INTRODUCTION

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is the latest release of Ubuntu Linux.

You can obtain a copy of Ubuntu by downloading the ISO image or by requesting for the

CD/DVD from the official website.

System RequirementsSystem Requirements

After obtaining the CD/DVD you should check whether your system meets the minimum

hardware requirements to install & run Ubuntu. Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit PC

and Intel based MAC architectures. At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the

alternate install CD (384 MB of RAM is required to use the live CD based installer).

Installation requires at least 4 GB of disk space.

If you find that your system meets these requirements you can proceed with the

installation.

Beginning InstallationBeginning Installation

After you switch on the computer place the Ubuntu CD/DVD in the tray of your CD/DVD

drive and launch the BIOS configuration tool & under the Boot settings set the CD/DVD

drive as the primary boot device. This will enable the system to boot using the Ubuntu

CD/DVD. Save your settings & restart the computer. Now you are ready to install

Ubuntu.

When the system restarts it will boot using the CD/DVD and you will be greeted by a

screen as shown above.

It has five options

1.Try Ubuntu without any change to the computer.

2.Install Ubuntu.

3.Check for CD defects.

4.Test Memory.

5.Boot from first hard disk.

If you wish to try out Ubuntu before installing it on your computer select the first option.

If you wish to install Ubuntu directly select the second option.If you wish to check the cd

for any defects select the third option.If you wish to check for any memory errors select

the fourth option.

If you wish to cancel the installation and boot from the hard-disk,select the third option.

Since we are going to install Ubuntu select the second option.

After you select the second option you will be greeted by a screen as shown below.

You will have to wait some time while some essential files required for the installation

are copied to the memory.

Now we are ready for the actual installation process.

After the files are copied you will be asked to answer a few questions.

Select the language of your choice & click Forward.If you want to back out from the

installation process select Quit.

Now you will be asked to select the Time Zone & city of your choice.

Select the Time zone of your choice & proceed by pressing the forward button.

After that you will be asked to select the keyboard layout.

Select the keyboard layout of your choice.You can type in the box to test your new

keyboard layout.After selecting the keyboard layout click on Forward.

Now comes the most important part of the installation-Partitioning the

Hard disks.

You are given two choices

1. Guided partition- For first time users. It will partition the entire disk space.This is

useful for installing Ubuntu on an empty hard disk.

2. Manual partition- We can use this option for partitioning the disk according to your

choice.This option is used when there is a previous partition on the disk you do not wish

to delete or you want to install more than one operating system.

Select the Manual check-box & click Forward.

Then click on Undo changes to partitions.

You are now left with free space.

Double Click on New partition .

Type the size of the root partition in megabytes. Remember to leave some space for the

swap partition about 500MB.Select the partition as Ext3 journaling file system and

select '/' as mount point & click ok.

Now the first partition is mounted as the root.Now we need to partition the rest of the

free space as swap.

Click on the free space & select New partition.

Use the partition as swap area & then click ok.

Select the Format check box of the partition with Mount point / and then click on

Forward.

Type your name & user name in the specified area. Also enter a user password .Then

click Forward.

Click on install.

Note-After clicking on install you cannot undo any changes made to the partition.

Finally if the installation is successful,you will be asked to restart the system.

Click on Restart now.You will also be asked to remove the disc before restarting.

That's it! Now you are ready to use Ubuntu.

To install new applications you can use the package manager.Programs can also be

installed via Add/Remove menu which can be found under the Applications Menu in

the top panel of the desktop.
