This issue introduces the incoming MHA class of 2019, catches up with the second year students, and highlights a few of the program’s events over the summer months. With faculty and alumni support, MHA students are able to ulize this newsleer to further de- velop our network of healthcare execuves. Thank you. ~ Memory Waddle, MHA Student Associaon Communicaons Officer Student News Welcome to the New and Returning MHA Students! We would like to extend a warm welcome to the MHA students returning from their summer administrave residencies. Summer administrave residencies provide students with an experienal learning opportunity in a healthcare environment and are a required component of the MHA Program. These students are currently in their second year of the MHA Program and preparing for administrave fellowships and exploring healthcare management career opportunies upon graduaon from the program. We are also excited to welcome our newest class of incoming students to the MHA program. There are 18 new students starng this fall - this is the largest incoming class in the history of the program. The next few month hold excing opportunies with the monthly “Lunch with the Administrator” meengs, the Arkansas Hospital Associaon Meeng, and the University of Kansas Medical Center Case Compeon! The first year MHA students have started their professional development training with a half day Excel workshop. The Excel workshop provided students with an opportunity to explore the various tools and applicaons of Excel. Interested in the UAMS MHA Program? Congratulaons to Dr. Saleema Karim, who was awarded the Student Council Award for Out- standing Public Health Faculty Member, presented at the College of Public Health Convocaon in May. Dr. Hsueh-fen Chen & colleagues had studies published in the Ameri- can Journal of Managed Care (Does paid versus unpaid supplementary caregiving maer in preventable readmissions?) and the Journal of Racial & Ethnic Disparies (The impact of race and neighborhood racial composion on preventable readmissions for diabec Medicare home health beneficiaries). In July Dr. Michael Morris began his 3 year appointment as a mem- ber of the Healthcare Financial Management Associaon’s (HFMA) Board of Examiners (BOE). The BOE provides oversight for HFMA’s pro- fessional cerficaon programs. Dr. Morris also began a 2 year ten- ure as chair-elect of the Healthcare Finance Faculty Forum for the As- sociaon of University Programs in Health Administraon (AUPH). Jyric Sims is CEO of Medical City, Fort Worth. Mr. Sims received a Master of Health Administration from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and holds an undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University (LSU). He was also awarded the 2016 UAMS Alumnus of the Year. Mr. Sims has also received numerous other honors, including the prestigious Modern Healthcare 2015 Up and Comers Award, 2015 Millennial of the Year by New Orleans Social Renaissance, 2015 LSU Alumni Spotlight Award and 2014 Top Business Professional of South Florida by Legacy Magazine. What advice do you have for executives seeking to develop a positive physician-administrator relationship? Trust. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. If you can’t do it, express that and detail why—avoid the “slow no”. Get out of your office. Get closer to what your primary focus should be which is treating patients. Round and make sure you are visible and engage your staff. Understand that providers are highly educated, motivated, and are centered around data. Make the data simple, digestible, and accurate. Physicians and clinicians are the professionals that make clinical decisions—respect that and involve them on the front end to ensure their buy-in. What advice do you have for current and future health administrators? You have to be willing to relocate in order to advance your career, and be an organization “intrepreneur”. Within your organization, you have to figure out how to add value through personal capital and influence in order to ascend in the organization. Spend more time focusing on strengths and being yourself rather than solely focusing on weaknesses. Focus on your “why” you got into healthcare and tell it often. What are some challenges you face as a healthcare leader? Moving out to move up takes a personal toll. Make sure your family has a good understanding of what your job requires and everyone is on the same page. Also, balancing the trade off between speed and accuracy. As CEO, you will want you to act quickly and make decisions since time is limited. You have to balance speed of your decision making with the accuracy/completeness of the information you have.
