Clowdus: Because I will dedicatemyself to open and ethical governmentthat operates in the sunshine and is fair

to all concerned. I will be accessible andwill listen to my constituents, pre-judg-ing none, and representing all. As themother of six children, including ahomeless three-year-old I took into ourhome, a grandmother of 13, and a for-mer scout troop leader, I understand

what's important to families. As a smallbusiness owner and a former manager ofa manufacturing plant, I understandwhat it means to have to make payrollfor dozens of families, as well as appreci-ating the impact of one business on thelocal economy. As a former environmen-tal reporter who shut down coal minesthat were polluting rivers, I know thepower of one committed voice. As yourcounty commissioner, no one will workharder than I to put a lid on rising taxes,to revitalize our historic neighborhoods,to improve our business climate, to pro-tect our quality of life and to fix ourwaterways! Yes, I believe that one person, one voice, can make a difference!

Heard: I have a 12-year voting recordof which I am very proud. I hope thatvoters weigh my votes and conduct overthe last 12 years to decide whether tochoose me again. The choice betweencandidates in my race could not be moreclear. I represent the public's interest allthe time. My opponent, Barbara Clow-dus, advocates for special interests, every time.

Q: What are the top two issues youwish to see addressed?

Clowdus: What I wish to addresswould be All Aboard Florida and our own

local pollution of our waterways, but Isuspect that overriding those concernswill be the budget, particularly if thesales tax referendum does not pass voterapproval. In that case, the two issues thatwill take priority will be cutting wastefulspending to manage the budget withoutraising property taxes yet again, andaddressing critical infrastructure needs, including inlet dredging.

Heard: The top two issues in MartinCounty are restoring the rivers' healthand protecting our strong comprehen-sive plan because it is the document thatprovides for the quality of life uponwhich we rely here.

Q: If you could, what would be the onething you would change in the countyand why?

Clowdus: Attitudes. The county'smunicipalities, its businesses, and itsresidents deserve to be treated withrespect, fairness and candor, withouthidden agendas, without disdain, andwith an honest desire to listen to theirpoints of view prior to making a deci-sion.

Heard: Our rivers are our lifebloodhere. They truly are the resources that welove most deeply. Clean rivers… that iswhat I would change.

Business owners can save time, moneywith technology company

MARTIN COUNTY — Cloud ChoiceTechnologies was formed to help smallbusinesses operate better. InformationTechnology is a critical part of the fabricof most businesses, but usually over-looked until there is a crisis. The team atCloud Choice is experienced with help-ing a small business owner determinethe right Cloud Services along with localcomputers to optimize his or her busi-ness.

Based in downtown Stuart, CCT has ateam of local technicians along with aU.S. based help desk that can take careof virtually any IT issue that a customerhas. It is like having your own IT person

"on-call" without the expense of a fulltime employee.

Fred King and his wife started CloudChoice this year.

“We are prompt, courteous and tech-nically proficient,” Mr. King said. “Wehave a combination of Cloud Servicesand local IT support to provide a com-prehensive ‘one-stop shop’ for a smallbusiness owner. And we don't act like anIT guy, but a business partner to ourclients.”

Mr. King said that most people don'tpay attention to their business comput-ers and networks until there is a prob-lem.

“Once there is a problem, the fix ismuch more costly than preventativemaintenance,” he said. “One of our cus-

tomers has over 20 computers. Ourmonitoring system detected a harddrive error on a PC - an important PC!We were able to replace the computer'shard drive without losing any data andonly taking about 30 minutes of theuser's day. If the hard drive had crashed,it would have been easily 10 times thatlong. We saved the customer a day'sworth of work, and a lot of aggravation.”

Those with computer issues or whowould like to perform maintenance ontheir computers can call or email CCT.

“We work with small businesses andcan handle one-time service requests aswell as monthly retained services,” Mr.King said.

Google’s photo service (Picasa), all ofhis docs to Google Docs etc., etc., etc. After painstakingly moving all of hisdata to Google’s servers (wherever thehell they are) he woke up one day tofind out his account had been closeddue to a “terms of service violation”which he swears up and down hedidn’t commit.

The bottom line is he spent aconsiderable amount of time movinghis entire digital inventory up toGoogle’s “cloud,” didn’t make anyprovisions to back any of it up and

then (just as Murphy’s law demands)found himself completely locked out.

Now, this column isn’t aboutwhether Google had a right to lockhim out of his account or not nor is itsome type of cry out to the powers thatbe to change the way our data issafeguarded when we hand it over to“the cloud.” It’s more of a cautionarytale to remind us of that which wealready know – back up everything!Even when entrusting your data to thecloud, back it to a local drive as well!To not do so is just asking for it.

OK, let’s look at this a little closershall we? First the decision to use a“cloud” service may be a decision thatmany are not even aware that they are

making. Let me try to clarify a couplethings, take email for example. If youare accessing your email through yourweb browser by going towww.gmail.com, www.yahoo.com,www.aol.com or any of the other emailservices that offer “web based” mailservice then guess what? Your email isbeing stored and managed “in thecloud” and if you should find yourselfin violation of the “terms of service”you too could find yourself locked out.(Just how well did you read those“terms” when you signed up? Youknow, the terms you have to click the“Accept” button for in order to set upyour account?)

Most email services allow thedownloading of email to a local emailclient which is present on each andevery machine out there - Windows,Mac or Linux. You can set up yourcomputer’s email program (WindowsLive Mail, Outlook, Outlook Expressfor Windows, “Mail” on Macs) byconfiguring the “POP” or “IMAP”settings. Look it up in your emailservice’s help settings and if youremail service doesn’t provide for itthen you may want to consider analternative.

Next let’s look at the folly of upload-ing all of your digital pictures to aservice like Google’s Picasa WebAlbums and then deleting the localcopies after you upload all of yourpictures. Why on earth would anyonedo that? “Well Sean, we don’t want allthese “duplicates” now do we?” Well, actually, you do.

Sure uploading all of your photos to

a web based service is great but forGod’s sakes, don’t get rid of theoriginals! Did you know that you canget 8 gigabyte thumb drives from justabout any drugstore nowadays forabout 10 bucks! Do you know howmany “duplicate” photos you can storeon 8 gigs? Then if anything happens toyour “web albums” you luckily willhave all of those pesky duplicates tofall back on.

The list goes on… Google Docs –Sure save all of your Docs to “cloud”storage but how about synchronizingthem with a local folder on your ownmachine, you know, just in caseGoogle goes belly up it will be nice tohave a backup.

As the concept of “cloud computing”becomes all-encompassing it’simportant to remember that it’s yourdata. Don’t just assume that “they” willprotect it for you.

Are we preparing for meritocracy?

Too many parents fail to requiretheir children to do homework. Toomany parents fail to praise their chil-dren for getting good grades, and toofew parents show commitment to theirchildren's education. Another reasonfor the failings of our public schools, however, is lousy preparation of teach-ers by education colleges. A study bythe National Council on Teacher Quali-ty rates teacher training as inadequate. It calls preparation of teachers "anindustry of mediocrity."

A great electric companyRecently we lost our power due to the

weather. I was so impressed with theFPL telephone conversation. After put-ting in my phone number they wereable to tell me exactly what was wrongand approximately how long it wouldtake to restore. And then they asked fora number to reach me for updates, asthey went out to fix the problem. For thenext couple hours, until the electricitywent back on, FPL called periodicallywith a voice message to update theirstatus, apologizing for the inconven-ience. Just wanted to put in a little ravefor a change for our electric company. And another thought; we take advan-tage of the many wonderful things wehave, like electricity. Just be without itfor a while! Not fun! Makes me thinkabout the nations who are not so fortu-nate… like some cities in Guatemala, for instance! I thank God my grandpar-ents came over to the USA many yearsago. We are truly blessed here! Let’s nottake our blessings for granted!

Living our own livesI would like to thank you for your

paper and the information you have

recently put in pertaining to the politi-cians. That has helped me a lot in mak-ing my choice.

And, I guess, my one rant would bethat I find it interesting in Florida thatthey are totally against tobacco; howev-er, they are for legalizing pot. Moreaccidents happen with alcohol, butthere is nothing done about that.

I’m for “to each his own.” If you arenot hurting anybody, I wish the govern-ment would quit trying to live theirlives for them.

Thanks for everythingI would just like to say, “Thanks for

everything.” I’d like to say thanks for myfamily, thanks for my health, thanks formy jobs and my bosses and my co-workers; thanks for the rain, thanks forthe clouds and the sky and thanks thatthe ocean doesn’t swell up and wash usall away and thanks for my car, that getsme to my two part-time jobs.

Thanks for the food on the table, thanks for the cell phones and the Inter-net and thanks for no hurricanes.

Thanks for air-conditioning and icecubes, thanks for food from the marketthat doesn’t kill anyone and thanks forcable companies and televisions, even

though most people say there may be1,400 channels, but there still isn’t muchthat’s interesting enough to watch.

Thanks for the police, the firefighters, the doctors, the nurses and the EMTs,who work long hours to take care of usand watch over us.

Thanks for all the politicians and theirsigns and a bigger thanks if not one ofthem got elected; and thanks for the vet-erans, the young people, the old peopleand everyone in between.

Thanks for reading this.

Spend the tax money hereNo wonder this country is going broke

and bankrupt. All of the working people’stax money is going all over the world, from east to west and to other nations todevelop and make safer places for theirpeople to live. And, if you watch the dailynews, you'll see how dangerous the citiesare getting in this country.

No one from “fed.gov” ever talkedabout the safety of citizens of this coun-try. The State Department is alwaysinterested in safety of other countriesand travel to other countries with thetaxpayers’ money – to stop crime, makelife easier and educate (them) with our

Iran this column about three yearsago and I have received morecomments from car dealers and car

salesman on this one column thanalmost every other. I ran the samecolumn a year ago and the commentskeep coming in from car dealers andcar salesmen. I’m running it again atthe risk of boring some of you and Iapologize in advance, but I think it’simportant because I may be ontosomething.

The more I think about it, the moreI’m convinced that the chronic dislikeand distrust of car buyers for cardealers might be part and parcel of thesame problem that car dealers havewith customers. Think about it…maybeone of the reasons that car dealers treatyou so badly is that they are afraid youare going to take advantage of them! They might be reasoning that they haveto take advantage of you before youhave a chance to get them. _ OK, this isa bit tongue in cheek, but I honestlybelieve there may be an element oftruth to it. Both sides are afraid to showtrust to the other side first. It’s a little bitlike the Israel-Palestine conflict. MaybeI can be the Henry Kissinger negotiat-ing peace between the two sides?

I’m always amazed by the way cardealers who use deceptive advertisingand unethical sales tactics rationalizetheir behavior by actually blaming you, their customer. The following is a directquote from an anonymous car dealer’semail I received this morning inresponse to one of my recent columnsin this newspaper: “I don't think youwould make any of these comments ifyou sold fords in a non-metro market. How do you expect dealers to changewhen consumers think they should payless than dealer cost for a car and thenwalk into any other form of retail storeand pay what they are asking?? Yourideas are noble but there are otherdealers who have tried 'your' methodswho are no longer in business.”

This dealer is saying that his cus-tomers are so ruthless and cunningthat they won’t buy a car unless theycan buy it below his cost and his onlysolution is to trick them into thinkingthat they are buying it below his cost, like tacking on a “dealer fee” to theprice they quoted the customer. Healso goes on to say that my “ideas arenoble,” but I can’t possibly be success-ful and I will go broke trying. I trulyappreciate his concern and I want to

assure him, if he is reading this articlethat my business is doing very nicely.

This attitude is actually a prevailingpart of the culture in many car dealer-ships. Many dealers, dealer managers, and sales people don’t trust theircustomers (how paradoxical!). Theydon’t even like their customers. A verycommon expression among cardealers and their sales staff is “Buyersare liars.” This means that a prospec-tive customer will not tell you the truthabout the condition of his trade-in, hewill lie to you about the price he gotfrom your competitor, and he is likelyto remove those new tires that were onhis trade-in when the dealer appraisedit when he comes in to pick up his newcar.

There are also a lot of dealershipswhere used car buyers and people withbad credit are held in especially lowesteem. They have nicknames forpeople with bad credit like “slugs” and“roaches”. Apparently dehumanizingthese unfortunate members of oursociety with derogatory labels makes iteasier to treat them so shabbily. Peoplewith bad credit are targeted with directmail and newspaper ads makingabsurd promises that convinceprospective customers that they canfinance a car no matter how bad theircredit. In some dealerships applicantsare coached on how to falsify creditapplication and pay records. In somecases the applicant may not even knowhe is signing a false credit applicationwhich is federal offence. In most cases

the credit is refused and the applicantsare not even given the courtesy of areturn phone call to tell them this.

I don’t claim to be a psychologist(and I don’t even play one on TV), but Ihave read articles explaining howhumans will stereotype other people ina fashion that falsely justifies theirnegative behavior toward those samepeople. We see this with racism andeven in wars. If you make yourselfbelieve that car buyers are out to takeadvantage of you, “buyers are liars”,you can’t feel guilty about trickingthem into paying a dealer fee. If youtrick a “roach” or a “slug” into comingin to buy a car on credit when theyprobably can’t, why should you feelguilty? After all, roaches and slugs don’thave feelings.

What these kinds of dealershipsdon’t understand is that you must trusta person first before you can expect herto trust you. You have to treat a personwith respect before you can expect thatperson to respect you. Somebody hasgot to go first. My experience over thepast 40-plus years as a car dealer is that99.9 percent of my customers are goodpeople who I can believe and trust. Those are pretty good odds and I justassume that every customer I amdealing with is part of that 99.9 per-cent. Once in a great while I getburned, but the loss from that one in athousand that takes advantage is farout-weighted by the other 999 whorespond positively to my trusting themand treating them with respect.

Theamendment would apply only to Flori-da law and would not authorize viola-tions of federal law or any non-medicaluse, possession or production of mari-juana, according to the Florida Depart-ment of State, Division of Elections.

The second proposed amendmentfunds the Land Acquisition Trust Fundto acquire, restore, improve and man-age conservation lands, including wet-lands and forests; fish and wildlife habi-tat; lands protecting water resourcesand drinking water sources. It wouldinclude the Everglades and apply towater quality of rivers, lakes andstreams as well as beaches, shores, out-door recreational lands working farmsand ranches and historic or geologicsites.

Funding would be accomplished bydedicating 33 percent of net revenuesfrom the existing excise tax on docu-ments — the tax paid for 20 years, according to the division.

Controlling snakes and hurricane tipsIthink one of the most feared and less

known about creature in our gardensand yards is a slinky creature known

as a snake. Most common garden snakesare not poisonous and are actuallybeneficial to your yard or garden. Somepeople actually find them as welcomevisitors as they help control bugs androdents.

However, most people have a naturalfear of snakes and would prefer they setup house elsewhere. There is no actualrepellent that I know of that really workshowever there are steps you can take tomake your garden less inviting to them. One thing snakes love to do is to sunthemselves. Since they are cold-bloodedreptiles, you will often see them curledup on stones in your garden trying tocatch a few rays. Removing the stones, especially if they are in a sunny place, may help to discourage them fromhanging around. Snakes also love to hidein cool damp places like cinder blocksand stonewalls. This type of scenariomay help be an attractant to yourgarden. They also will be attracted bysaucers or pots that are not being usedespecially if they have water in them. Ihave also heard of snakes hiding ingopher tunnels so removing them fromyour yard may help deter them. Remem-ber, most snakes are your friends andthey usually will try to stay as far awayfrom you as possible. Sometimes, however, an unexpected encounter canbe inevitable.

With the tropics reaching the peakseason, please remember to check youryard for hidden dangers and to be sure to

review your plans on how to besthurricane proof your yard. One point toconsider when checking your property isto look for areas that are known floodplains in your yard. If you have such anarea and a large tree happens to reside inthe middle of the flood plain, it has a riskof toppling. When the ground around atree becomes saturated with moisture, the area around the tree will becomevery unstable. This instability coupledwith the high winds of a tropical systemcan cause even a normally stable tree totopple. This inspection is especially

important if the tree resides next to astructure. In this case, properly pruningyour tree may not only save your tree, but it might also save your home fromthe damage of a downed tree. Also beaware of any diseased or decaying treesas these can also cause a hazard.

The next step you should take is totake a tour of your yard and make a list ofitems that would be dangerous to leavelying around. This list should includepatio furniture, loose garden ornaments, small potted plants, yard torches, arborsand even your gas grill. If you have a shedor gazebo, you might want to add extratie downs to be sure they stay put anddon’t wind up in Kansas. You can startearly by limiting what you keep out inyour yard during the peak months ofAugust and September.

If you own a swimming pool, you canthrow all your patio furniture into the

pool to help keep it from traveling acrossthe state.

If you are a nature lover, most likelyyou have a bird feeder hanging in youryard. Now is the time to do somehousekeeping so your feathered friendshave a safe and clean place to eat. Cleanyour bird feeder with a mixture of 1 partbleach to 9 parts water. Be sure toremove all droppings from the perchesand throw away any old food that mightbe moldy and refill it with fresh treats. Besure to rinse the feeder well after treatingit with the bleach solution. This willensure your birds will have a disease freeenvironment in which to dine.

MARTIN COUNTY — The public is invited tolearn more about the benefits of breastfeedingduring a free community program, sponsored byWomen, Infants and Children and Nutrition Ser-vices in collaboration with the Florida Depart-ment of Health in Martin County on Friday, Aug.29 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Children’s ServicesCouncil, 101 S.E. Central Parkway, Stuart.

Martin County is currently ranked No. 1 in the

state for the percentage of infants who are cur-rently breastfed. Research shows that babies thatreceive only breast milk for the first six months oflife are less likely to develop a wide range ofchronic and acute diseases including ear infec-tions, diarrheal diseases, asthma, obesity and res-piratory illnesses. They are also less likely to diefrom Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In addition, breastfeeding for nine months reduces a baby'sodds of being overweight by 30 percent.

deck with stage area and bar leavepatrons with a gorgeous setting anda breeze that accentuates the usual-ly perfect Florida weather.

If the view and setting isn'tenough, the food served at Wahoo'sis phenomenal. The restaurantboasts fresh seafood and a quirkymenu that is sure to make everyonesmile.

When my guest and I arrived atWahoo's, we were greeted by afriendly staff that made sure everyaspect of our visit was enjoyable.

We were seated next to an openwindow, with full view of the river, the boats and the breeze.

Our server suggested we try theirfamous Maryland Crab Balls as anappetizer. The golf-sized delightswere big enough to be eaten with aknife and fork. They were full ofherbs and spices, lumps of incredi-ble crab meat and cheese and friedto perfection. They were servedwith a remoulade dipping saucethat combines perfectly with thetasty treat.

As soon as we finished the crabballs, we tried the Wahoo's wings. They can be made with buffalosauce, parmesan garlic or with afireworks sauce. They are served ina tin bucket, which adds a decora-tive flair to the delicious wings.

For our main course, my guest, aself-proclaimed burger connois-seur, tried a bacon cheeseburgerwith French fries. The juicy burgercomes topped with a choice ofcheeses and lettuce, tomato andonions with a pickle spear on the

side. Not only was this an appealingburger on the plate, it was perfectto the palate.

I chose the blackened Mahi sand-wich with onion rings. The largeportion of fish was served on aKaiser roll with tartar sauce, let-tuce, tomatoes and onions. The fishwas fresh and seasoned perfectly. Iwould definitely have this againduring another trip to Wahoo's.

As we were relaxing after ourmeal, our server brought out twopieces of pina colada cake. Themoist, yellow cake had a pineapplefilling and was iced with a whitefrosting with coconut shavings. Itwas the perfect ending to a deli-cious meal.

Wahoo's Riverhouse Restauranthas daily lunch and dinner specials,a happy hour and live entertain-ment on the weekends. They alsohave a Sunday brunch special thatfeatures a bloody Mary bar andfood specials.

TREASURE COAST — It’s hard tobelieve that Labor Day is just around thecorner and that means lots of picnics, celebrations and boaters as everyonewants to enjoy the last holiday of sum-mer.

Holidays always bring out the usualboaters along with lots of new boatersand those that only go out a few times ayear. A little common sense and prepa-ration can make your holiday on thewater a fun adventure. Here are a fewcommon sense tips to help get youready for that enjoyable weekend.

Prior to the holiday:1. Make sure all batteries are in good

working condition and fully charged. 2. Gas up the boat. 3. Start your motor before you leave

the house.

4. Stow as much gear in the boatbefore leaving the house.

5. Check the trailer early enough tohave the time to repair lights, tires, etc.

At the ramp:1. Get your boat ready BEFORE

pulling into the launch area. (All equip-ment on board – tie off lines ready)

2. Back in - launch the boat - move theboat out of the ramp area - get parkedand back to the boat.

3. Move out of the launch area quicklyif you are waiting on others or gettingthings stowed..

4. If you have problems, get out of theramp area. Don’t tie up others becauseyour problems at the ramp.

On the water:1. Know the rules of the road and use

common sense and courtesy. 2. Don’t be aggressive on the water.

Allow plenty of room to other boats andslow down around heavy boat traffic.

3. Remember, your wake affects oth-ers. Again, common sense and courtesyis the key.

4. Obey the laws! The signs are therefor a reason, so just follow the rules andeveryone will have an enjoyable day.

5. Don’t drink and drive! Have anexperienced boater to be the designateddriver for that day.

6. Courtesy goes a long, long way!!Back at the ramp:1. Don’t tie up a ramp while you get

your vehicle. Most likely, someone isalready getting their trailer and shouldhave first rights to pulling their boat out.

2. Patience is a virtue….someone

once said. Don’t be in a hurry. You willget your boat out, just wait your turn.

3. Pull well away of the ramp areawhen securing your boat and gear. Allowothers the courtesy of pulling their boatstimely.

4. Make sure everything is secure for asafe trip home from a wonderful Holi-day weekend on the water!

Check with your local Coast GuardAuxiliary and take a safe boating courseif you haven’t already, it will open youreyes to safe boating. Have a safe and funLabor Day weekend!

The surf has been perfect. Fishearly in the day for tarpon andsnook, they like the coolest

temperatures of the day and low light.Casting Crystal minnows or a smalllive bait will get the attention you arelooking for. Remember, slow retrieveworks best.

Now, for those looking to takesomething home to eat, there areplenty of whiting and croaker on apiece of shrimp. These fish are upclose, so pitch, don’t cast and you willbe there. They are excellent table fare.

River temperatures are very warm. So, you will need to fish the coolestpart of the day, like when the suncomes up. There are lots of big trout in

Herman's Bay. Keep in mind you canonly keep one fish over 20-inches.Those big fish make for a great photobut for dinner, the 15’’ trout is the oneto keep. Use top water, soft rubberbaits and small jigs. They have all beenkeeping the fish active. After sun up,use live bait, shrimp and small baitfishin the shadowed areas. Tarpon andsnook are aplenty at the inlets, bridges

or cuts with moving water. Again, lowlight and sharp hooks are mandatory. There are lots of big fish this time ofyear, so leave the bass rods at home.

Offshore the bottom bite has beengreat all summer. Plenty of snapper, lanes, mangroves and muttons areswimming our waters. Small live baitsor chunks of sardines will get youquite the dinner. There are lots oftriggerfish, sea bass, porgies andsharks thrown in the mix as well.

For the anglers out dolphin fishing,150-feet has been your zone. Yes we’ve

heard about fish from 400-feet, but150-feet has been a good place to start.Look for the kings from 60- 80- feetalong with a few sails being caughtfrom the same area.

Always remember the pitch rod, asthe cobia are still making a showingtoo. It’s that time of year, fish fast andfish early, those afternoon storms popup in a hurry.

Don’t forget about yoursunglasses while golfingThere are two things that are often

overlooked in our game. Theimportance of being custom fit

and the need to be able to judge thelay of the land.

Having clubs, shoes and even golfballs that “fit” your game is necessaryif you want to play your best. Beingable to judge distances, increase depthperception, and the ability to noticeeven the slightest contours on thecourse, and most importantly, on thegreens, is all too often overlooked.

Now, thanks to Oakley (www.oak-ley.com), golfers have the opportunityto put these two important thingstogether.

Nearly all of us use sunglasses on adaily basis. We use them when driving,or walking, or just outside, but haveyou considered the benefits of wearingthem while playing golf?

Today’s sunglasses perform twotasks. First they protect our delicateeyes from the sun’s damaging rays.Second, with golf-specific lenses, theywill accentuate the contours andshapes on the fairways and greens, aswell as assist you in following the ballwhile it's in flight.

One misconception that manypeople have is that sunglasses arepretty much all the same. Some ask,“Why pay a lot for sunglasses. Don'tthey all just block out sunlight?”

Unfortunately, this is not the case.Inexpensive sunglasses actually domore harm than good when it comesto your eyes. Cheap sunglasses areusually nothing more than dark lenseson cheap frames. These dark lensescause your pupils to open furtherallowing harmful UV light in todamage your lens, retina and cornea. They also aren’t coated to preventthose rays from getting through andmay damage your eyes just when youthink they are protecting them. Betterglasses feature better optics, meaningless distortion so your eyes can focussharply on what you are seeing.

A few weeks ago I was invited toexperience a custom fitting at theOakley Store (561-361-7177) in TownCenter at Boca Raton. The store'smanager, Kat Centeno, greeted me as Iarrived after work one evening.

The Oakley Store features not only ahuge selection of eyewear, but appar-el, shoes, backpacks, and more. I hadno idea how diverse this company is.

After a tour of the store, Kat went towork on fitting me with just the rightpair of sunglasses. Not only must theglasses perform well, but they mustlook good on me, fit my face shape, and have lenses that do not interferewith me seeing the golf ball as Iaddress it. To top it off, I had a ton ofcolors and other options to choosefrom.

After trying on several pair, I settledon the new Radar Lock frame. Besideslooking really good on me, there aretwo features on these that I have beenlooking for. First, the lenses comedown far enough that there isn't a linejust below my eye that interferes withme seeing the golf ball when I'm goingto hit it. Second, this frame allows meto easily switch lenses, going from aneveryday lens to Oakley's G30 golf lensin a matter or seconds.

Once I decided on the frame, Katshowed me all the color choices I had.I wasn't stuck with just black ortortoise! This is where the truly“custom” aspect comes into play. I had15 frame colors to select from. Then Ipicked the side band color from adozen choices. The ear socks werenext and even the Oakley logo. In all, there are about 10,000 combinations.

Lastly were the lenses. Obviously, Itook the G30 Iridium Polarized golflens. My second lens was the RedIridium Polarized driving lens.

Of course, all of this is moot if theglasses do not perform. I've spent thepast month or so putting my Oakleysthrough the paces on the course andon the road.

My Radar Locks are a true piece ofequipment. They are as important tomy golf game now as my putter or

sand wedge. The G30 lens doeseverything it advertises. I am betterable to read the greens, noticing subtlecontours and even the grain of thegrass, helping me sink more putts. Iam also able to better follow my ball inthe air and judge distance moreaccurately. The ear socks and nosepiece grip my skin and prevent themfrom slipping no matter how much I

sweat. In all, having a pair of custom

sunglasses, designed to help my golfgame and protect my eyes, is some-thing everyone should consider. Nowif they'd only make a lens that finds aball in a thick patch of palmettos ordeep in the woods.
