Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) was born in Norway in 1978 and moved to the United States in 2001 to study composition at the Juilliard School in New York City.

Primarily a composer for choir, orchestra/symphonic winds and for piano, Ola’s compositions are performed all over the world. Many of his choral works are featured on the Phoenix Chorale’s bestselling Northern Lights album, which is devoted entirely to his music for choir. His debut album as a pianist-composer, Stone Rose, was released in 2007, followed by Piano Improvisations in 2012.

Presently a full-time composer based in the US, Ola is also very interested in film; his music sometimes draws inspiration from movies and cinematic music.

Ola Gjeilo (sprich: Jäilo) wurde 1978 in Norwegen geboren und ging 2001 in die USA, um an der New Yorker Juilliard School Komposition zu studieren.

Als weltweit gespielter Komponist konzentriert er sich vor allem auf Werke für Chor, für (Blas )Orchester und für Klavier. Eine breite Auswahl seiner Chormusik findet sich auf dem Album Northern Lights, gesungen vom Phoenix Chorale unter der Leitung von Charles Bruffy. Sein Debutalbum als Interpret eigener Klavierwerke erschien 2007 unter dem Titel Stone Rose, im Jahr 2012 folgte Piano Improvisations.

Gegenwärtig lebt er in den USA und ist hauptberuflich als Komponist tätig. Sein besonderes Interesse gilt dem Kino; Filme und Filmmusik bilden eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für sein Schaffen.
