Mojave Desert California April 2015With this successful rocket test by UC San Diegorsquos chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space UC San Diego became the first university to successfully design print and test a 3-D printed rocket These UCSD undergraduates were funded by NASA and Lockheed Martin

Coming into UC San Diego research wasnrsquot part of my plan I knew what I wanted to do go to school get my degree become a Speech Therapist But research fell into my lap and Irsquom thankful it did For one year I worked as a student researcher under Professor Gedeon Deaacutek in UCSDrsquos Cognitive Development Lab I focused on how mother-child interactions affect vocabulary growth

Ultimately this experience has inspired me to pursue a PhD Aside from working in a lab I was able to develop close relationships with my fellow ldquolabbiesrdquo These friends and mentors have guided me through classes and kept me on track with my graduate school applications I would encourage everyone to seek a research position especially since the opportunities at UC San Diego are so abundant

Why did you choose UC San DiegoIts well-established reputation and location I was looking forward to walking to class each day with beautiful weather and coastal breezes I visited the campus during my sophomore year of high school and fell in love with it I love the unique art structures scattered around campus Also I love how diverse the student body is You get the multi-cultural interactions of traveling without having to leave campus

How easily did you transition to life in the United States Whether a student is in-state out-of-state or international the transition to UCSD is something every student experiences There were some lifestyle differences moving to the US but nothing that made me feel out of place Irsquove built my community by trying to connect with as many people as I can whether thatrsquos by joining student orgs or just having conversations with new people
