The 73-year-olds have been the record hol- ders for the “Longest driven journey” in the Guiness Book of World Records since 1998 Love grows stronger It is therefore no surprise they found their way to Melkbosstrand and Table View in their Toyota LandCruiser FJ60 recently – for the second time. “We love Cape Town, but the traffic is too much,” says Emil in his Swiss accent. It was his 73rd birthday on Tuesday when TygerBurger contacted him. He laughs before he says: “You are the se- cond person to wish me a happy birthday to- day. My wife was the first!” Their love evidently grew stronger with ever passing kilometres on their Toyota’s odometer. “The car is as ancient as me,” jokes Emil, before adding that the engine is still running smoothly, but the body has taken a beating. Answers to TygerBurger’s questions come quickly, because the Schmids have done just over 250 interviews since they started their journey. The attempt to ask a unique question was shot down when Emil answered the next wit- hout a moment of hesitation: “There are not enough roads in Antarctica! It is also very expensive and virtually impossible to get permits. We live out of a retirement pension from Switzerland and it’s not bad, but not nearly enough to go to Antarctica.” Most people can only dream of having the funds available to see but one country, and Emil is aware how lucky they have been. “In Switzerland most couples would buy a house, but my wife and I decided to rather see the world. Then later her mother died and left us some money in her will and then later my mother also died. Since then we ha- ve lived off a pension,” he continues. The challenge of getting enough money to continue their adventure isn’t as big as over- coming insufficient infrastructure, terro- rism or bureaucracy. “In some countries, especially in Africa, the roads are non-existent! And then in Nige- ria there is the Boko Haram, to name but one of the many terrorist groups out there. But the biggest challenge must be getting the right visas to travel through the world. Befo- re Switzerland went to the Schengen Visa sy- stem it was much easier, but now that we fall under the whole of Europe it can take a very long time to get it,” says Emil. Into Africa Now they are heading into Africa once again to see places they have never seen be- fore. One Emil is particularly looking for- ward to is Ethiopia, since mountainous ter- rain is where his soul finds peace. For this reason Mongolia has a special place in his heart. Pacific islands are also calling once again, but this time the Schmids want to skip Samoa and Papa New Guinea. “We have been there before, and mostly when you visit a country for the second time it holds some disappointment.” The thought of them going to one place every December holiday like “normal peo- ple” must be a depressing proposition. “This time we want to go to Micronesia. It is very small with a few islands, so we hope to hop from one island to the next.” TygerBurger stops Emil right there and says we cannot steal any more minutes from his birthday. onMelkbosstrand’s beach is upset about thenew rules hampering his routine, but partic-ularly with the lack of clarity surroundingdog walking rules.He is not alone, with local ratepayers’ as-
sociation excomember JohnTaylor sendingan email to the City of Cape Town about thematter recently.
Carrying on as usualTaylor is worried that it is taking the City
too long to erect the proper signage to informthe public of the rules, which came into ef-fect at the end of last year.“It is very frustrating,” says Taylor in his
email.“Despite more that a year of preparation
and time to get the policy in place and signsup ahead of the Christmas season, the Cityhas not performed and everyone in Melk-bosstrand has been left wondering just what
is going on. So for now it seems there is nopublic information, no warnings (or fines)by law enforcement and no signage – despitepromises by the City to get it sorted out. Sothe dogs (and their owners) are just carryingon as usual.”Hehas since received a reply from theCity
inwhich the department of sport, recreationand amenities admitted they are aware ofthe “animal zone confusion”.They are apparently waiting on approval
of the new signage and will install them interms of the correct zones, as approved bysubcouncil 1.Theyalso indicated that anyold signswith
incorrect information will be removed thisweek.These older signs permit dog walking on
leashes in areas where it is under the newlaw, not permitted.“Law enforcement cannot now just write
out fines to anyone who breaks the law, be-cause the person might not know what thenew law is,” says Taylor.He hopes the new signage will have been
placed at the beach before the end of themonth.“I want to see law enforcement walking
around with pamphlets and distributingthese to people with dogs. By doing this andthrough word of mouth the news will
spread,” he adds.The beach has been demarcated into six
sections, each with it’s own dog-walking cri-teria.From 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue dogs will
be allowed to be walked on a leash, and from5th Avenue to 11th Avenue (between 1 De-cember and 31 March), no dogs will be al-lowed on the pathways.
Horse accessFrom 11th Avenue to 19th Avenue (be-
tween 1 May and 31 October), dogs will beallowed on a leash, and from 1 November to30 April no dogs will be allowed between09:00 and 19:00.From 19th Avenue to Soutrivier, dogs will
be allowed on a leash and from Soutrivierto Strand Road, free running dogs will be al-lowed at all times.Finally, fromStrandRoad toEdwardCres-
cent, dogs can run free from09:00 to 17:00 anddogs on a leash from 06:00 to 09:00 and from17:00 to 20:00.This final point has been decided on to al-

Melkbosstrand is becoming a binscratcher’s haven, and there ap-pears little authorities can do to
curb the influx.To make matters worse, there might be a
link between bin scratchers and crime.Two bin scratchers were apparently
caught breaking into a home recently.As a result, Melkbos Neighbourhood
Watch has, through a newsletter, urged thecommunity to take responsibility for whatthey put out on bin days.Melkbosstrand police station command-
er Captain Ronita van der Toorn also em-phasises this point, and says the police canonly talk to bin scratchers if they see themtaking something that does not belong tothem.“Garbage left in amunicipal bin is intend-
ed for the municipality. It is an agreementbetween the house owner and the City ofCape Town,” says Van der Toorn.“We tell them this, as well as the fact that
it is extremely unhygienic to scratcharound in someone else’s garbage.”According to her the majority of bin
scratchers would not argue with the police.She also insists neither the police nor the
local neighbourhood watch are allowed toremove a someone from the suburb againsttheir will.BothVan der Toorn and thewatch reckon
the most efficient way to overcome the in-cursion is for the public to carefully consid-er what they throw away.“Melkbosstrand has seen an alarming in-
crease in bin scratchers, so it is vital thatwe as a community understand the reper-cussions our actions have on everyone elsearound us,” reads the email from the neigh-bourhood watch.“It is important to understand that only
a very small percentage of these people areneedy asmany of them come into townwitha different agenda, and secondly that whatwe throw out, will encourage them to comeback and further encourage additional binscratchers.”
Van der Toorn says people who want tohelp feed vagrants should rather donatefood to local non-profit organisations.The watch is also working on a plan with
Table View Freecycle, an intiative that hasalready borne fruit in Table View.

the Hillcrest Jockey Academy in Durban,but his grandmother Anne Cook needs toraise R73 500 to see him flourish.Anne, who lives in Atlantis, has taken

Melkbosstrand police suspect a house bur-
glar is using “a substance” to put residentsinto a deep sleep before he steals their posses-sions.
Local police commander, Captain Ronita
van der Toorn, elaborates: “On Friday the13th, between 00:00 and 04:00, a house inMelkbosstrand was broken into and someform of substance was burnt, which appearsto have caused the occupants to go into adeep sleep. The substance was burnt in bothupstairs and downstairs bedrooms wherethe occupants were sleeping.”
The suspect apparently stole cell phones,electronic equipment, jewellery and a fire-arm and ammunition.
The police are looking for a man of aver-age build with a dark complexion, whotends to move around the area from 23:00and 04:00.
“We and theMelkbosstrandcommunity po-lice forum con-tinue to elicitcommunitypartnershipsand support insolving crime inour community.Over the pasttwo monthshousebreakingshave not stabi-lised due to theone suspect thatis still at large,”continues Vander Toorn.
The localneighbourhoodwatch, alongwith the police and security companies,have been performing late and early hourpatrols in an effort to catch the suspectedperpetrator.
Residents are warned to be extra carefuland vigilant – especially at night.
Other tips include contacting the policeas soon as one hears any suspicious noiseor activity, lock all security gates and doors,secure all opening windows and doors withburglar bars, set the alarm and beams whengoing out and when going to bed, make surethe garage door is closed, lock all boundarygates, keep handbags, wallets, laptops andcell phones out of view from windows, andclose curtains and blinds at night.

Meticulously constructed on the pillars ofthe community, Table View Football Clubhas become an example of what can be
achieved with grassroots support.This year the club, which is one of the biggest
in South Africa, is celebrating its 30th anniversa-ry and with the way it is being run it would beno surprise if it’s still around in the year 2100.By then the players and supporters might very
well teleport to and from the club, laughing at howthings used to be in 1985 when Russell Gee and Co-lin Gie first started it.Current committee membe, Alan Zeeman, re-
members “the good ol’ days” quite well.“Table View was much smaller back then. We
all knew everybody. Because of that the club usedto get involved in everything. We used to be mar-shals in the cycle races, and join in a train rideto Fisantekraal. There was a lot of fund-raisingback then,” says Zeeman, who has been involvedwith the club from the very beginning.“A lot of the money to establish this club had
to come from the people themselves. Business wasgrowing in Table View, but we didn’t have bigsponsors. Families had to raise funds.”Since then the clubhasmanaged to get somebig-
ger sponsors on board, but the community contin-ues to play an important role in supporting theclub.Without its biggest supporting pillar, the club
will either collapse in ignominy or become a face-less, shapeless entity.For a few years they drifted away from being
a community club by scouting players from otherareas, all in the name of doing well on the field.At the end of 2013 they decided to “go back to
their roots”, and only use local players, and eversince, local fans have inundated the club withtheir support – despite the first team being rele-gated from the Premier Division last year.“Clubs in the Premier Division import players
from outside areas and pay coaches because of thecompetitive nature. We did the same. But at theend of the game they would leave and not supportthe bar or chat to the people and become role-mod-els for the kids. Since our decision, our attendanceat the games quadrupled,” says Zeeman.
He adds that by the end of the season the teamstarted to gel and managed to beat the best ofteams, but by then it was too late.TygerBurger was entertained by many stories
of the past and how the club has come to have abeautiful clubhouse, a fully-licensedbar, anopera-tional kitchen, a tuck shop, DSTV and televisions,change rooms, fences and four fields (three ofwhich have lighting).Besides the help from the department of sport
and recreation, it is clear that the club standssquarely on the back of the community.Zeeman adds they always look at new ways of
generating income.“The most important for us, however, is to be-
come even more entrenched in the community,”he says.In the end it isn’t just about taking, but giving
back as well, with various community outreachprojects on the books or on the cards.The club currently boasts 30 teams.Table View Football Club will be having a reun-
ion on 28 February from 19:00 and those who havehad a hand in the club over the years are invitedto attend.
This Table View Football Club team won the cup and the league in 2012.

On Wednesday, 4 March 2015, between 10:00 and 12:00 a full volume siren test of the Koeberg Public WarningSystem will be conducted in the areas of Atlantis, Duynefontein, Melkbosstrand, Van Riebeeckstrand,Philadelphia, Bloubergstrand, Bloubergrandt, West Beach, Sunningdale, Parklands, Robben Island and the farmssurrounding Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. The siren/public address systems installed will be tested during thisexercise. Public Address announcements informing you of the test will be made before and after the sirens aresounded.

clists at the start of the event at sunrise andset off on a 750 km adventure of a lifetime.The two raced hard up Simola hill and
northwards through Rheenendal, traver-sing thedramaticHomtini pass, but gradual-ly lost sight of lead pair Björn Rondelez andNiek Lingier from Belgium.By the time they faced the final assault on
the finish line along the famous sevenpassesroad to the NMMU Campus in George, theywere nearly 30 minutes behind the overseasriders, finishing the 109km stage – with2 716m of climbing - second in 5:48:45.

“short” stage - 75km’s - from Villiersdorp toFranschhoek of the TransCape event on Va-lentine’s Day still second, which would bethe overall position they would finish in.This after conquering the famous Groen-landberg and Franschhoek Pass and finis-hing this grueling event at the La CouronneWine Farm in Franschhoek in 3:45:24.In total they spent 36:00:09 in the saddle
and speaking at the finish line Lambrechtsaid about the race, “This was a fantastic ad-venture, the organizing was brilliant, we(the riders) were spoilt and it was a brilliantroute!”Cyclists who want to be a part of next ye-

Tygerberg Aquatics swimmers RebeccaMeder (12) and Jason van der Touw (19) we-re exceptional at the SSA (Swimming SouthAfrica) Grand Prix Series held at the Stel-lenbosch University swimming pool from13 to 15 February.Rebecca broke the South African record
in the 200m freestyle in a time of 2:09.72 bre-aking the previous record of 2:10.91, held byJessica Liss since 2007.Rebecca is currently in grade 7 at Edge-
mead Primary School. She is the currentWestern Province Victrix Ludorum andmultiple WP age group record holder. Re-becca’s other top achievements includedwinning the 800m freestyle for women, pla-cing second in the 400m individual medleyand placing third in the 200m individualmedley. Rebecca broke four WP age grouprecords as follows: 200m freestyle (2:09.72);800m freestyle (9:17.71); 200m individualmedley (2:26.97); 400m individual medley(5:08.92).What makes these records very exciting
is that three of the records are very old andtwo were held by previous SA Championsand Olympians, Natalie du Toit (400m indi-vidual medley – WP record from 2001) and
Wendy Trott (800m freestyle – WP recordfrom 2003).Jason (Bellville) is currently post-matric
and concentrating on his swimming. He isthe current Western Province champion inthe 200m and 400m freestyle events.At the Grand Prix he placed second in the
400m freestyle in a time of 4:11.33 and fourthin the 200m freestyle in a time of 1:55.67.Jason is coached by Lucy Conradie and
is based in the senior swimming squad thattrains at the Tygervalley Virgin Activegym. Rebecca is coached by Bianca Maraisand is based in the senior swimming squadthat trains at the N1 City Virgin Activegym.Tygerberg Aquatics is currently one of
the biggest and most competitive swim-ming clubs in South Africa.Theyare the currentWPClubChampions
and have held this title for the past two ye-ars.They are taking 22 swimmers to the top
National Age Group Championships to beheld in Port Elizabeth from 12 to 15 Marchand a further 10 swimmers to the SA Natio-nal Championships to be held in Durbanfrom 13 to 18 April.
