Illegal cigarettes with a street value of R1million were seized when police bustedtwo foreign nationals in Brackenfell on
Wednesday last week.“Members from the Cape Town Dog Unit
responded to information on a safari tourtruck that had crossed the border from Zim-babwe into South Africa the previous dayand was en route to Brackenfell industria,”said Brackenfell police station spokesper-son Warrant Officer Erica Crous. It was initially suspected that an endange-
red species were in transport.Members arrived at the warehouse in Sil-
ver Park Okavango Industria at about 20:30,
where they found the truck and two men.“Upon thoroughly searching the truck
they found a false compartment between thefloor and luggage storage area. This stret-ched from the back to the front of the truckand was filled with cartons of illicit and ille-gal cigarettes. A toilet in the warehouse alsocontained numerous boxes filled with car-tons of illegal cigarettes,” said Crous. The two suspects, a Zimbabweanman and
aJordaniannationalwere arrested and 4 600cartons of illegal cigarettes seized.According to Francois van der Merwe,
CEOof theTobacco Institute of SouthernAf-rica (TISA), the Pacific brand of cigarette –whichwas confiscated in this case– ismanu-factured in Zimbabwe andwidely sold in Ca-pe Town, but is not necessarily illegal.
“Pacific is legally imported and traded inSouth Africa, but there has been instanceswhere it was smuggled into the country andsold illegally,” he said.“Historically, illicit cigarettes have been
smuggled into South Africa from neighbou-ring countries such as Botswana, Swazi-land, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, as well as Chi-na and the United Arab Emirates.Currently, the majority, approximately
55%, of illicit cigarettes are produced anddistributed by manufacturers within SouthAfrica,” he said.TISAdefines illicit trade as the supply and
sale of smuggled or counterfeit tobacco pro-ducts, on which the necessary duties andtaxes have not been paid.

“To avoid the payment of cigarette excisetaxes, which are currently R12.42 on a packof 20 cigarettes, some manufacturers do notdeclare total production. They only paytaxes on a certain portion of their producti-on,” says van der Merwe. He says the main external sources at the
moment are manufacturers in Zimbabwe(approx 30%) and Botswana (approx 5%),who utilise complex illegal supply chainsand concealment methods.“These products enter through porous
borders with both Zimbabwe and Botswa-na,” he says.According to data compiled by TISA,
South Africa is rated amongst the top fivecountries globally with the highest inciden-ce of trade in illegal cigarettes.“In 2013, an estimated 31% of all cigarettes
consumed in South Africa were illicit. Thisequals one million packs of 20 smoked perday. In 2014 and 2015 this number wasaround 23%. It destabilisesmarkets throughthe undermining of legitimate distributersand retailers and undermines brand equi-ty,” he saysIn terms of impact on the fiscus, more than
R22billion in tax revenuehasbeen lost to the illicit cigaret-te trade since 2010.More worrisome, it expo-
ses consumers to unregula-ted products and packagingwith inappropriate healthwarnings and dubious tarand nicotine disclosures. It also encourages crimina-
lity as it is often a front forother illicit activities such ashuman trafficking and drugsmuggling. It also funds orga-nised crime and terrorism inother parts of Africa. At an anti-illicit trade con-
ference held in Cape Town inNovember last year, police commissionerRiah Phiyega warned consumers not to buythese cigarettes.“Illicit trading creates an environment for
organised crime, which has a negative im-pact on the economy. Organised crimeknows no borders, has no regard for the lawand the criminals involved havemassive re-sources and networks they have developed
in pursuit of their objectives.”She urged members of the public to work
with police to combat the illicit trade of to-bacco.TISA provides the following advice on
identifying an illegal pack of cigarettes.. Paying less than R18 for a pack of 20s
should raise suspicion as to whether the ne-cessary taxes have been paid by the manu-
facturer or importer. On exciseduty alone, as of 25 Februarythis year, on a pack of 20s isR12.42.
.There is no excise stamp (di-amond stamp <SA>) on thepack.
. There are no health war-nings on the pack.
. The quit line number is in-correct ormissing: (011) 720 3145or +27 (11) 720 3145 or +27 (0) 11720 3145
. The tar and nicotine rea-dings on the pack are higherthan 12mg tar and 1,2mg nicoti-ne, or not printed on one of thelong sides of the pack.
. The words “Reduced Ignition Propensi-ty” are not printed anywhere on the pack.Be on the lookout. Notice what people are
selling, what their cigarettes look like andfor how much they are being sold. Reportany suspicious activities or products to theTobacco Institute hotline on 0800 214 710 orthe SARS Fraud and Anti-Corruption hotli-ne on 0800 00 28 70.
The cigarettes were stacked in a hidden compartment of a safari truck.

nie-gestremde maatjies kon baljaar.
Dié stigting staan gesinnemet gestremdekinders by.

In the little over four months since takingoffice, the new Brackenfell CommunityPolicing Forum (CPF) executive commit-
tee has moved mountains, but now needsthe local business sector to assist.
Chairman Sean McCleland says exponen-tial development in the region has resultedin an influx of residents and businesses, butalso an increase in crime.
“More people are moving to the northernsuburbs thanks to the more competitiveproperty prices. The local economy is there-fore growing and wealth is shifting,” hesays.
However, these are all factors that con-tribute to an increase in crime.
In an effort to effectively buffer increaserates of crime, the CPF has for the first timemanaged to bring all 12 local neighbourhoodwatches under one umbrella.
“This cooperation was necessary,” hesays.
UniformityA standard operating procedure was
drawn up to ensure uniformity across theneighbourhood watches and two forumswere introduced.
“All the neighbourhood watches are reg-istered to Bolobook and sign in to Zello radioservices,” he says.
The term “Bolo” is the internationally ac-cepted abbreviation for “Be on the Look-out”.
“This unique online network gives securi-ty organisations, groups and its membersthe opportunity to interact via social mediato report incidents, warn others, place
alerts and generally be on the lookout,” heexplains.
Weekly crime trends can also be analysedso that preventative measures can be put inplace.
In turn, Zello provides back-up to allneighbourhood watch patrollers.
“In essence this is a free ‘walkie talkie’app that links you with a 24-hour controlroom, which in turn is linked up to everystate department countrywide,” explainsMcCleland.
Increased attendanceThe local arm is called Brackenfell Con-
cerned Citizens.The above-mentioned developments,
have led to an increase in the number of peo-ple attending monthly CPF meetings.
“At our first public meeting in February,we had 12 members of the public in attend-ance, while more than a 100 people showedup at our meeting in June.”
McCleland says the CPF is now in theprocess of aligning itself with local businessto strengthen its functions.
“Much remains to be done. We desperate-ly need our own control room in Brackenfellfor instance, but to do this, funding is need-ed via local business,” he says.
He describes the association between theCPF and local business as a mutually benefi-cial relationship.
“From a security standpoint, everyone intown benefits – residents and business. Wewelcome any citizen or business that wantsto participate in creating a better Bracken-fell for everyone.”V The next CPF public meeting will take place on19 August at the Gene Louw Traffic College, For moreinformation see the Brackenfell CPF Facebook page.

Street children at winter camp out
The kids enjoyed several games during their stay.
MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb
A socialwelfare organisation showed itscompassion for children when it ar-ranged a winter camp for mostly ho-
meless kids last week.Hewlin Compassion’s Hewitt de Jager,
told TygerBurger more about the campwhich was held from 14 to 17 July and inclu-ded teenagers from Durbanville, Kraaifon-tein, Brackenfell, Athlone and Delft.
“We’ve worked with homeless people inthe northern suburbs for the past three ye-ars. Among them are children – under 18,”said Hewitt.
“So we decided to take 30 of them on thiscamp.”
Hewitt said the camp’s theme was “Cross-roads:What to dowhenyoudon’t knowwhatto do.”
The campwas held at the Princessvlei EcoAdventure Centre in Diep River.
“Our facilitators consisted of social wor-kers, community leaders and pastors,” hesaid.
Hewitt said their programmes ranged
from life skills sessions to self-worth, creati-vity, teamwork, problem-solving and decisi-on-making, among others.
Among the various activities the childrenenjoyed were playing tag, building a bonfireand sharing their experiences during thegroup sessions.
“The kids had three meals per day, loadsof snacks in between, and lots of games toplay with. They each got two blankets anda sleeping bag, each had their own bed andown bag of toiletries with a face cloth andtowel,” he said.
Hewlin Compassion serves as a memberon the board of the Western Cape StreetsChildren’s Forum. The forum will be part-nering with them during their annual“Amazing GRace” event on 10 October, incelebration of World Homeless Day, Hewittsaid.
“It is where community members enterthe race and travel between organisations –orphanages, shelters, old age homes, and soforth – and render a service at eachorganisa-tion.”V Contact Hewitt on 073 135 8541 or [email protected] to assist the children in anyway.

the Chipboard Cafe in the industrial areawhen twomen entered the premises just af-ter opening time. The factory is in Cecil Morgan Road near
the R300 highway and Bottelary Road andis not known for armed robberies. So says Edrich Engelbrecht, one of the
company directors.“This is the first time I hear of such a rob-
bery in this area. With the economy beingwhat it is, people come to look for jobs allthe time. There was nothing strange aboutit,” said Engelbrecht.“These guys knewmost of the staff would
not be there yet.”Engelbrecht said his colleague, Johan
Oosthuizen, usually opens the factory.
“I wasn’t there. Johan had just opened upand the machines were switched on towarm up, when two guys appeared,” hesaid. The two asked if therewere any jobs avai-
lable and Johan told them go around to thefront. He and a salesman as well as five fac-tory workers were there at the time, saidEngelbrecht.“Then they pulled out the rifles. They
took laptops, cellphones, watches, that sortof thing. They also had the safe opened andtook whatever was inside.”The robbers fled.“They didn’t have time to consider taking
the guys’ wallets too.”The police and emergency services per-
sonnel arrived a short while later and trau-ma counselling was offered to the workersinvolved, with the two injured employeesbeing taken away for treatment.

“A big ‘thump!’,” is what Gerald deBruyn heard when a car hit ahawk on Sunday.
He saw the entire incident, from whenthe VW Golf hit the low-flying bird, to thewindscreen wiper coming off, to the ownerstopping, picking up the wiper blade andspeeding off again, swearing.De Bruyn very gently took the bird out,
its nostrils still covered in dried blood andits one eye bloody and swollen shut, to showTygerBurger. He had built the bird amakeshift bed and
soft shelter in a contraption resembling atrolley, but not quite. From themiddle of the resident milk cra-
te, DeBruyn, who is homeless, took the birdout.“He was much wilder yesterday when I
found him,” he explained as the bird, withits feet loosely tied, snapped at his hands.“If I could have the opportunity to name
it, I’d call it Pure White. Not because it’swhite, but because it is innocent,” he said.“That driver of the Golf had no idea what
kind of bird he hit. It is a hawk. You don’tjust hit a hawk and drive off. I saw it andimmediately scooped it up,” said De Bruyn.De Bruyn brought the bird to the shop in
Bellville’s CBD on Monday where he nor-mally goes to sell bric-a-brac given to himby residents. Not surewhat to do, the owner of the shop
in Kort Street, Steven Erasmus, proceededto call TygerBurger in an effort to find outwho best to contact. The bird had a tag from the University
of Cape Town (UCT) tied around its foot.Professor PeterRyan ofUCT’s PercyFitz-
patrick Institute of African Ornithologytold TygerBurger the bird might belong toSafring, a national bird-ringing unit thattracks birds’ movements and survival on anational database.“It ismost likely a black sparrowhawk or
a peregrine (falcon),” he said at the time.“But it is definitely not my bird.”TygerBurger alerted theCape ofGoodHo-
pe SPCAwhich in turn arranged for a near-by emergency vehicle to fetch the bird. The driver, Farrent Dlula, was at a near-
by branch of the Tygerberg Animal Hospi-tal and made his way to the CBD to collectthe animal.“The case will be referred to our wildlife
department and taken to Grassy Park,” hesaid.V Have you rescued a wild animals lately? What didyou do with it? Let TygerBurger know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.

When winter weather hits, a bad hair day canlast an entire season. Here are a couple of tips to help you main-
tain healthy, beautiful hair this winter.1. Wear a hat when you go out as it keeps
your hair covered from the wind, rain andsnow. But as we all know, no woman wantsthe “dreaded hat hair.” A great way to avoidthis is to wrap your hair in a silk scarf beforeputting on your wool beanie. This helps pre-vent damage caused by the hat rubbingagainst your hair and cuts down on the static.2. Treat your hair to deep conditioning tre-
atment once a week. This replenish the mois-ture deplected by dry heat in your house andthe cold winter air.3. Washing your hair too often will cause it
to dry out. Always make sure you dry yourhair before leaving the house. The moisturein your hair combined with the cold air, willadd further damage to your hair by makingit more brittle and dry.

When buying eyeglasses, the frameyou choose is important for appea-rance and comfort, but the lenses
you choose influence appearance, comfort, vision and safety, says Brackenfell optome-trist Nadia Steenberg. She recommends taking time to consider
the choice of lens material, design and coa-tings.
Lens materials – features and benefits. Glass lenses: All lenses used to bemade
of glass. They are heavy and can break easi-ly, potentially causing serious harm to theeye. Glass lenses are no longer widely used.
. Plastic lenses: Because of its lightweight (about half that of glass), low costand excellent optical qualities, plastic re-mains a popular material today.
. Polycarbonate lenses: polycarbonate islighter and significantlymore impact-resis-tant than standard plastic, making it a pre-ferredmaterial for children’s eyewear, safe-ty glasses and sports eyewear.
. High-index plastic lenses: These lensesare thinner and lighter than standard plas-tic lenses because they have a higher indexof refraction andmay also have a lower spe-cific gravity. They are ideal for higher pre-scriptions (weaker eyes).
Lens treatmentsFor the most comfortable, durable and
best-looking glasses, the following lens tre-atments should be considered essential:
. Anti-scratch coating: Most of today’smodern anti-scratch coatings can make yo-ur spectacle lenses nearly as scratch-resis-tant as glass. But if you’rehard onyour glas-ses oryou’rebuying foryourkids, askabouta warranty against scratches.
. Anti-reflective (AR) coating: An AR co-ating eliminates reflections in lenses, espe-cially at night. They also make your lensesnearly invisible, so you canmake better eyecontact.Anti-reflective coating is especiallyimportant if you choose high-index lenses.
. Photochromic treatment: This lens tre-atment enables spectacle lenses to darkenautomatically in response to the sun’s UV
and high-energy visible (HEV) light rays.
Bifocal or multifocalThe type of vision problem you have de-
termines the shape of the lens. Generally, before the age of 40 one power in a lens isall that is needed.
.Bifocals: The lens is split into theupperpart is for distancevisionand the lowerpartfor near vision. They are usually prescribedfor people over 40 whose focusing abilityhas declined due to presbyopia. which af-fects the natural lens in the eye. Bifocals arenot ideal if you use a computer.
. Multi-focal lenses: Instead of havingjust two or three lens powers like bifocalsor trifocals, progressive lenses are true“multifocal” lenses that provide a seamlessprogression of many lens powers for all vie-wing distances, allowing you to see clearlythrough near, middle and far distances. For detailed expert advice about your
spectacle lenses, contact Nadia SteenbergOptometrist on 021 982 4238. The’re situatedat the entrance at Boulevard Square in Pro-tea Heights (at the small Checkers).

Two youth drama groups from Wallaced-ene have made the final cut in the re-cent High School Drama Mini Festival,
presented by Artscape.Abomlambo Youth Development and As-
quared Theatre Company, along with Brack-enfell High School’s theatre department, were among the top 16 finalists.
The festival saw 60 Western Cape schoolscompeting.
With their play Ons is oor dit!/We’re overit!, the young Brackenfellers communicatedthey’ve moved beyond apartheid.
Abomlambo portrayed the makings of Be-trayal and Asquared explored the topic Jeal-ousy vs Alcohol.
Marlene Le Roux, director of Artscape Au-
dience Development and Education, says thefestival is a starting point for youth to re-shape conceptions and attitudes people haveof each other as Africans.
“The arts have a central role to play in na-tion building and social cohesion, which iswhy this festival is a catalyst for young peo-ple to express themselves creatively. It of-fers a platform to engage with each otheracross cultural barriers, language and geog-raphy and to build an understanding of theenvironment they live in,” says Le Roux.
The main festival will take place between17 and 22 August, where the finalists willcompete. The winners will be announced ata gala evening on 22 August.
Le Roux said the benefits of participatingin the competition are numerous and on-go-ing.
“Schools become hubs of sustainable
learning as they are given a platform tovoice their own creativity, views and con-cerns to a captive audience, while they alsoget an opportunity to broaden their horizonsby experiencing the magic of live theatre, lights, sound and an audience,” she says.
“It will also enable them to obtain theatrediscipline and etiquette.”
This year’s competition will be adjudicat-ed by Johann van der Merwe, Ilne Fourie,Mandla Mbothwe and Bulelani Mabutyana, who will be tasked to select the Best Actor,Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, BestScript, Best Director, Best Production, BestInnovative Technical, and for the Option Ad-judicator’s Award.V For more information on the competition or ticketbookings (R40 per person), please contact ThembaMzondi on 078 113 5216 or email themba@sceproductions.co.za.

On the coldest, wettest mor-ning the past week I noticedwhat I thought was a drunkold man in our warm waitingroom. He sat there, soakingwet, swinging from side toside, his head on his chest. Iwas annoyed and called two ofour workers to escort him outas he obviously was not aclient of ours. They gently tookhim by the arms, stepping overthe pool of urine by his feet. What happened next humbledme. These workers, earning avery small salary and beingquite poor themselves, literallytook the clothes off their ownback to replace his soakedclothing. I felt ashamed. Hewas given warm coffee and ablanket. In the end, he wastaken to the police station, ashe did not know how he got tous. In hindsight, he might havebeen ill and not drunk at all. What a humbling experience. Idrop my head in shame, buthave learnt yet another lifelesson.

My tale of woe comes afterdriving home on PlattekloofRoad towards Panorama hospi-tal. Late at night, after nightshift, approximately 500m beforethe hospital I heard a thudunder my car but saw nothingin the road. That was about three monthsago. Last month while drivinghome I heard the loudest bangever. I did not know what itwas and kept on driving forabout 300m before stopping andgetting out to looked around myOpel bakkie and found a hugedent in the left door. Feeling abit nervous, I carried on home. The next day driving past I sawhalf a brick in the gutter of theroad that matched what hadgashed my door.I’ve been too busy to report itto the cops, but during thefollowing weeks the pile ofrocks and glass grew next to thesame spot where I was hit so Iimagine it is the same modusoperandi of either naughty kidsor attempted hijacking shouldyou stop to see what hashappened to your car. So bewarned.

Alles is ’n ‘hurdle’ omte ‘cross’.
“Elke keer as ek iets nuuts aanpak, moetek eers kyk of ek dit kán doen.”
Allan Boesak temaak.Ditwordop 11Augustus by ’nNGSen-dingkerk in Bellville-Suid onthul.
Dis in jou brein datdie dinge gebeur.

Local filmmakers are thrilled that aSouth African feature film has wonawards at two international film
award ceremonies. The local film Born to Win scooped the
GoldenCrownAward forBestEvangelis-tic Feature Film at the InternationalChristian Visual MediaConference (ICVM 2015) inOrlando, USA on 27 June, only threeweeks after win-ning the Adam Award forBest Feature Film at theSabaoth InternationalFilm Festival in Milan, Ita-ly. It also won the BronzeCrownAward for Best Fea-ture Drama.Frans Cronjé from Brac-
kenfell, who also producedthe hit movie Faith LikePotatoes, and Cobus vanden Berg from Eversdal, producer of the equallysuccessful Klein Karoo, te-amed up to produce thismovie which was releasedin August last year. The film was written and directed by
Cronjé, produced by Van den Berg andwholly filmed in George.Born to Win, based on the true story of
Leon Terblanche, poses the question:“Where is God?”“The Crown Awards are the biggest
annual film awards in the internationalChristian film industry and have been inexistence for 60 years, whereas the Saba-oth Festival is a bi-annual film festivalwhere some of the best internationalChristian filmsare screened,” saysCron-
jé.Cronje, whowas inMilan andOrlando
to receive the awards, said: “We produceour films to havemaximumpersonal im-pact and not with the goal to win awards, but it is great to receive recognition forthe work that we do.”He said the Golden Crown Award in
particular helps to market the movieworld wide.“We are awaiting the final paperwork,
but since the announce-ment of the Crown Awardsa second major Hollywooddistributor has expressedinterest in theatrical relea-se of the movie. I think thequality and impact of Bornto Win, combined with thesuccess we still have withFaith like Potatoes createdthis interest,” he said.Faith like Potatoes, relea-
sed in 2006, is the true storyof Angus Buchan and hasbeen seen by over 300 milli-on people in 17 languages, with over three millionDVDs sold.“Making a film takes a
massive teameffort and I amproudof theteam we had on Born to Win, startingwith Leon and Elmarie Terblanche whoallowed us to tell their story, Cobus vanden Berg as producer and two of our keyexecutive producers Billy and Tanja Ro-bertson. Our lead actor Greg Kriek play-ed in his first lead role and showed suchmaturity and brilliance that he has sincebeen really busy on other films.”Born to Win, available on DVD, will
again be on the big screen in August andOctober through the new CrossKine net-work.

The number of whales caught in ropes along the South African coast has increased. PHOTO: NSRI
Cheers whenwhales are freeNICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
As the winter brings an increased num-ber of whales to our waters, the chan-ces increase that the giants become
entangled in ropes, nets and lobster traps.Such cases are rising, says South African
WhaleDisentanglementNetwork (SAWDN)head Mike Meyers.
On average, 15 to 17 cases of whale entan-glement are reported every year. However, this number is increasing yearly as the pop-ulation increases, he says.
This year has seen eight cases already, with the whale season still only beginning. It is expected to peak in September.
Tenyears ago, a hugenumber of entangle-ments were reported, prompting the depart-ment of environmental affairs to approachthe lobster industry to fund training froman American whale disentanglement spe-cialist.
The department invited a range of role-players and SAWDN was born, with basictraining and a set of equipment taught ona mechanical whale tail.
The network now includes a variety ofpartners, including the Dolphin ProtectionAction Group, National Sea Rescue Insti-tute (NSRI), Natal Sharks Board, research-ers and whale watchers, Meyers says. Thishas created 17 centres along the South Afri-can coastline.
Every year, a new group is trained andmore equipment is manufactured. It costsabout R25 000 to set up a new team.
The network, which is now the fourthlargest in the world, is also affiliated to theInternational Whaling Commission andshares information and best practice tech-niques with organisations from other coun-tries.
Report itThe public should report any sighting of
an entangled whale immediately, says Mey-er. There have been reports of people beingkilled by whales in the past, he explains, which is why the general public should nev-
er attempt to free a whale themselves. The network will immediately dispatch a
boat to locate the animal and monitor it.The disentanglement team will then follow, using an appropriate knife to cut off what-ever rope or net the whale is caught in.
The network has a 100% success rate indisentangling whales trapped on the seabottom. However, whales entangled butable to break free are difficult to follow, andan entangled whale can face a very slowdeath, with it taking up to nine months forthe caught whale to die.
Dangerous workDisentangling the whale can be very dan-
gerous, Meyer explains. While humpback whales easily tire and
will stop thrashing about, southern rightwhales tend to kick their tails sideways andthis can seriously injure a volunteer.
Safety is very important and the volun-teers never enter thewater,Meyer says.On-ly the best equipment is used and all volun-teers are trained.
An entangled whale will spin around inthe water to attempt to free itself, Meyer ex-plains. This usually pushes the rope to-wards the whale’s tail, which the whale willkick. This action can be very dangerous tocrew trying to help the whale, he says.
“It’s a very scary thing the first time youassist a whale. Many volunteers go out withtheir heart in their throats,” he says.
But this is all worth it, as freeing a whaleis a very emotional experience.
“We’re all geared towards getting thatpiece of rope off. At the same time, we’revery close to a large animal, and they oftencry in fear. Sometimes they don’t even real-ised that they’re free and we need to givethem a touch before they take off like a bul-let,” he says. “At that stage, although we’vebeen as quiet as possible the whole time, theentire team will cheer.”V Report entangled whales to the Dolphin ActionProtection Group on 021 782 5845 or to the NSRIon 021 434 4011.V For more information or to get involved, contactMike Meyer on 082 578 7617.

Tablets installed in ambulances across themetro appear to have made emergency med-ics a target for criminals.
Three sources in the industry, who do notwant to be identified as they are not contrac-tually permitted to speak to the media, sayrobberies and attacks have spiked over thelast few months, especially in Mitchell’sPlain, Manenberg, Hanover Park and Khaye-litsha.
They believe the spike coincides with theinstallation of tablet devices which link med-ics to the call centre and provide directionsto the emergency.
Some medics who have been held up haveeven been asked to hand over the “tablets”,sources say.
The tablets, according to a source with
knowledge of the project, have been installedin a way that makes them “impossible to re-move” from the vehicles.
They are also locked to health departmentsystem, and are useless for any other user.
The installation of the devices, referred toas MDTs, cost about R300m, the source says.
Medics have reportedly raised their con-cerns with management, but have receivedno outcome.
They are now calling for communities tobe informed the devices are not removableandarenotuseable outside of the ambulance.
They say in some areas, medics evenchoose to use ambulances in which the de-vice has not yet been installed or to switchit off.
The increase in attacks has left medicsfearful, one source confirms
The department of health had not com-mented by the time of going to print.

with the help of sponsors and do-nations of new and second-handkennels, well over 400 kennelshave been provided – last yearalone 200 kennels were placed.“Where possible, owners are
expected to contribute towardsthe kennel, but we carry most ofthe cost.”To sponsor akennel costsR270,
but FAW also accepts second-hand kennels of wood or concre-te.Davies says: “Wooden kennels
are great. We also really like con-crete kennels for areas wheretheft is a problem orwe know thearea is too rough for weaker ken-nels.We place these on top of pal-lets covered in a sheet of woodand rubber.“Unfortunately, we are all
part-time volunteers and strug-gle to repair and collect so, if youcan assist by bringing donatedkennels or pallets to us in Fisan-tekraal, it makes an enormousdifference,” she says.FAW also needs donations of
second-hand household goodsand clothing for their shop in Fi-santekraal, and bric-a-brac fortheir stall at the monthly Dur-banville craft market. All fundsraised are used for mass sterili-sations and veterinary bills.V To find out more about FAW’s kennelproject email [email protected] or visittheir website at www.faw.za.org.
Shelter provides kennels
Before: This is what some sheltersfor dogs in Fisantekraal, if theyhave one, look like. In many casesthe dogs have no shelter at all.
This lucky dog, Bruno, now has a proper kennel for protection againstthe icy cold weather in winter as a result of the FAW kennel project.

Final whistlefor DannySTEHAN SCHOEMAN
DannyAbrahams, remembered as oneof the best footballers in the countryduring the 1970s, will be sorely mis-
sed. He passed away in Ruyterwacht twoweeks ago at the age of 63.He had suffered from Alz-
heimer’s Disease for thepast seven years and thecause of his death is relatedto the disease. His career began inElsies
River at the local St Augus-tine’s Club.It soon became apparent
that he was destined forgreater things. As a player he will be re-
membered as a genius whowas born with the ability tostamp his authority onmatches. With Cape Town Spurs he enthralled
crowds and it was no surprise when hewon the Federation Player of the YearAward in 1973.“My dad was a very loving and humble
man. I always had the feeling he caredmore about other people than about him-self.“The way to sum him up would be to say
he was a real people’s person,” says hisson, Dean Abrahams. His long-time friend Ivan Jack, played
many games against him, also has fondmemories.“Danny had flair and a set of skills that
made it really difficult to play against him.“We will also fondly remember Danny
for being a great family man and friend,”says Ivan.
Ivan recalls when there were serious talksof him going to play for Crystal Palace to fur-ther his career but Danny chose to stay andhelp look after his grandma as she had fallenill.“He decided family was more important
than stardom,” says Ivan.Danny’s friends and former
players started the DannyAbrahams Ex-FootballersFund to help those in need.“The fund will continue to
grow in honour of Danny andwe will continue to help ourfriends who are struggling fi-nancially,” said Jack. There will be a memorial
service today (Wednesday) at19:00 at the Western CapeChristian Centre (Old Pano-rama Bioscope) in Elsies Riv-er. His funeral will be held onSaturday.
