(A) According to type of shape
(1) Radial or Disc cam(2) Cylinrical cam(3) Translation or Wedge cam(4) Conjugate cam(5) Globoidal cam(6) Spherical cam
Types of cams…
(1) Radial or Disc cam
In radial cams, the follower reciprocates or oscillates in a direction perpendicular to
the cam axis.
(2) Cylinrical cam
In cylindrical cams, the follower reciprocates or oscillates in a direction
parallel to the cams axis.
(3) Translation or Wedge cam
In wedge cam the cam has translatory motion and profile of the cam is formed on one side of the cam.
(4) Conjugate cam
In conjugate cam two disc keyed togather and having contact with two
rollers of follower.
(5) Globoidal cam
In globoidal cams have convex or concave type surface cut on circumference of cam
which impart motion to the follower to oscillate about the fulcrum.
(6) Spherical cam
In spherical cam the form of spherical shape which transmit the motion to the follower to oscillate about an axis perpendicular to the
axis of rotation of cam.
(B) According to type Of follower movement
(1) Dwell-Rise-Dwell-Return-Dwell ( D-R-D-R-D ) cam
(2) Dwell-Rise-Return-Dwell (D-R-R-D) cam(3) Rise-Return-Rise (R-R-R) cam(4) Dwell-Rise-Dwell (D-R-R) cam.
Types of Cams…
(1) Dwell-Rise-Dwell-Return-Dwell (D-R-D-R-D) cam
In this type of cam there is dwelling of the follower followed by rise and dwell and
subsequently by return and dwell period.
(2) Dwell-Rise-Return-Dwell (D-R-R-D) cam
In this type of cam there is rise and return preceded and followed by dwell
period of follower.
(3) Rise - Return - Rise (R-R-R) cam
In type of cam there is alternate rise and return of the follower with no periods of dwells. The
follower has a linear or an angular displacement.
(4) Dwell – Rise - Dwell (D-R-R) cam
In this type of cam there is dwelling of follower followed by rise and dwell and
subsequently.
(C) According to type of constraint of the follower
(1) Preloaded spring cam
(2) Positive-Drive cam
TYPES OF CAMS…
(1) Preloaded spring cam
In this type of cam a preloaded compression spring is used for the
purpose of keeping contact between the cam and follower.
(2) Positive - Drive cam
In this type of cam does not required any external force to maintain
contact between cam & follower.
( A ) According to the surface in contact
(1) Knife edged follower(2) Roller follower(3) Flat faced follower(4) Spherical faced follower.
(1) Knife edged follower
In this type of followers are simple in construction and the motion between the follower and the cam is of sliding motion.
(2) Roller follower
In this type of followers sliding motion of knife edged follower is replaced by rolling at low
speeds but at high speeds, the sliding motion of the roller can not be completely eliminated.
(3) Flat faced follower
In this types of followers follower used in preference to roller follower
followers where the space is limited.
(4) Spherical faced follower
In this type of followers to minimize the surface stresses produced in flat faced
follower, the flat end of follower is machined to a spherical shape called
spherical faced follower.
(B) According to motion of the follower
(1) Translatory motion follower
(2) Oscillating follower.
(1) Translatory motion follower
In this type of followers they may have translatory motion.
(2) Oscillating follower
In this type of followers they may have an oscillatory motion.
(C) According to the surface in contact
(1)Radial follower
(2) Offset follower.
(1) Radial follower
When the motion of the follower is along an axis passing through the centre of the
cam, it is known as radial followers. Above figures are examples of this type.
(2) Offset follower
When the motion of the follower is along an axis away from the axis of the cam centre, it is called off-set follower. Above figures are
examples of this type
