VARIOUS TYPES OF VOLUME METERS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

A VU meter or a Volume Unit Meter is a device

displaying a representation of the signal level in audio

equipment.It was and is usually used in telephone installation

and radio broadcast stations.

WHAT IS A VU METER?

Consumer equipment often features a VU meter not because it is useful but

most often just for its looks. The so called “LOOK

COOL” factor.

PPMAnalog VU meters.

Also an audio monitoring device. Rise time is much lower than Analog VU meter.(10

milliseconds) Good for detecting transient sound and distortions. Fall time is slower.

PPM (PEAK PROGRAM METER)

An audio monitoring device. Good with continuous sound, but not so with transient

sounds. Rise and fall time are both 300 milliseconds.

ANALOG VU METER

Used to measure strength of Audio signal. Takes into account the average strength of the signal of

the audio. Use of VU meters enables more accurate reading, which

will help fine tune production.
