Her father, David Williams, said that what has upset the family more was that as a fami- ly they had given him a second chance to maintain his relationship with the children. “We were glad when they got divorced be- cause it became a very abusive relation- ship,” he said. “There was even a restraining order against him but after he promised to change we gave him that second chance but this is how he repaid us.” Williams also explained that the family was even more angered because in a sense he used them to carry out his evil deed. “On that day he came around to the house and borrowed R100 from my wife saying that he wanted to buy a bus clipcard. “Little did we know that he was going to use it to buy petrol to try and kill our daugh- ter and destroy her home.” Williams added that the family was very upset about the actions of the police in re- gard to the incident. Charges “Even though neighbours witnessed him leaving the house after it was alight, they did nothing. We were told that she must lay a charge, but how could she when she was in the hospital and spent the first few days in an induced coma? “They have only started their investiga- tions now after we went to the station on Fri- day with papers to prove that she is in hospi- tal. was on making a better life forherself and her children, andpart of that pride was herhome.“She worked very hard to

make it a home of which shewas very proud, because shemade lots of sacrifices to im-prove it.“At themoment the children

are staying with her parents, but they also lost everything inthe fire.

“One of them is at school butthere is no money to continuesending the younger one to ed-ucare because there is nomon-ey available.“I am appealing to the Good

Drug abuse worse than statsGARY VAN DYK

Drugs are destroying our schools, despitestatistics released by the education de-partment that show otherwise. While the Western Cape Education De-

partment revealed statistics whichshowed that fewer than 5 % of the prov-ince’s learners are involved in drugs, theTehillah Community Collaborative in El-sies River pointed out that up to 80 % ofthe children they see, test positive fordrugs.Their case studies have revealed that

theydealwith tik addicts as youngasnine.James Louw, from Tehillah, said that in

many cases, children use dagga, whichcan be bought for as little as R2 a joint inDelft.“One of our biggest concerns is a high

school inDelft, where children bunk class-es and walk around, smoking dagga.”Louw believes there is a huge miscon-

ception that drug use only takes place atpoorer schools. He says they frequently deal with users

from schools which are ranked among thetop 20 institutions in the province.“The recent statistics from the educa-

tion department are not a true reflectionof the problem.”In Bellville South the local CPF started

their Back-To-School community inter-vention campaign on Friday to highlightand protest against drug abuse in the com-munity aswell as domestic violence, gang-sterism and other criminal activities.“This will be an on-going campaign,”

said CPF chairperson David Sias.“Our major focus will be aimed at dis-

rupting the activities of drug dealers andgangsterism in the community.“We are requesting all organisations to

support our efforts, aswework in conjunc-tion with the police and neighbourhoodwatches with this campaign.“Drug abuse at our schools is also of

great concern and the CPF will interactwithall stakeholders in thearea especiallyour schools to address this.“Safety in our schools needs to be a pri-

ority and we will all engage with theschools and bemore visible at schools andthe community. Parents also need to getmore involved in assisting the schoolswith regard to their children’s behaviourand the children’s activities.“This year we will also start an anger

management, conflict management andlife skills programme.”

Leadership is leading the way at The RangeHigh School in Elsies River. The school has started the Allstar Leader-

ship Training Programme at the school aspart of activities run by the Equilibrium or-ganisation at the school.Deon Pietersen, one of the co-ordinators

of the project, said that they were alreadyproudof the first groupof learnerswhohaveenrolled for the Gold Status of The Presi-dent’s awards.“The First Six, as they are affectionately

known, are the first group to be honouredfor completing a five-day intensive leader-ship and survival camp,” he said.“They had to cook their own food, sleep

in tents and hike 69 km and complete a10 km canoeing route.“They were taken out of their comfort

zone and placed among the top students inthe Western Cape and came out successful.“They will be graduating with gold hon-

ours in October of this year and will also beseen at Equilibrium’s Annual Allstar Grad-uation Ceremony during that month.”He added that the aim of the programme

is to help these learners to motivate theirfriends and fellow learners to adopt a life-style that will help them achieve their posi-tive potential.“We want to introduce the concept of

whole person health for their body, soul andspirit,” he said.“Part of the project is to increase the self-

esteem and achievement in young people, and produce responsible, motivated andconfident young people.“We also want to provide them with posi-

tive role models and promote the impor-tance of character and principles in achiev-ing a quality life.“Our aim is also to produce young people

who are confident and competent to organ-ise and deliver activities for others in theircommunities.”CEO of Equilibrium, Yolande Groep,

pointed out that they are a Christian NonProfit Organisation that seeks to place apositive Christian role model in front ofyoung people.“The aim is to build quality relationships

with young people and through those rela-tionships to encourage the young people togive their very best to become the very bestthat they can be,” she says.“To achieve this, we believe that we have

towork at changing themindset of a genera-tion. Consequently, we have brought inoverseas sports-loving Christians who arenot part of thismindset inorder to challengeit.

“The objective is that these overseasyoung workers will introduce our young-sters to a more positive mindset and henceto more positive life choices.“To help deliver this primary objective,

we have developed the Allstar LeadershipTraining Programme. The course has beenwritten to encourage the social, cultural, moral and spiritual development of youngschoolchildrenmostly likely to be ‘influenc-ers’ in their peer groups.“The aim is to promote the importance of

‘whole’ person health and well-being, by us-ing a combination of classroom and sport-field activities that teach character, person-al and social responsibility.“We are sure that the course will prove

an invaluable part of the learners’ educa-tional and social development.”

Celebrating the completion of the recent camp were (from left) Naomi Petersen (life coach),Deon Pietersen (Allstar co-ordinator), Bradley Skippers, Dominique Johnson, Craig Bantam,Jonathan Keister (Range High School principal), Meidre Miller, Beatrice Solomons, Loren Viegelandand Neldene Kleinsmidt.

Kapt.

AmbulansToe ’n ambulans teen sowat

Daarna hethy in ’n koma gegaan.

Henrieta het Maandagmiddag gesê, hoe-wel Jean se toestand stabiel is, was daargeen vordering sedert Sondag nie.

Kelly Baloyi on set when the advertisement was shot.

Kelly for presidentDESIREÉ RORKE

Kelly Baloyi, the matric student at the cen-tre of the new FNB 2012 You Can Help, ad-vertising campaign, might become a politi-cian herself one day.So said her principal David Jantjies, at

Monument Park Highschool in Kraaifon-tein, where she is currently headgirl in ad-dition to being on the junior council of theCity of Cape Town.“Kelly is a fantastic bundle of energy. She

is a charismatic leader and makes thingshappen. Everything she touches becomes asuccess and from the outset she has alwayswanted to study political sciences and law,”Jantjies told TygerBurger last week.In this advertisment – which caused a po-

litical uproar over the last two weeks – Kel-ly, although small of frame, shares her ho-pes for South Africa in a powerful voice. In thenow“controversial”, but yet impas-

sioned speech, which Jantjies assured uswaswrittenbyKellyherself, she talks aboutthe brave young people of Naledi HighSchool, who in 1976 “took their first stepsto freedom”, when protesting for equal edu-cation.She then continues to say that, “We are

not here today to talk about revolution, butbelieve and what believe can do....Therewill be a day...where the difficulties we seebefore us, the greed, mistrust and anger, will be behind us.“There will be a day that the violence and

indifference to it,will be a thing of the past...a day when we stop blaming each other andstart helping each other...All the greatthings we have done, we have done toge-ther...” And then she ends with “...and thatday should be today. Nkosi Sikelele iAfri-ca.”The campaign was recorded Thursday

evening a fortnight ago on location at Nale-di High School and broadcasted live on allchannels including DSTV.According to Jantjies, the producers of

this advertisment approached the school asone of 1 600 others, and invited learners tosubmit their speeches on the topic of whatour youth hopes for the future.Kelly’s speechwasoneof 13 000 others and

was finaly chosen as the one to be used.In a Youtube clip one of the producers of

the campaign describes Kelly and the im-pact she had on them.“She is incredibly charismatic and po-

werful. We did not choose Kelly, she kindachose us,” he said.

Jantjies concurs: “She is very intelligentand this can be heard in her the strongmes-sage.Since then the ANC has unleashed a furo-

re, accusing FNB of purposefull targetingthem.Theybranded the campaignas a “treache-

reous attack”, and a “commercial masqua-rading as youth views”, whereas FNB in-sists that the campaign was misinterpretedby the ANC.This furore continued last week when

ANC bigwigs and the exuctive of FNB metat Luthuli House on Friday, after which thebank apologised to the ANC.To this,WesternCape premierHelenZille

tweeted on Saturday: “Saying that FNB ca-ved in order to protect the kids in the advertis amore devastating statement on theANCgovt than anything the ad said.”

EnthusiasticMeanwhile, Kelly continues her matric

year unabated and filled with enthusiasm, says principal Jantjies.“As she returned from the filming of the

ad in Johannesburg on the Thurday night, she immediately started getting ready to bethemaster of ceremonies at theGrade 8wel-coming night, which took place at theschool the very next day,” he said.Jantjies describes her as a dynamic lear-

ner who excels in culture, drama, literatu-re, singing, dancing and academics in addi-tion to being a local youth leader.“She has always spoken out about drug

abuseandviolenceagainstwomenandevenorganised a protest march last December,”he adds.“Shemakes people feel at ease andmakes

them laugh. Since the controversy surroun-ding the campaign started Kelly has been inschool every day, continuing hermatric ye-ar with ardour as she always has.”According to information on the FNB

website, Kelly was born in Limpopo to aShangaan father anda colouredmother, butlater moved to Kraaifontein, where her lea-dership skills were noticed at a very youngage.Shewas in grade 5when shewas first con-

fronted with her race and identity, whenher peers laughed at her becasue her dadwas black and her mother coloured. When she asked her father what she was,

he simply answered, “You can be whateveryou want to be.”She has been barred by FNB to grant in-

terviews.
