3. A Space-Identifying Ubiquitous Infrastructure and its Application for Tour-Guiding Service

Introducing the latest ubiquitous device which is called Ubiquitous Communicator (UC).

Difference between Passive RFID and Active RFID

- Route navigation

- Tour guiding system

- providing a variety of information rather than only navigating

route for the user.

Key element: Are they only used for navigation services?Key element: Are they only used for navigation services?

In the ubiquitous computing environment, many computers and sensors are distributed to the urban environment. It is easy to get information at everytime, everywhere based on the ubiquitous computing and sensor network.

Communication distance between the device and its system (Satellite System, network server and machine) strongly affects the size of service area.

Common problemCommon problem

2D street navigation system in the

urban environment is no longer

enough information for location

based services!!

Mobile phone-based location serviceMobile phone-based location service

GPS is one of the most familiar devices in location based systems.

Navitime

Pedestrian users who uses GPS positioning navigation service often feel some confusion near subway-exits surrounded by tall buildings.

Destination via:

- walking, driving cars, train, buses and even transfer information for airlines and subways

Available in:

- Japan, China, and USA

What is Total Navigation service?

How pedestrian can be navigated in crowed urban environment and the underground streets by total navigation system?

The GPS repeater system

- When GPS is not available, the locations of nearby cell towers are used to produce a location estimate. - The gpsOne solution combines GPS and cell-based data to achieve the most accurate positioning outside and inside buildings.

- Pedestrian can use 3D navigation system

RFID : Key element and common problemRFID : Key element and common problem

RFID tag recognition system

- RFID tag is especially used for a ticket gate. This RFID tag system is only available in short communication distance.

Is it only for a ticket gate?

There is a rechargeable contactless smart card. Suica stands for “Super Urban Intelligent Card”. The card incorporates contactless RFID technology.

'SuiPo,' or Suica Poster, which uses a combination of IC card ticket ‘Suica’ and Internet accessible mobile phone. Customers can get e-mail information by touching their SUICA on the reader located near the poster.

Entertainment tool - Free of charge

Ubiquitous communicator : Key elementUbiquitous communicator : Key element

When the user arrive the place of an artwork, the device inform you the location and introduce the artwork and the artists by showing graphic images, a movie with audio and text description on the display.

Indoor: An infrared beacon is installed on a ceiling.

Outdoor: Active RFID tag is installed in a lamp post.

- Active RFID tags have their own internal power source.

Sensors: Infrared beacon and Active RFID tag

Active RFID tag (UC)

Passive RFID tag (SUICA)

Advantage Long range Small, No battery

Disadvantage Need battery,

Expensive, Not small

ConclusionConclusion

Route navigation and mapping.

Location services do not only support positioning navigation for pedestrians, but also a small devices and its system provides a innovative service as an entertainment tool.

The user wants to get multiple information which relates to their interests or their real time situation.
