He says everybody is up in arms about Richwood and fear of crime plays a huge role. “The reality is this is a small group of cri- minals and we know who they are,” he says. “We have crime prevention operations in collaboration with the neighbourhood watch and security companies. We are max- imising visibility in Richwood, but we must also change the mindset of the people, chan- ge the fear of crime.” According to him the upsurge of crime in any area is influenced by external factors such as prisoners who are on parole, cases that are withdrawn, suspects out on bail and cases that are thrown out on technicalities. There’s sadness in cycling circles withnews that Jeanné Nell, crashed and diedat the Bellville Velodrome last Tuesdaynight.
Nell (30), the South African champion inkeirin track cycling, from Richwood inGoodwood, was taking part in the firstleague track race for the season when hefell on the last turn.
According to Johan Smit, organiser ofthe event and national track director, Nellwas riding at 75 km/h when he fell.
He said an ambulance was on stand-bywhen the accident happened and ER24 wason the scene within minutes.
Paramedics tried to stabilise Nell for 45minutes before he was taken to N1 Cityhospital, where he died of brain injuriesin the early hours of the following morn-ing.
Nell was a member of team Intellibusand was preparing for the coming Com-monwealth Games.
He took part in a recent World Cup eventin Manchester and came second in theGrand Prix tournament in Sydney lastyear.
Smit says Nell was a humble person anda widely respected and loved sportsman.He says his team-mates are receiving trau-ma treatment for shock.

The Riverton Estate Residents Associationin Elsies River means business when theysay they want to keep their neighbourhoodclean from crime – and they’re startingwith grime!
They were established to uplift, uniteand secure the community of Riverton Es-tate with the aim to eradicate crime bystanding together in partnership with thelocal Community Police Forum, SAPS, citycouncil and other institutions and organi-sations operating in the community.
On Saturday they took their fight to thestreets and gathered at Vasco Station toge-ther with Metrorail and some local council-lors to clean up the area around the station.
“Criminals hate clean places, thereforethey thrive in filthy communities and inmessy spaces in neighbourhoods,” sayschairman of the organisation, Steve Ross.
“Filthy places sends out a message thatno one cares and no one is watching overthe area. We can totally disrupt their opera-tions by ensuring our community is clean.
“This is the very reason why Vasco Stati-on is a drug dealers haven. It’s because theplace is so filthy.
“Operation Restore Pride is our initiati-ve to systematically clean every inch of ourcommunity, especially the major areaswhere illegal dumping is prevalent.
“Working together we as residents cancome together and clean up our area, there-by sending a message to criminals thatthey are not welcome in Riverton Estate.”
Ross also encourages all residents to ta-ke part in crime-fighting by alerting the po-lice and neighbourhood watch of any suspi-cious or illegal activity.
“You too can contribute to the above, bybeing vigilant, by joining the NHW patrols,by adding your name to the CommunityWhatsapp Group and by your financialcontribution to our organisation.
“We can and should determine the quali-ty of life we desire to have in our communi-ty.

South African icon, PJ Pow-ers, is showing fans anoth-er side in her new produc-
tion, Firefly, currently on at theRoxy Review Bar.“In order to see your firefly,
there has to be darkness,” PJsays, explaining the name of theproduction.“I’m a recovering alcoholic,”
she goes on, explaining that thealcoholism took her to rock bot-tom.“It was in that blackness that
I saw my firefly.”Her addiction is one of the
very personal parts of her jour-ney that PJ explores in her inti-mate new show.“Cape Town is an area that I
haven’t exposed myself to for acouple of years and the RoxyTheatre is a fabulous theatre,”PJ says of her decision to stagethe show in Cape Town.“Also I am very nervous of
smaller audiences,” she says,adding: “A sea of 10 000 peopleis much more comfortable forme. “

PJ also discovered a comedi-an in herself along the way. “Iwanted to be able to tell some ofthe stories that I have,” shesays, adding that there are somethings that have happened inher life that are “extremely fun-ny”.

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar by diemunisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte vaneiendomme wat op die SV03-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV03-waardasies inkennis gestel word by die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is.
Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ’n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ’n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verbandmoet hou en nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie.
