Coins in the UAE are called fils. The first coin were going to look at is 5 fils. It has a picture of a fish on one side, and the opposite side of the coin has the Arabic numeral 5. Can you cross out all the 5 fils coins below?

On the side with the fish, it says in Arabic, "Clean seas mean extra nutrition for mankind." So by working to keep the water clean and free from garbage, we increase the amount of fish and other sea life that people eat.

The great thing about this coin is that you can practice skip-counting by fives. Write the amount of fils next to each coin or group of coins:

The next coin is 10 fils. It has a picture of a dhow on one side, and the opposite side of the coin has the Arabic numeral 10. Its the same color as the 5 fils coin, but a little bigger. Can you circle all the 10 fils coins below?

A dhow is a type of boat. Actually, there are several different kinds of dhows, depending on what they are used for. Since the UAE sits on the coast of a peninsula, the sea has always been used as a source for food and a road to travel to other countries.

This coin is even easier to count than the first! Skip count by tens. Write the amount of fils next to each coin or group of coins:

There are both sand gazelles and mountain gazelles in the UAE. The local species of Oryx became extinct as a wild species in the early 1960s; but since then onyxes that had been kept by Sh. Zayed were bred and now there are some small herds in the Abu Dhabi emirate.

Bills in the UAE are dirhams. The smallest bill is worth 5 dirhams. The Arabic side shows the Central Souq in Sharjah. The English side shows a view of the coastline in the Northern Emirates. Can you find the two 5-dirham notes below?

The Sharjah Central Souq is also called the Blue Souq, because of the blue tiles used to decorate the outside of the building. It was built in 1979 and has become a landmark in Sharjah, both because of its design and the range of things you can haggle over and buy there.

The UAE is the only country in the Arabian Peninsula that uses dirhams. Most of the countries use riyals, with two using dinars. Riyals Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, Qatar Dinars Bahrain, Kuwait Dirhams United Arab Emirates

The term dirham is derived from the Greek currency, drachma. Ancient Greek empires expanded over much of the Middle East, and travel and trade brought Greek influences into the region.
