DURBANVILLE
RUNNING: PENSIONERS LEAVE DOCTORS IN AWE
Grans beat bone blues
ESM ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
I
t was doctors orders that got Marianne
Nelson running, and shes still going
strong at 70-years-old.
When she was 55 her doctor ordered her
to start doing light exercise like walking to
combat her osteoporosis.
Butwhenshe joined theRun/Walk forLife
in Welgemoed, she could not even walk
around the rugbyfield.
But Marianne, who now resides in Dur-
banville, did not give up, and five years later
she ran her first Comrades.
Now, 15 years later, she has twoComrades
marathons and two Two Oceans marathons
under her belt, and this year will complete
her eighth Two Oceans halfmarathon.
Not only did shepermanently improveher
bone density from 53 % to 80 % - something
the doctors are still in awe over - but she also
met her now best friend, Cathy Taylor (72)
from Plattekloof when Cathy joined the
Run/Walk for Life in Welgemoed in 2000.
They since joined the Durbanville Athle-
tics Club in 2005 when they becamemore se-
riously involved in running.
The two have been running together for
14 years now and are fondly referred to as
the Durbanville twins.
It is amazing how we turn up in exactly
the same running gear same t-shirt, same
shoes, said Marianne. They are now mem-
bers of the Durbanville Run/Walk for Life
since January, where they train three times
a week. The club operates from Durbanville
High schools sport premises.
Shared experiences
Their lives became interwoven as a result
of spending so much time, sometimes hard
times, together running.
Tragically, they also share the heartbreak
of losing a son in a car accident. Cathys son
died on 6 September 2006 and Mariannes
son four years later on 10 February 2010.
Undoubtedly our fellowship derived
through running with each other. It helped
us both to cope and share our loss, says Ca-
thy.
Marianne started walking after severe
back pain in 1999. Her doctor suggested she
start light exercise to build up her bone den-
sity. Bonematerial fromher hip had already
been transplanted to strengthen her disinte-
grating vertebrae, which caused the pressu-
re on a nerve in her spine.
Hitting the road
After a year she took walking seriously
and participated in long distance road runs.
In 2001 she completed her first 50 km Big
Walk in less than seven hours. A year later
a halfmarathon followed and in 2003 shewon
the womens 60-plus category of the Knysna
marathon. She also won a gold medal in the
25 km Big Walk.
She then took part in the SA Masters
Track and Field Championships in 2006 and
won gold medals in the 5km and 10km race
walking for women 60 years and older.
In 2006 she achieved her WP Masters co-
lours in these events. Two years later she
again won gold medals in both distances at
the SAMasters Track and Field Champions-
hips.
In 2009 she was selected to represent WP
at the SA Cross Country championships in
Pretoria, where she won a silver medal in
the 65 years and older category. She also bro-
ke the record in 3000m race walking in the
masters category.

A year later in 2010 she received SA Mas-
ters colours in 5km race walking and the
year thereafter she took up trail running.
She and Cathy did their first AfricanX
trailrun over three days in Kleinmond as
the team The Grannies and were awar-
ded the Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award.
In 2012 Marianne also received SA Mas-
ters colours in 10 km race walking.
Cathy started her path to fitness when
shewas 56-years-old and begunwalking up
to 8 km every day along the beach at Blou-
bergstrand.
When she moved to the northern su-
burbs in 2000 she join the Run/Walk for Li-
fe in Welgemoed and met Marianne. She
walked about 6400km in four years, after
which she completed the first of five mara-
thons.
She joined the Durbanville Athletics
Club with Marianne and started taking
part in track and field 5km and 10km
events, achieving her national colours in
2008, of which she is extremely proud.
In 2006 she did the first of three TwoOce-
ans ultramarathons. She has also comple-
ted five Two Oceans halfmarathons.
She joined Marianne in 2011 doing trail
running.
But in 2012 she fractured her right ankle
and, after making a come-back in Decem-
ber last year, was advised by her doctor to
stop running and rather focus on walking
due to continuouss back pain as a result
of osteoarthritis.
In January this year she and Marianne
decided to join the Run/Walk for Life in
Durbanville, feeling that being such good
friends, we need to stay together, Cathy
said.
And now we have completed the circle
fromwalking, to running, back to walking
even if we do it shuffle shuffle,Marian-
ne added.
Not bad for two grannies - Marianne has
six grandchildren and Cathy has seven.
Their husbands are very proud of them.
If it was not for my husband, Alan, who
drivesmearoundeverywhere, itwouldnot
have been possible, Marianne said.
Last SaturdayMarianne took part in the
15kmMeiringspoort trail run, while Cathy
walked the Brackenfell halfmarathon over
21 km.
Theyplan to do their next three-dayAfri-
canX trailrun together in 2015.

H
es a stockbroker, an adventurer and
now a millionaire, and it all started
on the humble streets of Belhar.
GrahamJenneker (29) and his familymo-
ved to Bellvilles Stellenridge 15 years ago,
but this self-confessed mall rat who won
the hit reality tv show Survivior: Champi-
ons on Sunday, has never forgotten his
roots.
I havent given post-Survivor much
thought, but I would love to do something
to give back. I mean, I grew up in Belhar
for a long time. I have seen a lot of bad
things happen around me. It would be nice
to change the community somehow, Gra-
ham told TygerBurger on Friday.
We caught up with him and fellow Top
three contestants Buhle Madlala and Sivu
Xabanisa before they took to the stage at the
TygerValley shopping centre for the Valley
of the Stars concert.
Graham, who shares a name with his fa-
ther and has two elder brothers, is deeply
grounded.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a
household that, regardless of what was
going on around us, had a lot of love, he
says.
My father and mother taught us correc-
tly. No matter what situation we were in,
we always had a good foundation.
Graham says he understands how diffi-
cult it can be for people from his old neck
of the woods who may not have the same
solid base.
Maybe its a lot more difficult for people
who dont have this foundation it makes
things a lot more challenging. But regard-
less of the situation, parents need to play
their role.
Graham said children also needed to
step up, especially if they are not fortuna-
te enough to have parents. I know, its ea-
sier said than done, but its all up to what
they do with their education.
He wants to give youngsters hope.
The main thing is that if you have the
right attitude andmindset, you can overco-
me any situation youre in.
You just need to start from within, to
make a decision to uplift your life. Try not
towait for someone else to change your life,
and dont blame your surroundings. Yes,
thatmight be a factor, but you are the chan-
ge you want to see, he says.
Graham started his new job when he got
back from the island, and is planning on
marrying long term girlfriend Erin
Arendse after hewas proclaimedwinner on
Sunday.
He says the experience has changed him,
but he remains with his feet planted firmly
on terra firma.
I think people recognise me now to take
a picture, he said, but added, I just feel
like a normal guy.

@lounotes
Aanhangers van die gewilde Afrikaanse
spotprentreeks, Idees Vol Vrees, kan dit bin-
nekort in die vlees sien.
n Plaaslike grapmaker en n rolprentma-
kerhethandegevat om IdeesVolVrees (IVV),
in n aanlyn reeks te ontwikkel, waar di
dubbelsinnige spotprentreeks met sy slim
en skreeusnaakse woordspelings lewen-
dig gesien sal word.
Die eerste program van IVV is Donderdag
15 Mei aanlyn bekend gestel.
Bellville se Kobus Galloway, die komedi-
ant verantwoordelik vir die IVV-spotprente,
enDurbanville seRemanodeBeer vanTwel-
veEleven-produksies, het met die hulp van
Werner Smit, nog n plaaslike komediant,
die spotskrifte vir die eerste webisode ge-
skryf.
Idees Vol Vrees, vertel Remano.
een aand in Durbanville oor n koue biertjie
saamgesels, toeweet ons ons sitmet iets spe-
siaals. Kobus s hy weet nie of daar tans so
werk. Soms werk die idee beter lewendig
as in n spotprent. Ek verduidelik soms n
as die illustrasie self, s hy.
Die eerste webisode van Die Idees Vol
Vrees Show is in die Durbanville-omgewing
geskiet. Ons is almal van die noordelike
voorstede, so dit is ons hood, s Remano.
sake-ondernemingwat aanboordwil komas
borg, s hy.

M
et n squeeze gaan tot 10 000 mense
handskud met n wildvreemdeling
alles in die goeie gees waarin Kaap-
stad aangewys is as 2014 se wreldontwerp-
hoofstad.
Die internasionale raad van nywerheids-
ontwerpers wys elke twee jaar n stad as w-
reldontwerphoofstad (WDC) aan. As ont-
werphoofstad sal Kaapstad gasheer wees vir
verskeie geleenthede en projekte met die te-
ma Live Design. Transform Life.
Hennie Meyer, bekroonde en internasio-
naal bekende keramiekkunstenaar, was ge-
wysing by die jaarvergadering van Cera-
mics SA.
werp hoofstad.
geesdrif aanTygerBurger, almoeshydi sto-
Alles mensgemaak is
eintlik ontwerp, as n mens mooi daaroor
Voorlegging
Hulle het n voorlegging gedoen en hul
projek is gekeur as een van sowat 460 uit by-
kans 1 300 aansoeke. Hul projek is ingeskryf
in die kategorie Bridging theDivide onder
die onderafdeling Connections that unite.
Die projek Ukusela eKapa, wat gepas
SlurpKaapstad op beteken, behels dat ver-
skillende mense bekendes en onbekendes
hul handdruk doen op 10 000 klam kleibek-
ers. Die bekers word dan geteken met slegs
diepersoonsenaamenouderdomen pragtig
beteken n drinkding sonder handvatsel.
doenhet, ontvang n sleutelhouer enkandan
ander, uniek-ontwerpte drinkbeker.
Zanne Stapelberg, wat ook onlangs haar
handdruk by haar huis in Durbanville ge-
Dis amazing.
drP.Brink, Zapiro, RobLouw,TimNoakes,
die sjefMargot Janse, dieKaapstadse outeur
en skrywer, Margie Orford, en Margit Mey-
er-Rdenbeck, bekend as Dowwe Dolla.
Joernaliste
Joernaliste en ander personeel vanTyger-
Burger kon ook onlangs hul eie handdruk-
stempel op die kleibekers afdruk toe Hennie
hul projek daar gaan bekend stel het.
Ons hoop mense sal die ikoonbekers as
versamelaarsitems begin beskou en ons be-
Andr P. Brink se beker is verlede naweek
by die Franschhoek-Letterkundefees op-
geveil tenbatevandiedorp sebiblioteek-
fonds.
Ons gaan 10 000 bekers maak wat die-
selfde lyk, maar nie twee gaan presies
dieselfde wees nie, omdat die handdruk
op elkeen verskil. Dis asof jy handskud
nie.
Hennie, n oud-keramiekdosent en de-
partementshoof van die Tygerberg-
kunssentrum tot 13 jaar gelede, het ges
die opvoedkundige aspek van die projek
is belangrik.
Ons wou h ons projek moet pas by
die leuse Live design. Transform life.
As jy aan jouself kan dink as n ontwer-
n Meganiese ingenieur by Easycan, Paul
go, sleutelhouers en ander ontwerpe, asook
animasie-produksielyn om die projek aan
mense te verduidelik, gedoen. Larita Engel-
huis genomineer is. Die ikoonbekers sal la-
ter opgeveil word, waarvan die helfte van
die inkomste aan die spesifieke liefdadig-
heidsorganisisie sal gaan.

kers gemaak word. Besoek ukusela ekapaUkusela op

With World Hunger Day on 28 May swif-
tly approaching, Brackenfell based orga-
nisation Shiloh invites everyone in the
Peninsula to actively become part of the
effort to prevent hunger.
Malnutrition and under nourishment
areno longer somethingwe can cast aside
as relegated to somewhere up in Africa.
The reality is that a staggering percen-
tage of children in our surrounding areas
are victims of this preventable condition.
Wallacedene, Khayalitsha, Du Noon
and Mfuleni are only some of the malnu-
trition hotspots where it is not uncom-
mon for children to go to bed hungry
saysShilohPRmanagerEstelleVeldman.
The school-going children also have
difficulty concentrating in class and are
often labelled as slow or lazy. Our bodies
are not designed to work or play without
the necessary fuel to keep everything
working.Malnutrition causes severe loss
of brain function, muscle development
and concentration, says Veldman.
Shiloh aims to sign up awhopping 3000
debit orders, where every R3 donated to
Shiloh through the Debit Order Drive en-
sures a meal to a hungry child.
We encourage the public to sign up for
a debit order for as little as R30 or R50.
For the same price as a fast food lunch,
you can feed 10 hungry kids everymonth.
AlthoughWorld Hunger Day is once a ye-
ar,wehave to combat this issue every day
of the year and therefore need sustainabi-
lity. If you have the heart to help, why not
involve your colleagues, school friends
and family to take part in this life-chan-
ging drive.
Just imagine the impact we can have
collectively, but we need the help of each
individual.
BOK Radio will broadcast live from
Shiloh Relief on the day.
Deliciously pancakes and coffee will be
for sale and the Shiloh office will be open
for extended hours during next week for
the public to drop off donations (07:00 to
19:00 Mon to Fri and 09:00 to 12:00 on Sa-
turday)
The public can assist with groceries
such as canned food, coffee, tea, rice, toi-
letries and bedding.
Or roll up your sleeves and get busy
with the crew at Shiloh by sorting and
packing donations received.
Their offices are situated at 15 Gemini
Street, Brackenfell Industria.

skoene, skryfbehoeftes, speelgoed, boe-

Verwaarlosing
Di organisasie, wat daarop fokus om
kinders te beskerm teen verwaarlosing,
mishandeling, uitbuiting, seksuele mo-
lestering en seksuele misbruik, het die
afgelope boekjaar 5 482 kinders in die

My voorstel is dat die ontwik-

n ander atletiekbaan op hul eie

Indien onderhandelings nie

LEWENSKIEKIE
Join the drive
to provide
blankets
With winter fast approaching, one cannot
help but spare a thought for the people
and animals left to brave the gruelling
elements.
It was a simple thought like this that
saw the birth of South Africas annual
Twitter Blanket Drive (#TBD2014).
Based on the premise that if every
South African on Twitter donated one
blanket, there would be far less people
fighting the cold, a simple tweet started a
national initiative.
Now, every year a group of volunteers
collect blankets which are then donated
to organisations that redistribute them to
those in need.
TygerBurger has joined the initiative
and will be acting as a drop-off point
until the end of the drive on Wednesday
28 May.
With the icy temperatures and rainy
autumn weve had, theres no telling how
cold this years winter might get. A warm
blanket could make a world of difference
to someone who doesnt have much else.
On the subject of blankets, polar fleece
blankets are preferred, as they are more
durable and dry quicker in wet condi-
tions, but any donations are welcome.
Blankets collected this year will be
officially handed over at the Protea Fire
and Ice hotel in the CBD on Thursday 29
May and everyone is welcome to attend,
provided you bring a blanket of course.
More information about the blanket
drive and how to help spread some
warmth this winter is available on
www.tygerburger.co.za.

We make sure we are not out of stock and if so, replace our stock as soon
as possible. We will even deliver items to customers when it is out of stock.
Pateras added.
Pick n Pay Durbanville also offers a free home delivery service.
The third leg is that of advertising and social responsibility. We are active in
our community in various social responsibility projects, Pateras said.
At Christmas Pick n Pay put a huge tree in front of the store with tags for
gifts for the children of the Durbanville Childrens Home.
The Quadriplegic Association of South Africa (QASA) is also one of the
beneciaries, as well as the Durbanville Lions Club, the local police and
retirement homes.
This year their prot share on Mandela Day led to R5 000 being donated to
the Fisantekraal Trauma Unit. Various local pre-primary and other schools,
churches and crches benet regularly from the Durbanville Pick n Pays
generosity.
Pick n Pay Durbanville are also totally energy efcient. All the lights, geysers
and the stores refrigeration plant are controlled with power scheduling to
save electricity.
The retail table is nally balanced by its fourth leg, the companys people.
We manage to keep our staff, Dyer said. Seven staff members will receive
their 20 years of service certicates this year.
It is also our policy to provide growth and opportunity to our staff, he
continued. One of the store managers for nine years now, Nicky Faro (50)
started at Pick n Pay Durbanville as a trolley porter.
The four legs of the retail table are the cornerstones of how we operate,
Pateras said.
With these partners, it is clear that Ackermans original vision is still safe in
the hands of Pick n Pay Durbanville.

Pick n Pay founder Raymond Ackermans legacy of good business, has been
practised daily at the Durbanville Pick n Pay for the past two decades.
Pick n Pay Durbanvilles 20th birthday is celebrated from Wednesday 21 May
to Sunday 8 June, with hundreds of prizes to be given away in till slip draws.
Customers can also look forward to several specials during this period.
The Durbanville Pick n Pay was opened by Roy Moss in 1995. It was the
rst Pick n Pay in the Western Cape and only the second Pick n Pay franchise
in South Africa. It was sold to Graham Pateras, Director of Pick n Pay
Durbanville, and his then partners, in 1999.
Durbanville Pick n Pay never let go of the four legs of the retail table
advocated by Raymond Ackerman since the start of the retail business in the
early 1960s.
Our business is based on these fundamental principles, said Llywellyn Dyer,
a Pick n Pay Durbanville partner for the past three years. The other two
partners are Julian Leibman, one of the original partners, and Manuel de
Andrade, who joined six years ago.
The rst table leg is administration, and refers to the various administrative
controls, nance and store development. This led to the revamp of the original
store from 2010 to January 2011 to the modern state-of-the-art layout of
today. The new store is not only 50% larger, but various departments were
added, such as a fresh department with a sushi bar, a deli with a salad bar, a
hot food department, a butchery with a wider range of products, an artisan
bread station where delicious breads are freshly baked in the store, as well as
separate clothing and liquor stores.
The parking space was also increased. We as investors put our money
forward to upgrade the store for a better shopping platform for our
customers, said Pateras.
The second leg, merchandise, is met by establishing what consumers really
want, and providing it at the right price. We are always trying to increase our
general merchandise offering, said Dyer.

Die plaaslike jong skoonheid, Monique

verledenaweek inPretoria aangewysasdie
nuwe Mej. Junior Suid-Afrika, n gesogte
nasionale titel wat voorheen asMej. Tiener

week.
Haar hare, kleredrag en grimering is ek-
sie-perfeksie, en haar selfvertroue is ooglo-
pend. Dis moeilik om te glo dat sy op so n
jong ouderdom al so baie maatskaplike uit-
dagings aangepak het. Monique is al reeds
n geruime tyd betrokke by die mense van
bogenoemde informele nedersetting op die
oewers van die Lourensford-rivier.
Met verlede jaar se verskriklike vloede
het diemense alles verloor klere, komber-
se enmatrasse. Sewentig mense is ontruim
en die nood was hartverskeurend, vertel
sy. Onsmoes baie vinnig komberse, klere
en ander noodvoorrade insamel om die
mense by te staangedurendedi verskrikli-
skap bygestaan toe n verwoestende brand

watermassameegesleur salword, s sy be-
Monique beskryf haarself as n vriendeli-
