Roadworks along the Stellenbosch Arte-rial and Van Riebeeck Road nearSaxenburg Park are having a detri-

mental effect on some businesses. Some business-owners TygerBurger

spoke to said they are forced to adjust theirroutes, business hours and staff shifts in or-der to keep head above water.

Construction on the Stellenbosch Arteri-al (M12) and Van Riebeeck(R102) have been ongoing for ayear. Earlier this year Tyger-Burger reported the deadlinefor the nearly R140 millionproject is January 2015. But itwas confirmed this week thatthe new date for completion isApril 2015 – three months later.

The construction includesthe general upgrade of the M12,the construction of a new dualcarriageway and rehabilita-tion of the existing dual andsingle carriageways.

Business and taxi-owner Ab-dul Siebritz said since work began he hadto re-route his taxis in order to ensure chil-dren arrive at school on time.

Traffic standstillHe said taxi-drivers now use alternative

routes from Silversands to get to three dif-ferent schools in Kuils River.

“The traffic stands still in the morningand the children arrive late at school,” Sieb-rits, owner of Siebritz Transport in Silver-sands, said.

He said as a result parents often complain.“The roadworks have forced our drivers

to use Nooiensfontein via Highbury. Thedrivers also have to leave much earlier inthe morning – 05:45,” Siebritz explained.

He said children often get marked for be-

ing late. “The schools then inform the par-ents that they arrived late due to the trans-port, and not the congestion,” Siebritz said.

Another business-owner said he is con-sidering cutting his employees’ work-hoursin order to survive; something he does notwant to do.

Gareth Pool, owner of the Engen ServiceStation situated along Van Riebeeck Roadnear the Zevenwacht Mall, said he employs30 people.

Running at a lossHe said he might have to put

some of them on short-time.“It’s something I do not wantto do,” Pool said.

He said the roadworks havea severe effect on his business.“For the last four months theslipway to our main entrancehave been closed due to theconstruction. We are basicallyrunning at a loss.”

Only one entrance is open.“Also, when you turn into

the garage it takes a while toget back out. Buying fuel is al-

ready such a grudge, you do not want towaste it in standing still in traffic,” he add-ed.

He has been losing close to 5 000 custom-ers monthly and said that his fuel sales aredown by an estimated 120 000 litres amonth.

“I would like it if they can re-open themain entrance. I want them to finish be-cause this is a nightmare.”

Pool said he has spoken to some of the en-gineers on site.

“One of them said the construction at theentrance would last two months, but theyare in month four already.”

He said the contractors and engineershave failed to keep them informed about theconstruction progress. “They can at least

send us an e-mail or newsletters, we’re leftin the dark.”

The project is run by the provincial de-partment of transport and public works andthe contractor is Martin & East. The engi-neers are Royal HaskoningDHV.

Transport department spokesperson Al-Ameen Kafaar said the department is awareof the inconvenience and complaints bysome road users.

“The department did receive complaintsfrom the public,” Kafaar said.

He said the anticipated completion datefor the project is April 2015 but there couldbe delays, particularly due to the weather.

Such delays will have an impact on thecompletion date, Kafaar said.

He said the department has instructedone of the engineering firms working on theproject to coordinate communication withthe public.

Royal HaskoningDHV was approachedfor comment two weeks ago. By the time ofgoing to print they still had not responded.

Ian Britten, a spokesperson of RoyalHaskoningDHV, told TygerBurger earlierthis year that Martin & East started roadworks on 17 October 2013 and that the con-struction would last 15 months.

Berenice Isaacs, Natalia Shosha, Raphael Kolbee, Avril Cupido, Xoliswa Mpulu, Olwethu Mxhamli,Veronica Williams and Nerine Grainger from community based organisation Early Years Services(EYS) were all part of the group who spread the message on International Foetal AlcoholSyndrome Day on Tuesday 9 September.

‘Don’t drink when pregnant’is the message for momsAn organisation concerned with the healthof babies recently reminded mothers-to-benot to consume alcohol during pregnancy.Refraining from alcohol prevents Foetal

Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), was the messageconveyed by community organisation, Ear-ly Years Services (EYS).Their awareness message was part of In-

ternational Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Daycelebrated on Tuesday 9 September.EYS, a non profit organisation, conducts

Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD)training across the Peninsula. The trainingincludes community awareness, preven-tion, and intervention. In celebration of Foetal Alcohol Syn-

drome Day the group took to the streets ofAthlone where they were joined by con-cerned motorists at the corner of Klipfon-tein Road and Vanguard Drive. Drivershooted to spread the awarenessmessage, di-rector Avril Cupido said.“Women who are sexually active and not

using effective contraception might getpregnant and expose their baby to alcoholbefore they realize they are pregnant.“More than half of pregnancies in South

Africa are unplanned,” she said.Avril said FAS is completely preventable.“Despite myths, there is no scientific evi-

dence available setting a “safe” amount ofalcohol that will not affect the developingfoetus.“Alcohol in the mother’s blood passes to

the baby through the placenta and the um-bilical cord. When a woman drinks alcohol,so does her baby.“There is alsono safe time todrinkduring

pregnancy, including before a womanknows she is pregnant,” Avril said.FAS can impact children’s physical, men-

tal, behavioural and cognitive develop-ment, she said.“Toprevent thedisorder, awomanshould

not drink alcohol while she is pregnant orif she suspects she is pregnant. Awoman of-ten does not know that she is pregnant forup to four to six weeks after conception.“If a woman is drinking alcohol during

pregnancy, it is never too late to stop. Thisis because the brain growth takes placethroughout pregnancy. The sooner a wo-man stops drinking, the safer it will be forher and her baby,” Avril concluded.

Community involvement and the assistancefromoutside roleplayers are someof the sug-gestions put forward by Mfuleni police as ameans to fight crime following the releaseof the latest crime statistics. The crime statistics were released nation-

ally on Friday 19 September. Results show murder in the Mfuleni pre-

cinct has increased this past year.A total of 118murderswere reported at the

station in the 2014 period compared to 99 in2013. Attempted murder has also increasedfrom 115 in 2013 to 141.Other serious crimes on the increase in-

clude sexual crimes and robberywith aggra-vating circumstances.Sexual Crimes increased from 166 to 192,

while robbery shot up from 455 in 2013, to

597 this year.Hotspots for these crimes include Mfuleni

and the Bardale informal settlement in sec-tor 2, as well as Wesbank in sector 3.Speaking to TygerBurger this week, Mfu-

leni station commander Colonel LuyandaDamoyi said the station had been workinghard to address these problems.Damoyi said they noticed the increases in

March already and as a result have taken ac-tion.“Since the beginning of April we have

been busy with our operational plans,” hesaid.“What we have picked up, is that often

gangs are involved in these murders, butvery often these incidents are also linked toalcohol abuse.“Often what might start out as an assault

then turns into a murder,” he said.He said police have for this reason started

clamping down on liquor outlets. He said the alcohol abuse contributes to

the high number of assaults. Assault withthe intent to inflict grievous bodily harmrose to 320 this year. Last year the numberof cases reported was 236.“Another thing is that assaults occur be-

hind closed doors,” Damoyi said. These assaults, he said, can be sexual or

domestic violence in which young childrenare often the victims.Referring to the increase in robberies, Da-

moyi said theyhad “started to shift our focuson confiscating guns and dangerous weap-ons”.In the past year police have had a signifi-

cant success with confiscations of danger-ous weapons such as guns and knives whichare used to commit robbery.Another factor contributing to the in-

crease of robberies, he said, included envi-

ronmental designs.“Many of these areas like Happy Valley

are new and do not have sufficient street-lights.”He said other role-players should start in-

tervening and assist in this regard. “Per-haps start cutting down bushes,” he said. This issue, according to Damoyi, is also a

concern in Wesbank and Green Park.Damoyi also suggested community mem-

bers start joining their sub-forums in orderto help fight crime.Joseph Adams, spokesperson for the local

CPF, concurs.“We as the CPF are concerned about the

increases. We want the provincial police todeploy more police personnel and establisha satellite police station in Wesbank but wealso encourage the community to organisethemselves and get involved in their block, street and neighbourhood watches.”

Strike actions and land invasions in theMfuleni policing precinct often ham-per the police’s operational capability,

station management said last week.Station commander Colonel Luyanda Da-

moyi says they are becoming more con-cerned about these occurrences. He said violent strike action and invasion

of private and municipalproperty, prevent policefrom doing operationalwork and patrols else-where.“In the past few

months we have noticedthere has been an in-crease in strikes andland invasions, accom-panied by violence andthe vandalising of prop-erty.“We are concerned

about this. We want tosay to the communitythat as much as theyhave the right to expressthemselves, they need to do so in a civilisedmanner and not use violence.“They must respect the rights of other

people,” Damoyi said.Referring to a recent strike in Mfuleni

where two buses were damaged and twotrucks torched, Damoyi said he was con-cerned police resources were being takenaway from their main focus.“When you deal with a strike, you redi-

rect your resources who are suppose to bedoing the normal day-to-day policing. It

(strikes) is a resource hungry activity. Youare forced to shift your responsibility to en-sure no one gets injured.”At a strike on Wednesday 3 September,

protesters threw stones at police. Police re-sponded by firing rubber bullets at thecrowd. “No injuries were reported,” Da-moyi said. Eight people were arrested.“You could see there were criminal ele-

ments because while they were throwingstones they stole items from the truck.”

He said 28 police mem-bers were deployed on theday.“These were people who

were supposed to do otheroperations. He said there has been

several incidents of landinvasion in the last twomonths.“In Fountain Village in

Hindle Road property wasdamaged, certain peoplewere injured.“We want to inform the

community that we willmake arrests when theyfind themselves on the oth-

er side of the law.”Another issue they want to address is the

emergence of youth gangs. To do this, theywill form a Multi Sector Gang Forum nextmonth.“We have been dealing with well estab-

lished gangs, especially in Wesbank, butnow we thought it necessary to start withthe task teams where we can involve all or-ganisations working in the community.”A meeting will be held on Wednesday 1

October.

Police shortage hampers crime fightRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

The shortage of personnel at the Kleinv-lei police station has a substantial af-fect on the police’s performance.

The issue of staff shortages was discussedat a CPF public meeting held at the MeltonPrimary School last week. The meeting – which was attended by sen-

ior policemanagement, community leaders, councillors, neighbourhood watch bodiesand principals – was organised by the execu-tive of the Kleinvlei Community Police Fo-rum (CPF).CPF chairperson Julian Unthank said he

is concerned about the current spate of gangviolence.“The killings, random shootings and

housebreakings are not the type of commu-nity we envisaged,” Unthank said.

Tackle the problemHe said the CPF had met with the police

a week ago to discuss these issues. In orderto tackle the problem, he said the communi-

ty would have take hands and come up solu-tions.Acting police commander Colonel Ish-

mael Daniels said they are currently experi-encing include a lack of staff.“We do have a plan to try and beat this

problem.“We have the ability to deal with the

gangs, but as you are aware, the police can-not do it alone, we need the help of the com-munity and organisations, and I think it ishigh time for organisations to get involved,”Daniels said.He said gangs are a problem across the Pe-

ninsula.“If we do not have the answer now, rest

assured we will find it,” he added.Captain Gladys October who is in charge

of theKleinvlei police’s visible policingunit, said they have four sectors and only two sec-tor commanders.

Combined forcesAs a result Kleinvlei police often combine

forces with the Mfuleni and Kuils River po-lice stations to execute operations, October-

said. She added that due to absenteeism the po-

lice cannot always afford to put a lot of vehi-cles on the road.“And if there is a serious crime in the area,

that sector vehicle will have to be stand-off,”she said. Many of the staff members who had left

had not been replaced.“Therefore, we rely on NGO’s and neigh-

bourhood structures, we thank them be-cause they extend our visibility,” Octobersaid.Concerned communitymember Ricky Cu-

pido said it was “about time” local govern-ment intervened“People are dying and in view of what is

being said, I don’t think we are going to winthis battle.“I thinks it is unfair that people have to

live in fear,” Cupido said.Daniels said therewere peopleworking on

the problem every day andwhen they antici-pated increased gang activity, more peoplewere put in place. He said government departments were

aware of the problem in Kleinvlei.Police are now to establish a Multi Sector

Forum which will focus on youths involvedin gangs. The police, however, encouragedresidents to help them.“We work with information we receive

from people, but often people do not want totalk and also do not want to give a state-ment,” he said.Ward councillor Wilma Brady said people

fear for their safety.“Oftenpeople donotwant toworkwith the

police because police officers betray them. The police sometimes inform drug lords. They (the people) then become the targets,”Brady said.Melton Primary principal Allison Febru-

ary, fears for the safety of the about 500learners.“If we cannot secure the safety of our chil-

dren, then there is a big problem,” Februarysaid.Resident Gerty Layman she too fears for

the safety of learners. “Some of the learnersdonot evenwant to go to school because theyare afraid. Learners have been stabbed."

Eerste River residents expressed their dis-may at a community housing project whichwill benefit housing beneficiaries fromelsewhere.Speaking after the community meeting

held last week Thursday at the Multi Pur-pose Centre, a disgruntled resident told Ty-gerBurger that unless something was doneabout the current situation, they would beforced to take to the streets in protest. The majority of the beneficiaries in

Eerste River who attended the public meet-ing were current backyard dwellers.Themeeting, atwhichWesternCapemin-

ister for human settlements BonginkosiMadikizela was the guest speaker, sawmany leaving the meeting with more ques-tions than answers.Madikezela visited the area to inform res-

idents about the latest developments takingplace in the area, his spokesperson ZalisileMbali said.Madikizela reported on the second phase

of the Our Pride Project and other projects,Mbali said.Gordon Thomas, ward 16 councillor, was

also on stage.Another provincial project discussed at

the meeting, according to Thomas, was aplanned development in Forest Villagewhich will commence in 2015.According to a fact sheet distributed at

the meeting, the project involves the con-struction of 2 654 fully subsidised BreakingNew Ground (BNG) houses, 1 504 fully sub-sidised service sites and 122 partially subsi-dised Finance Linked Individual SubsidyHouses (FLISP).The project, Thomas said, will include

service plots where people can constructtheir own structures, as well as low cost

houses.“What brought about the unpleasantness

was that 1 009 of the first set of beneficiarieswhowillmove in are beneficiaries of theN2Gateway and Joe Slovo,” Thomas said. These beneficiaries, according to the fact

sheet, could not be accommodated in otherN2 Gateway Phase 1 projects.Levona Coericious, secretary of the

Eerste River and Blue Downs Rate PayersAssociation, said this announcement upsetresidents.“Our community is not sorted out with

houses,” said Coericious. She said there had been several housing

projects in the area but not one of these hadbenefited local residents.“The residents refuse that others get pref-

erence in their area,” she said. The residents, she said, indicated they

will protest.“They will not allow others to enter the

area unless they have been served.”Coericious said Mayor Patricia de Lille

and Premier Helen Zille will have to comeout before any more developments are con-sidered.Chriss Sauls, deputy chair of the nearby

KleinvleiHousingCommittee, saidboth theOur Pride and Forest Village HousingProjects exclude Kleinvlei residents.“We as the community feel they exclude

us. They said they will include all wards, but it seems only ward 16 and ward 17 willbenefit,” Sauls said.He said their committee planned to or-

ganise a meeting with the ward councilloron Saturday 27 September.“We are upset that we are being excluded

and we want to see what we can do aboutit,” Sauls said.Construction of the houses for the Forest

Village project are planned to commence inFebruary 2016.

A local church is advertisingthe Vleis Fees (Meat Festival)in Durbanville. I find this sosad, religion should be teach-ing people compassion, notcelebrating the death ofanimals. If you just investigate for

yourself how badly animalssuffer in industry – in theirconfinement, what is done tothem there, in transport wheremany are injured, and thestress of queuing to be killed -they suffer tremendously.I challenge people who seek

compassion from God to showthat same compassion to theanimals at our mercy. We donot need to support the meatindustry. We can live healthylives on a plant-based diet.Even if you just reduce theamount of meat you eat, youwill reduce the suffering. Please choose compassion.

It is sad to see that mosttownship schools are notequipped with sporting equip-ment. The first stage of thisprocess is to maintain sportsgrounds at schools. At themoment there is not a singleschool in Wesbank with well-maintained sports grounds. Onewonders what activities learn-ers participate in. Many peoplehave become professional sportspersons through sports whichthey started at an early age.One cannot understand why theacademic part of learningcannot be balanced with sport,as it contributes towards thechild’s growth. If South Africa is to become a

great sporting nation, youthsshould be exposed to all sport-ing codes at primary andsecondary level. They will thenbecome professionals at seniorand tertiary levels.Competitive sports among

schools can bring the best outof these young minds – on andoff the field. School governingbodies should engage with localand provincial authorities toensure school playgrounds arewell maintained. There is so much talent in

townships, but there is limitedinfrastructure. Every sportneeds discipline and disciplinecan be transformed to theclassroom.Youths are into drugs and

gangsterism because they haveso much idle time after school.

This is the time they should beusing to practice their sports.

As many pensioners know,Cattle Baron very kindlyprovides retired citizens with awonderful eat-as-much-as-you-like buffet at a reduced ratethree days a week.On Tuesday 9 September I

was at Cattle Baron Durban-ville and could not believe myeyes. An elderly couple sat with

enough food in front of them tofeed six people.I couldn’t believe when they

once more piled their plateshigh with mainly meat. It wasso much I just knew they weretaking food home. How right I was... Back at the

table the women piled all themeat of both their plates ontoher side plate, held it over herbag and all the meat disap-peared into it, while herhusband carried on eating.I was so disgusted in them I

could hardly eat. How canpeople abuse such a wonderfulgift and also spoil it for otherdecent pensioners? Sadly, it’sthanks to people like this thatothers have to suffer.

Heritage Dayis a chancefor us to uniteToday is Heritage Day, also for about thelast ten years known as national braaiday. The day actually commemorates the

famous Zulu King Shaka, who wasinstrumental in uniting Zulu clans into acohesive nation, just as Heritage Dayencourages South Africans to cometogether to celebrate the rich culturalheritage and the diversity of our rainbownation. Is that what we are doing? Standing

together? A lot can be said about how farwe have come, but a lot still needs to bedone. And this should come from ourside, we as the citizens of this amazingcountry. Here a government cannot helpus. If anything, the more the governmentunderperforms, the more we have reasonto stand up and unite against corruption, unfairness, bad service and the rest ofthe items on the service list.We should stand together, even as

members of different political parties, different beliefs and different cultures. We should focus on our common ground– the fact that we are South Africansliving in a country all of us love andcherish. A country we want our childrento grow up in and flourish in safetywhile grabbing endless opportunities. In the words of Nelson Mandela in the

first Heritage Day speech: When thegovernment decided to make this anational day, “we did so because weknew that our rich and varied culturalheritage has a profound power to helpbuild our new nation”. Amen.

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

A journey into jazz has taken a youngmusician onto major world stages asthe guitarist for SA legend Hugh

Masekela. While making music with this legend,

Cape Flats guitarist Cameron Ward is alsoon a high celebrating the launch of his debutCD, but has not forgotten the act of kindnessthat set him on his career path.Music has always been a part of his life

while growing up in Lotus River raised byhis mom, along with his younger brotherand sister. My mom is a teacher and has always sup-

portedmy love formusic,” he said on aquickvisit to Cape Town between a heavy touringschedule with Masekela.“Like many musicians, my music started

in the church and I was sevenwhen I startedplaying drums and then got into bass guitarand piano.”

Love for jazzThe motivation for jazz happened when a

friend introduced him to the music of Jim-my Dludlu.“The first song I heard from him was

Motherland, and I knew that the guitar hadto be my instrument of choice,” he says.“I started to listen to other guitarists as

well and that love just kept growing as I triedto imitate what I was hearing, but I neededto meet other musicians who shared thesame love.”Cameron heard about the legendary Mon-

day Night Jam Sessions at Swingers in Wet-ton and started attending on a regular basis- another life changing moment. From a personal point this is when I got to

know this young guitarist and clearly remem-ber him knocking our ears for a six when hegot going.

Via these sessions he got to hear about theJazzathon at the Waterfront where Jimmywas one of the headline acts.“I knew I had to be there and went with

one of my uncles,” he said.

Meeting Jimmy“We were right in front and I just took in

everything that Jimmy did that night. Thenmy uncle decided hewas going to try and getJimmy to meet me.“I was so excited when it happened and I

was very shy when I got to meet him. I thinkI just froze but Jimmy spoke to me as I toldhim about my dreams in music.“I don’t know what I said but Jimmy said

that he saw something special in me. Hewanted to buy me a guitar!”

That Monday Cameron met Dludlu at astore in Plumstead and bought the young-ster a guitar.“Jimmy then came tomymomand got her

to enrol me in the music college Prompt inAthlone, where I studied music for the nexttwo years,” he says.Since those beginnings the young player

has paid his dues in the business and startedperforming with some of the big names onthe local scene, always impressing the punt-ers with his performances. Then there was the next major move.“From out of the blue I got a call from

Hugh Masekela’s manager, I think he heardme performwith saxmanMoreira Chongui-ca,” Cameron explains.“Bra Hugh’s guitarist was not available

and they wantedme. They flewme to Johan-nesburg, I met with him and the band andstarted to rehearse his music immediately.“This led to me performing with him in

Zimbabwe for our first show and afterwardshe came tome and said he wantedme to jointhe band permanently.”Cameron still continues to tour the world

with the master musician. While there is always a heavy touring

schedule, Cameron always had a dream torelease his own album, and that dream hasnow come true.“It took four years but it’s done,” he says

excitedly.

So much joy“The album is about what the music has

brought me in my life - So Much Joy - thatis the title.“It means a lot to me, it talks about what

I have been through in my musical career.”On the album, Cameron worked with

some of the top young guns in the business.LlewellynGeorge on pianowas the co-pro-

ducer, with Ezra Erasmus on keyboards,Daniel Titus and Donavan Williams also onpiano, Leeroy Sauls on drums, Carlo Joosteon bass,Micheal Phillips on bass guitar, Jas-onWard andGodfreyMgcina on percussion,Neil Engel on trumpet and Ayo Solanke onTenor Sax.The recording also features his wife Jodi,

as well as Simeon Thomas and Liesel Pi-enieken.“I’m excited for the future. There’s still so

much I want to do in music to help otheryouth to discover how it can empower you.”He said the CD is available but he still

wants to host a launch concert in Cape Townwhen there is a break from touring.V To buy the CD Cameron invites you to messagehim on Facebook, follow him on twitter at @wardcameronward or call 083 322 3909 or Jason on 0799026428.

A month long campaign toraise awareness aboutblocked sewers is under-

way, the city’s department ofwater and sanitation said lastweek. Some of the areas earmarked

for the campaign include Klein-vlei, Melton Rose and ForestGlade in Eerste River. The cam-paign will begin on 1 October inthe area, a city official said.“Appointed field-workerswill

be going door-door in the area,”Ambrose Schoeman, water pol-lution control officer, stated ata subcouncil meeting last week.He said the campaign aimed

to educate people on what not toput down their drains, andprop-er grease disposal. The cam-paign will also go to Hout Bay,Mitchells Plain, Milnerton andLanga.During Schoeman’s presenta-

tion he indicated that sewerblockages are a threat to publichealth and the preservation oflimited natural resources.

Increase awarenessHe said an improved under-

standing of sewerage infra-structure may improve sewer-age use practices, and perhapsreduce maintenance costs.Causes of sewer blockages in-

clude solid materials and fats, oil or grease in the system; van-dalism; unwanted objectsthrown into the pipes; buildersrubble; structural defects; rootand sand infiltration.Consequences of blockages

includewaterborne or airbornediseases and sometimes death;the loss of aquatic life, andwasteful expenditure in un-blocking the line.Schoeman said the city spent

R311 million in 2012/2013 clear-ing blocked sewers.Wilma Brady, DAward-coun-

cillor, welcomed the campaign, but said the problem in Kleinv-lei is the lack of sidewalks.

“Why do we not build side-walks that could prevent sandfromentering the sewer system.I am not saying nothing is beingdone, but why do we not spendthe money wisely,” Brady said.Schoeman said the R311 mil-

lion was solely for unblockingsewers, not the campaign.

Serial culpritsMajidie Abrahams, ANC PR-

councillor, wanted to know howprevention of blockages was be-ing monitored.“The biggest problem is your

big companies. Those are theones who get away – the waythey take short-cuts to disposeof their waste.”He said the serial culprits are

restaurants in built-up areas.“They are the culprits be-

cause of the way they dispose oftheir fat.”Schoeman agreed some com-

panies took short-cuts when itcame to disposing waste in or-der to save transport costs.“We also have inspectors who

inspect and visit restaurants tosee if they have grease traps.“We are tackling that aspect,”

Schoeman explained.A total of 1 106 incidents of

blocked sewers have been re-ported inEersteRiver andKuilsRiver this year.

Riaan Witbooi (picture) and Stella Shilangula (right) were among the many runners from EersteRiver Athletic Club who competed in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon at Green Point on Sunday.More than 12 500 athletes competing, with international runners representing 45 countries, madethis a true international race. William Kotile Kibor (Willy Kibor) from Kenya won the 42,2km mainevent in a time of 2:10:45s. Ethiopian longdistance runner Meseret Biru was the first woman tocross the finish line in 2:30:56s.

Rocco aims to nurture new talent

Rocco van Rooyen in action during the recent Commonwealth Games in Scotland.PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Although Rocco van Rooyen is only 21years old, he has successfully compet-ed at the Commonwealth Games and

numerous international events abroad andon the African continent. The Kuils River resident is now on a new

mission to share his experience and tech-nique with others.“I have worked with some great coaches

in the past who helped me get to where I amtoday. Locally I worked with Frans du Toitand Daniel Damon.“A few years ago Imet Kari Ihalainenwho

is the headcoach of Finland. Finland is basi-cally the authority on javelin. I still workclosely with Kari and I try to go over for atraining camp once a year.

Knowledge to share“Although there is still much I would like

to achieve, I feel that I have a lot of knowl-edge to sharewith current andaspiring jave-lin throwers.I have worked with Bellville, Edgemead

and Durbanville high schools in the past. Itgives me great satisfaction to help young upand coming throwers and see their progress.

One of my highlights was competing at theMTBS in Bellville whilst I was still a scholarat Bellville High school. It’s just such a greatevent and I would like to help schools’ jave-lin throwers reach their potential. There isno doubt there is a lot of talent out there thatneeds to be nurtured,” said Rocco.Rocco placed sixth overall at the recent

Commonwealth Games in Scotland. That isnot bad for a rookie, and if you take into ac-count that he competed with a grade 1 liga-ment tear in his elbow, it makes his placingeven more impressive.

Overwhelming experience“That experience was pretty overwhelm-

ing, to compete in front of 60 000 people andmillions of people watching on television. My goal is to be in tip top physical shapecome the next Commonwealth Games andOlympics if I get chosen.“Being a good competitive javelin thrower

is so much more that just throwing. Youhave to dedicate some time in the gym, workon your speed and explosiveness. It’s thewhole package that needs to be up to scratchto compete on the highest level.V Contact Rocco on [email protected] for moreinformation.

New event a treat for avid mountain bikers

For the mountain bike experience of a lifetime, enter the new TransCape MTB Cycle Racewhich will be held from 814 February and will cover a 750km route through the scenic Capefrom Knysna to the finish line in the Stellenbosch/Franschoek region in the heart of the Capewinelands. first time from 8-14 February, will see thefield tested to the limit on a classic routethat will take them from the start in thequaint coastal townofKnysna, to the finishline in the Franschoek region in the heartof the Cape winelands.Covering about 750km, the race, which

has CSA approval, will showcase the bestSouth African mountain biking has to of-fer. While it will provide a stern but fairchallenge for pro riders, dedicated ama-teurmountainbikerswill also find it achie-vablewith every finisher sure to leavewitha true sense of accomplishment. The direction of the race will alternate

each year and has been put together by adedicated and experienced team of sportsenthusiasts.Open to individual riders and teams of

two cyclists (men’s/women’s/mixed) anddisabled competitors, the entry fees areR28 000 per team and R16 000 per solo en-

trant. There will also be a TREAD Buffalocategory (at no additional fee) for teamswith a combined rider weight of at least180kg, and individual division for cyclistsweighing more than 90kg.Race ownerLenoreCollett says the event

is for the discerning mountain biker. “It isan exclusive event which offers a challen-ging seven-stage on-the-bike race coupled

with a first-class off-the-bike experience, with each competitor being treated like aVIP.”Accommodation (included in the entry

fee) will be provided at guest houses andnot in tented camps likemany other eventsof this nature, while the culinary expertiseof renowned chef Nic van Wyk has beenbrought on board to oversee the cyclists’

dietary requirements.“While we aim to provide riders a heal-

thy dining experience on the trip, we stillwant our competitors to get a taste and feelof the Cape. So after a long day in the sadd-le, hungry and tired bodies will be revitali-sed with a tantalising culinary experiencethat will showcase local cuisine,” says Col-lett.Van Wyk, who is also an avid mountain

biker, will incorporatehis brandofhealthyregionally inspired dishes into the dailymeals, adding a gourmet element to theTransCape MTB Cycle Race. The race also has a strong social respon-

sibility focus. “As this event will have afixed route it makes it possible to investand make a sustainable difference in thecommunities the race passes through eve-ry year,” says Collett. The organisers have already teamed up

with Rotary as official charity partner tofacilitate the support of various worthyprojects on the TransCape route, ensuringsustainability.Tomaximise the experience, the field for

the first event will be kept relatively small.Interested mountain bikers are urged to

get their entries in now - by visitingwww.transcapemtb.co.za - to avoid disap-pointment.

RACING: KILLARNEY A BATTLEGROUND FOR TOP SPOTS

Hot shot fights for crown

SA Production Car Championship leader Johan Fourie is seen here in his BMW 335i during anearlier round of the series.

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

Northern suburbs superstar JohanFou-rie is set to smoke Killarney on Satur-day as he takes on the rest of SouthAf-

rica in his bid to be 2014 national Bridgesto-ne Production Car champion.Although he leads the title chase and will

have a home circuit advantage, the BMW335i driver admits things have not gone allhis ownway this season. There is the doublethreat posed by the second and third placedall-wheel-drive Audi S4’s of former champi-on Michael Stephen and the young GennaroBonafede who have ganged up on him thisseason and are only a few points in arrears.Behind them, the T class is a race within

a race as GraemeNathan (VWGolf GTi), Ga-ry Formato (Ford Focus ST) and MichaelvanRooyen (ChevCruze), battle for the over-all lead. There is also growing interest in the En-

genVolkswagen Cup events where the 15 ye-ar old Sheldon van der Linde moved into anarrow overall championship lead at theend of the sixth round at Zwartkops, last

month. Although still in grade 9 and not yetold enough to drive on public roads, theGau-teng youngster has shown tremendous ma-turity in this hard fought series and questi-ons arebeingaskedabouthis possible futurein the international arena. However, he has to deal with hotshots like

Jano van der Westhuizen, John Craig Jnr,Jon Aberdien, Jurie Swart and lady driverAndrea Bate. It won’t be easy.On the flipside, SASports andGTV8’swill

bring back memories of great races of thepast as drivers like reigning champion BigBen Morgenrood (Indy Oil Ford Mustang),Terry Wilford (Hot Wheels Ford Mustang),Franco diMatteo andMackieAdlam (AdlamAuto Jaguar V8), rev on the grid. There are also national single seater ra-

cing car events for Midas Formula VW 2.li-tre and Formula 1600, as well as Power Se-ries participation by theMidas Clubman ca-tegory and Mike Hopkins Powersports,Clubman and Classic motorcycles. Finalpractice and qualifying takes place from08:00 in the morning, with the first of the 14races on the programme due off at 11:05.

SAREL BURGER
