matchup centerFOUNTAIN OF YOUTHThere will be 10 freshmen on the UAH roster this season, the third-highest total in the NCAA. Only two teams have more first-year players, and one of those teams is North-eastern.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEWThe team will be wearing brand new home and away uniforms in 2013-14. The road blues will sport “Alabama Huntsville” on the chest, while the home whites will script “UAH”. The team will also wear an alternate gray uniform, along with their camouflage jerseys on Military Apprecia-tion Weekend.

MILITARY BACKGROUNDSCoach Corbett spent the past 10 seasons at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, while assistant Matty Thomas is a Naval Academy graduate.

BETWEEN THE POSTSWith John Griggs graduating and the departure of Gregg Gruehl, the team is left with one goalie on the roster who saw time last season. CJ Groh appeared in just three games overall. Freshman Carmine Gueirrero and Matthew Larose are expected to contribute immediately between the posts.

TRADITION CONTINUESA program that began back in 1979 has seen its ups and downs throughout its history. From a National Champion-ship program in the mid-1990’s to a CHA contender in the early to mid-2000’s, UAH Hockey has landed in the presti-gious WCHA. A new era of Charger Hockey begins October 11.

UPTEMPO PACEAfter averaging only 17 shots last season as a team, the Chargers averaged 28 shots in their series at Northeastern, totaling 56 shots over the weekend. Brears led UAH with shots while Jack Prince and Stephen McKenna took five shots each while 10 other players accounted for two or more shots.

2013-14 UAH CHARGER HOCKEY

head coach mike corbettMike Corbett is entering his first season as head coach for the UAH Hockey program, having spent the past 10 years as an assistant at Air Force includ-ing serving as the team’s associate head coach in the 2012-13 season. “Mike Corbett has spent the last decade recruiting elite young men to the United States Air Force Academy and winning championships,” said UAH Director of Athletics Dr. E.J. Brophy. “We are very confident that he is the man to lead Charger Hockey into the prestigious WCHA and back to win-ning on a consistent basis here at UAH.” During Corbett’s time with the Falcons, the team won five Atlantic Hockey Association tournament championships and also appeared in the NCAA tournament five times with berths in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012. Winners of the AHA regular season title in 2009 and 2012, Air Force ranks in the top 10 in the country in winning percentage over the last seven seasons while stringing together seven consecutive winning seasons for the

first time in program history. On the ice Corbett focused on the Air Force blue line, and the team established Falcon records for fewest goals allowed per game in three straight seasons from the 2006-07 year to the 2008-09 campaign. Under his watch, the Falcons featured three AHA Defensemen of the Year winners, and Air Force has consistently ranked among the best in the nation in fewest shots allowed per game. With Corbett assisting in the program’s recruiting effort, the team also featured two AHA Player of the Year honorees, three Division I All-Americans, and 17 all-conference selections. During his time on the bench, the Falcons also had the only Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist in AFA history. No stranger to WCHA hockey, Corbett was a defensive force during his playing days at Denver from 1992-97 where he was an alternate captain for two seasons and a two-time WCHA All-Academic Team member. Ad-ditionally, in 1997 he was a finalist for the NCAA Hockey Humanitarian Award. He graduated from Denver in 1996 before also earning his master’s degree from the university in 1998. After his time in Denver, Corbett served as the head coach for the Butte Irish in the America West Junior Hockey League from 1997-2000, earning AWHL Coach of the Year honors in 1997-98. He then led the league’s Billings Bulls for a season before joining the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League in 2001. After that stint, Corbett served as the director of the Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association in 2002 prior to join-ing the Air Force staff.

Corbett and his wife, Stacey, have two children, Jordan (22) and Mayson (17).
