Bergville Primary learners are on theroad to becoming bookworms.
The school in Bishop Lavis recently cele-brated the opening of their library andschool principal AleemAbrahams confessedthat this was a dream come true for him, andthe learners of the school.“I have always felt that reading is a major
part of education that needs to be encour-aged,” he said.“With theopeningof this library Iwant the
teachers to work with me to show our chil-dren that reading should be something thatthey can enjoy even when they are not atschool.“Theopeningof this librarywill be of bene-
fit to more than the learners because wewant to encourage parents to become moreinvolvedwith the education of their childrenthrough reading, and all the resources willbe here for them.”Jean Williams of Biblionef South Africa,
the organisation that assisted with the set-ting up of the library, also said that the or-ganisation was motivated to help the schoolbecause the principal was so passionateabout the education of his learners.“It was a joy for us toworkwith this school
because theywant the best for their learners,and this library is going to play a big partin their education,” she said.
“Now the work is up to the teachers to getthe learners to love books. They must findways to openup theirminds to discoverwhatreading can do for them.“My love for books began at primary
school but it was a teacherwho took the timeto make them special for me that has lastedthroughout my life, and now its somethingthat I enjoy doing as well.”Biblionef is a book donation organisation
that supports literacy and education.

Education is also about learning lessonsin life.
That is the important message that a groupof Grade 10 learners from Valhalla Second-ary have learnt after completing a Life Ori-entation (LO) project in the community.
The group of learners, Ashleen Swanepoel,Stephny Fortuin, Jamie-Lee Stemmet, Car-men April and Destiny Francis, decided thatthey could show how youth care about theirneighbourhood when they were given a LOproject to show how they could make a differ-ence in the lives of others.
For the first part of their project they de-cided that they would visit the Elsies RiverSAPS and offer to help with chores aroundthe station.
“Sometimes we forget how hard the policework in our areas to keep us safe,” saidSwanepoel.
“While we could not help them with theircrime-fighting we decided that there weremany other ways that we could show themthat we care.”
Communication officer at the station, CaptPierre Jordaan, said that the police werethankful for the project.
“Efforts like these are really appreciatedby the police,” he said.
“They showed how much they cared by do-ing chores in our kitchen every afternoon,general cleaning up in the station and evenwashing vehicles.
“They touched the hearts of all that theymet during their visit.”
To end off their project they decided thatwith the help of the police they wanted toshow other young people how youth shouldcare for their community.
“We ended our project by organising a
soup kitchen at Clarke Primary,” added Des-tiny Francis.
“This was also an important part of ourproject because there are too many childrenthat are going to school hungry.
“When we handed out the soup and breadit was a joy for us to see how thankful thechildren were.”
Apart from their tasks the group was alsomonitored on their interaction with the pub-lic, their behaviour and punctuality.

Police in Delft continue to take their fightagainst crime seriously.
They are making strides in the recoveryof drugs and attribute this to the fosteringof stronger ties with the community.
Last week Delft police arrested a well-known drug dealer in their area in possessi-
on of a huge amount of tik. The arrest follo-wed after members of the Delft Crime Pre-vention Unit, who were busy with vehiclepatrol duties, spotted a black Corsa deliveryvehicle with tinted windows.
When they stopped the vehicle in LimpopoStreet, Eindhoven, they searched the 30-ye-
ar-old suspect and found 1 150 tik straws and400 sachets of tik with an estimated street va-lue of R50 000 in a plastic bag, in his possessi-on.
The suspect was arrested and will appearin the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on a char-ge of dealing in drugs.

Daniel Arendse is a young manwith a dream to check crime inhis community through chess.
He has started the Bishop LavisChess Club that operates from ta-bles set up in his backyard, but ithas not stopped them fromwinningmost of their games.He said that he has always had a
passion for the game and could notget the club off the ground formanyyears.“Money has always been one of
the major reasons,” he says.“And, it still is, but this year I
could not get it out of my mind toencourage children to start playing,and I just plunged right into it.“I have enrolled two teams into
the league that play at WittebomeCivic Centre every thursday night,and in ourmost recent matches ourA-team won 5-0 and our B-team 4-0(one match ended in stalemate).“This proves that we have talent
in the sport in our communities,and I would like to introduce the
sport to more youth in the area.”While Arendse’s passion is en-
riching the lives of the players it isputting him out of pocket becausehe has to fund the trips to Witte-bome for the league games everyweek.“It is getting a bit tough forme be-
cause I have to pay for the petrol toget us to the games every week, andthere is no other source of income.“I would like somebody or a busi-
