Riding trends have changed and if you addrecent revisions to motorcycle licencelegislation into the equation, it becomesclearer that small-to-mid-capacity bikes isthe area we need to be concentrating ourefforts on – and the feedback we have beenreceiving from you reflects that.

So we are opening up our pages in orderto be able to do this.

This new look issue of T&G is packed tothe gills with such information. We haveexpanded our coverage of machines toinclude anything and everything that can beridden on licences up to – and including –the new A2 UK licence (and believe us,there’s some pretty unusual machinery outthere). We also plan to keep you up-to-datewith all the latest news, gadgets, clothingand accessories as and when they becomeavailable.

If all this isn’t enough, we will also offeradvice and tips on various subjects such aswhat to look for when buying new or usedmachines and even top tips for surviving inan urban environment – in fact, if it’s asubject that is related to buying, running orriding a bike, then we will cover it in futureissues of T&G.

If you don’t want to miss out on anything, then I’d suggest that it’s time you took out asubscription. We are also doing a specialdeal at the moment and are offering threeissues for £9.99 on direct debit – see page 18for more information – don’t miss out!

WHO’SWHO?

WELCOME

Mau sPencerHas been riding bikes since the tender age of 16(hell that was a long time ago). Mau is a wise, old sage (well, more old than wise) and hasbeen the editor of T&G since 2003. He is alsothe editor of Classic Scooterist and consequentlyhas a foot in both camps.

ian ‘iggy’ graingerSome say ‘The Ig’ started riding scooters at theage of 15 and never stopped, although hismum still hopes one day he’ll grow up and geta ‘proper’ bike – she’s likely to be disappointed. He’s been a regular contributor to T&G andvarious bike and scooter magazines since 2003.

sHaun VargaShaun has worked his way through all shapesand sizes of motorcycles and scooters sincepassing his test at the age of 17. He endures aregular 20 mile daily commute each way intocentral London (but still thinks it beats publictransport by a mile!).

Joe dickIs our staff photographer, so his ugly mug isnormally hidden behind a camera, rather thanin front of it. Joe has been an enthusiast of twowheels for a while, but has only recently takenhis bike test (read about it on page 78) – andnow we can’t keep his feet on the ground.

natHan MillwardIs one of our occasional contributors who hasan unhealthy penchant for extremely long andenduring trans-continental rides that can bedone on a tight budget (cheapskate). Give himany excuse and he’ll be off around the world ata moment’s notice.

Pete HensHawIs the ex-editor ofMotorcycle Sport & Leisure(MSL). Pete doesn’t own a car and is happilydependent on two wheel transport – anythingpowered by petrol, diesel, pedals or slightelectrical assistance. He’s a sucker for anythingeco friendly or out of the norm.

BloodbikesBlood bikes have been running insome parts of the UK since the late1960s, transporting essentialmedical items between hospitalsand healthcare institutions.

Currently there are 13 groupscovering 32 UK counties. Thisreaches more than 65% of thecountry’s population. Withplanned expansion, this willextend coverage to over 46 millionpeople. The main aims are savinglives and the NHS money, at thesame time as promoting a positiveimage of motorcyclists.

LEBBSThe Lincolnshire branch of BloodBikes is LEBBS (LincolnshireEmergency Blood Bikes). A recentaddition to the Blood Bikesorganisation, volunteeers havebeen working hard since January2012, attending events and showsraising the funds to become aregistered charity. With the help oflocal businesses they’ve nowsucceeded in raising enoughmoney to obtain five motorcycles, acar, plus a PR show stand. They arecurrently in discussions with localNHS trusts to ensure that theyunderstand the requirements forLincolnshire and how to save theNHS as much money as they can.

With operational bikes alreadypurchased, rider induction trainingcourses have commenced withcheck rides for riders being doneby qualified IAM/ROSPA observers;other training covered blood boxhandling and hospitalfamiliarisation trips to NHSfacilities. Boston-Grantham will beknown as ‘Route One’, with theoption to collect and deliver bloodproducts or medical equipment toand from Lincoln County Hospital.Once routes have been established,it’s envisaged that more countyhospitals will jump at the chanceof using the free service.

Initially, LEBBS will coverweekends from 7pm on Friday andwill be ‘on call’ until 6am Mondaymorning. They will be using two-three riders (one on nights, one ondays and a backup rider).

dOnATIOnSLarge donations have given LEBBSthe luxury of four operational bikesplus a Pan European as a backup, along with a Vauxhall Vectra carand a PR stand. LEEBS is avoluntary group, so if you wouldlike to help in any way, visitwww.lebbs.org or call JohnSharratt on 01507 529401.

The Transport ResearchLaboratory in Berkshire (TRL)is conducting a self-fundedresearch project to try todetermine what factors aretaken into account by riderswhen purchasing a new helmet. This survey is part of a wider

study into the factors that maycause helmet loss in collisions, leaving the rider without thisessential form of protection. Both current and historicaccident data suggests that thismay occur in about 10% ofcollisions, and while some ofthis is due to riders failing tofasten their helmets correctly;there are clearly documentedcases of fastened helmetscoming loose.Initial findings from the

survey responses so far indicate:

Get ready for the return of the‘PACT’ campaign, designed tohelp bikers stay safe on the roadin the months ahead.Performance, Air pressure,

Condition and Tread, is onceagain the central theme in a rangeof posters and other promotionalmaterials which help to raiseawareness about the importanceof looking after bike tyres. The message is simple – to

get the best performance fromthe bike, whether it isimproved handling, grip or fueleconomy, riders should make aPACT with their tyres byensuring they’re properlyinflated, in a good conditionand have plenty of tread.Info: www.tyresafe.org

Only about 40% of riders havetheir heads measured at the timeof sale – and some have boughthelmets that they can pull off, even though they appeared tobe a correct fit. This suggests aserious point of sale failure and alack of understanding by salesstaff and purchasers.

30% of users have had issueswith helmet fit, often because aparticular brand or range is thewrong internal shape.

About 15% of helmets arepurchased through the internet, producing an enhancedpotential for the purchase of ahelmet that is the wrong shapeor size.

The majority of riders have thechin straps loose and can passeither one or two fingers beneaththe chinstrap and their chins.

Given a gentle foot on the throttle, the Twizy willcreep away, dead slow, but put your foot down and ittakes off quite briskly. Renault claims 0-28mph in 6.1seconds, and it feels about the same as an average125, with plenty of acceleration around town, and notembarrassed coming out of 30 and 40 limits. In fact, itkeeps accelerating at the same rate up to 50mph (topspeed). On paper it’s fast because you’re so close tothe ground and (unless you’ve paid for side windows)the wind whips past your helmetless head.

It’s great fun, because the Twizy has quick, precisesteering and stiff suspension, so it reminds you of ago-kart or an old Mini (the original one – half thesize, twice the fun of BMW’s version), backed up bya turning circle of just six metres. The brakes toowork well, and put a little power back into thebattery, though not enough to turn this into aperpetual motion machine.

SQUEEZING INSo far so good. The downside is that the stiffsuspension gives a bumpy ride and you soon getadept at steering around potholes and speedcushions. Without a heater the Twizy gets chilly andwet, especially in winter. I wore most of the samegear I would on a bike plus a woolly hat, but inwarm weather (if we ever see it) you can drivein normal clothes.

e live in interesting times. Until now, there were scooters and motorcycleson one side, cars on the other. Butwe’re heading for a less certain, more fluid future, where thesedistinctions could become

meaningless. Electric bicycles have already blurredthe boundaries between push bikes and mopeds; nowthe same is happening to the border between scootersand full-size cars – welcome to the quadricycle.

The French have been making them for years, butnewly standardised EU laws mean they’ve finallymade it over here.

Legally, there are two types of quadricycles –‘light’ and ‘heavy’ (see box) – and either way theyopen up whole new possibilities for electric power.Electric cars are all very well, but they’re heavy andexpensive, whereas lightweight quads (let’s call themthat) are far more suited to battery power over shorturban journeys.

But the Renault Twizy, which was launched inFrance a year ago, is different. Other quadricycles tryto pass themselves off as miniature cars, but the Twizyis clearly intended as a halfway house between ascooter and a full-size four-wheeler. That’s why itdoesn’t have any doors, windows (both are optional),not to mention a heater, carpets or radio. Now theaverage cosseted car driver would probably run a mileat such barbarity, but bike riders won’t. So does theTwizy maker a decent commuter alternative to a 125?

DRIVINGThe Twizy I tested makes just 13kW (17bhp), whichstarts to look a bit feeble when you think that itweighs nearly half a tonne. This sounds like a recipefor escargot-like performance, but the good news isthat it doesn’t work like that in practice.

Getting into the Twizy is unlike anything else. Hingeup the gullwing half-doors (£595 extra, but I can’t seemany UK drivers doing without them), hop in and slipon the seat belt – no helmet of course. Turn the keyone click and the dash lights up – there’s a digitalspeedo, clock and a graphic battery level indicator.Turn the key again against a spring (like aconventional car) and it goes beep, which means it’sready to go. Press the D or R button (forward orreverse) and release the handbrake by pressing quitehard on the brake pedal, and you’re off.

Is it a scooter? Is it a car? No, it’s aquadricycle, and it’s a cross betweenthe two (and electric to boot).

This little 125cc got toScotland and backwithout complaining

The Lexmoto Street isabsolutely typical of thebreed of naked 125.Air-cooled overhead camfour-stroke singlemustering 10bhp anddriving through a five-speed gearbox.Carburettor, drum rearbrake... this is motorcyclingat its most basic.

There is room for apillion, but even solo theperformance is limited, tosay the least. An indicated50-55mph doesn’t strainanything and it’s possibleto see 65mph on thespeedo, given a followingwind, but little bikes likethis are best kept offmotorways. Reasonablehandling on the Durotyres, the front brake is a

Thebike: LexmotoStreet125bit wooden and the reardrum decidedly weak, butit all does the job and theStreet does look lessgarish and cheap thansome Chinese 125s.

Nor is it some dodgy FarEast import sold overeBay. Importer LlexeterLtd has been around forseveral years now, has adecent spread of dealers

and offers 12 monthswarranty plus full sparesbackup. How was the bikeafter its 1200-milemarathon? A bit grubbierwith a flappy chain (whichquick adjustment cured),the ignition switch wasgetting sticky and theright-hand mirror a littlefloppy, but apart fromthat all was well.

less than 200 miles on the clock when I picked it up.Maybe it’ll loosen up.The Street is small enough to make filtering through

traffic a doddle, but you need your wits about you atthe front of the queue. Why? Because on an autoscooter, you just whack the throttle open and zipsafely away. A geared 125 is more complicated – firstgear feels low enough to climb the side of a house, soby 15mph it’s given its all and you have to change up,which happens again at 25-ish, putting another dent inyour acceleration. By this time the cars you’vejust overtaken are snapping at your heels,

-ere’s an amazing fact with which toastound all your non-motorcyclingfriends. Ask them to name the mosteconomical vehicle currently on salein the UK and most will come backwith a hybrid or two, a small diesel

hatchback, or a Smart car. If pressed to include twowheels, they might acknowledge Piaggio’s MP3 Hybrid(if they know it exists) or ‘one of those little scooters,’or a moped. Anyway, the message is that to save fuelyou have to go a high tech route.Well you don’t, because the most economical means

of transport short of a bicycle is a four-stroke 125ccmotorcycle. No hybrid drive, no fuel injection and(ignition apart) no electronics, yet it sips fuel slowerthan anything else. Yes, the Honda CG125 has a lot toanswer for. The big H made millions of them. You’d think no one seeking ‘go-to-work’ transport

would choose a naked bike over an auto, but they do.The ancient CG outsold plenty of 125 scooters andthough it’s since been eclipsed by younger bikes, the125 naked class is still pretty strong.Who’s buying them? Returnee middle-aged

commuters who want a ‘proper motorbike’, teenagerswho don’t get along with scooters? Who cares? Thepoint is that most of these 125 geared bikes will returnmore than 100mpg with careful riding and withdecent-sized tanks they’ll also go a long way betweenrefills – Honda claims 370 miles for its currentCBF125. That’s twice as far as most proper touringbikes and more than a petrol Ford Focus. The best way to demonstrate this fact would be to

ride one a long way. So that’s why I was sitting on a125 in Bristol at 7am one dark morning. The aim – toget to Glasgow on a single tank. The bike was aLexmoto Street 125, a Chinese copy of Suzuki’sGS125, chosen because the importer isn’t far fromme. I’m sure other geared 125s would have donejust as well. The tank supposedly holds 13 litres (just under

three gallons) and I knew from experience thatthe Street would give just over 120mpg withmixed riding. Say a range of 340 miles. It’s 363from Bristol to Glasgow (according to my Collinsroad atlas), so with some gentle riding we mightjust do it, especially if I cheat by filling up atSevern Bridge Services (14 miles north of Bristol)and call it River Severn to River Clyde.

Wet startIt’s drizzling as I set off, just as the rush hour gets intoits stride. I’d already had a cold ride up from Exeterthe previous night, which reminded me that 125saren’t the best choice to get somewhere quickly. Thebike managed a mere 109mpg, but then it did have

Intercity125 1200miles in three days on a

Chinese 125... or Bristol toGlasgow on a tenner.
