What is Information & Communication Studies
about?
! Faster, smaller, and cheaper devices with an ever-growing range of applications and functions
! Global network of devices linked throughout the world
! Social media, apps, text, email connecting people 24/7
! Information is now:
● Inexpensively produced in multiple interactive formats ● Created and transmitted by individuals and groups ● Rapidly disseminated, over great distances ● Increasingly personalised and filtered
The result?
Digital Information Revolution
We live in an information intensive and information pervasive society
The collective sum of the world’s data is expected to
grow to 175ZB (zettabytes) by 2025
1ZB = 1 trillion GB
“If one were able to store 175ZB onto BluRay discs,
then you’d have a stack of discs that can get you to
the moon 23 times […] Even if you could download 175ZB on today’s largest hard drive,
it would take 12.5 billion drives” (Patrizio, 2018)
“false, often sensational, information disseminated under the guise of news reporting”How do you know
if what you read, hear or view is
TRUE?
! The information glut - how do you find relevant information, when so much is produced on a second-by-second basis?
! Which sources of information do you use for different situations? How do you find information that is accurate and true? How can you identify Fake News?
! How do you communicate with others? Has face-to-face communication become less important than online?
! The Digital Self: How do you present yourself online? On social media?
! Cyber-safety & ethics: How do you protect your privacy online? Do you respect others’ privacy? What about Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Challenges of the Digital Age
! Information & Communication Studies will help you to make sense of a world that is suffused with digital technology and information in all formats – what are the societal, cultural, political and economic effects of the digital revolution? What does it mean for your life?
! It will allow you to explore the interplay of people, information, technology and social structures, and discover new ways that information can contribute to your career goals, an organisation’s success and societal inclusion
