Acknowledgements
NUEPA has been involved in strengthening educational management information system for the last more than a decade. Initially the mandate was to develop computerized information sys-tem for Primary level of education but confined only to DPEP districts/states. While launching Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in 2001, not only the scope of DISE was extended to entire elementary level of education but its coverage was also expanded from DPEP districts to the entire country. It was 2005-06, when all the districts of the country got covered under DISE for the first time. With Right to Education Act in 2009, the Data Capture Format of DISE was further modified. When Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) was launched, NUEPA extended cover-age of DISE from the Elementary to Secondary and Higher Secondary levels of education and developed on-line software in 2007-08. However, in 2012-13, a single Data Capture Format was developed for the entire school education in view of which DISE software was re-designed and information collected from more than 1.5 million schools.
The Secondary Education in India, State Report Cards: 2012-13 is based on the data received from as many as 228 thousand schools spread over 662 districts across 35 States & UTs. The study of this magnitude cannot be completed without the active involvement and participation of the EMIS professionals at the national and sub-national levels. I am thankful to all the State Project Directors of SSA and RMSA, the state level EMIS Coordinators and district level pro-grammers and Data Entry Operators for supply of data.
I take this opportunity to thank UNICEF, Delhi, in particular Ms Urmila Sarkar, Chief (Educa-tion) and Mr. Begur Ramachandra Rao (Education Specialist) for consistently supporting EMIS activities at NUEPA ever since the inception of DISE and Ms Vrinda Sarup, Additional Secretary, Ms S. Radha Chauhan, Joint Secretary, Ms M. Kaur Dwivedi, Director and Ms C. K. Deshmukh, Director, Department of School Education & Literacy, Government of India, who played a crucial role in facilitating the implementation of DISE in various states.
I am thankful to Prof. R. Govinda, Vice-Chancellor, NUEPA, for his consistent encouragement and guidance.
