Hair loss affects 20% of all women and surveys reveal that they are prone to terrible depression and relationship split-ups. When they lose excessive hair, they tend to feel conspired against for such ordeal. An image-driven society makes hair loss harder to bear for women. Sure hair loss is not a fatal disease but it will slowly destroy a woman’s image, hence self-worth.

But there are women who get through with it just fine. Because they have found the perfect treatment for their condition, their hair loss experience became tolerable enough. Below are just some of the hair loss products available nowadays to treat hair loss in women:

Topical Treatment

Minoxidil is a topical solution not just formulated for men but also for women. The prescribed concentration however differs. For men, this drug comes in 5% concentration while for women, 2% – which is ineffective. This is why 5% Minoxidil solution is instead prescribed but, of course, under professional supervision.

Minoxidil is vasodilator which means that it enlarges the blood vessels. When the hair follicles are inadequately supplied with nutrients due to constricted blood vessels, hair loss happens. And so, Minoxidil works to widen the passageway of nutrients that flow to the hair follicles.

Minoxidil, like any other medications, unfortunately has its share of side-effects. Some users of Minoxidil reported a burning or itching sensation, swelling, shortness of breath, etc., from the treatment. Rogaine is just one of the hair loss products that trade Minoxidil.

Systemic Treatments

Spironolactone (trade name: Aldactone) is a systemic treatment that is specially formulated for women alone. Unlike Minoxidil, Sprinolactone has antiandrogenic properties which disrupt any androgenic activity near the follicles.

Androgenetic Alopecia is a common type of hair loss in women. This is primarily due to the DHT build-up through the androgen receptors in the hair follicles. Spironolactone disrupts DHT build-up by killing the androgen receptors.

This drug is very effective for women. Still according to studies, women with hormonal acne respond more positively to this drug. Side-effects of Spironolactone include fatigue, nausea, and menstrual irregularities. Spironolactone is not prescribed to men because it can lead to impotence, breast enlargement, and reduced sex drive.

Spironolactone systemic treatment appears to be more of a potential in successfully treating female hair loss. Although there are other hair loss products, most of them can have several contraindications for women.
