We’vealsoincludedaStorageLinkthatletsyoueasilyaddgigabytesofstoragespaceontoyournetworkusingreadilyavailableUSB2.0harddrives--orpluginaUSBflashdiskforaconvenientwaytoaccessyourportabledatafiles.Thebuilt-inMediaServerstreamsmusic,video,andphotosfromtheattachedstoragedevicetoanyUPnPcompatiblemediaadapter.AndyoucangettoyourfilesfromanywhereintheworldthroughtheInternet.
TheAccessPointbuiltintotheRouterusesadual-bandversionoftheverylatestwirelessnetworkingtechnology,Wireless-N(draft802.11n).Byoverlayingthesignalsofmultipleradiosforeachband,Wireless-N’s“MultipleIn,MultipleOut”(MIMO)technologymultipliestheeffectivedatarate.Unlikeordinarywirelessnetworkingtechnologiesthatareconfusedbysignalreflections,MIMOactuallyusesthesereflectionstoincreasetherangeandreduce“deadspots”inthewirelesscoveragearea.Therobustsignalstravelfarther,maintainingwirelessconnectionsupto4timesfartherthanstandardWireless-G.
WithWireless-N,thefartherawayyouare,themorespeedadvantageyouget.ItworksgreatwithstandardWireless-G,-A,and-Bequipment,butwhenbothendsofthewirelesslinkareWireless-N,theroutercanincreasethethroughputevenmorebyusingtwiceasmuchradioband,yieldingspeedsupto12timesasfastasstandardWireless-G.Butunlikeotherspeed-enhancedtechnologies,Wireless-Ncandynamicallyenablethisdouble-speedmodeforWireless-Ndevices,whilestillconnectingtootherwirelessdevicesattheirrespectivefastestspeeds.Incongestedareas,the“goodneighbor”modeensuresthattheRouterchecksforotherwirelessdevicesintheareabeforegobblinguptheradioband.
SincetheRoutercanoperateinboththe2.4and5gigahertzradiobandsatthesametime,iteffectivelydoublesyouravailablewirelessbandwidth.Forinstance,youcouldsetupyournetworktohandlevideostreamingononeradioband,andusetheotherbandforsimultaneousdatatransfers--avoidinganyinterferenceorcollisionsthatwoulddegradethevideoperformance.
Tohelpprotectyourdataandprivacy,theRoutercanencodeallwirelesstransmissionswithindustrial-strength256-bitencryption.Itcanserveasyournetwork’sDHCPServer,hasapowerfulSPIfirewalltoprotectyourPCsagainstintrudersandmostknownInternetattacks,andsupportsVPNpass-through.Configurationisasnapwiththewebbrowser-basedconfigurationutility.
TheincrediblespeedofWireless-Nandgigabitwirednetworkingisidealformedia-centricapplicationslikestreamingvideo,gaming,andVoiceoverIPtelephony,andgivesyouplentyofheadroomtorunmultiplemedia-intensedatastreamsthroughthenetworkatthesametime,withnodegradationinperformance.WiththeLinksysWireless-NStorageLinkRouteratthecenterofyourhomeorofficenetwork,youcaneasilyaddstorage,shareahigh-speedInternetconnection,files,printersandmulti-playergames,andrunmedia-intensiveapplicationsatamazingspeeds,withoutthehassleofstringingwires!
