UCCS College of Business
Ethics Leadership Speaker Series
February 19, 2013
February's Ethics Speaker Event, with 150 attendees on the UCCS campus, was co-sponsored by the College of Business Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative and the Colorado Ethics in Business Alliance (CEBA) .
Air Force General (retired) Victor E. “Gene” Renuart, a 39 year Air Force veteran who led NORAD and commanded the 76th Tactical Fighter Squadron, spoke on the “Ethics of Command”. General Renuart, a decorated U.S. Air Force general and former commander of the North American Aerospace Defense command, shared his experiences and the lessons he learned about leadership during his long and distinguished career.
“In his daily life, Gene Renuart exemplifies a cornerstone of leadership and ethical decision making,” Venkat Reddy, dean, UCCS College of Business, said. “He related his experiences in the military and business to the principles of the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative and demonstrated how these principles can become part of our everyday lives.”
Renuart’s Air Force career culminated as commander of NORAD and US Northern Command. In this position, he was responsible for providing for the homeland defense and defense support to civilian authorities for the United States and for partnering with Canada and Mexico in North American security issues. He was also responsible for building the interagency cooperation necessary to support more than 55 government partners and 53 states, districts, and territories.
Since retiring, General Renuart serves in the private industry sector as a consultant on military matters, homeland security, energy, and leadership. He serves both locally and nationally as a member of various philanthropic boards, as an advisor to local Colorado Springs industry, and is a member of Gov. Hickenlooper’s Colorado National Defense Strategy Council.

NEWSLETTER
The annual National Character and Leadership
Symposium brought together scholars, military leaders,
corporate executives, and world-class athletes among
others in order to explore a character related theme based
on the United States Air Force Academy’s institutional
outcomes. The three-day symposium provided the
opportunity for Academy personnel, visiting
university students and faculty, and community members
to experience dynamic speeches and take part in group
discussions in order to enhance their understanding of the
importance and challenges of sound moral character and
leadership.
The best leaders tell great stories which energize,
enlighten and equip others for action. At NCLS, speakers
orient leaders to see themselves and their world
differently, recognize opportunities for character and
leadership development, and emerge as great leaders
whose decisions and actions will shape a better future.
UCCS had 10 students, one faculty, and one staff attend.
Four selected UCCS undergraduate students stayed on
the academy with the cadets in order to gain the full expe-
rience,

Vincent Stanley, Patagonia's vice president of marketing
and co-author of "The Responsible Company," spoke
about environmentally responsible business practices as
well as Patagonia's mission statement to "build the best
product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to
inspire, and implement solutions to the environmental
crisis."
The program was open to all UCCS students, faculty and
interested community members for his talk and the
reception that followed allowed for one-on-one queries.
Over 98 attendees were engaged in a lively interactive
Q&A with questions regarding best practices and lessons
learned. One question in particular revealed the culture
of change from “surfer/climbing dudes” to an internation-
al ethical corporation was at times haphazard and full of
missteps that generated the inspiration for employees
and owners that are enjoyed at the firm today.
Stanley described steps businesses large and small can
take to thrive in uncertain times while reducing social and
environmental damage. His speech included strategies
to improve the quality of a business, ways to reduce
harm, and how companies can impart meaningful work
to their employees. Mr. Stanley, nephew of Patagonia
founder Yvon Chouinard, has worked for the company
since its inception in 1973.
A student committee in the College of Business conceived
and drafted an Honor Code that will be launched in the
College of Business in Fall of 2013. Students will strive to
build successful futures with PRIDE:

In cooperation with the UCCS
Student Chapter of Center for
Public Trust, Ann Tenbrunsel
spoke of when confronted with an
ethical dilemma, most would like
to think they would stand up for
their principles. Unfortunately,
people are often not as ethical as
they think. In Blind Spots: Why
We Fail to Do What’s Right and
What to Do About It, leading business ethicists Max Bazer-
man and Ann Tenbrunsel examine the ways we overesti-
mate our ability to do what is right and how we act unethi-
cally without meaning to.
During a student workshop, 38 students heard about the
nature of ethical failures in the business world and beyond.
By recognizing how people fail ethically, Ms. Tenbrusel was
able to illustrate to students how they can become more
ethical, thereby bridging the gap between who they are and
who they want to be.
Ms. Tenbrusel also spoke about how ethical standards shift,
how we neglect to notice and act on the unethical behavior
of others, and how compliance initiatives can actually pro-
mote unethical behavior. She facilitated student understand-
ing of their "should self" (the person who knows what is cor-
rect) from their "want self" (the person who ends up making
decisions) that causes questionable actions.
February 26, 2013
The case revolved around a business dilemma that had an
ethical problem that needed to be resolved. Each team was
asked to identify the key stakeholders, as well as the
financial, legal, and ethical considerations that had to be
taken into account while finding a solution to the business
dilemma at hand. Teams were asked to assume a particular
identity (e.g., company employees and/or consultants) and
then offer solutions and/or recommendations to a specific
identified target audience (e.g., company executives and/or a
board of directors) on how the business should proceed.
Presentations were 15 minutes long followed by 10 minutes of
Q&A from the judges.
The judges included
representatives from
the Colorado Springs
City Council, Harris
Corporation, and local
businesses. The top
finishers were as
follows:
1st Place: Wesley Walters & Brett Drefs
2nd Place: Kayla Ross & Chelsy Hodge
3rd Place: Cory Coverdell & Julia Webb
The following teams are recognized for their participation:
Craig Prue & John Anthony Amis
Scott Griffee & Leighna Hubbard
Jessica Sandoval & Chelsey Muth
Hussain Albahrani & Ian Brands
Second City Communications RealBiz Shorts now available for UCCS Faculty and Instructors
Why not address important issues
through funny, engaging videos?
The UCCS Ethics Initiative has now
made available to faculty the
Second City Communications (SCC)
RealBiz Shorts– a series of short,
funny, cutting-edge videos designed
to help improve the understanding of
ethics and compliance cultures by using social learning tech-
niques to draw attention to key policies and resources, increase
retention through their messaging, and change perceptions
around these important issues.
Studies show that humor is able to increase the message heard,
retained and shared. These shorts reflect common challenges
that are happening in the workplace and across industries. A
College of Business faculty member has already remarked that
“these [videos] have been beneficial for me.”

luncheon is still to occur.

academic honesty results. During the workshop the why, how,
research questions, methodology and the subsequent graduate and
under graduate results showing the top 5 values, as well as
implementation ideas were explored.
February 13th
Ethics Fellow Robert Hirschfeld, PhD presented “Cases as Means of
Understanding How to Apply Ethical Concepts”. Various ethics cases
were reviewed through the lens of implementation in the classroom
and the resulting experience.
March 11th
Ethics Fellow Albert Batten, PhD presented, “Do You Really Know
your Ethics?” Attendees were asked to review their own ethical
viewpoints and were challenged to do an ethics audit to see how
relevant those viewpoints still are. The workshop challenged faculty to
ask themselves whether their viewpoints were still current or whether
an update to their personal philosophy was required.
