Die drama het begin toe ’n polisieman, wat ’n motor sou gaan koop het, van die bank deur mans agtervolg is. Die polisieman, wat van diens was, het ’n groot bedrag kontant by die bank gaan onttrek en die twee vermeende ka- pers het hom van die bank agtervolg tot by die verkoper van die motor se huis in Brantwood, Kuilsrivier. Die eienaar van die huis, waar die kaping plaasgevind het, het aan TygerBurger vertel hy het Saterdagoggend niksvermoedend uit sy huis gekom om sy motor uit die motorhuis te trek. Dit slag was hard, ek dink hy het dit met die gun toegekap.” Die man sê al wat deur sy kop gemaal het, was dat sy bejaarde pa nie uit die huis moet kom en dat die kapers nie daar moet ingaan nie. “Toe ek binne is, toe hoor ek die skote.” Dit is toe dat die kapers in die polisieman se motor geklim het nadat hulle hom van sy selfoon en kontant beroof het. Daar was ’n oor-en-weer- skietery tussen die polisieman en kapers. Die polisieman het na bewering een kaper gewond, wat veroorsaak het dat die kapers in ’n muur oorkant die eienaar se huis vasgejaag het. Een van die kapers het uitgespring en van die toneel gevlug. Die gewonde een is deur die polisie in- hegtenis geneem. Ao. November Philander, woordvoerder van die provinsiale polisie, het bevestig die voorval het plaasgevind en dat die ondersoek voortduur. Dié waarskuwing volg nadat’n man verlede week van deur totdeur in die Parow-gebied gestapen beweer het die geld gaan virdie begrafnis van ’n meisie waar-oor in die TygerBurger berig is.
Soortgelyke voorvalle is ook alin die verlede by TygerBurgeraangemeld.

Kha Ri Gude Let us Learn educational pro-gramme, to be presented in Kalkfontein. Shesays the classes are presented at no cost andlearners receive class modules, stationeryand all other materials needed to learn.“This is a literacy campaign in South Afri-
ca and there is no age restriction for peopleto enrol for the classes.”The new intake date is now and people are
encouraged to come and sign up for thelearning classes. Simpamla says the classeswill run over the course of six months, forthree hours and three days a week.“It will be in the students’ mother lan-
guage and I want those who want to use theopportunity for free to join. People are notaware of it and we don’t want to hide this op-portunity.”According to information on the depart-

says the funds raised at this golf daywill be applied towards the develop-ment of an athletic track at theschool.She says sport is such an impor-

The immense excitement was tangibleamongst members of the Mission Teamconsisting ofmembers from the Enon Tab-ernacle Baptist Church and Teen Chal-lenge at a meeting last week.
TheMission Teammet for final discussionson their mission trip to the United States ofAmerica.The team will be leaving on Thursday 2 Au-
gust for their two-week long trip.Past Jacobus Nomdoe, of the church and di-
rector of Teen Challenge South Africa said:“We are truly blessed beyond measure for theopportunity to undertake this trip. Each of usgoing on this trip should view it as an opportu-nity to create an opportunity.”Nomdoe says the purpose of the trip is to not
only to partake in com-munity work and minis-try, but also to exposethe mission team to newexperiences. “We wantto send the message thatthis opportunity is notonly for a selected few,but we looked at all agegroups and back-grounds, especially theyouth, as we want to ex-pose them to possiblestudy opportunities inAmerica.”He explains the Teen
Challenge “Be theTiger”drug awareness pro-gramme is the reasonthe group got invited.Plans include to pro-
vide training to Ameri-can community workersand educators in thisprogramme. Teen Chal-lenge, a drug rehabilita-tion centre and preven-
tion programme has developed this uniquelearning programme for teachers, in order forthem to identify children caught up in druguse. The programme has been presented atschools and prisons throughout South Africa.It will, however, not be all work and no play
for the team consisting of 36 people. The Mis-sion Team will visit tourist attractions andheritage sites including the White House inWashington DC, the Martin Luther Kingproject in Philadelphia, and Ground Zero inNew York.Nomdoe thanked the leadership of Enon
Tabernackle for funding the mission trip.Future plans include even bigger mission
trips. “In 2013 we hope to take 100 people onthis trip,” said Nomdoe.Mission Team members seemed overjoyed.

Giving a child a good learningfoundationwill create a favoura-ble setting for growth and devel-opment in future.
Early Childhood DevelopmentCentres (ECD) in the wards 11, 14,and 17 in Subcouncil 21, Kuils Riverreceived a donation from the sub-council by means of funding by lo-cal ward councillors, Wilma Brady,Jacob Jacobs and Bert van Dalen.
The funding made it possible forthe donation to ECDs in the threewards in order to boost their sup-plies and aid them in providing a fa-vourable learning environment forchildren to grow and learn at thiscrucial foundational stage.
Jeremy Lewis, community devel-oper, Social Development for Sub-council 21 says the donation wasmade to 27 ECDs, in Kuils River,Sarepta, Tuscany Glen, MalibuBlackheath, Kleinvlei, KalkfonteinandBlueDowns.NineECDs in eachward received donations. He saysthe ECDs were selected based ontheir needs. “We asked the chair-
person’s of each ECD forum in theirwards to identify the most needy
creches and we catered for themfirst, the ones with the greater
need.”The next donation he says will
take place during the last quarter ofthe year. The donation includedmuch-needed items including 10mattresses each, first aid kits, sta-tionery hamper and City of CapeTown work bag for ECD educators.
Yvonne Sipamla, Ward 11 forumrepresentative for Education,thanked the city for the donation.
“A big thanks to Jeremy Lewis,who played a big role in us gettingthese things,” a grateful Sipamlasaid.
The Early Childhood Develop-ment Committee in Kuils River,wants to extend an invitation to allECDs in Ward 11 to join them.
Yvonne Sipmamla, of the com-mittee said: “We are an interimcommittee and we want all ECDs inKuils River to come on board, espe-cially those in the CBD. We areplanning an AGM and a launch tointroduce the new committee to thepublic.” Sipamla thanked the localward councillors, of Subcouncil 21,Wilma Brady, Jacob Jacobs andBert van Dalen for their support inthe ward allocations.

Die Alta du Toit-skool in Kuilsrivier hetonlangs ’n broodnodige skenking van 30 bo-me ontvang van Combined Developers, ’n ei-endomsontwikkelingsmaatskappy wat ooklandskapering doen. Die leerlinge van dieskool het verlede Woensdag opgewonde bydie sportvelde gewag op die bome om afge-laai te word, sodat hulle kan begin plant.
Renier Kriek van Combined Developers sêdie Alta du Toit-skool is deur hulle geïdenti-fiseer as begunstigdes van hul maatskappyse boomplantprojek.
Hy verduidelik die maatskappy het van-jaar as deel van ’n groen inisiatief besluit omdie boomplantprojek te begin, waarin hullebome skenk in die gemeenskap waar hullewerksaam is. Hulle het vanjaar al 330 bomeby verskillende instansies geplant.
“Dit is die eerste keer dat ons aan die Alta
du Toit-skool bome skenk. Ons het gesienhulle het ’n groot boomnood en ons sal beslisvir hulle meer bring,” het Renier gesê.
Hy verduidelik die maatskappy het hulledaartoe verbind om vir elke 100 m² wat hulledoen, twee bome aan ’n instansie te skenk.
’n Baie beïndrukte Elsabe Hitchcock vandie Alta du Toit-skool het gesê daar is ’ngroot behoefte aan bome, want van die bomeby die skool is al amper 25 jaar oud.
Sy sê die skool benodig nog minstens 50tot 60 bome. Hitchcock sê daar gaan ook nogontwikkelings in die area kom, waarvan een’n nuwe pad is waarlangs hulle dan nog bo-me wil plant.
“Ons is bly oor die heerlike groot bome,”het Elsabe oor die skenking gesê.
Die Alta du Toit-skool bied onderrig aanintellektuele gestremde leerlinge en het tans350 leerlinge tussen die ouderdomme vanses en 18 jaar.

It is commendable that all the artists –the cream of the SouthAfricanmusic crop– performedwith absolutely no remunera-tion. All ticketmoneywent to the benefici-aries. All arrangements for the fabulousevent were taken care of by a variety ofsponsors. In the end more than R160 000was raised – because we can.
TygerBurger publishes so many storiesabout the activities, as well as needs of de-serving organisations. For the last 10years, however, we have also done our bitto help these organisations directly.
Through the annual Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert, we invest in thecommunity with which we do business.We hope to increase the visibility of theseorganisations each year, to make themmore visible for support from elsewhere.

Sy hethaar handsak in die trollie geplaas en verderalleen na die roltrap gestap.
Toe sy daar aankom, het sy die trappe ge-vat om by die motor te kom.
In diemotor het sy agtergekom haar hand-sak is weg.
Sy is dadelik weer af, maar in die trolliewas ook niks. Baie benoud en beangs het ek’n sekerheidsbeampte gekry.Hiermoet ek sy

As iemand net wilhelp, kan ons sonder stres ook winkel toegaan of na ander plekke waar daar ges-tremde-tekens is. Ek wil graag die Parow-mark gelukwens. With two singles and a new vid-eo just released, Cold HandChemistry are putting them-selves back on the radar.
The band have been quiet whileworking on their debut album, butDavid Benzaquen, the band’s key-boardist and percussionist as-sures: “We are never gone fromwhat we are doing.”When TygerBurger first fea-
tured the band about two yearsago, they had just gone through aline-up change. Dave is joined inthe band by Chantel Smit on vo-cals, Donovan Laughton on gui-tar, Robert Fick on drums and Ge-off Gunn on bass.Dave says their priority at the
time was to bring the new mem-bers up to speed.“That meant that we had to
change stylistically as well,” hesays, pointing out that there were new in-fluences and styles in the band.Chantel says this process saw theirmusic
becomingmoreaccessible. “Weareactuallymore versatile than we thought,” she says.Dave says that without the luxury of
evolving over albums, they found their ex-isting material evolve.“We did it in one album,” Chantel offers,
adding: “We are starting to paint more onthe canvas than we used to, using differentcolours.”
Just because they are using coloursthough, doesn’t mean that Cold Hand ha-ven’t retained their dark qualities.“You don’t have to be heavy to be dark,”

It’s been a long and bumpy road for RenetteBloem but a dream come true to representSouth Africa on the grandest stage of themall – the Paralympic Games in London.The blind 48-year-old from Brackenfell be-
lieves she has a realistic chance to make thefinal of her main and favourite event, the100m breaststroke.The Paralympic Games run from 29 Au-
gust to 9 September at the same venues asthe Olympic Games already in full swing.South Africa can only take five men and
five women swimmers.“I’ve always had a love forwater and start-
ed swimming at school. I lost interest for awhile and did some serious road running. Ilike the 10km to 21km range of races.“In 2007 I was back in the pool and haven’t
looked back since.”At the World Championships in 2010 held
in Holland, Bloem made the finals of the100m breaststroke placing fourth, showingshe can compete with the best on the planet.Last year Turkey hosted the International
Blind Sport Federation Championships
where Bloem won silver. She also beat Na-talie du Toit earlier this year in Durban inthe 100m breaststroke, winning Gold.“It’s been very tough, at 48 you have to
manage your body and be aware not to over-train. Currently I practise six days a weekfor two to three hours a day. I wake up at04:00 to be in the pool by 05:00.“Luckily the gym is basically across the
road for me. Sometimes I go through to Stel-lenbosch as they have a starting block thatis the same as we will use in London.“I don’t believe I am a givenmedallist, but
if one is in a final, anything can happen. In2010 I set the South African record in the 100breaststroke at 1.38.67. My other races arethe 50mand100m freestyle and 200m individ-ual medley.“This will be my last competitive champi-
onships, so I will give it my absolute best toend on a high. Although I am very focusedon the job at hand, I can’t wait to get homeafter the Games and just lead a normal life.“Preparing for the Paralympics takes over
your whole life,” said Bloem.Few people know that Bloem is family of
the Olympic medallist Ryk Neethling.
