With the explosion in the amount of data transfer needed, companies have started utilizing CDN networks to deliver content to target audiences. To reduce costs and increase availability, video solutions have evolved with multi-CDN approaches. Ustream’s eCDN delivers content deep inside corporate networks and is an extension of Ustream’s software defined CDN (SD-CDN) solution to offer a robust solution for video delivery regardless of network connection limitations. Ustream’s eCDN edges are delivered as virtual appliances and are deployed close to the target audience, inside the corporate network. As a result, eCDN reduces the number of streams that need to be downloaded through ISP links and then distributed internally on the local network.

BENEFITSReduced Network Strain on ISP LinksUstream’s eCDN allows your company to avoid expensive ISP link upgrades and protects you from occasional bursts in traffic.

Improved Video Quality, No BufferingWith our expert capacity planning enterprises no longer have to tolerate low quality videos or buffering and can release video content with crisp image quality and fluid motion.

Cost SavingPostpone or possibly even eliminate the need of network capacity upgrade.

Flexible DeploymentThe installation of the eCDN edges takes minutes and can be deployed to existing hardware.

Versatile Hypervisor SupportInstalled as virtual appliances on VMware® ESXi, Citrix® XenServer™, Microsoft® Hyper-V™ and other hypervisors that support the Open Virtualization Format.

Monitor PerformanceThrough built-in panels, administrators are able to see a health check on nodes and also view concurrent users. IT administrators can configure their eCDN fleet and access useful metrics like network, memory, CPU, & disk usage along with the number of concurrent viewers per eCDN edge.

USE CASES

TOWNHALL MEETINGS TRAINING INTERNAL MEETINGS

Firewall SupportCan be used in conjunction with firewalls, only requiring port 80 (HTTP) and port 443 (HTTPS) to be opened towards the outside of the network. No inbound port is required to be open.

Install Multiple InstancesMultiple instances of eCDN can be installed, enhancing support for a single ISP, multiple ISPs or to support industries with multiple offices, including at a global level.

Mobile DeliveryVideo content distributed through eCDN supports viewing on desktop and mobile devices, which is handled through cloud transcoding to deliver an HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) stream.

Automatic Routing LogicEach viewer pulls video content from the appropriate node and does not disrupt normal delivery over a worldwide network.

Low MaintenanceeCDN edges are automatically updated by Ustream, keeping it in sync with feature updates.

Built-in AdministrationManage eCDN deployment through a web-based panel that is accessible by any modern browser, including tablets.

ASSESSMENT & PORTALBefore every eCDN deployment Ustream examines the topology of the corporate network and collects various information - like number of employees per office locations, public IP addresses, available bandwidth - as a prerequisite for the solution design. Based on the information, Ustream creates the proposed deployment architecture and provisions the customer portal.

The eCDN fleet is managed through the customer portal. After running the installer, edges can be assigned to public IP addresses and locations. The Ustream platform uses these public IP addresses to identify valid customers.

SUMMARYUsing Ustream’s eCDN, combined with the internal facing Ustream Align service, enterprises can create targeted video assets for specific audiences without concerns for congesting local connections. “All hands” meetings, empowering a synchronized workforce, can now easily be achieved and can target all employees, both local and off premise. eCDN offers the final piece in enabling enterprises a complete, internal video solution that can be used to serve restricted content to employees and stakeholders without having to worry about individual setups or internal network strain while tapping into the award winning Ustream platform, which won the Best Streaming Platform Award in 2013, 2014, 2015 and serves more than 5,300 enterprise customers.

Hardware Environment Dedicated or Shared

HypervisorsHypervisors with OVF support (e.g. VMware® ESXi, Microsoft® Hyper-V, Citrix® XenServer)

OSThe appliance is delivered as an Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS OS virtual machine

MemoryMinimum requirement: 4 GB Recommended: 16 GB

Network Interface Recommended 1 Gbit/s or 10 Gbit/s

Max Suggested Viewers per InstanceIn case of 1 Gbit/s NIC ~ 200 users In case of 10 Gbit/s NIC ~ 2,000 users

Inbound Internet Connection BandwidthThe sum of the bitrate of inbound stream versions. Example: 1 channel with 3 resolutions: 1.5 Mbit, 3 Mbit, 8 Mbit average bit rate: 12.5 Mbit

Outbound LAN Connection Bandwidth

Number of concurrent viewers * stream bitrate + overhead. Example: 500 concurrent viewers, 3 Mbit/s average bit rate equals 1.5 Gbit/s + ~10% overhead = 1.65 Gbit/s required outbound bandwidth.
