T
ygerberg hospital never sleeps, but be-
tween 9 and 13 November ward G3 of
this hospital became a hub of activity
as 43 little patients with facial anomalies
were treated here as part of Smile Week.
Two doctors, Professor FrankGraewe and
Dr Alexander Zhlke and their plastic and
reconstructive surgical team used two thea-
tres and the staff of ward G3 to make this
happen, while the Smile Foundation filled
the gaps and took care of all the needs that
arose around this group of patients.
The Smile Foundation, an NGO that was
founded in 2000, has a memorandum with
eight academic hospitals in South Africa.
And although they support the hospitals
throughout the year, for one week per year
their efforts at each hospital are concentrat-
ed into those seven days.
We get donors on board, support the chil-
dren with their transport, help source the
necessary equipment for their operations
and offer services such as speech therapy,
occupational therapy and psychology for
parents and patients so that they are more
relaxed before surgery, says Moira Gertsz,
operations executive director at the Smile
Foundation.
She says Smile does not only make things
easier for the patients, their families
and doctors, they also work hard to
create an awareness about facial
anomalies in children.
There are somany children in
this region needing corrective
surgery, and it will be very grati-
fying for us to see them having these
needed operations, she says.
Currently one in 750 SouthAfrican chil-
dren is born with a facial anomaly.
We aremindful of the needs of the hos-
pital, we acknowledge the challenges of
each hospital and the different communities
they serve.
We have to balance the donors expecta-
tions. But in the end Smile is all about the
kids.
Wedonot charge their families anything.
Those who qualify to be helped are those
without medical aid who are patients at the
hospital, as well as some patients who are
referred through us, says Gertsz.

According toDoreenKosi ofAdcock Ingram,
who sponsored this week, Smile Week is
their flagship project. We are guided by
Smile and we follow their strategy. We want
to add value.
One of the patients who received plastic
surgery is Ilke Moses (11) from Paarl, wholl
have her smile back in a week or so after
post-operative swelling has disappeared.
Ilke suffered facial paralysiswhenshewas
fiveyears oldbecauseof abacterial infection
inher ear. In aprior operation, anewmuscle
was constructed in Ilkes cheek, but themus-
cle sagged, skewing her face. This has now
been corrected.
It helped to meet other parents. We
shared stories and spent a day together,
forming strong bonds. We even exchanged
numbers, says Ilkes mother, Josephine.
Although Ilke will not be writing exams
following her surgery, her marks are good
enough for her to pass Grade 5.
She is a clever girl. She brought all her
school work to the hospital, because she
wants to become a doctor, Josephine says.
Cole Basson (5) from Brooklyn was born
with a hole behind his palette. His mother,
Megan, says the hole was almost 7cm in dia-
meter and it had a detrimental effect on his
speech development.
This was his first operation and hopeful-
ly also his last. It will take a few days for his
speech, which was very nasal, to return and
then he will start with speech therapy
through Smile. I am glad it is done. He will
start with Grade R next year, Megan says.
The day after his operation, Cole was al-
ready eating yogurt.
Niyole Tsokobe (4) from Atlantis was in a
terrible car accident with her two sisters in
December. They all miraculously survived,
but Niyole has an enormous scar on the side
of her head where skin grafting was done
and no hair will ever grow.
Bit by bit Niyoles scalp will be stretched
to replace the scar. The Smile Foundation
made the second of her operations possible.
Although she seemed calm before her
daughter went into surgery, her mother,
Nomlinganiso, admitted this has beenavery
trying year because of the accident.
Reconstructive craniofacial surgery for a
one-year-old boy from Khayelitsha, ear re-
construction for a child from Bredasdorp
and plastic surgery for a little girl who has
Schimmelpennings Syndrome were just a
few of the other interventions that themedi-
cal and Smile teams faced during this week.
The next Smile week is on 30 November
at the Red Cross Childrens hospital.
Volunteers Bradwin Fortuin, Dhaamin CoxShihaam Mohammed and Leatitia Gradwell from Adcock
Ingram played with and entertained the Smile Week children at Tygerberg hospitals ward G3.
Here they are with (from left) Cole Basson, Niyole Tsokobe, Timothy Lakay and Lucinda Abra-
hams, who all had reconstructive and plastic surgery done. PHOTO: MAGRIET THERON
TRT slaan toe opdaggahuis
Daggaplante met n straatwaarde van
nagenoeg R44 000 is op 14 November in n
huis in Victoriastraat gevind toe die
taktiese reaksie-eenheid (TRT) van die
polisie daar toegeslaan het.
Volgens kapt.
kom wat as n daggakweekhuis ingerig is.
Die mure was met foelie uitgevoer; ligte
en n besproeiingstelsel was genstalleer
en daar was verskeie plante in potte in
die kamer. Twee mans en n vrou,
tussen die ouderdom van 27 en 33, is vir
die handel in dagga in hegtenis geneem.
T
hree men were killed in a collision on
the N1 on Saturday 14 November, just
before the Plattekloof bridge in the di-
rection of Cape Town.
The collision involved a Toyota bakkie
that was towing a trailer with a BMW on it.
The driver of the bakkie allegedly lost con-
trol of his vehicle, resulting in the trailer
swaying from side to side and ultimately
overturning the bakkie and the trailer on
the side of the road.
According to Pieter Rossouw, spokesper-
son for ER24, when ER24 arrived on the
scene they found two of the passengers had
already succumbed to their injuries. The
other patient, believed to be the driver of the
bakkie, was in a critical condition and was
rushed to Tygerberg Hospital for treatment.
However, on arrival at the hospital his vital
signs deteriorated and he was declared dead
at the hospital.
Rossouwsays the cause of this accident re-
mains unknown, but traffic police and other
local authoritieswere on scene for the inves-
tigation. Two witnesses said it seemed that
the tyre of the trailer burst, which caused
the driver to lose control.

epresentatives of different care
groups marched through Glenlily in
ParowWest on 14November not only
to protest against drug houses and dealers,
but also to make their voices heard about
a lack of police support.
The group only amounted to about 35 peo-
ple, but consisted of members of the UDM,
Age in Action, Parow Concerned Residents,
Pacrif neighbourhood watch, Parow Valley
neighbourhood watch and Pagad.
Wewant people to know thatwe are tired
of crime, we are tired of seeing our children
die of drugs and we are tired of the useless
police in Parow, says David Gow, a resi-
dent of Glenlily and member of Pagad.
Ricardo Adonis, vice chairperson of the
new Pacrif neighbourhood watch, says his
group joined the march as they are desper-
ate for support from the police.
They do not respond to us. We do not get
the assistance that was agreed upon. They
are supposed to send a vehicle to patrolwith
us, but they never do. Sometimes it takes
them two or three hours before they re-
spond to a call from us, he says.
He adds patrolling watch members often
spot suspicious vehicles and people that of-
ficial police alerts are out for, but still they
get very poor response.
We gather a lot of data about the weekly
alerts andwewill phone themwith informa-
tion, but often there is no response.
Adonis says the watch understands that
there is a profiling process, but once an
alert is out, that process has been done. We
want answers about what is happening to
cases, he says.
We have pictures of policemen in uni-
form going into drug houses on their own,
coming out again after only a few minutes.
If they are on patrol, they are supposed to
be a pair. What are they doing in there?
He says in Parow Street alone there are
six houses where drug dealings are going
on. He claims many of these houses belong
to oneman and that the police know this but
do not act on the information.
He says neighbourhood watches are pa-
trolling every night, but feel they cannot
make headway without proper support.
Sherm Arendse, one of the Concerned
Residents of Parow, spoke to the crowd that
turned up for the march before they took to
the streets followed by two police vehicles
and traffic services.
Parow clinic, which is a place for the
community, was burgled recently. The Her-
nus Kriel old age home was robbed last
week. A woman was the victim of an armed
robbery in Van Eyssen Street. Gangsters
and criminals are openly waiting for their
victims. Our future leaders are hooked on
drugs. This is the kind of drama we witness
every day. We are concerned for the aged
and the vulnerable, she said and then
thanked the police for accompanying them.
We rarely see you, as you are always
standing down at some accident and cannot
attend our calls, she told them.
When the marchers went past Hernus
Kriel old age home, they stopped to reassure
residents there that they care for them.
We would have liked to walk with them,
but we are too slow, three residents of the
home who stood outside, said.

n the same month that South Africas
first official water birth baby, Joanne
Wing, celebrated her 21st birthday in Ta-
ble View, another first in the birthing prac-
tice saw the light in Panorama.
On 29 October the newly built Panorama
health care centre on the corner of Hennie
Winterbach and Rothschild roads opened
its doors, amongst others to theOriginFam-
ily-Centred Maternity Hospital.
And what Joanne Wing and the Origin
hospital have in common is that the mid-
wife (or accoucheur as male midwives are
known), Sydney Grov, was present at both
their celebrations in October.
Grov delivered Wing during his time as
head of the maternity unit at Milnerton
Mediclinic. She was the first water birth at
a hospital in South Africa.
The fact that it ended up as a water birth
was more accidental than planned.
Grov explains: Renee (Wings mother)
wanted to use water as a gentle option for
pain control. She relaxed so well in the wa-
ter, resulting in fast and furious contrac-
tions and thus progressing much quicker
than expected. At the last minute, ready to
birth her baby, I wanted to remove her from
the pool, but she said she was very comfort-
able and did not want to be moved. I pro-
gressed and performed a water birth safely.
Thiswas a revolutionary event in trail-blaz-
ing water birth into an official procedure
for the private hospital sector in the West-
ern Cape.
In his life Grov has either delivered or
been present at the birth of over 23 000 ba-
bies.
He has spent some timeworking overseas
in the last decade, but is now chief opera-
tions officer of the Origin family-centered
maternity hospital in Panorama, where a
team of experienced midwives are now re-
ceiving training for when the hospital
opens its doors to the public in December.
Suzette Bester-Cloete, founder of this hos-
pital, says her passion for women taking
back control of their birthing process and
the negative effect that an elective and rou-
tine caesarean could have on a mothers
psyche and wellness to care for herself and
her baby after birth, moved her to establish
Origin.
She refers to the hospital as the first
birth boutique hospital in South Africa,
where art, crystal chandeliers and French
Provencal furniture adorn the designer sui-
tes, that are also equippedwith all themedi-
cal equipment required, says Grov.
Here families can be part of the birthing
process supported by a midwife, doula
(birth companion) or an obstetrician.
Bester-Cloete, who is a doula herself,
firmly believes in natural birth
The environment in which a woman la-
bours and gives birth in, is vitally impor-
tant. There are certain basic needs awoman
has in labour in order for nature to take its
course. Being in a private, warm, home-
like, comfortable environment, where we
can dim the lights andmake thewoman feel
safe, is incredibly important. Having a
birth pool at hand for her to labour in relax-
es her and helps her to cope with labour
pains, she says.
But Origin is also fully equipped should
a caesarean section be necessary for medi-
cal reasons.
Midwives are the unsung heroes of
birth. We are also going to carry out train-
ing of students who are on their advanced
midwifery training programme, and are go-
ing to sponsor them to do an internship or
observation. We need to nurture and culti-
vate the next generation of midwives in our
mentor programme, because my daughter
and then granddaughter need to give birth
in this country, Bester-Cloete says.
Origin will also offer a Well Women pro-
gramme (teenage, well mother, well baby,
family planning and menopause care), as
well as full antenatal care andamobile post-
natal care unit to visit mothers and babies
at home after they have left Origin.

ifference Thru Sport (DTS) hosted its
first over-18 basketball tournament on
14 November, where five social teams
and one club team from Parow, Milnerton,
Boland, Montana, Gugulethu and Belhar
spent the day battling
to become theDTS vic-
tors on this freshly
painted court in Par-
ow Valley.
The idea is that
this tournament must
bring about exposure
for the players so that
we can start a league.
The winter leagues
are now finished, but
we would like them to
keep going through
the summer as well,
says George Mentoor,
basketball organiser
at DTS.
We are very excit-
ed that Cape Town
Basketball became in-
volved with us this
year. They sponsored
all the balls. ZaliaHen-
dricks, one of the resi-
dents, sponsored ban-
ners, awards and
paint for the court.
Now we can have
training for kids three
times a week, he
says.
Mentoor says it is
very important that
social players should
have the opportunity
to affiliate with clubs,
so that their talent can
be recognised.
And this is exactly
what happened at the
DTS tournament.
I was very sur-
prised with the talent
I saw here. Their ca-
reers can go so much
further than just play-
ing socially, says Calvin Jean, vice presi-
dent of Cape Town Basketball, who attend-
ed the tournament. Cape Town has 26 bas-
ketball clubs in Cape Town for players of
both genders from u.12 up to super league.

rootedprogramme is pickingup speedwithg p g p g p p

kinders by nuwe skole ingeskryf het vir
2016 nie, dit dadelik doen.
Die Desembervakansie begin oor min-
der as n maand en heropen op 11 Januarie
vir onderwysers en op 13 Januarie vir leer-
ders.
In die vakansietyd sal die Wes-Kaapse
onderwysdepartement nie met skole kan
kommunikeer oor aansoeke nie. Daarom
vra ons dringend dat aansoeke afgehandel
moet word voor die skool sluit. Indienmen-

November verwys.
Dit is met skok dat ek die
berig gelees het en kan beslis
bevestig dat dit baie tipies is
hoe bejaarde inwoners by
aftree-oorde behandel word.
Ek ken vir Mariette al vir
baie jare en kan getuig dat sy
in n ontsettende toestand
was n die gebeure van
daardie dag, en vir n hele ruk
daarna. Sy moes was selfs op
medikasie gaan om haar te
help.
My moeder is 94 jaar oud en
ek het al herhaaldelik vir haar
en n vriendin van 86 jaar oud,
na Mariette toe geneem om in
die tuin te sit, die plante,
blomme en die wilde voltjies
te bewonder dit voed die siel.
As die eenheid deel van die
algemene terrein van die oord
is, hoekom moet die tuiniers
oor n leer klim om toegang te
kry? Aftree-oorde behoort die
weerlose ouer geslag te be-
skerm en nie te teister nie.
Nou n ander saak: Familie
mag nie by hul ouers as gaste
oornag nie, volgens die besluit
van n ander oord. Hoe on-
menslik is dit nie?

Re. Herrie by oord na betre-
ding, TB, 4 November. A
retirement village is supposed
to be a place of tranquillity,
joy, peace and happiness for
the aged, and not a place of
harassment, humiliation,
degrading, belittling and
exploitation!
Mariette and Heinz Primic
had one of the most beautiful
homes in Bedfordview, and
then moved to a farm at
Kenton-on-Sea, where they
designed and built the most
beautiful home with 12 bed-
Garden lovers
victimised
rooms, 10 bathrooms, 14 gara-
ges, a squash court, pool, sauna
spa and sitzbath!
They converted it into a
country guest house Intaka
Lodge when the children grew
up and left home. They had
visitors from all over the world,
including the prince of the
United Arab Emirates, Hamid
Bin Zayed Al- Nahyan, along
with his 12 body guards! His
brother is now the king of the
UAE.
Mariettes garden was a joy to
visit, and the Eastern Cape
birdwatching club would find
up to 150 species of birds
during a visit of two hours.
Gardens and beautiful homes
are their passion.
Now, 15 years later and due
to circumstances beyond their
control, they are residents at La
Provence, and are being victi-
mised and told that they are
worth less than nothing as
merely tenants!
This by people who obviously
know nothing about their
backgrounds, and are obviously
ignorant about gardens and
plants!
Intaka Lodge was greenhouse
friendly and Mariette personally
planted over 350 indigenous
trees when they bought the
land. They had a borehole and
supplied water to neighbouring
farmers during the dreadful
drought in the area. They had
an underground water tank that
Heinz constructed when build-
ing their home. It held 3 000
litres of rain water collected
from their roof. I must mention
they never ran out of water,
because they were wise, and
saved the rain water when it
came!
Mariette would not waste a
cup of water if she could help,
and her garden is water wise!
Where in a sectional title
complex are the use of two
stepladders required to enter
the common property?
Mariette has an open garden
for the residents and friends,
and many of the fellow resi-
dents have shared a cup of tea
in her garden and are always
welcome to come and sit and
admire the beauty of the plants
The constant reckless, thought-
less and downright criminal
activity caused by drivers is
actually quite breathtaking.
Stop signs have by pure
miracle changed to yield signs.
Road etiquette is non-existent.
Dont try crossing at a zebra
crossing; it is far too danger-
ous.
When it comes to red robots I
would like to provide clarity.
When the red light shines, it
means stop. This actually
means that you have to stay
stationary till the green light is
activated, but please be careful
when crossing or turning as
there could be other drivers
coming from the other side who
are not familiar with the robot
concept either.
Last week when I was driving
home on Durban Road past
Tyger Valley, I could see the
driver in front of me was
driving erratically, slowing
down, speeding up, not quite in
control if at all. A young female
about 26 old was driving a
black Toyota Yaris, merrily
texting away. I pulled up next
to her and hooted a few times.
She was so engrossed that she
did not even hear me.
When she eventually noticed
I indicated as to what she was
doing, I got the one finger
salute. I am sure her parents
would have been so proud.
It is quite simple, breaking
the rules of the road makes you
a criminal.

LEWENSKIEKIE
Start saving
water before
its too late
The looming national water crisis is
closer to home than you may think.
South Africa is facing its worst drought
in over two decades and our clean water
supply is under heavy strain.
Local government has announced that
it may implement water savings targets
from as soon as next month and the
provincial government is already looking
at precautionary restrictions for areas
such as the Karoo and West Coast.
Its only a matter of time before Cape
Town starts feeling the pinch too.
It has a devastating effect on the
agricultural sector and well no doubt see
a rise in food prices and subsequently an
increase in the cost of living too. It
paints a gloomy picture for next year.
But there is something we can do now:
Save water. It sounds simple enough, but
every day we waste litres of water
through carelessness.
Simple acts, such as ensuring your
pipes have no leaks and not watering
your garden or filling your pool during
the day, go a long way to saving water.
In fact, put away your hosepipe. Water
your plants with a watering can and
wash your car with a bucket youll be
conscious of how much water youre
using and save some in the process.
Dont leave taps running while washing
hands or brushing teeth, and shower
with purpose the time for leisurely long
showers is over.
Saving water is our responsibility. We
need to start doing it right now saving
water when there is none is too late.

Boek spreek vrees vanmense aan
M
liefdadigheidsorganisasie, Matla a Bana.
Die boekword opDinsdag 24November by
die Isabellas-restaurant in die Willowbrid-
ge-winkelsentrum bekendgestel. Hanlie Re-
tief, die bekende rubriekskrywer van Rap-
port, sal die vraag en antwoord-sessie behar-
tig. Die bekendstelling begin om 18:30 en
bespreking by [email protected] is
noodsaaklik.
lank in lewensgevaarlike toestande oorleef
totdat kol. Moeammar Ghadaffi hul vryla-
endieStrydomsop noopgrasgedeelte agter-
gelaat het. Kort daarna het sy en Callie sagte
plofgeluide gehoor. Callie was vas oortuig
In daardie stadium was hy so vreesbe-

L
ocal NGO Hope Cape Town had an ex-
tremely successful gala fundraiser in
Dresden, Germany recently.
Thanks to the money raised, Hope will be
able to continue to support the communities
of the Western Cape with its various pro-
grammes, including feeding schemes, toy li-
braries, resistance testing and 25Hope com-
munity health workers who are active in
the field.
The event was attended by more than 800
guests fromGermany,Austria, Switzerland
and South Africa, including celebrities and
politicians.
According to the organisations founder
and chair of Hope Cape Town, Rev Father
Stefan Hippler they only raised funds but
also created an international awareness of
the challenges that SouthAfrica still face in
terms of dealing with HIV/Aids and TB and
the related social ills.
We still have a long way to go and there
is an ever increasing need to expand our
services. With the continued support of our
international friends and the SouthAfrican
public,we are committed tomaking adiffer-
ence in the communities we serve.
Hope Cape Town donor relations manag-
er, Fahim Docrat, added that they were
very happy that their friends in Germany
are continuing to support the work and
havemanaged to raise funds which support
their efforts. Thiswouldhavenot beenpos-
sible without the hard work of our Dresden
coordinator, Viola Klein, and her teamwho
have been promoting our work for many
years now. We look forward to an even big-
ger event next year.
.Hope Cape Town is located at the Medi-
cal School of theUniversity of Stellenbosch,
Tygerberg campus and is a non-profit orga-
nisation providing outreach, education and
counselling at community level, focusing
on HIV/Aids and TB in the Western Cape.
Hope Cape Town began their work in 2001
with its mission to impact the communities
they work in and have
been very successful
to date. Having ex-
panded their services
to address the increas-
ing need they are now
more reliant on the
generosity of business
and individuals to
help fund their pro-
grammes.

the work they do, contact

of abuse and violence. We provide parcels
for them with food and clothing. Our last
outreach for the year is month end, says
founder and director Basha Taylor.

will be received with open arms.

dryf: Jannie Moolman, Corlea Botha, Kevin
ke nommers soos All I Ask of You, O Holy
Night, Pie Jesu, Ave Maria en Marys
Boy Child verwag. Ons beoog om die ge-
hoor te betrekmet die saamsing vanverskeie
Kersliedere soos StilleNag, Somerkersfees
wees, s Melissa.
Die kunstenaars gaan die aand alleen op-
tree, in duette, asook al vier saammet nmas-
is.
saamkom. Die konsert, wat vanjaar vir die
vierde jaar aangebied word, is verlede jaar
deur meer as 3 000 mense bygewoon.

Diary Dagboek
A local charity organisation annually host-
ing a Christmas campaign called Pack-
aged Love is looking for donations.
The aim, says Arthur Makhuri of the
Metro Evangelical Services, or MES, is to
bring awareness to the community and al-
so give out some packaged items to the peo-
ple that they serve in thenorthern suburbs.
He says they are appealing to any inter-
ested parties or donors to either donate or
bring the items that are listed on a special
poster of a Christmas tree they use that
forms the heart of their campaign.
The items include the following: A R35
toiletry pack; R550 for 10 Grow (employ-
ment) shifts; R25 for workshop stationery;
R90 for two packs of underwear; R140 for
one weeks stay in an overnight shelter,
R45 for a ream of paper; R50, equalling
meals for two weeks; R5 000 for a years
training and development for one person;
R500 for two visits with a social worker; or
R10 for five phone calls to loved ones or po-
tential employers.
This is so that the fortunate can also
have a merry Christmas, Arthur says.
Besides their big Christmas campaign,
MES is also registered as a participant in
next years Cape Town Cycle Tour, Arthus
says. We still have space for more cyclists
and we have secured 80 entries. Our entry
fee of R 1600 per cyclist, which includes the
R700 for your entry into the cycle tour.
