Door :-A door may be defined as a framework of wood, steel, aluminium, glass or
combination of these materials secured in an opening left in a wall for the purposes
of providing access to the users of the structures.
It basically consists of two parts i.e. 1) A frame and 2) shutter (leaf)
Functions:-• Very important as respect to planning process.
• Helps in ventilation and admit light in the structure.
• Provide privacy of sound and sight.
• They also provides safety. Etc.
1. From consideration of adequate air circulation within the room, the doors should
be provided on opposite walls facing each other.
2. From consideration of proper space utilisation and privacy, doors should as far as
possible be located near the corner of a room (say about 20cm away from the
corner).
3. The location of the door should meet the functional requirements of the room.
4. The number of doors in a room should be kept minimum to achieve optimum
utilisation of space. Large number of doors besides causing obstruction, consume
more area in circulation.

advantageously provided in places where there is a regular foot traffic of
people entering in and going out of the building especially when it is air
conditioned or situated near in a place where strong winds blow for most part
of the year.
• The leaves and mullions are closed in a vestibule.
• This type of door is recommended for railway goods sheds, garage, godowns,
etc. where high degree of protection and safety is needed.
• The door is normally provided with two shutters. The door shutter is fabricated
from angle iron or channel section frame which is suitably braced with the m.s.
sheet flaps placed horizontally.
• This type of door is considered suitable for shops, sheds, garage, godowns etc.
and in places where the use of hinges for fixing the shutter is to be avoided.

• These doors are extensively used for shops, garages, public buildings,
godowns etc. and in situations where width of opening is large and
provision of hinged shutter becomes difficult for want of space.
• These doors are also used from the considerations of safety and protection
of the property.
• These doors are commonly recommended in situations where light and
ventilation are desired even when the opening is closed.
• These doors are commonly used for show windows, stores, shop fronts and
godowns etc. The door shutter acts like a steel curtain and provides
adequate protection and safety against burglars and fire.
• The shutter consist of thin steel slabs about 1.25mm thick interlocked to
each other and coiled upon the specially designed pipe shaft. When the
area of door opening is more than 10sq. m. the shutter is generally opened
or closed by means of chain pulley blocks.
• The design, construction and operation of rolling grill door is similar to the
rolling steel door in all respects except the type of shutter. The rolling grill
shutter can be manufactured in a Variety of designs to suit the individual’s
choice.
• This type of door is used in situations where besides protection and safety,
visibility and ventilation is also desired. It also used in places like
transformer rooms, substations etc.
• Fire check doors are required to control and restrict the spread of fire
through the door openings thereby minimising the damage of the adjoining
property in the event of fire.
• By provision of fire check doors it is possible to prevent the spread of fire to
communicating rooms and floors i.e. the chimney effect.
• The doors can be of sliding, hinged, manually operated or automatic type.
