Tuesday Afternoon Talks- 18 and 25 AugustIan Bryce will give two talks on 18 and 25 August commencing at 1.30 pm. The topic will be Measuring Morality. Ian qualified in science and engineering, and made his career in rocket science. In his retirement he has now turned these skills toward philosophy. Ian spoke to us in April on Fundamental Physics and the Big Questions of Philosophy and those who were present found these discussions most interesting and informative.Measuring Morality - How science can guide us in making ethical decisions. This talk (in two parts) will firstly examine the various attempts to bring ethics onto a scientific footing. A new system will be presented where only one ”ought” premise is needed, and the rest can be derived scientifically. Then, a methodology is presented where each potential outcome is evaluated for its effect on each person, giving a total figure called “merit”, and allowing a comparison of the options. Examples of the calculation applied to real life decisions will be given.

Tutors - 2015 Handbook of CoursesIn July an email or letter was sent to all tutors, asking them to advise me of any alterations/additions to their courses for 2016. My thanks to all who have already replied and I would ask those tutors who have not replied to do so as soon as possible, as I would like to have the first draft 2016 Handbook ready by mid-August.We need more courses for our Blue Mountains’ members. It is not so hard to start a course and we will help find accommodation, if required. However, several tutors use their own homes to run successful Art, Astronomy, Computing, Poetry and Musical Appreciation courses. Other courses that may be successfully run for small groups are: Book Reviewing, Card Playing, Chess, Mah Jong, Scrabble, Cooking, Playing Musical Instruments, Embroidery and Quilting etc.Rick Todd, Curriculum Convenor, 4739 3160, E: [email protected]; or [email protected]

Isn't it great to have computer classes? – BUT Do You Need Personalised Tuition? But they do not work for everyone. Many students come to me and say that they had no idea what was going on. If this is the way you feel you may prefer to have a more individual approach. Most people appear to own a laptop these days, so if you come to Wentworth Falls please bring your own laptop. There are never more than 2 students in my class. And there are 4 classes throughout Thursday. My email address is [email protected] and my phone is 4757 1200I look forward to meeting some of you. Mindful LivingSt Hilda’s Anglican Church, Katoomba Street, KatoombaTuesday, 9.30 am to 11.30 am.Mindfulness practices have been valued for thousands of years in Vedic and Buddhist traditions. In recent years, some of these ancient practices have been adapted within modern Western psychology to develop programs to improve general well-being and happiness, and to help treat a number of mental health issues. This course explores mindfulness practices in both Eastern and Western traditions, including simple practical exercises that can be incorporated into daily life. Handouts will be provided, questions and discussion are strongly encouraged.

Introduction to Award winning Australian Novelists.Room 1, Penrith School of Arts, Castlereagh Street, PenrithFortnightly - Wednesday 12 noon-1.30 pm Through fiction and memoir we shall examine the work of selected novelists from Western Australia,

Tasmania, NSW and Qld. What do they tell us about “place” (their unique landscape)? Can we identify with the national and

social history in their stories? What influenced a young girl from outback NSW to eventually become the president of one of

America’s most prestigious colleges? How did the son of confused migrant parents raised in rural poverty become an internationally

esteemed living philosopher? Following publication of two of his earlier novels, why did a writer abandon his comfortable life to work

with Kiwi shearers, and what did he gain from it? Let’s read and discuss these fascinating writers, and their larger-than life fictional works!Contact Sharon Willett-Davies – Phone 4754 5763 or email: [email protected] NOTE CORRECTION TO EMAIL ADDRESS

Suggestion BoxIt has been suggested that we have a “Suggestion Box”….that’s a good suggestion!!The physical box, like a post box, has largely been replaced by Email, but the traditional purpose of obtaining comments, questions, and requests, still exist and is useful for collecting information with input from our members and guests.Considering how wide spread U3A Nepean Blue Mountains is, there are a number of ways of

submitting your suggestions, by Email to u3apenrith.org.au or by letter to P.O. Box 958 Penrith 2751 or simply drop a note in the box on the door of the office at Penrith School of Arts.
