide a program, this is the only way a viewer can look up that pattern, if they want to make one also.
Volunteer Sheets - Starting at the January meeting, sheets for volunteering for the many jobs we will need filled
will be available. Everyone needs to pitch in and we thank you for your volunteering. Set up day is May 19.
We are looking for items for our basket raffle at our Quilt Show. So gather new stuff – any theme: sewing,
crats, knitting, wine, chocolate, lottery tickets. If you don’t have a basket, call Cheryl (716-731-2861) as she
has a few.
2016 BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH by Esther Stoeckel
Compliments to you if you've completed all the Year 2016 blocks! The "Snowball" for December is a very
simple block, perhaps the easiest of all 12. Fabrics needed are one 5"x20" strip of white or off-white cut into 2-
1/2" squares, plus four 6-1/2" squares (your choice of colors.) Take the small squares to make the corners of the
four blocks, then sew blocks together to complete the 12-1/2" block. We will have a drawing at our
Christmas party to finalize the year from our Quilters Cache choices.

For 2017, Sheryl Lynch will start a new concept for us to challenge ourselves, and it sounds very interesting
indeed. Thanks, Sheryl, for presenting your easily-understood instructions! And thanks also to everyone who
participated in the 2016 Block-of-the-Month drawings. It was nice to see a few Linus quilts made from
those winning blocks as well. (Mine is still in the making, promised for 2017.) Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year to all!!
2017 BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH by Sheryl Lynch
What with the holidays in December this is the first installment for our block of the month series which starts
January 2017. This way you’ll have “time” to have it done for our January 4th
. meeting. Included are pictures
of the finished quilt, as well as the first block and the fabric requirements. Please have your name on the block
so when I collect them each month I can keep them together. Have fun. If you have any questions you may e-
mail me at [email protected].
The quilt is called SERENITY. It is 74” by 74” and was design by Denice Lipscomb, Common Threads
Quilting, Waxahachie, Texas commonthreadsquilting.com

Pink Tone: • Cut 2: 2⅜ inch squares * Cut each square diagonally once to make 4 triangles
• Cut 4: 2 by 3½ inch rectangles
Black Floral: • Cut 1: strip 2 inches by width of fabric * Subcut into: ◊ 8: 2 inch squares and

Green Leaf: • Cut 4: 2½ inch squares
Sewing Instructions
Make 8 half square triangles using 4 background 2½ inch squares and 4 green leaf 2½ inch squares
* Place a background 2½ inch square on a green leaf 2½ inch square, right sides together
* Draw a line diagonally across the square
* Sew ¼ inch on either side of the line
* Cut on the line which was previously drawn
* Press to the green leaf
Square each half square triangle up to 2 inches. Note that the squares used to make half square triangles result in
a half square triangle that is slightly larger than the final unit. This is to allow “squaring up” to the exact
dimension.
Make 4 flying geese using 4 black floral 2 by 3½ inch rectangles and 8 background 2 inch squares.
* Place a background 2 inch square on the left side of a black floral rectangle
* Draw a line from point to point starting on the inside point of the square
* Sew on the line
* Trim to ¼ inch of the seam
* Press to the background
* Repeat the procedure on the right side of the rectangle
• Each unit should measure 2 by 3½ inches
In similar fashion to the last step, make 4 flying geese using 4 pink tone 2 by 3½ inch rectangles and 8 black
floral 2 inch squares. Press to the black floral.
• Each unit should measure 2 by 3½ inches
• Make one unit as shown below
The unit will use: the background 2⅝ inch square and 4 pink tone triangles
• The order of sewing is indicated by the numbers next to the arrows.
All “1’s” are sewn first and then all “2’s” are sewn next, etc
• For those who wish to side press, the direction to press is indicated by the head
of the arrow as viewed from the front (“right”) side of the fabric. This convention
will be used throughout the patterns
• The unit should measure 3½ by 3½ inches
