“Dis ’n onverantwoordelike ver-kwisting van belastinggeld. Niemandbuitendie inwoners vandie buurt baatby die gebou nie,” het hy gesê. Diemeulmoes gerestoureer gewees het tot’n stellingmeul met ’n balkon.
“Die verklaring daarvan tot nasio-nale gedenkwaardigheid nog voordatdie ‘restourasie’ plaasgevind het, wasnie net ’n flater nie, maar inderdaad ’nskande,” het hy gesê.
Volgens Wynand Theron, voorsittervan die Onze Molen-huiseienaarsver-eniging, is die inwoners baie tevredemet die uitslag van die ondersoek.
“Ons is baie dankbaar dat die erfe-nisvereniging ook betrokke geraak endie proses gedryf het.
“Dat die inwoners nou vir die meulverantwoordelik moet wees, is onaan-vaarbaar. Ons sal nooit die meul as ge-skenk aanvaar nie,” het Theron gesê.

The construction work at the intersec-tion of High Street and St John’s Road inDurbanville, which was due to be fin-ished during next week, has been delayedas a result of the rainy weather.
High Street, an important access route,has been closed off from St John’s Road sincethe start of the construction in June. Onlylocal residents are allowed access.
The construction work entails the upgrad-ing of sewerage pipes from Main Road to St
John’s Road.The project has been delayed as a result of
the very heavy rainfall experienced duringJuly.
“The contractor cannot progress with pipelaying and roadworks in this weather or thefirst couple of days after heavy rainfall aseverything remains wet, muddy and slip-pery, which limits access and safe workingconditions,” according to a notice issued bythe local subcouncil in Durbanville.
The section of High Street between Lan-
genhoven Road and St John’s Street willtherefore remain closed for traffic.
Local access to all residents is still availa-ble via Vlei Street only, but High Street doesnot provide any thoroughfare.
The project team apologises for any incon-venience this has caused to local residentsand motorists, according to the notice.

Heavy rain delays roadworks

Workers on Meerendal Wine Farm can nowenjoy hot water in their cottages for the firsttime in 25 years, after warm water cylinderswere installed thanks to a local mountainbike club.
Trails used by members of the TygerbergMountain Bike Club run through seven ofthe local farms – Nitida, Hillcrest, Kliprug,Contermanskloof, Hooggelegen, Hoogekraaland Meerendal.
Although club members are responsiblefor the maintenance of the routes, they want-ed to show their appreciation towards thefarmers for the use of their land.
“The club has been using the trail networkfor a few years now. We wanted to give backto the community and the farms we use,”said Matthew Zoutendyk, chairman of theMTB club.
This sentiment saw the club donate R5 000
to four farms for each owner to use accord-ing to his discretion.
Willie Botha, general manager of Meeren-dal, mentioned to Matthew a project drivenby farmers to supply hot water to workers’cottages.
Options to have hot water geysers in-stalled were investigated and Green Power,a green systems integrator that specialisesin energy saving installations, was ap-proached.
The company agreed to install solar gey-sers in the workers’ cottages at cost price.
The end result is the supply of warm waterto 13 cottages. On cloudy days an elementthat operates at minimal cost ensures warmwater is still available to the households.
This donation brings great relief to thefarm workers who had already saved R8 000on their own for the installation of solar gey-sers by selling vegetables grown on a patchon the farm.

In nog ’n huisroof is ’n man van Kenridgemet ’n skroewedraaier in die kopvel gesteek.Sowat 28 inbrake is in net een week aange-meld.Volgens Hendrik du Plessis van Aurora
het die rowers die aluminium-skuifvensterin die studeerkamer van hul huis in New-manstraat uitgehaal en daar ingeklim.“Dit was in ’n sone wat nie geaktiveer was
nie,” het hy gesê.Hy en sy vrou het lê en slaap toe die drie
mansdie slaapkamer inkomendiekamerlig-te aansit. Hul drie kinders van onderskeide-lik 6, 10 en 13 jaar oud het elders in die huisgeslaap en nie wakker geword nie.“Die een het bokant my met ’n lang mes
gestaan en gesê ‘lie down, if you move, I willkill you’.“Tweewasmediumgebou en die derde een
heelwat langer. Hullewas goed geklee en eenhet selfs na naskeermiddel geruik,” het hygesê.Hulle het hom forseer om die alarm af te

vroumet veters vasgebind en die kamerdeurgesluit.Hulle het by die skuifdeur in die kamer na
die swembad uitgegaan en oor die muur na’n bouperseel aan die agterkant van die huisgespring.Die rowers is weg met twee skootreke-
naars met laaiers en al, selfone, ’n beursieen kontant. “Hulle het nogal die simkaarteuit die fone gehaal en vir ons teruggegee.“Onshet gedink ’nalarmstelsel vir die leef-
vertrekke en ’n sekerheidshek na die slaap-kamers is genoeg, maar ’n mens moet ookstraalligte (beams) rondom jou huis instal-leer en jou vensters toemaak om veilig te
wees,” het hy gesê.“Hulle hou jou dop en kyk watter kamers
se gordyne nie saans toegetrek word nie. Disdan waar hulle probeer inbreek,” het hy ge-sê.“Hulle het ook beslis iets aan ons hond ge-
doen. Hy het snaaks gereageer en was ná dievoorval kreupel in sy agterbeen,” het hy ge-sê.Volgens Du Plessis was hy baie beïndruk
met die polisie.“Hulle was blitsig. Binne 20 minute was
daar ’n tienstuks polisiebeamptes, beraders,’n vingerafdrukdeskundige en speurders bymy huis.In die week tot verlede Sondag alleen was
daar altesame 28 inbrake.In ’n ander huisroof in Kenridge op 20 Ju-
lie is die kopvel van ’n inwoner in ’n gestoeimet rowers met ’n skroewedraaier stukkendgesteek.Die man het omstreeks 00:20 ’n geraas in
sy studio gehoor. Hy het drie mans in sy stu-dio gekry. Hulle het die glasdeur van die stu-dio gebreek om in te kom. Hulle het hommet’n skroewedraaier gedreig toe die stoeierybegin het.’n Skootrekenaar is buitgemaak.Sowat 28 inbrake is aangemeld, hoofsaak-
lik in Aurora, Vierlanden, Sonstraal, Son-straalhoogte, Goedemoed, Uitzicht, Durban-ville Hills, De Bron en Eversdal, lui ’n mis-daadverslag van die Durbanville-polisie.’n Vuurwapen is gesteel, asook items soos
skootrekenaars, rekenaars, gereedskap, ju-weliersware, elektriese toebehore, ’n televi-siestel en ’n kamera.Drie pogings tot inbraak is aangemeld in
dieselfde tyd, asook 12 voorvalle van diefstaluit motorvoertuie. Vier motors is as gesteelaangemeld.Die Durbanville-polisie het inwoners ver-

They endeduppartying in the street,jamming every single driveway and block-ing traffic. The park in the street was alsoused, and everywhere open cars were blar-ing loud music with youths drinking anddancing. The next day hundreds of bottleswere left strewn in the streets and parks,”Twigg says and adds that the parents of theyouths were out of town over that weekend.
Twigg is adamant that this type of behav-iour is unacceptable in a residential suburband last week told TygerBurger that the citywill pull out all the stops to ensure that thisdoes not happen again.

Sedert 1 Julie het die winkel van binneen buite 'n nuwe baadjie aangetrek, asdeel van die grootskaalseopgraderingsproses van die TygervalleiWinkelsentrum. Die winkel se ligging hetnie verander nie en is effe groter asvoorheen.

A Durbanville resident recently made anATMwithdrawalof amereR50 tobuyher-self lunch. What she received in returnwas having her bank account cleaned out.
It was only two weeks later that the stolenmoney was refunded to Lilian Badrick by thebank. Accompanying the repayment was anapology for the inconvenience she experi-enced.Lilian withdrew the money during lunch
towards the end of June at the ATM at the7-Eleven situated in Vierlanden Durbanville.Just over two hours after her withdrawal,
Lilian received an SMS notification fromStandard Bank (with who she banks).“I was at work in Durbanville when I re-
ceived the SMS that a few thousand rand waswithdrawn from my account at a centre inPretoria,” she says.Lilian immediately phoned the bank’s
fraud line to report the incident and the fol-lowing morning she visited the nearestStandard Bank branch.“One of the bank officials phoned the fraud
number and handed the telephone to me. Up-on asking the person on the other side of the
line about when the money that was stolenwould be refunded, he simply kept repeat-ing over and over again that the case wasunder investigation. I was given no re-as-surance whatsoever that I would get mymoney back,” exclaimed Lilian.To top it all, Lilian noticed the next day
she was charged R70 for the replacementcard she received.“I called and insisted I should not be
charged for this replacement card, becauseit was due to inadequate security measuresat the bank’s ATMs that I was forced to ob-tain a replacement card and that it was dueto my money having been stolen out of myaccount.”A couple of days after the incident Lilian
again visited the 7-Eleven, where manage-ment of the store told her several people hadreported having money stolen out of theiraccounts after using that particular ATM.After putting up a warning to warn pro-
spective ATM clients, they were subse-quently forced byStandardBank to take thewarning down.While Lilian was inside the bank, there
was another customer who found herself inexactly the same situation.In response, Erik Larsen, senior manag-
er, Media Relations at Standard Bank, said thebank refunded Lilian’s money and apologisedagain for the inconvenience.
“We assure her we will continue trying toprovide her with the best service possible,”Larsen said.

Keeping a child interested can be a daunt-ing task in this day of technological gadg-ets and information overload.
When themessageyouare conveying is oneof staying on the straight and narrow, notbuckling to peer pressure and saying no tocommon temptations like drug use, the taskbecomes that much harder.The group of Dogs Against Drugs (Dad) in
Table View, however, seems to have found awinning recipe in warning children aboutthis epidemic problem.Their talks warning against drug use not
only hit home, but also have a lasting effect
on those who hear it.“The response has been phenomenal,” says
Werner Fichtner,who started theDad projectin 2009.Fichtnerhas a longhistory inworkingwith
dogs following his days in the defence forcedog unit and training explosives sniffer dogsat Koeberg as well as narcotics sniffer dogsin Grabouw.The Dad project involves doing an hour-
long talk at schools and any other interestedorganisations, and using the dogs in a drug-sniffing exercise.“When you do an event with dogs, you im-
mediately have the children’s attention andwhat you say stayswith them.Weusually askthe children to hide the drugs among some
of their suitcases and then let the dogs sniffit out. They gape open mouthed at what thedogs can do,” Fichtner said describing the re-action of the children at the schools theyhavevisited thus far.“We had done talks at schools all across the
Western Cape from the Cape Flats to privateschools.”The Dad team were especially touched by
the youngsters from one school who did aproject on the dogs after their visit.“They drew the dogs and then handed over
the pictures to us,” he says with a smile.Fichtner’s passion for trainingdogs, is only
equalled by his zeal to continue the fightagainst drugs.“The police can’t be expected to fight this
problem alone, the community must get in-volved and this is our way of helping in thefight against drugs.“Drugs in the Western Cape is almost like
fighting a losing battle but if everyone joinsin, we can at least try to make a difference,”he said.Although it is very expensive to train the
dogs to sniff out narcotics, Fichtner offers thedemonstrations for free.“Some of these dogs are trained to sniff out

Making the worlda better placeTygerBurger’s 10thWant ons Kan!/’Causewe Can! concert Sunday night, was onceagain a roaring success and three deserv-ing organisations benefited.
It is commendable that all the artists –the cream of the SouthAfricanmusic crop– performedwith absolutely no remunera-tion. All ticketmoneywent to the benefici-aries. All arrangements for the fabulousevent were taken care of by a variety ofsponsors. In the end more than R160 000was raised – because we can.
TygerBurger publishes so many storiesabout the activities, as well as needs of de-serving organisations. For the last 10years, however, we have also done our bitto help these organisations directly.
Through the annual Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert, we invest in thecommunity with which we do business.We hope to increase the visibility of theseorganisations each year, to make themmore visible for support from elsewhere.
Thank you to everyone who bought aticket, to everyone who made themselves–money, goods or services – available freeof charge. We know that your intentionsare noble.

Nadat ons ’n kop-pie koffie geniet het, het my vrou ’n inkopie-trollie geneem omdat sy ’n liggaamsgebrekhet en dit moeilik vind om te loop. Sy hethaar handsak in die trollie geplaas en verderalleen na die roltrap gestap.
Toe sy daar aankom, het sy die trappe ge-vat om by die motor te kom.
In diemotor het sy agtergekom haar hand-sak is weg.
Sy is dadelik weer af, maar in die trolliewas ook niks. Baie benoud en beangs het ek’n sekerheidsbeampte gekry.Hiermoet ek sy
naam noem: Nisiango Tebinkosi. Tebinkosibeteken “Vertrou op die Here”.
Hy het gesê hy het die handsak gekry enby die kantoor ingehandig.
Hy het sy uiterste bes gedoen ommy te kal-meer en by te staan. Hy het ’n rolstoel gaanhaal vir my vrou om op te sit om gemaklikte wees.

Gestremdesse plekke nievir anderEkwil graag weet wat die mense dink watop die parkering vir gestremdes parkeer.Ons mense wat die teken het om dit te ge-bruik,moet op ’nanderplekgaanparkeer.
Ek dink diemensewat daar parkeer, ge-bruik dit net, omdat hulle lui is of nieweetwat die teken beteken nie.
Ek wonder wanneer iemand van hulleeendag dié plekke moet gebruik, of hullesal terug dink hoe hulle die plekke mis-bruik het.
Ek weet nie of hulle nie kan lees nie,want daar staan parkering net vir mensemet die gestremde-teken en hulle wys dieteken.
Die winkels wil nie betrokke raak nie,die karwagte kyk anderpad, daar is nie-mand om ons te help nie.
Die verkeersafdeling mag nie daar helpnie, want dit is die winkel se parkeerplek-ke.
Ek wonder of die mense wat nie ge-stremd is nie se geld beter is, want daaris baie plek vir hulle en beperkte plek virmense met gestremde-tekens. Ek wonderas die mense elke keer ’n kaartjie kry enmoet betaal en hulle wiele geklamp wordof hulle dan sal leer. As iemand net wilhelp, kan ons sonder stres ook winkel toegaan of na ander plekke waar daar ges-tremde-tekens is. Ek wil graag die Parow-mark gelukwens. Hulle het net ’n bokkiedaar gesit en netmensemet die kaartmagdaar parkeer.As jywegtrek,worddie bok-kie weer daar neergesit. Ek dink die win-kels kan iets daar leer. With two singles and a new vid-eo just released, Cold HandChemistry are putting them-selves back on the radar.
The band have been quiet whileworking on their debut album, butDavid Benzaquen, the band’s key-boardist and percussionist as-sures: “We are never gone fromwhat we are doing.”When TygerBurger first fea-
tured the band about two yearsago, they had just gone through aline-up change. Dave is joined inthe band by Chantel Smit on vo-cals, Donovan Laughton on gui-tar, Robert Fick on drums and Ge-off Gunn on bass.Dave says their priority at the
time was to bring the new mem-bers up to speed.“That meant that we had to
change stylistically as well,” hesays, pointing out that there were new in-fluences and styles in the band.Chantel says this process saw theirmusic
becomingmoreaccessible. “Weareactuallymore versatile than we thought,” she says.Dave says that without the luxury of
evolving over albums, they found their ex-isting material evolve.“We did it in one album,” Chantel offers,
adding: “We are starting to paint more onthe canvas than we used to, using differentcolours.”
Just because they are using coloursthough, doesn’t mean that Cold Hand ha-ven’t retained their dark qualities.“You don’t have to be heavy to be dark,”
Chantel says.She says they don’t want to be seen as just
a metal band, and describes thegroup rather as a bridge band be-tween rock and metal.“We do of course regard metal
very highly,” Dave adds, explain-ing that they appreciate that themetal listeners understand whatthey are doing.The bandhave finished their de-

Notice is hereby given of the commencement of a public participation process for the retrospectiveauthorisation of certain listed Activities at the Kliprug Quarry on Portion 5 of the Farm Kliprug No. 198,which is located in the Western Tygerberg Hills, in terms of Section 24G of the National EnvironmentalManagement Act, 1998 (Act 107 of 1998), as amended (“NEMA”).
Project Proposal:The then Department of Minerals and Energy issued a Mining Licence to Brickrush (Pty) Ltd. (nowAfrimat Aggregate Trading (Pty) Ltd.) on 3 December 2008 for the development and operation of theKliprug Quarry, in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act 28 of 2002)(MPRDA).
The Kliprug Quarry was developed between June and November 2009, after which the quarry operatedusing a mobile crusher and power screens, while the permanent infrastructure was being constructed.Production of materials has, however, been, stopped by Afrimat Aggregates pending the authorisation ofthe NEMA S24G application and the Land Use Planning Ordinance Application.
In order to obtain a retrospective authorisation from the Department of Environmental Affairs andDevelopment Planning (DEA&DP) Afrimat Aggregate Trading has applied, in terms of Section 24G ofNEMA, for the rectification of the unlawful commencement or continuation of listed activities, since theactivities were undertaken without prior authorisation by DEA&DP.
Activities applied for:Activities listed in GN No. R 386, of 21 April 2006, namely: Activities 1(k), 4, 15, and 16; and Activity listedin GN No. R. 387 of 21 April 2006 in terms of, Activity 2.

It’s been a long and bumpy roadfor Renette Bloem but a dreamcome true to represent South Af-rica on the grandest stage of themall – the Paralympic Games inLondon.
The blind 48-year-old fromBrackenfell believes she has a re-alistic chance to make the final ofher main and favourite event, the100m breaststroke.
The Paralympic Games runfrom 29 August to 9 September atthe same venues as the OlympicGames already in full swing.
South Africa can only take fivemen and five women swimmers.
“I’ve always had a love for wa-ter and started swimming atschool. I lost interest for a whileand did some serious road run-ning. I like the 10km to 21kmrange of races.
“In 2007 I was back in the pooland haven’t looked back since.”
At the World Championshipsin 2010 held in Holland, Bloemmade the finals of the 100mbreaststroke placing fourth,showing she can compete withthe best on the planet.
Last year Turkey hosted the In-ternational Blind Sport Federa-tion Championships where Blo-em won silver. She also beat Na-
talie du Toit earlier this year inDurban in the 100m breaststroke,winning Gold.
“It’s been very tough, at 48 youhave to manage your body and beaware not to over-train. Current-ly I practise six days a week fortwo to three hours a day. I wakeup at 04:00 to be in the pool by05:00.
“Luckily the gym is basicallyacross the road for me. Some-times I go through to Stellen-bosch as they have a startingblock that is the same as we willuse in London.
“I don’t believe I am a givenmedallist, but if one is in a final,anything can happen. In 2010 I setthe South African record in the100 Breaststroke at 1.38.67. Myother races are the 50m and 100mfreestyle and 200m individualmedley.
“This will be my last competi-tive championships, so I will giveit my absolute best to end on ahigh. Although I am very focusedon the job at hand, I can’t wait toget home after the Games and justlead a normal life.
“Preparing for the Paralym-pics takes over your whole life,”said Bloem.
Few people know that Bloem isfamily of the Olympic medallistRyk Neethling. Renette Bloem is hopeful of a medal at the Paralympic Games.

Durbanville het in ’n taai tweestryd net-net met 19-18 met Brackenfell afgereken,maar die Durbies sal die eerste wees om teerken dat, indien die Brakke oor ’n meer be-troubare stelskopper beskik het, daar ’n an-der wenspan sou gewees het. HTS Bellvillese vier drieë teen Jan van Riebeeck was niegenoeg om hom die pyp te laat rook nie. Dietuisspan was met 32-26 bobaas. Monument-park en D.F.
