REPORT
1.0 AUTHORITY:
This Project has been prepared as per instructions given by Chief Engineer
(Rural) U.P. Jal Nigam Lucknow vide letter No. 510 / 2402-0072 / 11, dated :
29.07.2011. and also Chief Engineer (Jhansi Zone) U.P. Jal Nigam Jhansi has
accordingly suggested to frame a water supply scheme for Raksa Group of
Villages, based on surface source, because ground water is not available in
the area covered under the scheme and also villages covered in this scheme
are situated in dark blocks of district- Jhansi.
1.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
District Jhansi is divisional head quarter of Bundelkhand region of Uttar
Pradesh. It is situated at South West corner of the state between the
latitudes 25o 6' to 27o 9' , North and longitudes 78o 20' to 78 o 58' East. It is
bounded by the district Lalitpur and state of Madhya Pradesh is south district
Hamirpur lies in the East and state of Madhya Pradesh in the West of
district Jhansi . The district Jhansi falls on the broad gauge railway line and is
well connected in the rail and road through out the country.
The climate of the district is tropical in nature which varies from hot dry in
summer to pleasant cold in winter. The Maximum & Minimum temperature
varies between 45o c to 8o c . the average rainfall is 880 mm which
generally occurs between the month of July to September , the total area of
the district is 502842 hectares.
This scheme caters for the drinking water requirement of group of villages
situated in the block Babina of Jhansi District. The water works of the
Schemes is situated in the Pali Pahari Village which is about 12 km from
district head quarter.
1.3 EXISTING WATER SUPPLY ARRANGEMENT AND NECESSITY OF THE
SCHEME :
The inhabitants of Group of villages considered under this scheme meet
their daily requirement of drinking water mostly from open wells and India
Mark-II hand pumps installed in the village. Most of the hand pumps dries up
during summer period. Pipe water supply schemes of Raksa, Sijwaha
villages existed. But Tube well are not successfull in these villages. Villages
included in this scheme experience extreme shortage of water and in the
summer of past years,water supply through tankers have been resorted to in
some villages such as Raksa etc. So group of villages water supply scheme
is proposed from surface source of Simardha Dam (Pahooj river).
DESIGN CRITERIA:.
Design criteria issued by Chief Engineer (PPRD) vide his letter No.
267/PPRD/design criteria dated 25.7.2002. Chief Engineer (Rural) letter No.
3/2042-0024/07 dated 3.1.07. According to these criteria following guide
lines have been adopted.-
1- The schemes will be framed for single village and the same will be
maintained by gram sabha of that revenue village or Jhansi Division
Jal Sansthan Jhansi. .
2- As per criteria, the design period is 30 years and it is expected that
the works of this scheme shall be completed by the year 2013 . As
such the various stages are given below-
(i) Commencement stage Year 2013
(ii) Mid Stage Year 2028
(iii) Design stage Year 2043
3- Rate of water supply is considered as 70 lpcd + 15% wastage i.e.
70+10.50=80.50 lpcd. (This includes an allowance for unaccounted for
water in rural area @ 15% over the actual rate of water supply)
4- Rising main has been designed for ultimate stage of water supply.
5- Pumping plants are designed for 15 year requirement. The
availability of electric supply is limited of 12 hours in a day, during
summers.
(i) The distribution system has been design for ultimate stage.
(ii) The value of coefficient 'C'' Hazen. William formula has been
taken as per the latest guide lines i.e. for G.I. pipe - 100 & D.I.
K-9 pipes 140.
(iii) The value of peak factor has been taken as 3.0.

1.1 Projection of Population-
To arive at design population, the following Conventional methods have been
adopted.
a. Arithmetical Increase Method.
b. Geometric Increase Method.
c.Incremental Increase Metod.
d. Semilog Graph Method.
e Simple Graph Method.
(A) Airthmetical increase Method.
Average increase from table = 2364
(i) Population for the year 2013 = Population of the year
2001 + increase for
1.3 decade.
P 2013 = 14318+1.3x2364 = 17391
(ii) Similarly P 2028 = 14318+2.8x2264 = 20937
(iii) Similarly P 2043 = 14318+4.3x2364 = 24483
(B) Geometrical increase method.
(a) Population of the year Po (1+ra)n
Po = Census Population = 44330
P 2013 = 14318 (1+0.3195)1.3=20531
P 2028 = 14318 (1+0.3195) 1.3=31192
P 2043 = 14318 (1+0.3195) 1.3=47167
(C) Incremental increase method.
Pn = Po + nx+n{1+(n+1)}y
2
Pn = Population afterN decade
Po = Census population of 2001
n= No. of decade
x = Average airthmetical increase
y = Average increaamental increase.
Therefore
P 2013= 14318+1.3x2364+ 1.3 {1+(1.3+1)}x564.66=18969
2
P 2028= 14318+2.8x2364+2.8{1+(2.8+1)}x564.66=25522
2
P 2043=14318+ 4.3x2364+4.3{1+(4.3+1)}x564.66=33346
2
(D) Semi Log Graph Method.
the projection of census has been made in the enclosed Semi-Log Graph.
The populations in different years as worked out are given below.
P 2013= 17000
P 2028 = 26000
P 2043 = 33000
(E) Simple Graph Method.
the projection of census has been made in the enclosed Simple Graph. The
population in the .
P 2013= 17300
P 2028 = 20900
P 2043 = 24400.
The design population for different stages of the scheme worked out by different methods
is tabulated below:-

5 Simple Graph Method. 14318 17300 20900 24400
From the above table, it seems that the forecast of population from increamental increase
method,Simple Graph method and airthmetical increase method are almost similar. But
population figures from semilog graph method and Geometrical increase method are
higher side. Hence simple graph method has been adopted for population forecasting.

2. Rate of water Supply:
The rate of wagter supply has been taken as 70 lpcd. for whole population including
15% losses and wastage of water as per design criteria.
3. Water requirement:
Based on the above mentioned rate of water supply the water requirement for
villages at intial stage, middle stage and ultimate stage work out as under.

4. Source of Water:
The strata of these villages are rockey in nature hence T.W. are not successful in this area.
Hence Simardha Dam, Pahuj river has been taken as a source of supply. So raw water will be
lifted from river and after treatment, it will be supplied into villages through OHT.
5. Raw Water Demand:
Assuming 10% loss of raw water during treatment process.
Hence raw water demand
(a) Initial Stage = 1394x1.10=1533.40
Say 1535 kld.
(b) Midle Stage = 1683x1.10=1851.30
Say 1855 kld.
(c) Ultimate Stage = 1965x1.10=2161.50
Say 2165 kld
6. Design of Raw Water Pumping Plant:
(A) Discharge:
Raw Water requirement for mid stage = 1855 kld.
Assuming 12 hrs pumping discharge of the pump = 1855x1000
12x60
= 2576.39 LPM
Say = 2600 LMP
(B) Head:-
i. Difference of R.L. between top of settling
tank and floor of Intake Well (116.17-101.65) =14.52 m
ii. R.L. Difference between floor of Intake
Well & Invert Level of Intake Pipe. (101.65-89.15) = 12.50 m
iii. Residual Head. = 3.00 m
iv. Losses in bends and pipes of rising main = 7.00 m
= 37.02 m
Say = 37.00 M
Total Head 37 m.
(C) B.H.P. Motor:
B.H.P of Motor = 2600x37 4500x0.70
= 30.54
Add 15% for over loading /voltage fluctuation = 4.58
Total = 35.12 BHP Say 35 BHP.
Hence provide 2 Nos. raw water pumping plants coupled with 35 BHP Motor capable of
Pumping 2600 lpm discharge to a head of 37.00 m. including one no stand bye.
7. Capacity of Treatment works:
The raw water demand including wastage of water at ultimate stage is 2165 kld. As per
design criteria, the most economical system is annexed, the treatment will be designed for
12 hrs. & due to local faults excluding..
So, the capacity of treatment plant will be =2165x24 12
= 4330 kld.
Say 4500 kld.
Say 4.50 MLD.
8. Settling Tank:
Settling tank has been designed for 2½ hrs. detention period.
= 4500x2.50 24
= 468.75 kl.
Say = 470 kl.
Provide two numbers of settling tank each having surface area of 8.50 x 8.50 and effective
depth of 3.30 therefore capacity of square portion of tank =2x8.50x8.50x3.00 = 433.50
Let the side slopes of hopper bottom with horizental depth of hopper bottom are 45o.
hence height = [8.50-0.6] Cot 450
2
= 3.95
Capacity of hopper bottom = 3.95 [8.50x8.50+0.6x0.6 + 8.50x8.50x0.36] 3
= 3.95 [72.25+0.36+5.10] 3
= 102.26
Capacity of hopper portion = 2x102.26
= 204.52 Say = 204.50
Gross capacity of 2 settling Tank = 409.00 + 204.50
= 613.50
Hence Safe.
Required capacity of settling tank is 650 kl.. Thus provide 2 Nos. settling tank with hopper
bottom of following dimension-
i. Length of Tank = 8.50 m
ii. Width of Tank = 8.50 m
iii. Total Height of Tank = 3.30 m
(Square portion)
iv. Height of hopper bottom = 3.95 m Say = 4.00 m.
The above calculations are tentative and may be revised at the time of construction after
having the result of turbidity test of water.
7. Rapid Gravity Sand Filter-
Design of rapid sand filter has been designed as per manual of water supply and treatment.
Rate of filtration as per manual = 100 lpm /m2
Flowing discharge in rapid sand filter = 4500 kld
= 4500x1000 24x60
= 3125
Say 3125 lpm.
Filter area required = 3125 = 31.25 m2 100
Say 32.00 m2
Provide 2 Nos. Filter bed
Area of one filter bed. = 15.63 m2 Say = 16.00 m2
The ratio of length and width shall be between
1.11 and 1.66 averaging about 1.25 to 1.33
Let area of one filter bed. = A
A = LxB
16 = 16.00 x B2
B2 =16.00/1.33 = 12.00
B = 3.46 Say = 3.50
L = 16 / 3.50 = 4.57
Say = 4.60
Thus provide 2 Nos. filter bed each having an area of 4.60 x 3.50 m. = 2 Nos.
8. Clear Water Reservoir at Water Works:
In rural area availability of power supply is limited upto 8 hrs and there is uncertainly in the
timings of power supply also so it may be possible that clear water pumps are unable to run
due to lack of power supply at this end, where as raw water pumps are recieving the power
supply at that end and running. Hence to store the clear water, a clear water reservoir has
been proposed at water works near treatment works. The storage capacity is proposed as 2
hrs. for the better functioning of the scheme.
The total clear water demand = 1965 KLD
2 Hrs. water demand = 1965x2 12
= 327.50
Say = 350 Kl.
