Did you know? Our strong research per ormanceenabled us to spend 26m onscholarships or postgraduate

    researchers during 2010/11.

    Finding unding

We are keen to help our postgraduate students secureunding. However, please be aware that nancial supportis limited, so we recommend that you investigateopportunities as early as possible.

In addition to tuition ees, we estimate a ull-timepostgraduate student will need to budget around 800 permonth to cover accommodation, maintenance, recreationand other expenses.

The majority o postgraduate students studying in the UKund their own studies, o ten rom a package made up opersonal savings, amily loans or contributions, part-timework, bank loans and support rom a trust or charity.

On these pages, we have listed just some o the ways inwhich you can und your studies. There is also a table ounding opportunities on pages 165-168. You will ndurther unding in ormation on individual course pages othe online prospectus www.nottingham.ac.uk/pgstudy and on school, department and institute websites.

Research councilsSeven research councils provide unding or tuition andmaintenance to a limited number o UK and other EUstudents. The research councils are the main source ogovernment unding or postgraduate study, but securingunding rom them is a highly competitive process. Theyund di erent subject areas; there ore you need to identi ythe appropriate body and be clear about its procedures.

The level o payment varies, but all awards or homestudents include:

tuition fees maintenance grants contributions towards travel, eld work, academic

materials and other expenses additional sums for disabled students

Lists o universities and programmes or whichstudentships are provided are available rom the researchcouncils. However, you should not apply directly to them. Ingeneral, you should apply through the academic school inwhich you intend to study.

The research councils make awards to students romthe UK and Channel Islands. Students resident in theIsle o Man should consult their education authoritiy.

EU students should note that ordinarily, unless youhave been resident in the UK or a period o three yearsimmediately preceding the start o your course, or areclassi ed as a migrant worker or child o a migrantworker, awards rom all the research councils covercourse ees only.

While it is unlikely they would coverthe total amount needed or ees and maintenance, undingrom a trust or charity could help pay or materials and othercourse costs. Many students build up a port olio o undingby securing a range o smaller awards, so it is worth lookinginto these opportunities.
