� is one has been immaculately renovated so that it still respects the streetscape but has every modern convenience and smart design feature, adding up to a luxurious combination of period and contemporary.

Let’s start with the facade: red brick, yes. Stucco and fretwork trim. Of course. But rather than going down the same old beige path, the stucco and fretwork are painted varying shades of grey. � e tessellated-tiled front verandah – in true Edwardian style – is asymmetrical. Leadlight glass panels in the front door and the windows are in the green and red curvilinear designs so loved by the Edwardians.

Prahran company Vogue Domain Living, which has renovated a swag of properties from Brighton and Beaumaris to Kew and Toorak, was the team behind this high-end project.

Dark Edwardian interiors have been replaced by brilliant light-� lled spaces in predominantly white and neutral tones. But they are never predictable or boring.

� e front room o� the entry hall retains its bay window with coloured leadlight panels and has a white marble mantelpiece above the open � replace. By removing the wall on either side of the � replace, the room has been opened up to the dining room to make one large space where people can move easily between the two rooms. Floors in this formal front part of the house are made from wide oak � oorboards. Still at the front, the opulent main bedroom has the required walk-in wardrobe. � e lavish en suite is not merely functional but also elegant, with limestone tiles from � oor to ceiling and an oversized frameless glass shower.

Continuing to the end of the hall, steps lead down to the informal part of the house. Polished concrete � oors, high ceilings and a bank of frameless glass café-style doors accentuate the bold proportions. � e kitchen, which occupies a corner section of this vast space, is sleek so that nothing stands out and ruins the streamlined look, but it includes every type of high-tech kitchen appliance, from integrated fridge and freezer to Miele ovens. � e oversized limestone-topped island bench, lit by three pendant lights, is more than a metre wide and makes a great place to prop with co� ee or pre-dinner drinks. On the far wall, a long window forms part of the splashback. It not only allows natural light to � lter inside but also gives the cook a view of the garden. � e dining area near the kitchen is framed by windows,

It has limestone tiles on the walls and � oors, a cantilevered bench, frameless glass shower and bath.

With its long list of features, generous accommodation and open-plan living, this is a great example of a successful renovation of an Edwardian house for a modern family. \

Malvern is one of Melbourne’s wealthiest suburbs. Grace Street is part of the Stanhope Estate, which includes some of Stonnington most substantial Victorian-era mansions and rows of boom-style houses. Other famous estates that make up this ritzy suburb are the Stonnington Estate, named after the historic mansion that was once the governor’s home, teachers’ college and part of Deakin University. Today it is again in private ownership. Then there is the Gascoigne Estate in the eastern part of the suburb, which includes the streets around Central Park.

The Malvern Hotel, on the corner of Glenferrie and Malvern roads, originally known as the Malvern Hill Hotel, is the oldest hotel in the suburb. It was built in 1853 for barrister and land developer Charles G.B. Skinner to attract buyers to his planned development. The present two-storey brick building was built in front of the original weatherboard building and stables in 1861.

Malvern has everything from a municipal band to the Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Centre, named after the local member and prime minister who disappeared at Cheviot Beach off Portsea in 1967. The Malvern Gardens and Malvern Valley Golf Course are prime open spaces, but for urban chic you can’t go past the Glenferrie Road shopping strip and Malvern Central Shopping Centre. From cafés to clothes, butchers and bakeries, there is something to suit everyone.

KEW EASTAward-winning architects Six Degrees has turned this suburban house into a super-chic residence big on style and comfort. The house, in one of Kew East’s best streets, is a stunning example of how architects can transform houses and lives. Both are bedrooms, and although the second is now used for a child, it has been designed to � t a queen-sized bed between the custom-made cabinets. Features such as this make this house stand out. High-gloss timber � oors and a long, open shelving unit down the length of the hall are more innovative ideas that are practical and stylish. The bathroom, off the hall, leads to a laundry. The open-plan kitchen and living area are real stunners.

High-gloss cabinets and a bench along one wall continues outside to the built-in barbecue. The island bench is cantilevered to allow comfortable seating around it. A step up to the living zone creates a neat distinction between meals and living areas. In another design highlight, the study – with built-in desk and storage – is tucked away behind a bank of tall kitchen cabinets.
