Police in Bishop Lavis have been gain-ing ground in the battle against crime.

On different occasions over the past fewweeks they have been leaving no stone un-turned when it comes to crime prevention. They confiscated 140 packets of tik and

10g of the drug was found in a house in As-segaai Road, Bonteheuwel and a suspectwas arrested. There was also a search warrant execut-

ed at a second-handdealer shop inBontehe-uwel where copper cables with an estimat-ed value of R10 000 were confiscated.Detectives at the station have also been

doing some good work leading to convic-tions.During operations in the area by Det/

Const Ettiene Lerm, after Const More Len-nox and Const Jan Marais searched a mo-tor vehicle they found a firearm with onemagazine, that was reported stolen inGrassy Park. They then arrested Shane Grant Jeffries

(24) from Hester Street, Valhalla Park.Lerm’s follow-up investigations have led

to Jeffries getting a seven-year sentence re-cently.This detective’s dedication to his job also

helped in another incident that happenedin 2010.In that incident Constables Fernando

Hayes andVuyoDyantyi followed up infor-mation given by a member of the public ata church in Leadwood Street, Bonteheuw-el.A suspect was reported hiding behind

the door inside the church. When policesearched the man they found a 9mm Tau-rus pistol with 15 rounds in his possession. They then arrested Mustapha Hen-

dricks, then 19, fromPampas Street, Bonte-heuwel who was recently sentenced to sev-en years’ imprisonment for possession ofan unlicensed gun and ammunition.

. Police are also looking for help in con-nection with cases in the area.On Tuesday 3 July at about 14:00 police

found the body of an unknown man, ap-proximately 45 years old, on open field be-hind Shoprite Centre, Charlesville. The deceased, who died of natural caus-

es, was dressed in brown pants, black andred jacket, grey socks with one black tak-kie.Contact the investigating officer, Detec-

tive Warrant Officer Pierre Bothma on 021935 9802/3.

.They are also needing your help in con-nection with a murder that happened onWednesday 4 April. At about 5:35 the policewere busy with patrols when they werecalled out to a murder scene in the alley inSoetdoring Road, Bonteheuwel. On arrival they found the body of a un-

knownmanwhowas dressed in a red checktop and blue jeans with black shoes. Con-tact the investigating officer, Det Const Jo-hannes Baard on 021 935 9826/21.

. In another incident on Wednesday 20Juneat approximately 19:24 thepolicewerecalled out to an incident next to the railwayline between Langa Railway Station andBishop Lavis Railway Station. At the scene they found a man that was

badly assaulted, the victim was taken tohospital, wherehe later died of his injuries. The police took fingerprints and accordingto records the fingerprints belongs toFarack Petersen.Contact Detective Warrant Officer

. From page 1.“I amdoingmybest to expose those talents

with the programme Talents in Action onCape TownTV, but I cannot do it onmy own.“My inspiration came when I was a bit

younger and went to the recreation centreto play sport and take part in other activi-ties. Today I can live out my talent and helpothers to reach their dreams and discovertheir potential. “My message to the youth isthat they must follow their dreams and be-come successful so that our younger genera-tion can look up to them.”Yendor Adonis is a passionate cultural ac-

tivist who feels people have forgotten thecultural legacy of the past that existed incommunities across the Cape Flats.“TheCapeFlats has been turned into a cul-

tural wasteland,” he said.“There are virtually no venues wheremu-

sicians can sourcework.Writers, poets, filmmakers and those who have support skillsacross the board like sound engineers haveno organised industry to channel their ef-forts.“National radio and television has been

hijacked by commercialism and the state, and only serves its already-emphasised nar-row interest, which means that much of thecultural product from the ‘Flats’ has no co-herent and funded testing or marketing ar-ea.“The power of foreign companies like

Sony andEMImean that theyhave anunfairadvantage over localmarketing abilities, be-cause they can buy needle-time on radio,broadcast-time on television and can affordthemorepopular and effective options in theprint media.”Adonis also feels that through music

many of our children are force-fed negativerole models while local musicians are notgiven the chance to inspire our youth.“Musicians from the ‘Flats’ have very lit-

tle support in the electronicmediawhere thelistening public are still force-fed a diet of

importedmusic, while localmusic is regard-ed as inferior.“This situation is far more ominous than

the glitz and glamour suggests. The aggres-sive marketing of foreign cultural forms isdesigned to neutralise local projects as com-petition and this intention should be under-stood more thoroughly, because it formspart of the deluge of attacks on our abilityto construct a local identity.”On the visual side of things he feels that

Hollywood cannot and does not tell our sto-ries.“We are the ones who should do that,” he

says.“American music forms are fantastic, but

so are our rhythms, chord progressions andthe stories we tell with them.“Radio, television and the local print me-

dia should be willing partners in establish-ing a local cultural stronghold. Our strong-est support should come from our own peo-ple.“Another missing partner in the dilemma

is our national government. Its distorted useof the national population demographicmeans that funding for projects are raciallymanipulated to support mainly those of in-terest to, or connected to the state and thatwhich promotes the survival of those whodominate our economy.”He also looked to parents who must as-

sume control of their children’s educationand ensure that their neighbourhoods arefree from gang activity and drug trafficking.“I am not promoting vigilantism, but we

need to take control of our environment tothe extent that crime and corruption find itimpossible to thrive.“The low standards introduced into gov-

ernment schools are a major concern if weconsider the fact that we do compete at a glo-bal level, no matter what we do.“Low educational standards set us up for

failure, but our challenge is: there’s littleemployment, but plenty of work.”

Children in Bonteheuwel are packingaway their PlayStations this weekend –and shining up their goene.

While the slightly older generation in thecommunity’s eyes will light up with the localnames for different types of marbles like iro-nies, soudies, and tamaties, it seems like anew generation is learning the game with anexciting initiative in the community.

A young man in Bonteheuwel wants tobring back those carefree days of youth play-ing safely in the outdoors before X-Boxes andNintendo kept them glued to a TV or compu-ter screen.

Dean Jates has started the DLJ 100% Hu-man Project, and in partnership with Um-bon’omhle Youth Development Organisa-tion, will be hosting the seconnd Gattie/Mar-ble competition in Bonteheuwel and Langa.

Jates said that this is the second time thata similar event is held.

“Last year we started with somethingsmall just for the Bonteheuwel area and itwas very successful,” he said.

“This year’s competition the battle will in-clude players from Langa, and we are hopingthat it will spread wider.

“The competitions will start this Saturdayat the Thusong Centre in Bonteheuwel, andthen alternate with a site in Noxolo Street,Langa, for the next three weeks.”

Jates, also an accomplished film maker, revealed that his plan for the children of thecommunity was to give them an insight intohow games like marbles, playing with a top, kennetjie, and klippetjies (five stones) can bepart of their learning experience.

“It’s time that they get away from those TVscreens and become active in games likethese, because they are learning about thelegacies and culture of their own communi-ties.

“These events will also be used as a show-case for some of the musical talents that wehave within the community so there will belots of entertainment during breaks in thecompetitions. We will also be filming.”

The Thusong Service Centre is on the cor-ner of Jakkalsvlei and Elder Streets in Bon-teheuwel and the activities start at 09.30.

Due to the nature of the competition beingan outdoor sport, the dates of the competiti-on can be affected by weather conditions. Ifthe weather is not favourable the events willbe pushed to the following weekends.

For more information about the event Ja-tes can be contacted on 074 658 5539 or [email protected].

The Bonteheuwel Ladies Walking and Fit-ness club celebrated its fifth anniversary, and is still striding ahead. While they gathered at the Bonteheuwel

Community Hall recently to celebrate thismilestone, the founder and chairperson,SorayaSalie, recalledhow that journeybe-gan.She recalled that she had suffered from

bad health for a long time starting with anemergency hysterectomy due to cancerwhen she was 27.“It came back after a few years on my

ovaries and then stayed dormant for a fewyears. During 2005 a tumour was discov-ered on my brain and I had to have sur-gery, but could only put my trust in myCreator to guide the hands of the surgeons.Thank God it was a success, although theycould not remove everything.“Then in 2006 I developed a tumour on

my colonwhich continued coming back af-ter every surgery, in a short space of time.

This left my doctor baffled, so he decidedthat there was no more hope for me, andthis was very painful to accept.”She recalls that she was very disheart-

ened when she got home after this newsbut realised that God would have a mes-sage for her.“I opened my Quran at randomwith the

intention that God must guide me to averse that will uplift my spirit.“This is what I found: never give up

Literacy is growing in schools as an excit-ing competition gets into the final stages.

A total of 60 000 Grade 4 to 7 learners from168 schools have participated in the first levelof Growsmart, an exciting literacy competi-tion designed to support theWestern Cape Ed-ucation Department’s (WCED) strategy to im-prove literacy at primary school level. Some 28 schools, each with a team of three

learners, qualified for Level 2 of the competi-tion that takes place during this month.“Schools from the four different education

districts will be competing in Level 2 at SpineRoad School inMitchells Plain on 4 and 18 Au-gust for a sought-after place in the final,” ex-plains Jewel Harris, assistant regional man-ager at Growthpoint Properties and Grows-mart spokesperson.“The schools qualified following their par-

There are fantas-tic prizes up for grabs: thewinning school willreceive improvements to their premises to thevalue ofR200 000 and thewinning learnerswilleach receive financial assistance worth R20000 towards their future education.”Harris added that the competition is about

so much more than literacy.“It’s a terrific confidence booster for the par-

We used theprizemoney to buybooks to add to our library, build a computer centre for the kids, build aschool hall, add interactive whiteboards intothe classrooms, and construct a pre-schoolplaypark with a jungle gym. This really wenta long way to making life better for our learn-ers,” says Magda Esterhuizen, principal ofBeacon View Primary School in MitchellsPlain.Parents, families and communities are en-

An out-of control house party in-spired by the cult movie Project Xand attended by about 1 000 youths, recently caused pandemonium in aquiet street in Northpine, Kraai-fontein.After a night of chaos and noise,

nearby residents were shocked andoutraged by this new youth fad, andfear that more parties of this kindare in the pipeline. The City of Cape Town, however,

has investigated the incident andwarned youngsters that they will

remain on high alert in case of an-other party in the area.Project X, a comedy film released

inMarch this year, is based ona sto-ry of three friends who plan to gainpopularity by throwing a huge par-ty.In the movie, word of the party

however spreads like wildfire andvery soon it escalates out of theircontrol when hundreds of party-goers fromaround the city arrive atthe house with hair-raising conse-quences.In Cape Town, this movement

very quickly gained a big following

with youths attempting to see whocan create the biggest house party, says Grant Twigg, chairman of theBergdal subcouncil and adds thatnaturally every by-law in the bookwas broken. The invitation which was circu-

lated by email and SMS reads as fol-lows: “Tonight will be epic night toremember. If your up for a ProjectX , .................., Northpine, Bracken-fell, is where youwant to be tonightbtwn 8 and 9.. Over enough parkingfor everyone..bring your friends, and their friends and their friendsfriends.somenigga’swithmorenig-

ga’s who know nigga’s. Bring ownXYZ and other stuff...keep the bc go-ing..so far so good!! ..its a night ofpartying and nontheless *beer*”.“According to our knowledge

news of this party spread across thecity very quickly and young peoplefrom all over arrived in hordes. They ended up partying in thestreet, jamming every single drive-way and blocking traffic. The parkin the street was also used, and eve-rywhere open cars were blaringloud music with youths drinkingand dancing. The next day hun-dreds of bottles were left strewn in

the streets and parks,” he says andadds that the parents of the youthswas out of town over that weekendand not aware of the party.Twigg is adamant that this type

of behaviour is unacceptable in aresidential suburb and last weektold TygerBurger that the city willpull out all the stops to ensure thatthis does not happen again.“I am constantly being updated

with new information of parties be-ing planned. If and when this hap-pens in our area again, we will ar-rest and lock them all up,” hewarned.

The Afrika Ablaze Dance Company is get-ting ready to light up the Baxter stage oncemore. For the past 10 years they haveworked re-

lentlessly at helping children, specificallythose from disadvantaged backgrounds, totransform their lives through the mediumof dance, drama and music.Highly acclaimed choreographer and

dance teacher, Glenda Jones, founder andowner of AfrikaAblaze has been instrumen-tal in developing young dancers into well-seasoned performers, who to date havegraced the stages of Artscape, The CTICC,The Baxter and TheNational GrahamstownArts Festival.Their latest production, I Am Dance, is a

celebration of pure passion, inspiration, dedication, natural talent, unbridled energy

and glorious creativity.Afrika Ablaze is renowned for transcend-

ing the boundaries of conventional dance. The cast of 50 young performers have con-

tributed to the choreographic content of theshow and this, Jones claims, is why it willsurprise audiences and lovers of dance. Bal-let, hip-hop, contemporary, African jazz, cabaret and kwaito form part of this boldand innovative show.I AmDance delves into the heart of a danc-

er and aims to unveilwhy dance has and canbecome a home for many who search for ac-ceptance, love and happiness. It starts at the Baxter tonight and runs un-

til 4 August. There will be two performances of the

The streets of Bellville andParow will soon be cleaner andsafer, with the official launch ofthe Voortrekker Road CorridorImprovement District (VRCID)today 1 August.

Derek Bock, chief operations of-ficer of the VRCID, says all plansare in place to tackle crime andgrime head-on.As from today, VRCID levy pay-

ers will be able to contact a securityoperations control room with anysecurity concerns 24 hours a day on072 792 7168.Cape Town’s newest and largest

city improvement district will de-ploy additional cleansing teamsand private security officers withinthe VRCID, mainly along Voor-trekker and Durban Roads.A total of 100 jobs are createdwith

the launch of the VRCID. The day-time, night time and reserve guardsall received specialist training insecurity and cleansing. The VRCIDwill deploy sevenmo-

bile patrol vehicles and 20 security

officers, all clearly branded – sevendays aweek, 24 hours a day. Privatesecurity service provider Orbis Se-curity will also man a 24-hour, sev-en-days-a-week VRCID security op-erations control centre. The VRCID is part of theMayoral

Urban Regeneration Programme oftheCity of CapeTown, led byMayorPatricia de Lille.“It is very important to remem-

ber the VRCID, like all CIDs onlyprovides top up services, over andabove that which the city must sup-ply in terms of urban manage-ment,” said Bock. He said the CIDwas not there to take over the city’sservices.Via its cleansing service provid-

er, the VRCID appointed an addi-tional 15 street cleaners per day,who will sweep and clean thestreets and collect illegal dumping. The VRCID will also coordinatetheir cleansing operations with thecity so as to maximise all staff. In terms of the powers of arrest,

VRCID security officers, like mem-bers of the public, can execute a citi-

zen’s arrest.“If our security officers arrest a

person for theft as an example, pa-trol vehicleswill respond to the spe-cific incident and transport the of-fender to a police station forprocessing,” said Bock.He said this was a clear example

of how the VRCID will support thepolice and how theywished toworkwith them.Bock said he would foster rela-

tions with non-governmental or-ganisationsworkingwithin theVR-CID to address the issue of home-lessness as this goes hand in handwith security.“Homelessness is not a crime but

being homeless does not give anyperson the right to aggressively begor harassmembers of the public, lit-ter or urinate on the streets,” saidBock.“I make an urgent appeal to all

members of the public to please stopgiving to those who beg on thestreets, by giving cash, food or evenclothing – you are responsible forkeeping them on the streets,” he

said.. The 24-hour control room can

DESIREÉ RORKE

After seven torturous years ofenduring the hellish conse-quences of drug abuse by bothher children, Susan Esterhuizenof Kraaifontein did the unthink-able.

Susan’s two childrenwere only 13and 15 when they started abusingdrugs, and at a very young ageweresent toNoupoort, the first of a seriesof rehabilitation centres. Theyspent 52 months there.“It was a good resting period for

me and I was at peace to know thatat least my children were in a safeplace,” she says.“But after they were released,

things got worse. I tried everythingI could to helpmy children but it allseemed in vain.”After yet another spate in rehab,

again both her children chosedrugs, and consequently moved outof her house to live with other fami-ly members.“At this point they told the world

that I didn’t care, and I didn’t wantthem any more. But this was far re-moved from the truth.“Children who abuse drugs are

out to manipulate their parents, and for a very long time I felt guilt-ridden and emotionally drained. Itried to analyse events to findwhere I went wrong as a parent. Ifelt ashamed of myself.”

As the years passed by both herchildren refused any help and con-tinued theirhabit at the cost of theirfamily life.“My son was involved with car

theft and was charged with the pos-session of a stolen vehicle and spentsix months in custody at GoodwoodPrison. I spent a lot of money to get

him off and save him from a seven-year prison term,” she says.Instead he received a sentence of

two years under house arrest andSusan hoped that he would finallyfind his way.But soon temptation again gave

way and with the help of the prisonwelfare system her son was placed

inDeNovo rehabilitation centre forseven weeks.“When he came out he looked so

good and I was overjoyed. At lastone of my children could be savedfrom the clutches of drugs,” shesays. But again her hopeswere dashed.“This timehewent and livedwith

his long-time girlfriend and theirtwo beautiful children, but verysoon she senthim tomeas she couldnot cope with his drug habits anymore.“Drug addictswill steal fromany-

one to satisfy their craving. Theybecome aggressive and violent andit does not matter what their lovedones do to try and help them it is allfor nothing,” she says.Meanwhile, her daughter also

moved back to her, and between thetwo children they sold almost eve-rything of value in her house. The pressure was mounting and

after a year, which Susan describesof one of the worst of her life, shewas finally forced to resign fromher employment, due to stress.“I could not face life any more, it

was all becoming toomuch forme,”she says. One morning when Susan real-

ised she did not even have moneyleft for food and was facing a realpossibility of losing her house, shedecided enough was enough. With the help of her local police

station she went to the Kuils River

court and applied for a domestic vi-olence interdict against both herchildren.A domestic violence interdict,

otherwise knownas a protection or-der, can be obtained in a magis-trate’s court, free of charge. The abuse mentioned above can

take the form of verbal, physical, fi-nancial or emotional or psychologi-cal abuse and must involve a mem-ber of the household.Once a party is in possession of

such an interdict the police can in-tervene and lock someone up incase of a domestic argument.“After I received it, I warned

them. But two months ago mydaughter again stole something ofmine and I laid a charge againsther. The police caught her withMandrax the next day and she wassent to Pollsmoor..”At the same time her son contin-

uedwithhis abuse andSusandecid-ed to lay a charge against him aswell and he too was sent to prison.“The day had arrived when the

heart of a mother was turned tostone. I realised that I had to dosomething to protectmyself, and re-fused to withdraw the chargesagainst them. My aim is to reachout to communities to face the fastgrowing Third World War – that ofdrug abuse.”Contact Susan to get involved

with her ministry on 078 6744 353 [email protected].

The 14-year-old boy’s frightenedeyes desperately look for comfort. He first notices the inviting

couches and the homely coffee tableonhis left and thena faint smile per-meates through his despair whenhe spots a grand bookshelf stuffedwith age-old knowledge on hisright. For a second the boywants to lose

himself in the books, but he is urgedto follow the group of people mull-ing about him.Everyone apart from his parents

gives him friendly and supportiveglances. He is told that the South African

Children’s Home was the first of itskind in the country, having beenstarted by Margaretha Möller in

1808.There is a growing feeling of hope

for the boy. Besides the warm glowof the staff, every time he staresthrough the window he is comfort-ed by the ever-present Table Moun-tain shepherding him.The group is takenona tour of the

whole facility, which includes adining room, a kitchen, bedroomsand studies. There is even a swim-ming pool, a soccer field and a cou-ple of big screen televisions! He is, however, told that thehome

values reading and sport considera-bly more than watching television. In another room, Sandra Collins,

talks to TygerBurger about thehome, which is registered to accom-modate 44 children between the ag-es of six and 18 years. She has been the manager for six

years, but has been involved withthe home for close to 30 years.“We assess and evaluate each

child individually and then placethem in a school in and aroundCape Town,” she explains. The misperception that children

live indefinitely in a children’shome must be changed, especiallysince the Child Care Act wasamended recently.“Children come here in accord-

ancewitha court order for a shorterperiod and in that time we willwork intensely with the family oforigin. Our focus falls on family re-unification,” continues Collins. If the family set-up isn’t function-

ing properly and the child isn’t ina safe environment then a socialworker will recommend to thecourts to temporarily remove the

child from the family’s care.“We have 12 staff memberswhich

includes a full-time social worker,a fundraiser, an admin person, sev-en child care workers and a chiefchild care worker. We are also veryfortunate to have a multi profes-sional team of volunteers consist-ing of a child psychiatrist, an educa-tional psychologist, occupationaltherapist, an educationalist and amedical doctor.” Meanwhile, some-thing remarkable happened at theend of the tour for the 14-year-oldboy.A visibly enchanted and content-

ed old man walked into the homewith two young children by hisside. As it turned out they were his

grandchildren, whom he wanted toshow where he himself grew up so

many years ago. The 14-year-oldboy blossoms. If anyone would liketo help the SA Children’s Homethey can contact them on021 423 1328 or go to www.sakinder-huis.org.

On 1 September Sanlam andTygerBurgerwill be organisinga “Women’s Day” fundraiserfor the home at Hillcrest inDurbanville. The festivemorn-ing will see various speakerssuch as Dr Wolfgang Riebe de-livering motivational talks. Alight lunch and a giant gluten-free chocolate cakewill alsobeon the menu. Bookings can bemade with Sanlam Client Con-tact Centre’s Melinda Preto-rius at 021 916 6191.

Home from home gives kids new self beliefAt the SA Children's Home, the children always come first. Outdoor activities are high up on the list of priorities for the children.

SAREL BURGER

in aksie was, is 35-25 deur dieVictoriane geklop.

Medal pride: Western Province amateur wrestlers recently represented South Africa in the Africa Championships held in Madgascar.Back from left: Gabriel Nel (gold) Hein Janse Van Rensburg (silver).Front: Clinton Hein (fourth), Cameron Nel (gold) and Eshwin Klaasen(bronze).

It runs in the family: Suzanne de Waal (middle) and her twochildren Jeanluc and Kayla (both Kenridge Primary) recently represented Western Province in the South African Biathle championshipsheld in Bloemfontein. Biathle is a sport where the athlete competesin a runswimrun combination. Suzanne andKaylawill represent SouthAfrica in Dubai on 3 November.

Central will look to push Kraaifontein Citycloser to relegation from the Northern Sub-urbsLocal Football Association SuperLeaguewhen the teams meet at Symphony Park inBelhar on Sunday afternoon, kick-off at 14:00.Central come into the game with a win over

Kalksteenfontein on Saturday, but a three-match unbeaten streak prior to that victorydemonstrates that Giles Julies’ side are ingood nick as far as form is concerned. That is not something one can say about

Kraaifontein City, who look destined to fall

through the trapdoor and be relegated to thelower division. They are second last on the league stand-

ings, three points adrift of Wayside Wander-erswho are bottom on the logwith five points, and a further four from from 14th place occu-pied by United.Bellstar United, who looked in danger of be-

ing dragged into the relegation mire at onestage this season, have all but secured theirtop flight status for next season thanks to a16 point buffer to the danger zone.Belhar Spurs will look to get back to win-

ning ways when they host Trinitarians at

Symphony Park. kick-off at 15:30.The Erica Park side put together a string of

three straight wins from June into early Julythat lifted them out of the danger zone at thebottom of the table, but taking just one pointfrom their last two outings means they arestill verymuch in danger of being drawn backinto the bottom two. They narrowly lost away to log leaders Riv-

erside Rangers at Avonwood Park. Now theywill look to draw on the determination theyshowed in that game in order to overcomeTrinitarians, a team that is in good form.Trinitarians are placed fifth.

It’s been a long and bumpy roadfor Renette Bloem but a dreamcome true to represent South Af-rica on the grandest stage of themall – the Paralympic Games inLondon. The blind 48-year-old from

Brackenfell believes she has a re-alistic chance tomake the final ofhermain and favourite event, the100m breaststroke. The Paralympic Games run

from 29 August to 9 September atthe same venues as the OlympicGames already in full swing.South Africa can only take five

men and five women swimmers.“I’ve always had a love for wa-

ter and started swimming atschool. I lost interest for a whileand did some serious road run-ning. I like the 10km to 21kmrange of races.“In 2007 I was back in the pool

and haven’t looked back since.”At the World Championships

in 2010 held in Holland, Bloemmade the finals of the 100mbreaststroke placing fourth, showing she can compete withthe best on the planet.Last year Turkey hosted the In-

ternational Blind Sport Federa-tion Championships where Blo-em won silver. She also beat Na-

talie du Toit earlier this year inDurban in the 100m breaststroke, winning Gold.“It’s been very tough, at 48 you

have tomanage your body and beaware not to over-train. Current-ly I practise six days a week fortwo to three hours a day. I wakeup at 04:00 to be in the pool by05:00.“Luckily the gym is basically

across the road for me. Some-times I go through to Stellen-bosch as they have a startingblock that is the same as we willuse in London.“I don’t believe I am a given

medallist, but if one is in a final, anything can happen. In 2010 I setthe South African record in the100 Breaststroke at 1.38.67. Myother races are the 50m and 100mfreestyle and 200m individualmedley.“This will be my last competi-

tive championships, so I will giveit my absolute best to end on ahigh. Although I am very focusedon the job at hand, I can’t wait toget homeafter theGamesand justlead a normal life.“Preparing for the Paralym-

pics takes over your whole life,”said Bloem.Few people know that Bloem is

family of the Olympic medallistRyk Neethling. Renette Bloem is hopeful of a medal at the Paralympic Games.
