At the beginning of this year five- year-old Lea Keown was excited to get dressed in her fresh new uni- form, pack her school bag and start Grade R at Belvue Primary. From 11 January her dream came true and she went to the school making new friends and enjoying all the activities, but little did she know that an administrative bun- gle was going to end her dreams. Just before Valentine’s Day, when all thought should have been for spreading love, her parents were called to a meeting and told that all children born in 2007 would have to leave the school and go back to educare centres in the neigh- bourhood. Lea’s father, Riaan, described the feeling of despair when they came home from that meeting. “There was probably about 30 children affected, and I can’t talk for them, but how do you tell your daughter that she is not going to school the next morning? “I am still worried about how she sees this after spending time at the school already,” he said. What also angered the family is that they went through all the prop- er channels to register Lea at the school. “During September last year we went to the school and filled in all the proper forms and paid R400 for her registration,” continued Riaan. “We were advised to report to the school on 11 January, and that is where Lea has been since then. “At the meeting in February we were told that the school was acting on instruction from the Western Cape Education Department to dis- continue classes to learners born in 2007 with immediate effect. “The parents who attended the meeting were furious to say the least, and eventually got the princi- pal to agree for the children to stay until the end of the week, instead the next day Lea was given all her stationery and told not to come back to school. “Did anybody think about what this would do to this little girl?” asked Riaan angrily. . There were lots of happyHindle Road West Primarylearners and staff when theymoved to their new schoolbuildings.

For the past three years theschoolwashoused indingypre-fab buildings in a dusty patchin Delft, but there’s all smilesnow with the 1 098 learners cel-ebrating a brand new building, and even a grassy sportsfieldand gardens.

The senior managementteam at the school, NylinneGriggiths, Claudine Ogilvie,Louise Engelbrecht and MariaJack, could not contain theirexcitement at moving into thenew facility.

“You can see that all thelearners are excited,” said Grif-fiths.

“All this is for their benefitand I hope that they will makegood use of these facilities fortheir education. Of more im-portance is that the communityaround the school must realisethis is their facility for theirchildren and generations ofchildren to come.

“They must also be proud ofit and protect it in their neigh-bourhood.”

The new school boasts a ful-ly-equipped hall, that will alsobe available for hire by mem-bers of the surrounding com-munity, there’s a computer andmedia room, arts, music and li-brary.

. From page 1.He went on to say that after this action by

the school he went to the school and demand-ed that they take his child back until the mat-ter was fully investigated.

“How can adults treat these children likethis? What is going through my daughter’smind about being taken away from herfriends and the activities in Grade R?

“I only hope that it does not affect how shefeels about school when she gets to Grade 1.”

BronaghCaseyof theWCEDmediadepart-ment has replied in regard to this incidentsaying that the department subsidises threeGrade R classes at the school. The require-ments are that none of these classes shouldexceed 30 children per class.

The school started a fourth Grade R classwithout authorisation from the WCED.

“Once we became aware of this a meetingwas held between the department and theschool governing body (SGB) informingthem that if they were to keep a fourth class, they would need to apply for registration,”she explained.

“This is on condition that there is a needfor a fourth additional class with childrenturning six in Grade R this year. The SGBthen made the decision that they will applyfor registration and subsidy for Grade R forthe balance of Grade R learners born in 2006.

“The SGB was also informed that they willhave to ensure that parents of the youngerlearners (born in 2007) who are still at theschool, are notified. Those who paid feesshould claim them back from the school.

“The crux of the matter is that the schoolopened a fourth Grade R class without au-thorisation from the WCED. In terms of ad-mitting learners into the school, learnersborn in 2006 should be given preference tothose born in 2007.”

Riaan Keown concluded by saying that hisdaughter had stopped going to the schoolsince last week.

“We understand the reasoning, but arestill unhappy. The school was supposed toknow this legislation and those responsiblefor the trauma suffered by our childrenshould still be brought to book.”

Class ‘not authorised’

“You’re helping to fight crime in yourcommunity.”

“The community is the best form of infor-mation gatherers because they have theirears to the ground in their neighbourhoods.”

This statement was made by Brig DottyAdonis, the cluster commander for Delft, Ra-vensmead, Belhar and Bellville South.

According to Adonis the effective and effe-cient relationship with the community ofFreedom Farm, resulted in a huge daggastash being recovered.

According to her, local SAPS personneland members of the National InterventionUnit responded to information provided bythe public and searched a house in FreedomFarm in Delft.

During the operation police recovered 440parcels of dagga, seven hessian bags of dagga

and six rubbish bins full of dagga, which re-sulted in the arrest a 25-year-old woman.

Adonis estimates the street value of thedagga siezed, to be in the region of R100 000.

The suspect faces charges for the illegalpossession and dealing in dagga and will ap-pear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court thisweek.

In another incident four men were arre-sted on the R300 when they conned a localresident out of his ATM card and very cun-ningly withdrew cash from his account.

On Friday 9 March, at about 16:30 the vic-tim attempted to draw money from the ATMat the Caltex Garage in Delft Main Road, when he was distracted by men who offeredhim help.

During the distraction the men swappedhis card and slipped away.

The victim managed to get a proper dis-

cription of the men and the car they wereusing and immediaitely alerted police offici-als on patrol in the area who followed up allpossible leads.

The suspects were then spotted at anotherATM in the area but managed to evade ar-rest. Their escape was short-lived becausepolice in the patrol van called for backup, which led to the escaping car and occupantsbeing stopped on the R300.

All in their late and early 30s the four sus-pects were arrested and charged for theft.

The victim reported that he received anSMS informing him that the suspects hadwithdrawn R800 from his account.

Police recovered the cash withdrawn, se-veral ATM cards and four cellphones usedduring the crime.

The suspects will also appear in the Bell-ville Magistrate’s Court this week.

‘Help police to fight crime’

The drums are silent at a local nitespot aftercomplaints from neighbours.

The City of Cape Town’s Liquor Enforce-ment Unit partnered with the South AfricanPolice Services to inspect African Drum, anightclub in Elsies River, during the earlyhours of Thursday 8 March.

This followed complaints from members ofthe public about loud music.

Officers confiscated four of the club’s am-plifiers, given that the owner ignored previ-ous notices issued regarding the creation ofa noise nuisance.

The equipment will only be released oncethe city is satisfied that the establishmenthas met all of the necessary requirementsand that no further complaints have been re-ceived from the community.

The Liquor Enforcement Unit will conti-nue to conduct operations like this in resi-dential areas.

The first training sessions for thisyear’s Youth Dance Challenge kickedoff this week.

The event, which is being held for thethird year, is organised by DanceCraft Stu-dio (previously known as Fred Astaire Ty-gervalley) in conjunction with media part-ner TygerBurger.

Owner of DanceCraft Studio Marina Mi-lanovic says the choice to sever ties withthe Fred Astaire franchise affords themgreater freedom to be involved in socialdancing projects such as the Youth DanceChallenge, Humira Live and Dance for LifeCampaign and the Artscape School ArtsFestival.

She adds that apart from the namechange everything else remains the same.

High school learners from 23 schools infour areas will compete in the competitionthis year.

The Ulti-mate Final event will then see the best cou-ples in each of the areas battle it out on thedancefloor at the same time,” Milanovic ex-plained.

She added the couples will this year betrained in dancing the box rumba, mamboand quick step.

Three schools have offered Dancecraftthe use of their halls for training. Schoolsfrom the city bowl will be trained at Gar-

dens CommercialHigh, Kuils Riverschools will train at theWestern Cape SportSchool in Kuils River, and schools from Mil-nerton and Bloubergwill train at Blouber-grant High School.

Learners from theBellville, Durbanvilleand other areas will betrained at the Dance-Craft Studio Tygerval-ley.

The first classes tookplace on Monday (12

March).“We are delighted the competition has be-

come so popular. It is fantastic to see thatschools that have participated last yearcannot wait to do it again,” Milanovic said.

Milanovic said they are also in the proc-ess of creating a website for the event(www.youthdancechallenge.info).

ANDRÉ BAKKES

The De Grendel Lions Club upheld thetradition of entertaining the TandemBlind Association of Cyclists ThroughSouth Africa with a braai and somedrinks at the Edgemead Sports Club onFriday evening.

This event came just two days before theCape Argus Cycle Tour, in which a handfulof blind and visually impaired cyclists fromall over the country take part.

These cyclists not only overcome exhaus-tion, but also the obstacle of being visuallyimpaired.

The cyclist in the front of the tandem bikeis called a pilot and the visually impairedperson in the back is called a stoker.

According to the local Lions president,Martin Kallis, the club is very proud of itswork with visually impaired people.

“I have a passion for the blind people whoride in the Argus! For us it’s a huge thing.

We’ve also sponsored three dogs already, which is about R20 000 to train just one dog,”says Kallis.

Chairperson of the SA Tandem Associa-tion of the Western Cape, Allen Swartz, saysabout 40 visually impaired people took partin Sunday’s Argus.

Swartz only has good things to say abouttheir relationship with the Lions.

“We are so amazed that there are peoplewho have so much love and kindness in thisworld. We depend on people who can see topractise this sport,” he says.

. Meanwhile, on Monday TygerBurgerheard that one of the visually impaired cy-clists, Cindy Jacobsz, and her pilot, MickeyMinie, were involved in an accident just16km from the Argus finish line.

Minie has been released from hospitalwith bruised ribs, but Jacobsz was still be-ing treated for a broken pelvis at the timeof going to press.

Organiser Calvin Peters, who is alsohosting the jazz event, said that there weremany requests to host such an event by thepublic.

“For me the jazz goes hand in hand withthe gospel side of things because many ofour young jazz musicians come from thegospel field, and want to showcase their tal-ents to the public.

“With this event we want to show thepublic the amazing talent that there isamong the people and invite families tocome and enjoy themselves with a familypicnic day with great music,” he said.

The event will be preceded by a Praiseand Worship service from 09:00 to 10:00 con-ducted by Tommy Saaiden.

“This is not just for those patrons whowish to come early and get a good spot,”continued Peters.

“But it is also for those not wanting tomiss out on their Sunday church service.”

Festival-goers are encouraged to enjoy afamily picnic on the lawn by bringing alongtheir gazebos, beach umbrellas and fold-upchairs.

The festival is children-friendly and in-cludes a play area with jumping castles andgames. Safe and secure paid parking facili-ties have been put in place at selected facto-ries in the area.

Tickets are being sold through variouschurches and religious organisations. Gasbraais and open fires are not allowed butan area has been demarcated for this pur-pose. Alcohol will not be sold or allowed atthe event. There’ll be various food stalls aswell as arts and crafts markets.

PROMOTION

In 2011 more than 750 children from disadvan-taged communities experienced live rugby. This was made possible by DHL Express wholeverages its sponsorship of the Stormers tointroduce the game of rugby to children fromunderprivileged backgrounds by hostingthem at local games.

As the sole sponsor of the Stormers rugbyteam, DHL Expressshared with TygerBurg-er why the world’s lead-ing international ship-ping company is pas-sionate aboutsupporting South Afri-can rugby.

“DHL Express has aproud heritage of sup-porting sports at a re-gional and internationallevel,” says CharlesBrewer, managing di-rector of DHL Express inthe sub-Saharan Africanregion. “Our corporatebrand is aligned to greatinternational sportingproperties, includingFormula 1 motor racing, the Volvo Ocean Raceand Manchester Unitedsoccer team.

“DHL has operated inAfrica for over 30 years, and is present in 51countries across the con-tinent. While our brandis known by business leaders across Africa, and our offering is well supported by small, medium and large enterprises, we have recog-nised the need to establish a local sponsorshipavenue to strengthen brand awareness and todrive top-of-mind recall.”

When choosing a sporting partner, DHL Ex-press looks for an activity that requires a com-bination of attributes that create winningcompanies as well as winning teams – namelyteam work, a can-do attitude, speed, passionand enthusiasm.

Brewer says the Stormers displayed these

attributes in abundance. “The DNA of theStormers reflects that of DHL Express. Add tothis the fact that rugby has such a wide follow-ing in South Africa, and it was a naturalchoice.”
