Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
runner-up Madam Rouge (Zoustar)
is a doubtful starter in Saturday’s
Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
with connections confident the rising five-year-
old has bigger things in store next season.
The Chris Waller-trained Madam Rouge, a
dual stakes-winning daughter from the first crop
of Widden Stud’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor), is
one of 23 nominations for the weight for age fillies
and mares feature race at Eagle Farm.
But New Zealand agent Bruce Sherwin,
who oversees the mare’s part-owner Raffles
Thoroughbred Racing’s Australiasian interests,
yesterday suggested that she was likely to be

Madam Rouge won the Magic Millions
Sprint (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January and has subsequently raced in
Sydney and Adelaide before returning to Queensland for last week’s Group 1 race.
She was narrowly beaten by the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained
Tyzone (Written Tycoon).
“I think the initial thought was to save her and go again next season,”
Sherwin said yesterday.
“She made such good improvement from her three-year-old to her four-
year-old year and the key the other day was getting back on a good track.
“She is a markedly superior horse on better ground and she proved
that the other day and she also proved that she was up to that Group 1
standard when she gets conditions to suit.”
Madam Rouge won her second
start as a juvenile, returning at three
for a first-up victory before contesting
a number of stakes races without
breaking through. At four she has
been successful in Listed and Group
3 level to go with her lucrative Magic
Millions performance.
“She’s been a work in progress
as she took a little while (to
mature),” Sherwin said.
“She used to be a bit keen through the mid-stages of her races
but she is getting more professional as she ages and as she gets more
experience.
“It’s been a gradual progression but she’s continued to make those
steps as she’s got older. The future definitely looks positive for her.
“I would leave (the decision to back up in the Dane Ripper) to Chris,
but the early indications were that she would probably go to the paddock.”
Meanwhile, the continued closure of the Queensland border will
also scupper plans for a tilt at the Dane Ripper Stakes for talented NSW
provincial mare Oakfield Missile (Not A Single Doubt).
Wyong trainer Damien Lane yesterday confirmed the five-year-old,
who won a heat of the Provincial Championships in February, would
return to Rosehill on Saturday, the scene of her win two starts ago.
“With the restrictions and the like, I was hoping they were going to
change and we could have gone up with her,” Lane said.
“But we’d have to send her up and get somebody else to look after her
and take her to the races, so the owner was more than happy to stay and
race in Sydney.”
A homebred for well-known Port Stephens businessman Bruce
Mackenzie, who is also active at the weanling and yearling sales to add
to his racing interests who carry the Oakfield moniker, the daughter of
Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) is nominated for a Benchmark 78

First for Real ImpactGeorge Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) winner
Real Impact (Deep Impact) sired his first
winner in Australia when the Paul Messara-
trained Outburst (2 g ex Raweesha by Redoute’s
Choice) scored on his second start at Scone
yesterday. Outburst quickened impressively to
beat Saquon (No Nay Never) by half a length
with Underboss (Animal Kingdom) a further
two and three-quarter lengths back in third.
Outburst races in the colours of Arrowfield Stud
having failed to make his $20,000 reserve at the
2019 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
He is the third foal and first winner out of the
Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Raweesha,
whose dam Wood Lane (Sadler’s Wells) is a
sister to French Group 2 winner Moon Queen.
Moon Queen is the dam of Group 3 winner
Beauty Parlour (Elusive Quality) as well as
Kooringal Stud’s stakes-winning stallion The
Brother War (War Front). Real Impact, who
shuttled to Arrowfield for three seasons, made
an immediate impression with his first crop in
Japan, which includes Lauda Sion, winner of
the NHK Mile Cup (Gr 1, 1600m).
Blazing Miss chasinghat-trickA crack at a late-season stakes race in Brisbane
looms for Sydney three-year-old Blazing Miss
(Sizzling) if she continues her good form at
Rosehill on Saturday. The Mark Newnham-
trained filly will chase her third-straight city
win when she runs in Saturday's 1100-metre
Benchmark 88 handicap, having posted back-
to-back victories at Randwick last month.
"Blazing Miss has been in very good form,"
Newnham said. "She's up in grade again to a
Benchmark 88 but her form warrants it. She
has always been a fairly capable filly but she
has come on well again this preparation. She
has won two Saturday races now and she's a
good progressive filly. There might be a race in
Brisbane for her after this but we'll get this one
out of the way first." Newnham has pencilled in
the Bright Shadow Stakes (Listed, 1200m) for
fillies and mares in Brisbane on July 4 for the
filly to potentially chase her first black-type win.
Hang Man lookingfor a winter winMike Moroney believes there was plenty of
merit in Hang Man's (Windsor Knot) last start
third at Caulfield as he prepares the gelding
for his next winter assignment. Hang Man is
yet to win from four starts this preparation,
registering two placings, but Moroney believes
the six-year-old was an unlucky loser on his
most recent start. "He probably should have
won his last start," Moroney said. "He got a
torrid run. He drew the outside gate and had to
do all the work up the hill and got caught three
and four wide the rest of the trip facing the
breeze. It was a fantastic run. I thought it was
just about one of the runs of the day because he
only really got beaten in the last 50 metres. He
faced the breeze and had the audacity to look
the winner at the 100-metre mark."
Humidor to contest WA featureThree-time Group 1 winner Humidor (Teofilo)
is set to have his second start for Lindsey Smith
in Saturday's Hyperion Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at
Belmont. The seven-year-old finished tenth when
making his debut for Smith in the Belmont Sprint
(Gr 3, 1400m) at the end of May, beaten just three
and a half lengths. “I thought it was pretty good,
he got close to some nice sprinters over that
distance,” Smith said. “I hope he’ll run top four on
Saturday and that will give him a chance to win
the Strickland Stakes. History showed, when I
used to watch him, he’d always lay in, but he went
pretty straight the other day. Maybe his old legs
are feeling okay just trudging through the sand, so
he got a pass mark the other day and I wouldn’t
imagine he’ll go backwards.”
D-Day for Black Heart BartSmith is set to be doubly-represented in the
Hyperion with Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars)
joining Humidor in what could be a final race
for the 61-start veteran, who failed to beat a rival
home when he contested last month’s Roma Cup
(Gr 3, 1200m). "I'm putting blinkers on an old
horse, you'd think that I'm starting to get on shaky
ground,” Smith told WA broadcaster TABRadio. "If
he's not sort of top five, we'll all come down and
pat him and he's got 17,000 people lined-up to
take him, so he's more liked than I am."
Hyperion a career-defining race for Angelic RulerAngelic Ruler (Universal Ruler) will attempt
to end her campaign on a high when the
Belmont Sprint third lines up in the Hyperion.
Ben Pearce, who trains the mare with brother
Dan, told The Races WA: “We will test her out
at the mile and this will decide where she goes
in the spring. Our thought is at the 1200 metres
she is not sharp enough to win a Winterbottom
Stakes. If she gets the mile of the Hyperion we
can look at a Railway Stakes prep. If she doesn’t
run it out we may have to take her to Melbourne
for mare races. Those mare races won’t be as
strong as the Winterbottom Stakes. If she can’t
get the mile she is probably better off being over
there than here.”

Polly Gray joins Waller stableStakes-winning mare Polly Grey (Azamour) has
crossed the Tasman to join the stable of champion
trainer Chris Waller. The five-year-old won the
Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) last October
before placing in the Thompson Handicap (Gr
3, 1600m) and Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m). “We
decided to send her to Chris Waller, just to see
how she goes and give her an opportunity to get
some black-type in Australia hopefully,” former
trainer and part-owner Kylie Fawcett said. “We
have leased a half share in her to one of our clients,
John Thompson from Auckland. Hopefully we
have a bit of fun with her.”
Long-range plan for Ms CatherineMs Catherine (Shooting To Win) is set to make
her return in a race over 1000 metres for three-
year-olds at Moonee Valley on Saturday, with
trainer Henry Dwyer eyeing some lofty targets
for the unbeaten filly. “We had a bit of time up
our sleeves and she could have been back racing
two or three weeks ago and this race looked
suitable,” Dwyer told Racing.com. “There’s a
nice progression of races for her every couple of
weeks through to a race like the Monash or the
Bletchingly to try and add some black type to
her CV. I don’t think there is much for her in the
spring anyway, so if we can go through that late
winter and be race fit… then those horses are
generally the ones that win those early spring
sprints. Then we will give her a nice break over
the spring and then really target the autumn
with her. I reckon she will be really good around
that 1000 metres, 1100 metres at Caulfield. I
reckon a race like the Oakleigh Plate would be
the end game in the autumn.”
Strong book for Written TycoonFresh from siring his ninth individual elite-level
winner when Tyzone (Written Tycoon) bagged
last week’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m),
Written Tycoon (Iglesia) is set to cover a quality
book of 35 mares this year standing at Arrowfield
Stud. Headed by champion three-year-old filly
Shoals (Fastnet Rock) and her dam The Broken
Shore (Hussonet), the group also includes Group
2 winner Noire (Foxwedge), two-year-old Group
winners Teaspoon (Snitzel) and Honesty Prevails
(Redoute’s Choice), Group 3 winner Angel Of
Mercy (Hussonet) and Rationality (Flying Spur),
sister of three-time Group 1 winner Mentality
(Flying Spur). Written Tycoon is closing in on his
third $10 million domestic season, and his tally of
eight individual stakes winners equals his career-
best record of 2017/18. His fee for 2020 is $77,000
(inc GST).
‘Green team’ restrictions to easeA group of high-profile Victorian jockeys
have been given the go ahead to start riding
trackwork again at selected venues. As part
of the protocols in place during the Covid-19
pandemic, jockeys in Victoria have been split
into two groups - a green team and a gold team.
Jockeys in the gold team have been allowed
to continue riding trackwork and jump-outs
along with race meetings, but the group of 20
riders in the green team agreed to only ride on
race days. The jockeys in the respective groups
have been separated in different rooms at race
meetings. Recently, Racing Victoria relaxed the
rules slightly to allow jockeys from the green
team to ride jump-outs at six selected Victorian
tracks. Those jockeys were given permission to
commence riding trackwork at Caulfield and
Sandown yesterday and from Friday can ride
trackwork at Flemington and Mornington.
From next Monday they will be allowed to
ride trackwork at Cranbourne and Ballarat.
Included in those 20 jockeys are Craig Williams,
Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Jye McNeil and
Ben Melham who sit top five in this season's
Melbourne premiership.
Crowds likely at Tasmanian meetingsTasmanian trainers are eagerly awaiting the
return to racing with 190 horses nominated
for the first meeting back at Launceston. And
crowds will immediately be allowed back on
course, restricted to restaurant areas. Racing in
Tasmania was halted in early April because of
the coronavirus outbreak with its return set for
Sunday. Tasracing chief executive Paul Eriksson
said 138 individual horses had been entered
across the seven programmed races, however
the exact number of races to be held on Sunday
is still to be determined. "We'll definitely have
eight races, and we'll make decisions about a
ninth and tenth race," Eriksson told RSN. "The
industry has been brilliant in what it has done
in its support with the protocols and procedures
we have had to put in place. The trials have
gone exceptionally well and there has been a lot
of horses at the trials and we are very happy and
raring to go." Up to 80 patrons will be allowed to
see the reopening of racing on track.
Nothdurft to fight lengthy banQueensland's premiership-leading jockey Baylee
Nothdurft will take his appeal against a three-
month ban to the next level after failing in an
internal review. Nothdurft rode Vega One (Lope
De Vega) when the gelding finished fourth in
an Open Handicap (1000m) after coming from
last on the home turn at the Sunshine Coast
on April 25. Stewards gathered evidence about
Nothdurft's ride in the straight and at the home
turn before adjourning an inquiry. At a resumed
hearing Nothdurft was charged with not taking all
reasonable and permissible measures to ensure
Vega One finished in the best possible placing.
Nothdurft was found guilty and received a three-
month suspension, due to finish on August 16.
But Nothdurft was granted a stay and allowed to
ride pending the result of an internal review. In
a short statement internal reviewer Kane Ashby
confirmed the suspension will remain. Nothdurft
has until the end of the week to lodge an appeal to
the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Victorian apprentice injured in fallApprentice Kiran Quilty spent last night in
hospital following a race fall at Pakenham.
Quilty completed the course aboard The Real
Wasabi (Fighting Sun) in a maiden race before
her mount clipped heels after the winning post
and fell. After being assessed on track, Quilty
was transported to Dandenong hospital for
further tests. Victorian Jockeys' Association
chief executive Matt Hyland said Quilty was
suffering concussion. "Her scans are OK but
they want to keep her in overnight just to keep
an eye on her and she is likely to be released in
the morning," Hyland said. Quilty commenced
riding in February and has three wins to her
credit from 48 rides.

Mackay trainers finedQueensland country trainer John Manzelmann
has been fined $6,000 after two of his horses
returned positive swabs to an anti-inflammatory
steroid. Manzelmann's horses Zoffany Rocket
(Zoffany) won at Rockhampton on August 23,
which was followed by Canford Tree (Canford
Cliffs) winning at the same track on August 28.
Swabs taken from both horses showed traces of
the prohibited substance dexamethasone in their
urine. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, an inquiry
was conducted by written correspondence and
Manzelmann was provided with documentary
evidence from the Racing Science Centre and
the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory.
Manzelmann pleaded guilty to two charges
of bringing a horse to race with a prohibited
substance in its system. Stewards said in assessing
the penalty they considered Manzelmann's guilty
plea and the fact he had five previous offences
for prohibited substances. Manzelmann was
fined $3,000 for each charge. Another Mackay
trainer Jade Doolan was fined $2,000 after her
horse Captain's Way (Captain Sonador) returned
a positive to dexamethasone when winning in
Cairns on September 14.
NEW ZEALAND
Cyber Attack wins Te Rapa trialListed winner Cyber Attack (Shamexpress)
could be in line to make a return to action on
the first day racing resumes in New Zealand
after winning a trial at Te Rapa yesterday. The
four-year-old was among Tony Pike’s nine-
strong team that had a hit-out and he could be
one of three or four runners for the stable on
resumption day at Pukekohe on June 20. “He
is always good fresh and is not far away from
being a stakes class sprinter on the right tracks
in a reasonably fresh state. I think he will be
very competitive first-up,” Pike said.
Ocean Emperor’s service fee setThree-time Group 2 winner Ocean Emperor
(Zabeel) will stand for a fee of $6,000 (plus GST)
for the forthcoming breeding season, a reduction
from $7,000 (plus GST) at his initial season at stud
last year. Retired to Gary and Jenny Hennessy’s
Weowna Park, Ocean Emperor covered 20
mares in his inaugural season at stud. A $450,000
yearling purchase at Karaka from the draft of
Waikato Stud, Ocean Emperor had 28 starts for
Gary Hennessy and recorded nine wins and five
placings. “We fully understand how tough it is for
breeders as we are involved in the full circle of
racing and breeding,” Gary Hennessy said. “We
have dropped his fee even though his pedigree has
been enhanced via his close relation Probabeel
becoming a dual Karaka Million winner and a
Group 1 winner in Australia this season. We are
looking forward to his first foals this spring from
some very good race winning and Book 1 calibre
mares.”
Little Avondale supports weanling saleLittle Avondale Stud are confident the New
Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale
will continue the successful trend of previous
auctions despite having had to move to an
online format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Wairarapa nursery will offer a select
line-up of youngsters in the auction to run
on the Gavelhouse Plus platform, including
two by their exciting young shuttle stallion
Time Test (Dubawi). Weanlings from the first
southern hemisphere crop of Dubawi’s (Dubai
Millennium) dual Group 2-winning son have
generated a large amount of interest and Little
Avondale’s Sam Williams is looking forward to
seeing how they will be received on the market.
“It hasn’t been easy to part with them,” Williams
said. “I gather a lot of breeders with his (Time
Test’s) foals have held onto them, but I really
need to showcase our first season sire.” The
Little Avondale weanling draft will be available
for inspection from 10am Friday 19th June at
Waikato Stud. Bidding opens on Gavelhouse
Plus tomorrow and closes at 3pm on June 21.

Every win counts as Purton and Moreira dig inZac Purton and Joao Moreira will renew their
rivalry at the top of the premiership table with the
title-chasing pair each having a full back of rides
at Happy Valley this evening. Purton leads his
nearest pursuer by four wins, 128 to 124, with ten
meetings left this season and the championship
protagonists head to the city track with nine rides
apiece. Each will side with some of their biggest
backers: Purton’s rides are for seven trainers
who between them have provided him with 64
wins from 259 mounts this term at a 24.7 per cent
strike-rate, while Moreira has the support of six
handlers who have pushed 294 rides his way for
57 wins and a 19.4 per cent strike-rate. “It’s just
the way it’s worked out with the rides,” Purton said
yesterday. “I’m trying to get a nice ride wherever I
can and this time it’s just the way it’s happened.
But they’ve always been good supporters of mine
and they’ve continued to be – hopefully they can
just give me a little bit of a nudge. These things
come into play, for sure.”

A surprise win for Kingman’s (Invincible Spirit)
son Cormorant (3 c ex Shemya by Dansili) in the
Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown
yesterday provided the Juddmonte sire with
his 19th individual stakes winner. Sent off the

under Padraig Beggy to beat stablemate Russian
Emperor (Galileo) by half a length and give
Aidan O’Brien a 13th win in the race. Another
Ballydolye inmate, Iberia (Galileo), was a further
length and a half away in third. Purchased for a
seven-figure sum at the Tattersalls Book 1 sale
in 2018, Cormorant is the second foal out of the
Dansili (Danehill) mare Shemya, who herself is a

23 for No Nay Never
Coolmore’s No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) sired
his 23rd individual stakes winner when Love
Locket (3 f ex Starlet by Sea The Stars) took out
yesterday’s Leopardstown Fillies’ Trial Stakes
(Gr 3, 7f). Making it four wins from the first four
races on the card for Aidan O’Brien, she scored
by a length and a half from Know It Al (Lord
Kanaloa), who just got the better of the winner’s
stablemate Precious Moments (Gleneagles)
in their battle for second spot. A €700,000
purchase by MV Magnier at Goffs Orby Yearling
Sale in 2018, Love Locket is the second foal out
of the Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Starlet,
whose dam, the Listed-placed Treasure The
Lady (Indian Ridge) is a half-sister to dula
Derby winner High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells).
No Nay Never shuttled to Jerry’s Plains for four
seasons, covering 391 mares. He now stands
for a fee of €175,000 (Approx. AUD $285,000) at
Coolmore’s County Tipperary Stud, Ireland.
134 for Rock Of Gibraltar Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill) sired his 134th
individual stakes winner as the Jim Bolger-
trained Ten Year Ticket (3 g ex Bulrushes
by Byron) remained unbeaten courtesy of
a neck win over King Of Athens (War Front)
in Leopardstown’s Irish 2,000 Guineas
Trial Stakes. Prince of Naples (Holy Roman
Emperor) was a further length and three
quarters away in third. Ten Year Ticket is a
half-brother to stakes winners Snazzy Jazzy
(Red Jazz) and Ross Castle (Bushranger).
Rock Of Gibraltar stands at Coolmore in
Ireland for a fee of €6,000 ($9800).
172 for Exceed And ExcelExceed And Excel’s (Danehill) son Sceptical
(4 g ex Jealous Again by Trippi) looks to have
a bright future following his impressive win
in the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 5.5f ) at Naas
on Monday where he provided the Darley
stallion with his 172nd individual stakes
winner. Trained by Denis Hogan, the four-
year-old quickened clear to beat Southern
Horse (Roman Ruler) by three lengths with
Buffer Zone (Bated Breath) another length
away in third. Sceptical is one of three
winners out of the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr
2, 5f ) winner Jealous Again (Trippi), also
dam of Group performer Queen Of Sicily
(Cape Cross). Exceed And Excel will stand at
Kelvinside for a fee of $132,000 (inc GST) in
2020.
17 for SepoyAnother Darley stallion to get on the scoresheet
at Naas was Sepoy (Elusive Quality) who sired
his 17th individual stakes winner when Punita
Arora (3 f ex Wojha by Pivotal) took out the
Committed Stakes (Listed 5.5f). Trained by
Jessica Harrington, the three-year-old notched
the second win of her career when beating
Alligator Alley (Kingman) by a length. Pistoletto
(War Front) was a further half length away in
third. Sepoy stands at Northwood Park Stud at
a fee of $7,700 (inc GST).
Gordon Lord Byron diesGordon Lord Byron (Byron), the Irish-trained
sprinter who posted a shock win in the George
Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) in 2014, died after
collapsing during a routine piece of work on the
gallops yesterday morning. The 12-year-old, who
won Group 1 races in three different countries
and two continents, took his connections on a
rags-to-riches journey, having been purchased
for just €2,000 as a foal. During a 108-race career,
he recorded 16 victories, earning over €2.1
million (AUD $3.85m) in prize-money. "We're
gutted but he was pampered every day of his
life and was never as happy as he was at the
moment," trainer Tom Hogan said. "These things
happen, though. He was just doing a routine bit
of work ahead of his intended run this weekend
at the Curragh. He'd actually been working
better than he was last year. He looked superb
and was in great form."

- on the beautiful peninsula on Melbourne’s
door-stop - to the border town of Albury which
he undertook just less than two years ago.
“Lot of people thought I was nuts,” Beer told
ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday as he returned
from inspecting - in Sydney - the Godolphin
draft currently being offered on the Inglis on-
line platform.
He may well have wondered, earlier this
year, if they were right as bushfires threatened
border townships forcing his stable to close
for two weeks and that immediately before
the onset of Covid-19 which has prevented
his staff from travelling to Victoria - even the
12 kilometres from his on-course base at the
Albury racecourse to the Wodonga track; the
twin cities separated by the Murray River and
separated into different states.
However, a 20 per cent strike rate since
mid-May - with winners including Princess
Cordelia (Bel Esprit) at Randwick last Saturday
and debut successes with colts by Brazen Beau
and Written Tycoon - has expunged any doubts
even if Beer describes 2020 on the border as
“nothing short of horrendous”.
In truth, Beer had very few misgivings about
the move and certainly has no regrets.
“Mornington’s expensive. I could have
stayed there and probably been renting for
the rest of my life and all the time while there,
you’re hearing constant announcements from
Racing New South Wales pumping up country
and provincial racing. I thought ‘what the hell
am I staying here for’.
“Maybe 15 to 20 years ago, you couldn’t
have hoped to get nice horses to train if you
weren’t at Flemington or Caulfield or Randwick
but that’s changed plus the facilities here
(Albury) are great and it’s less frantic. We start
at 6.30 am. At Mornington, I was a 29 year-old
behaving like a grumpy 70 year-old and falling
asleep at 7.30 every night.
“I can have a life here. Go to bed at
midnight and still get six hours sleep,”
he said.
Beer is probably as well known for
his Twitter account as he is for training -
which is not to denigrate his training skills,
rather it reflects the usually humorous
nature of his Twitter observations which
has a strong following and, in fact, aided
in growing his ownership base.
“Twitter’s definitely helped
because, I think, I haven’t tried to use it
as a marketing tool. It’s just been fun and people
have recognised that and come on board. We
may not have sheikhs or massive breeders as
owners but we have plenty of mums and dads
and tradies and cricket club members.
“People who want to be involved without
spending a huge amount of money and for many
of them it’s the experience, it doesn’t matter
whether it’s Corowa or Caulfield,” he said.
Beer draped himself in a TAB sash and
posted the photo, captioned ‘can’t we talk
corporate sponsorship@glennmunsieTAB?’
after Princess Cordelia’s win in the TAB-
sponsored Highway. Munsie hasn’t come back
to him. “But I haven’t given up hope,” Beer said.
The whole online experience has altered the
face of racing according to Beer. “You can now
deliver an excellent product, training a racehorse
from just about anywhere. These days you get
fantastic coverage of even the lesser meetings
from Sky Thoroughbred Central and Racing.Com.

“Obviously people haven’t been able to go
racing of late and fewer tend to go in any case
but they’re still connected via the TV coverage.
Fewer people come to stable opens these days
but they want to be serviced by emails and
videos. We send a two minute edited video of
every horse once a fortnight.
“And I’m finding that many people would
rather come to Albury to see their horse race
and make a weekend of it, than battle the city
traffic to go to a Pakenham or Cranbourne night
meeting,” he said.
The NSW focus on Country Championship
races and the TAB Highways, restricted to
trainers licensed and operating from one of
eight designated country racing regions in
NSW or the ACT, plus the support of Victorian
owners and breeders Steve and Sally Watkins
have been significant to Beer’s success.
Princess Cordelia has now claimed two TAB
Highways and won about $100,000 this season
- a lucrative return for a horse rated 65 and
secured by Beer for just $36,000 at Melbourne
Premier from the Swettenham Stud draft.
“I don’t know why I didn’t sack her after
her first few starts but she’s kept improving
and more than paid her way. These Highway
races were part of the reason I moved to Albury.
They’re such a target, such an incentive at a
time when the big stables are getting bigger and
bigger. It’s rare to see a country trainer winning
city races on a Wednesday or a Saturday these
days.
“When the phone rings now with someone
wanting to send a horse or get involved with
one, the conversation always comes around
to whether it could run in one of those
Highways,” said Beer who also, in February,
won the $150,000 Albury heat of the Country
Championships with Sky Call (Domesday) for
the Watkins’.
More recently, Beer won the keenly sought
Jack Maher Classic at Wodonga with debutant
Branders Rule; the half-brother to Sky Call by
Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and, 12 days
later, produced another newcomer Matsumoto
(Written Tycoon) to win at $61 at Wangaratta
- both owned by Steve Watkins who trained
250/1 chance Abaridy (Arbogast) to win the
1986 Caulfield Guineas.
“Steve’s been a great supporter of the stable
and stuck despite the fact that we had a lot more
bad luck than good at the start. It’s humbling
really to get these very nice horse from a man
who’s a Group 1-winning trainer himself. I met
him through Sally as we spell horses at her
Willaroon Park property which is about an hour
from us,” he said.
Branders Rule won the Maher Classic
decisively and may be destined for better things
according to the trainer. “He did a good job
given we don’t have the same number
of jump-outs or races for two-year-olds
up here. He’s gone to the paddock and
hopefully improves further with a bit of
time,” Beer said.
Matsumoto drifted from $21 to $61
before his debut win, despite having
won a public trial. “It was a very hot
race. I expected him to run well, not
necessarily to win but to be flying home
to run third or fourth,” Beer said.
“So you didn’t back him?", I asked.
“Well, you always have to have a couple of
dollars, don’t you, just in case?” Beer replied.
Fly home he did to win by a length and a quarter
from the US-bred newcomer and co-favourite
American Whiskey (Declaration Of War).
Under coronavirus restrictions,
Beer’s Victorian runners have to be in the
neighbouring state by 9am the day before the
meeting and without New South Wales-based
staff. It’s also meant that Beer has had a number
of staff living with him in Albury.
“It’s been a tricky situation but fortunately
we’ve been able to keep all our staff. Nobody’s
been laid off and in terms of transporting the
horses, we’ve sent them to Dan McCarthy
at Wangaratta and vice versa when he’s had
runners in New South Wales,” he said.
Beer will soon move to new stables, still
on course. “By the end of the year, we will be
able to accommodate 60 horses in on-course
stabling which will be great. The Club here
is really having a crack and I think there’s the
potential for this to be a real growth area for
training,” he said.
In the meantime, he’ll be focused on the
Godolphin cull. “Not surprisingly, there’s a
lot of nice horses there. I’d be hoping to find a
Country Championships type. They may not
be cheap but you are buying a horse with a full
veterinary history from the time it was a foal.
“You can buy a car for $5000 on Gumtree or
spend a little more and get an ex-demo model,
with a full service history, from a reputable
dealer. That’s the way I’m looking at it,” he said.

Martin Bruechert has seen
plenty in his 35 years in the
breeding industry, but it was
a chance to travel the great
Danehill (Danzig) back to Ireland in late 1993
that remains an everlasting memory.
Danehill had only had three starters in
Australia when he boarded that plane just
before 1993 gave way to 1994 and it was still
difficult to imagine the impact the Coolmore
Stud stalwart would have on the country’s
breeding industry.
Bruechert ended up spending the 1994
northern hemisphere breeding season at
Coolmore Stud in Ireland, working with
stallions like Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer),
Be My Guest (Northern Dancer), Caerleon
(Nijinsky) and Night Shift (Northern Dancer) in
addition to Danehill.
“It was a great experience, and possibly I
was working with the greatest stallion line up
in the world at that time,” Bruechert told ANZ
Bloodstock News yesterday. “Danehill was the
most easygoing stallion and a real professional
in the serving barn. He had his first runners
in Australia around that time with Danzero
winning the Golden Slipper while I was there.
“I remember the weather in Ireland too. I
don’t think I saw the sun for three months!”
Bruechert, who has worked once more for
Coolmore over the past six years, is nominated
for the prestigious Dedication to Breeding

Award, one of seven categories that will be
recognised through the 2020 Stud and Stable
Staff Awards, supported by Godolphin.
The Dedication to Breeding Award is
sponsored by Magic Millions and has been won
in the past by Widden Stud’s David Merrick,
Coolmore’s Patrick Sheehan, Vikki Cannon from
Gooree Park, Jenny Watson at Armidale Stud and
Bernadette Hamill, representing Yarradale Stud.
Bruechert is “the consummate horseman”
who deserves his place on the honour roll,
according to his colleague Max Nudd, who
nominated him for this award.
“Martin handles all situations on the farm,
he’s a brilliant pedigree analyst, a generous
mentor, he has a great understanding of a
mare’s reproductive cycle. There is hardly a role
he couldn’t fill,” Nudd said.
Horses have been a lifelong passion for
Bruechert, with his path in breeding beginning
at Lindsay Park in 1985.
“I grew up in a horse riding family,” he said.
“Sundays were spent competing at shows and
gymkhanas around central Victoria. Once into
my teens, I started working on a nearby stud
farm and when I finished school, I moved to
South Australia to work at Lindsay Park.
“I was young and green when I commenced
work at Lindsay Park. I made some good
lifelong friends there, and I enjoyed working for
a successful farm and stable.”
Since then, his work has included stints
at Arrowfield, Darley’s Kelvinside stud, The
Pines Stud in Victoria, Rheinwood Pastoral
and Cressfield before joining Coolmore’s Jerrys
Plains farm in 2014.
“All the roles I’ve had have been
hands-on,” he said. “I’ve managed
several small farms which I enjoyed
immensely. I was assistant manager at
Cressfield and Darley, as it was called
then. I don’t know if I had a title at
Arrowfield, but I played a key role in the
running of the farm.
“I have fond memories working
at Arrowfield. We worked really hard
and very long days, but we had great
success with the horses that were bred when I
was there. Darley at that time was very young
and the farm was developing around us. The
stallion parades and the open day were just
taken to the next level.
“Coolmore has provided me with many
great opportunities in Ireland, and now in
Australia. The dedication to the breeding
industry here is second to none.”
Bruechert is a supervisor at Coolmore,
involved heavily with the foals and mares.
“I’m in charge of educating and weaning
the foals,” he said. “During the stud season I’m
responsible for the care of the mares as they
progress to the respective foaling units, the
visiting dry mares once out of the receiving areas.
“There are always some nice foals. Off the
top of my head, foals that I’ve weaned that have
been successful are Oohood, Sherwood Forest,
Tuscan Queen and Tulip.”
Labelled a ‘brilliant pedigree analyst’ by
Nudd, Bruechert believes that knowing about
the bloodstock he’s caring for helps him to
perform his job to the best of his ability.
“I’m certainly not a pedigree expert,” he
said “But I do like to know a little about
the bloodstock I’m looking after and I
enjoy looking through the yearling and
bloodstock sales catalogues. I like to
see pedigrees with plenty of fillies and
mares which will hopefully keep that
pedigree going. I like seeing plenty of
winners to runners too.
“I hate seeing fillies and mares that
have been overmated; if they are going
to be a commercial prospect, they don’t
usually live up to the expectations of
the owners.”
Bruechert is not only dedicated to
his role, but is also committed to acting
as a leader and a mentor to those coming into
the industry.
“If I can teach someone something new or in
a different way and it helps that person become
a better horse person then it is also good for
the horses in our care,” he said. “We all learn in
different ways and so do the horses. Having a better
understanding of your working environment
makes it much more enjoyable and safer.”
Asked for his favourite racing memory,
Bruechert goes back to his early days in the industry.
“It has to be Bonecrusher winning the Cox Plate
from Waverley Star,” he said. “I wasn’t at the track
that day, but the hype building up to that year’s Cox
Plate was very exciting and they did not disappoint.
“Bonecrusher and Waverley Star broke
away from the rest of the field at about the
800-metre mark, and I thought Waverley Star
was going to win, but Bonecrusher dug deep
and got the win. Both horses were brilliant that
day. If I remember correctly Bonecrusher came
back from injury to defeat At Talaq in similar
fashion in the Australian Cup.”
The Dedication to Breeding Award winner
receives, from Magic Millions, a trophy and
$10,000, with $3,000 to their employer to share
amongst staff. A humble Bruechert is honoured
to be nominated and placed among such a
strong group of finalists.
“Being recognised for my commitment to an
industry that I have been a part of for so long, and
have enjoyed working in, is a great and humbling
feeling,” Bruechert said. “Winning would be nice,
but all the nominees are deserving.
“I can’t thank the organisers enough for this
sort of recognition. So many people working on
farms and in stables are never noticed, so it’s
great when it happens.”
The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be
presented during a virtual ceremony on June 17.

VERDICT Class-dropper Amazing Knight is unexposed in Hong Kongand, with Joao Moreira back on board, is respected. However,
low-mileage 3yo TRUE LEGEND backed up his Sha Tin win in April with a verycreditable fourth from a tough draw there last month and might be the answer.Athena posted a much-improved performance on his second start and, from afavourable draw, is next on the list.

VERDICT Me Tsui’s 7yo PRETTY BAUHINIA is not as good as he oncewas but he had a few of today’s rivals behind him when going
close over C&D three weeks ago and will be tough to beat if his revival gathers anymomentum. Party Together and Dragon Commander also made the frame inthat C&D contest and are likely contenders again today, while Invaluable isslipping down the weights and may also feature.

VERDICT His outside draw is not ideal but TREASURE CHEST has beendropped another 2lb since a good effort in defeat at Sha Tin last
month and, with Joao Moreira taking over in the saddle, can gain a breakthrough win.Several of the others warrant consideration but Doctors Delight will appreciatetoday’s drop back into Class 5 and is feared most. Good cases can also be made forCurling Luxury and Happy Hour.

VERDICT Metro Warrior has plenty of scope to build upon his promisingHong Kong debut at Sha Tin ten days ago, while dual C&D winner
Flying Genius has been placed four times in recent months and has a good drawtoday. However, ex-Australian 4yo GREEN AEON has impressed under JoaoMoreira in recent trials and gets the nod on his first official Hong Kong start.

VERDICT We probably haven’t seen the best of low-mileage 3yo Ares buthe may have been stymied by a poor draw today and, for that
reason, preference is for HONEST WAY. David Ferraris’ 5yo has appreciated a dropto this grade in recent weeks and posted a good effort when second here on hislatest outing. Happy Tango went very close off today’s mark three starts ago anddidn’t perform badly on his latest outing, having been denied a clear run in the homestraight.

VERDICT Not much has gone to plan for Momentum Galaxy on his lasttwo outings but Zac Purton has kept the faith and Jimmy Ting’s
4yo will be very dangerous in this grade if/when everything clicks. However, unexposed 3yo SKY DARCI was denied a clear run when fifth after a break at ShaTin last month and could still have significant untapped potential. He gets the vote.Resolute has shown improvement since fitted with blinkers and also gets amention.

VERDICT This looks a decent opportunity for unexposed pair Brave Kingand Wind Glider to claim a first Hong Kong win, the
handicapper looks to have been generous in affording them both a 2lb ease. Theycould prove dangerous from the bottom of the weights but at the other end of thescale Cinquante Cinq has done very little wrong recently and is likely to bethereabouts again. He is respected but a chance is taken on class dropper GREENLUCK who has the assistance of Joao Moreira.

emphatic C&D win but the handicapper has reacted with a 12lb weights rise and thatcould put paid to his chances. Hong Kong Win has been getting better all seasonand scored in the grade over Sha Tin’s straight 5f last time. Hes sets the standard butGOLDEN DASH can put his injury problems behind him and claim a first Class 2victory.
