Investing in the Future

Dear Friends,

Thanks to you, UC Santa Barbara has seen a major upswing in the total number

of alumni and parents making gifts to the university. Your appreciation of the

increasingly essential need for private support — underscored by the impact that

the decrease in state funding has had on public

education — has fostered this growth. n  Bolstered

by this impressive increase — 15 percent over last year

— private philanthropy in 2012–2013 propelled The

Campaign for UC Santa Barbara to the $800-million

mark on a steady march toward our goal of raising

$1 billion. n  All told, the fiscal year ending in June

brought UC Santa Barbara over $52 million in annual

private support. A gift of $9.1 million received in early

July provided early, major momentum for a new year

of significant investment in the campus by private

donors. Annual leadership gifts such as these have

been the catalyst to our university’s increased fundraising numbers over the last two fiscal

years. n  The engagement and advocacy reflected by such generosity are among the keys

to helping UC Santa Barbara sustain and enhance its reputation for cutting-edge research,

outstanding teaching and meaningful public service. They also signal an unwavering

belief in what is and will always be the university’s greatest resource: students. n  Your

gifts make a critical difference — especially for students. The University of California was

founded on the very idea of providing affordable public higher education for all eligible

Californians. n  For your commitment and generosity, we extend our sincere appreciation.

Together we will ensure UC Santa Barbara’s excellence now and for future generations.

Marcy Carsey, Chair UC Santa Barbara Foundation

The Campaign for UC Santa BarbaraEnhanced by the devoted involvement

of our campus partners and volunteers

across the nation, The Campaign for UC

Santa Barbara has greater energy and

commitment than ever. each week, new donors engage with

our efforts, paving the way for private funding that is truly

transformative for the university.

The campaign today stands at $808 million — and counting

— in the initiative to generate $1 billion in private funding for

our campus. This achievement

would be impossible without the

guidance and inspiration from

our Chancellor and his wife,

Dilling, our greatest and most

steadfast fundraisers.

our growing number of

leadership donors is also essential

to our success. Gifts of $3 million

or more

now make

up 30

percent

of our

campaign

totals

— currently a combined $247 million.

in fact, our overall accomplishments in

fundraising reflect the larger gifts that are

raised in partnership with our faculty. it

is the exposure and connection to their

innovative and compelling research and

programs that attracts and sustains a high

level of funding from this critical donor

group.

Leadership gifts are only part of the

story. Some additional key highlights:

• Direct financial support for

our students remains a priority. The

campaign has so far raised more than $60

million in student scholarships, fellowships

and awards.

• Campus legacy commitments

are crucial to sustaining private support.

The number of bequest and estate gifts are increasing, now

making up nearly 12 percent of our total campaign dollars.

• Alumni giving grows every year, as former Gauchos

re-engage and invest in the campus. our alumni participation

rate is the highest in the UC system in terms of number of

alumni donors.

• The re-engagement of so many alumni is indicative

of our campaign’s successful and ever-growing outreach efforts

— efforts that have so far connected nearly 60,000 new donors

to the campus, and netted a 15 percent increase in giving in the

last year.

Lastly, our campaign owes much credit and gratitude to

our regional Campaign Committees. Led by volunteer alumni,

parents and trustees, these committees help raise private funds

from constituents in their respective regions and host special

events to promote UC Santa Barbara. our committee members

have thrown over 50 such events in the last year alone. in the

last two years, they have directly raised more than $10 million.

Physics professor Joseph Incandela holds the Yzurdiaga Chair in Experimental Science.

“To make the human condition

better. We have great productivity

in this country based on what we

have found scientifically. When you

want to leave a legacy, you want to

leave it as productive and as close to

what you believe in as possible. We

decided to go for something that’s

very narrow — the physical sciences

— to do it at UCSB, and to not

distribute all the investment income.

You always keep some so the corpus

grows, which means, in essence,

that you serve humanity forever.”

With a passion for science

and faith in its potential

for life-changing

advancements, pat and

Joe Yzurdiaga gifted the campus with a

$1.5 million endowed chair in the field.

The first incumbent to the pat and

Joe Yzurdiaga Chair in experimental

Science is already a star in science circles,

and is becoming increasingly familiar to a

broader audience: Joseph incandela.

A professor of physics at UCSB

and spokesman for the Compact Muon

Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the

european organization for nuclear

research’s (Cern) Large Hadron Collider

(LHC), incandela is a key player on the

international team of scientists credited

in 2012 with observing the long-sought

Higgs boson particle. With six fellow

LHC project members, he was awarded

a 2012 Special Fundamental physics prize

by the Milner Foundation. The group got

additional attention for their discovery

when the theorists who first predicted

the boson’s existence won the 2013

nobel prize in physics.

“Science empowers humanity at the

same time as it enlightens,” incandela

said. “The pat and Joe Yzurdiaga Chair in

experimental Science gives me a license

to be creative, to think more broadly,

and potentially go after bigger questions

in science. i would go so far as to say

that it even inspires me to do this.”

The Yzurdiagas also donated

$750,000 for graduate fellowships in

science in the last year, further bolstering

the student support they have been

providing since 2008.

Fostering Community, Creating Opportunities

Since 2006, UCSB’s Guardian Scholars Program has provided a multifaceted support system for former foster youth pursuing a university education.

Former foster youth enrolled at

UC Santa Barbara are upending

national statistics about such

students, graduating at a similar

rate as the general freshman class.

Their success owes much credit to the

campus’s Guardian Scholars program.

By bringing together staff and

student volunteers from across campus

to serve as a network of resources, the

initiative provides multifaceted support

to the 150 UCSB students who, having

aged out of the foster care system, are

now — quite literally — on their own.

The Guardian Scholars have received

a huge boost from a generous $500,000

challenge pledge in 2013 by UC regent

Hadi Makarechian and his wife, Barbara,

and a matching gift of $530,000 from

the Conrad n. Hilton Foundation. The

funds will establish an endowment for

the ongoing support of staff to oversee

day-to-day operations and take a more

proactive approach than the volunteers

are able to provide.

in addition, in 2012 and 2013, the

Makarechians contributed $100,000 to

the program and, for two years running,

have hosted a holiday party for UCSB

Guardian Scholars.

“We are delighted to provide a

small help to this huge cause, helping

bright students that have overcome

adversity in their lifetime and are at a

prestigious school such as UCSB,” Hadi

Makarechian said.

That assistance will include

academic support, enrichment services,

advocacy, career guidance, peer

networking, housing and financial aid

assistance and an emergency fund.

These resources will enable the students

The Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree Endowment Fund benefits students facing a barrier to education, such as financial need or learning disabilities.

With a devout belief in the

transformative power

of education — and

a passion for helping

people achieve that goal — Lady

Leslie ridley-Tree has been supporting

scholarships at UC Santa Barbara since

1998. Her latest gift of $500,000

created the Lady Leslie ridley-Tree

endowment Fund, meant to benefit

outstanding students facing a barrier

to education, such as financial need or

learning disabilities.

over the years ridley-Tree has

by providing financial support,

encouragement and mentoring. Her

“I believe in education. I believe

that the only way that one

can progress in life is through

knowledge, and that the easiest

way to get knowledge is through

education. For many people it’s not

available. In my life, I’ve always,

always tried to help make it

available in some way. That’s been

an earnest drive within me.”

such a lifesaver for me,” McCurn said.

“it made a huge difference. The very

existence of this scholarship says to

learning-disabled students like myself:

‘You guys are a priority. Your learning is

a priority.’ And i’m really grateful for it

so much.”

alumna since 2012, she is a UC Santa

Barbara Foundation trustee and co-chair

of The Campaign for UC Santa Barbara.

But it was her desire to offer an

extra boost to struggling students that

first inspired ridley-Tree to engage

with UCSB. The new scholarship fund

is a natural fit for the former educator

and community activist who once had

trouble in school herself.

“it was always hard for me

because i was the kind of student that

was, quote, ‘never working up to her

potential,’” ridley-Tree recalled. “i was

probably dyslexic but nobody knew it.

“There are so many bright people

who don’t get a chance,” she added.

“education helps so much. education

is the key to everything and it doesn’t

matter what kind. i always say to young

people, ‘You will find that you will use

everything you learn along the way.

nothing is wasted. That’s a wonderful

surprise in life.’”

For recent UCSB doctoral grad

Alexis McCurn, the support — both

moral and financial — that she received

from ridley-Tree was a surprise in itself.

“The ridley-Tree scholarship was

to better navigate the university system

in the absence of parents or guardians

who typically provide guidance and

support.

“i’m very happy to reconnect

with UCSB, particularly in the context

of awarding a grant to support the

Guardian Scholars program, because it

helps foster youth make the transition to

life in a university setting,” said Steven

M. Hilton, president, chairman, and chief

executive officer of the Conrad n. Hilton

Foundation and a UCSB alumnus (’74).

“not only does the Guardian

Scholars program provide financial

assistance to students in need, the

program also makes sure they have

access to mentoring and emotional

support,” he added. “The goal is to

help these resilient young adults achieve

independence and reach their full

potential. i’m particularly pleased to be

able to help these deserving scholars at

my alma mater.”

Toward a Better Tomorrow

The tidewater goby, a diminutive

fish that’s been on the

endangered species list since

1994, may soon see new

habitats created on its behalf, courtesy

of a unique partnership between UC

Santa Barbara and The Trust for public

Land (TpL).

Aiming to restore and preserve

the wetlands on the upper Devereux

Slough — which 50 years ago was filled

with topsoil to make way for recreation

— the pair is teaming to return ocean

Meadows Golf Course to its natural

state. The project will ultimately open to

the public an expanse of land extending

some three miles along the ellwood

Devereux coast in Goleta by connecting

several existing preserved properties.

A national leader in raising money

for conservation, the nonprofit TpL

purchased 63 acres of the now-closed

Goleta course with $7 million in grant

money. Subsequently gifting the

property to UCSB, which will serve as

long-term stewards of the land, TpL will

also help raise funds for its restoration.

“The UCSB campus is proud of its

efforts to acquire and set aside large

portions of the Devereux and West

Campus bluffs area for reserve and open

space,” said Chancellor Henry T. Yang.

“The addition of the ocean Meadows

property will allow us to collectively

implement a more inclusive, coherent,

and comprehensive management plan

for the entire Devereux Slough. We

look forward to working together

[with TpL] to preserve this beautiful

and ecologically important area

for education, research, and public

enjoyment, now and for generations to

come.”

Whether it’s illuminating

the causes of California’s

exceptional plant diversity

or dispelling the myth

that jellyfish blooms are increasing

throughout the world’s oceans, UC

Santa Barbara’s national Center for

ecological Analysis and Synthesis

(nCeAS) is always at the expanding

frontier of ecology research.

The former Ocean Meadows Golf Course will be restored to its natural state and ultimately feature open space, trails, and boardwalks for public access and passive recreation. It will also serve as a research and teaching outpost.

in fact, the center itself was

considered an innovative advancement

at the time of its launch in 1995, and has

since inspired similar synthesis centers

worldwide.

most intriguing yet: making over its

new funding from the Gordon and

nCeAS to do just that. A $2.4 million,

three-year grant will help cover the

center’s operating costs through 2015 —

and see the launch of new initiatives to

ensure its viability, and relevance, far into

the future. Among them: a collaboration

Opening Eyes, Offering Perspective

In early 2013, UCSB Arts & Lectures

(A&L) went public with its first-

ever dedicated, major fundraising

campaign as an initiative of The

Campaign for UC Santa Barbara, aiming

to raise $20 million over five years.

Midway through the year, they were

already halfway to that goal.

Key to the momentum were gifts

from Lynda Weinman and Bruce Heavin

as well as their company lynda.com. The

latest generosity from these devoted

supporters of A&L will help build the

Fund for programmatic excellence, a

permanent endowment meant to ensure

the organization’s present and its future.

The married co-founders of lynda.

com, Heavin and Weinman have also

been active in the Council for Arts &

Lectures — and are a regular presence

at A&L’s events on campus and around

Santa Barbara.

“UCSB Arts & Lectures is truly a

world-class organization bringing in

world-class presenters and performers

— and we’re in the fortunate position of

being able to support it,” Weinman said.

“To us it’s one of the great things about

living here, and we want to see that it

can survive and thrive. We’re really proud

to be able to give back in this way.”

Added Heavin: “it really enriches

us and our community and our staff.

it’s also huge to the students of UCSB

because there is so much they can learn

from this. Arts & Lectures is not just

about art or dance or talks. it’s really

about being inspired and learning how

you can apply these things to real world

W H Y T H E A R T S ?

“To us the arts is so important,

because it gives us a better

understanding of the world.

There is so much going on in the

world that is so complex, so hard

to understand, and hard to be

happy about, frankly. I think what

art does is it opens your eyes to

different perspectives and how to

look at things through different

lenses. It’s about understanding people better, and understanding cultures better.

And I think that’s a very important thing to support.”

and real life. it’s for enjoyment too, but

us being a learning organization, i really

look at A&L as a way of learning about

other things, and getting interested in

new ideas.”

Offering free instruction to

dance students, as well

as free performances and

classes in the community,

renowned international dance company

Ballet Hispanico completed a residency

at UC Santa Barbara in 2013. Their

appearance came courtesy of alumnus

John Arnhold ’75, and his wife, Jody, a

veteran dance teacher and a passionate,

lauded advocate for dance education.

A six-figure gift from the Arnholds

funded the weeklong visit that included

outreach to area schools. The arrival

of new York-based Ballet Hispanico

also launched the new season of ¡viva

el Arte de Santa Barbara!, a multi-

organization collaboration to bring free

music and dance from diverse traditions

to venues across the county.

“Ballet Hispanico is the nation’s

premiere Hispanic dance company.

education and community outreach are

a vital part of its mission,” the Arnholds

said. “We are glad the company could

come to Santa Barbara and reach so

many.”

For four years, the Arnholds have

also supported UCSB dance students

participating in the 92nd Street Y Dance

education Laboratory (DeL) Summer

intensive in new York City. They have

given to Gaucho men’s and women’s

tennis and, since 2005, have been

generous benefactors of the english

department where John Arnhold earned

his bachelor’s degree. Their $1.75 million

pledge in 2012 established the Arnhold

endowment for excellence in english

and further funded existing initiatives,

including Arnhold Undergraduate

research Fellows, Arnhold Faculty

research and Teaching Fellows, and

Arnhold Graduate Fellows.

John Arnhold is a member of the

new York campaign committee and a

UCSB Foundation trustee. Jody Arnhold,

a Ballet Hispanico board member,

received the national Dance education

organization’s visionary Award in 2009.

A repeat UCSB Arts & Lectures performer, vocalist Bobby McFerrin has won 10 Grammy Awards and been described both as a “matchless improviser” and a “musical legend.” His 2013 appearance introduced Santa Barbara to his latest project, spirityouall, influenced by the spirituals sung by his father, opera singer Robert McFerrin, Sr.

With members from around the world, the globally renowned Ballet Hispanico preserves and celebrates today’s Latino cultures through innovative artistic collaborations, world-class dance training, and educational outreach.

rowers must apply to participate in

the initiative that pays their annual UCSB

Crew dues in exchange for their tutoring

and mentoring of local schoolchildren in

need. The program was inspired by the

Websters’ dual desire to help athletes

and kids alike.

“We wanted to help the crew

retain their rowers by making it more

possible for students to afford it, and

we wanted to open the possibility to

these young kids that they could also go

to college,” Alec Webster said. “We’re

firm believers in public education and in

a level playing field. nothing makes any

sense if there’s no access for these kids,

if they can’t get an education. We’re

trying to make everybody involved — the

rower-mentors, the kids, the teachers

— a bigger stakeholder, and we think

we can make a difference through the

compounding interest, so to speak, of

that investment.”

The Websters have a similar

pay-it-forward philosophy toward all

their philanthropic endeavors, which

at UCSB also include supporting La

escuelita, a mentorship initiative of

the educational opportunity program.

“The young kids who are being

mentored, they’re seeing examples

in their mentors. They’re seeing

there are people that care and they

have someone to talk to and ask

questions they maybe can’t ask their

parents. Also we’re trying to instill a

little philanthropy in these people.

We hope one day they’ll remember

the help they got and decide they

need to pass it on. You have to

model behavior. Talk about it all you

want, but if you don’t do it you’re

not credible and no one will follow

you. We’re modeling something.”

to support undergraduate work in the

Department of earth Science, aiming to

build new leaders with critical thinking

skills, environmental consciousness,

and an interest in teaching, policy,

advocacy, and field studies that foster

human understanding and responsible

development.

Aiming to boost the research

endeavors of promising early-

career faculty, the Hellman

Foundation has supported

fellowships for assistant professors at

UC Santa Barbara since 2008. Their

latest gift of $918,500 brings to $2.2

million the total amount, to date, that

the foundation has invested in these

emerging experts in diverse disciplines.

Six UCSB assistant professors were

awarded Hellman Fellowships for the

2012-2013 year, enabling in-depth

research on subjects such as topology

and quantum physics; ethnomusicology

and sound studies; theater festivals in

Africa and Brazil; children’s engineering

design; flapping-wing robotics; and

national armies in multiethnic states.

The recipients and their respective

departments were: Cenke Xu, physics;

David novak, Music; Christina McMahon,

Drama; Danielle Harlow, education; Katie

Byl, electrical and Computer engineering;

and Amit Ahuja, political Science.

Since launching the Hellman Fellows

program on campus, UCSB has awarded

54 junior faculty; 12 of them have been

promoted to associate professorships.

Annually there is $225,000 available for

the program at UCSB.

established by Warren and Chris

Hellman and their children in 1994, the

purpose of the Hellman Fellows program

is to support the research of promising

assistant professors who show capacity

for great distinction in their chosen fields.

Assistant Professor Katie Byl’s Hellman Foundation-funded project supported her innovative work in flapping-wing robotics.

Building a Legacy

W H Y T H E R E S E R V E S ?

“It’s a unique resource to have this

field station right where research is

being done here in the mountains.

And understanding that the UC

budget was limited, it makes all the

sense in the world to try to help

that activity be as successful as

possible.”

Paul and Kate Page

The meadow at Valentine Camp and, inset, the entry to Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, the UCSB-run reserves in the Eastern Sierras.

Known for ecological fieldwork

and investigation, and pristine

beauty, UCSB’s natural reserves

in the eastern Sierras are

beloved by scientists and nature lovers

alike. That includes paul and Kate page.

The outdoor enthusiasts and Mammoth

locals are longtime, devoted donors —

of time and money — to both valentine

Camp and Sierra nevada Aquatic

research Laboratory (SnArL).

With a dozen-year history of gifting

cash, goods, and good old-fashioned

elbow grease to the sites that Kate

page collectively refers to as “the gem

of Mammoth,” the couple’s latest

pledge will give SnArL something it has

long been lacking: a proper multiuse

classroom/lecture hall. Some 25 years

after the need for such a space was first

identified, SnArL is getting a high-tech,

future-ready new building to serve as

a lecture hall and gathering place for

scientists, instructors, and students.

“i see this project as completely

evolving the way in which this field

research station will be used in the

future,” said paul page, a retired

technology entrepreneur. “it changes

the dynamics, in my opinion. The

technology is what fascinates me; that’s

my enthusiasm. Classroom technology

is accelerating as fast as the smartphone

revolution. What is state-of-the-art in

classroom tech now, where is it headed,

and how can we provide that in this new

room?”

The new hall will be named for the

pages, in recognition of their lifetime

philanthropy to the UCSB reserves.

That includes their recent irrevocable

estate bequest, which will provide

operational support for SnArL well into

the future. Such planned and deferred

gifts are instrumental in growing the

endowments that will sustain campus

initiatives in perpetuity and create a

legacy for our benefactors.

A Culture of Giving

JUlIA WAlTHER, Class of 2014Majors: Global Studies, Accounting

We are all citizens of this

world and it is our duty

to help one another in

any way we can. For

me, it is essential to give back to the

communities that have helped me, which

is why i taught Speech and Debate at my

former high school after graduating. i

was grateful i had a chance to help guide

students through a pivotal point in their

lives and lead by example.

i will give a gift to UCSB because

i have first-hand knowledge of the

resources provided for students — from

a food bank to a library. These services

have helped me and i know they will

help future Gauchos. Also i want to

make sure UCSB has the means to

maintain the quality education that i

have received despite constant threats to

the budget.

There is definitely a culture of giving

among UCSB students. We realize that

attending this university is a privilege

and, as such, we have an even

greater obligation to give back

to the school and community.

education allows people the

chance to learn about the world,

think about its problems, and act

to solve those problems. Giving

to a place of learning is the best

way to ensure that young students

throughout California, and

around the world, will have the

opportunities we have had.

ZAIN KHAN, Class of 2014Major: Biological Sciences

I believe there is an unlimited

amount of good to be done

in the world and everyone

should at least start small,

because all the little things add

up to really make a difference. in

2012, i had the opportunity to go

to Ghana on a medical mission

with UCSB alumnus Dr. Michael

Koch ’89, which provided me with the

eye-opening experience of a lifetime. i

learned that giving one’s time is just as

important as any monetary contribution

because it is appreciated so much by the

recipient.

UC Santa Barbara does a lot for

its students. Alumni play a big part in

that by providing resources that allow

the university to give us so much. And i

believe it is our responsibility to do the

same for future generations. i would not

be the person i am now without all my

experiences at this university. no matter

what my financial situation in the future,

i will always set aside something to

contribute to UCSB because i know how

much it benefits students.

Lancaster societyUC Santa Barbara is grateful for the support of our alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations and the UC Santa Barbara Foundation Trustees. Amongst our generous benefactors, the Lancaster Society encompasses donors who have contributed $100,000 or more to the university over time. These distinguished members serve as a model for philanthropic leadership and commitment; undoubtedly, our Lancaster Society members are helping to build UC Santa Barbara’s reputation for teaching, research, and public service. The Society is named after Louis and Winifred Lancaster, civic-minded philanthropists who were committed to public partnership. During their lifetimes, the Lancasters helped establish the UC Santa Barbara Foundation and worked tirelessly to build meaningful bridges between the university and the community. Their vision is sustained through the loyal generosity of today’s Lancaster Society members.

Legacy Circle

The Legacy Circle honors alumni, friends, faculty, and staff who have included UC Santa Barbara in their estate plans through some form of planned gift. Membership in the society is extended to those who have communicated to the university their intention to make a gift through a bequest, charitable trust, charitable gift annuity, pooled income fund, life insurance, retirement fund, or a gift of property with a retained life estate. The following generous donors are providing the legacy of support that will enable UC Santa Barbara to continue to grow and excel.

Chancellor’s Council

The Chancellor’s Council, UC Santa Barbara’s premier annual giving program, recognizes donors of $1,000 or more to the university. These gifts are essential to maintaining campus excellence, and may be restricted to support a specific department or unrestricted for use where the need is greatest. We appreciate alumni, friends, parents, and trustees of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation for their ongoing partnership and commitment to the future of this institution.
