HISTORICAL POSTSEASON The UCLA baseball team advanced to NCAA postseason play for the third consecutive season, the first time in which the Bruins baseball program has accomplished that feat. UCLA went 1-2 at the Malibu Regional in 2006. The Bruins swept the Long Beach Regional in 2007 before dropping both games at the Fullerton Super Regional that June. In 2008, UCLA went 2-2 at the Fullerton Regional, advancing to the regional finals. UCLA defeated Virginia, 3-2, in the regional opener and downed national No. 5-seed Cal State Fullerton on the second night, 11-4. The Titans bounced back with an 11-8 win on Sunday evening, forcing a decisive game seven on Monday night. UCLA dropped the elimination contest, 5-4, at Goodwin Field. MURPHY ON THE MOUND Left-hander Tim Murphy helped lead UCLA’s late-season push for a postseason berth, carrying a 16.2 scoreless inning streak into NCAA Regional action against VIrginia (May 30) before extending that streak to 22.0 innings. Murphy tossed a complete game shutout in a crucial series-opening game at California (May 23), totaling 10 strikeouts in nine innings. The previous Friday, Murphy limited Washington State to two hits in seven scoreless innings, logging eight strikeouts (May 16). Murphy earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors three times and became the first Bruin to hurl two or more complete games in one season since 1983 (Jeff Pries). Murphy was selected in the third round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. DOING IT ALL Second baseman Alden Carrithers led the Bruins at the plate with a .377 batting average and earned team Most Valuable Player honors. Carrithers became just the sixth Bruin since 1960 to lead UCLA in batting average in back-to-back seasons. One of 50 Golden Spikes Award semifinalists, Carrithers finished the 2008 season among the Pac-10 leaders in several offensive categories – sixth in average (.377), fifth in on-base percentage (.484) and hits (84), third in stolen bases (17), eighth in walks (40) and ninth in hit-by-pitches (11). Carrithers’ two-year career batting average of .364 ranks as the sixth highest average in school history. As a senior, the Portland, Ore., resident tallied 24 multiple-hit efforts, including five four-hit games. HAERTHER HITS IT FARTHER First baseman Casey Haerther capped off a strong sophomore campaign by belting two home runs in the final three NCAA Regional games before earning All-Tournament Team accolades. Haerther batted .324 as the Bruins’ starting first baseman, logging team highs with 12 home runs, 52 RBI, 23 doubles, 138 total bases and a .580 slugging percentage. Haerther’s 23 doubles ranked second-most among all Pac-10 performers (behind Ike Davis’ 26 doubles). The Chatsworth, Calif., resident keyed his season by setting Pac-10 and UCLA single-game records with seven hits in a 7-for-7 effort at then-No. 6 Arizona (March 29). Haerther totaled four doubles, three singles, four runs and four RBI in a 20-8 win in Tucson, Ariz. THE ARMS RACE UCLA’s pitching staff totaled a 4.45 earned-run average, the fourth-lowest mark among nine Pac-10 Conference teams. In Pac-10 games, the Bruins posted a conference-best 4.29 ERA. Led by left-hander Tim Murphy (5-6, 3.34 ERA, 111 K), the Bruins’ pitching staff logged 442 strikeouts in 540.1 innings (7.4 per nine innings). Murphy earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors three times, and right-handed reliever Jason Novak was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week once. Murphy was complemented in the rotation by sophomores Charles Brewer (9-4, 5.10 ERA, 69 K) and Gavin Brooks (6-3, 5.07 ERA, 62 K). Left-hander Brendan Lafferty made a team-high 33 appearances, logging a 3.74 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 67.1 innings. TOP RELIEVER Left-hander Brendan Lafferty led the Bruins with 33 appearances, all in relief, becoming the first Bruin since 1987 to lead UCLA in appearances (Bill Wenrick led the Bruins in 1985, 1986 and 1987). Lafferty registered 56 strikeouts in 67.1 innings, the fourth-highest total in each category on the staff. Lafferty, who earned team Most Valuable Pitcher honors, registered a 4-3 record and 3.74 ERA, limiting the opposition to a .254 batting average. Lafferty made the fourth-most appearances among any Pac-10 pitcher and the most by any UCLA pitcher since Rob Henkel pitched in 34 games in 1997. Lafferty’s most dominant outing came at USC on March 2, when the left-hander hurled five scoreless innings in relief to record the victory. IRONMAN AT SHORTSTOP Brandon Crawford started at shortstop in all 61 games, recording a .302 batting average, 13 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 51 RBI as a junior in 2008. Over the past three seasons, Crawford has started all 179 games, making 177 starts at shortstop and two as the designated hitter. The Pleasanton, Calif., resident was one of five Bruins to earn All-Tournament Team honors at the Fullerton Regional, going 6-for-16 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI and five runs in four games. Crawford, a talented five-tool shorstop and cornerstone recruit of John Savage’s first recruiting class in 2006, was selected in the fourth round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants as the 117th overall pick. UCLA BASEBALL – 2008 SEASON NOTES

roAD WArriorsThe Bruins finished the season with a 15-14 mark away from Jackie Robinson Stadium (13-14 road record, 2-0 neutral mark). UCLA won three of four Pac-10 series in 2008 after having won two of three games at California in the team’s final three regular-season games. With that series victory, UCLA became the only team in 2008 (third team in three years) to win a three-game series at California – the Golden Bears totaled a 21-7-2 home record. UCLA opened Pac-10 play at Arizona (March 28-30), handing the Wildcats their only home series loss – Arizona finished with a 25-5 home record. UCLA became the second team in the past two seasons to win a three-game series at Arizona (USC, 2007). The weekend of April 25-27, UCLA won two of three games at Washington, where the Huskies had previously recorded an 18-5 home record.

TUrNiNG TWoUCLA’s defense finished the season having turned 65 double plays, tied with Stanford for the most among any Pac-10 team. Solidified up the middle by shortstop Brandon Crawford and second baseman Alden Carrithers, that duo helped turn 38 double plays in 2008. Additionally, the Bruins’ defense registered the highest caught stealing percentage in the Pac-10 (44.9 pct). Veteran catchers Ryan Babineau and Brent Dean, along with the Bruins’ pitching staff, helped nail 31 of 69 attempted base stealers. UCLA and Washington State each registered 31 runners caught stealing, the second-highest total among all Pac-10 teams.

TEAM CApTAiNsThe 2008 season marked the first year under head coach John Savage in which the Bruins officially named team captains. Juniors Ryan Babineau, Jermaine Curtis and Tim Murphy have served as team captains in 2008, after having led UCLA to the postseason as freshmen in 2006 and sophomores in 2007. Babineau played in 161 career games in three seasons, making 155 starts, as UCLA’s primary catcher. Curtis was a major spark at third base and at the plate for UCLA since arriving in Westwood in the fall of 2005, toatling a .321 career batting average in 147 games (141 starts). Murphy spent his freshman season as an outfielder before excelling on the mound in 2007 and 2008. As a pitcher, Murphy logged a career 4.34 ERA and 10-10 record, compiling 207 strikeouts in 178.1 innings.

Top CLAssEsUCLA’s success the past three seasons can be largely attributed to head coach John Savage’s first full recruiting class, a group of student-athletes who enrolled at UCLA in the fall of 2005 and completed their first season in 2006 (10 of those players remain on the team). Savage’s first recruiting class at UCLA was ranked fifth-best in the nation by Baseball America. Anchored by starters such as Brandon Crawford, Jermaine Curtis, Ryan Babineau, Tim Murphy and Cody Decker, this group of freshmen in 2006 helped lead UCLA to the Malibu Regional at Pepperdine. Savage’s second recruiting class was ranked No. 13 by Baseball America (first played in 2007), and his most recent class was tabbed No. 7 by the publication.

sENior LEADErsUCLA’s four seniors played integral roles on the team in 2008. Second baseman Alden Carrithers (.377 avg, 5 HR, 47 RBI) led UCLA at the plate all season and displayed power with five home runs and 15 doubles. Catcher Brent Dean (.278 avg, 1 HR, 11 RBI) started 26 games behind the plate, alternating time with junior Ryan Babineau. Outfielder Brady Dolan (.287, 2 HR, 18 RBI) started 35 games in the outfield, and hit at a .333 clip in the Fullerton Regional, going 5-for-15. Outfielder Mickey Weisser (.247 avg, 2 HR, 17 RBI) went 3-for-4 in the Bruins’ regional-opening victory against Virginia and finished his senior season with a .381 on-base percentage in 41 games (27 starts).

2008 MLB DrAFTFive Bruins were selected in the 2008 MLB Draft, including three selections in the draft’s first five rounds. Left-handed pitcher Tim Murphy was chosen in the third round by the Texas Rangers as the 89th overall pick. Shortstop Brandon Crawford was drafted in the fourth round by the San Francisco Giants (117th overall selection). Third baseman Jermaine Curtis was selected in the fifth round by the St. Louis Cardinals (155th overall pick). Second baseman Alden Carrithers was chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the 15th round, and catcher Ryan Babineau was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 17th round.

CoAChiNG MiLEsToNEsUCLA’s fourth-year head coach John Savage earned his 200th career victory on Saturday, May 24, as the Bruins blanked No. 15 California, 7-0. Savage totaled 88 wins in three seasons as the head coach at UC Irvine before registering 112 wins the past four years at UCLA. Savage notched his 100th victory as UCLA’s head coach on Sunday, April 20, in an 8-2 victory over No. 10 Stanford.

NoThiNG BUT ThE BEsTUCLA advanced to the postseason the past three seasons after having played among the nation’s most difficult schedules, as rated by Boyd’s World (strength of schedule rating service, boydsworld.com). The Bruins’ 2008 schedule was ranked the third most-difficult slate in the nation, behind Stanford and Loyola Marymount, respectively. In 2008, the Bruins played 19 games during the regular-season against teams ranked in Baseball America’s weekly top-25 polls. UCLA faced the second-most challenging schedule in 2007 after having played the toughest schedule in 2006, as ranked by Boyd’s World.

EXTrA! EXTrA!UCLA posted a 4-3 record in seven extra-inning games. UCLA lost a 12-inning game, 3-2, to Oklahoma in the nightcap of a season-opening doubleheader (Feb. 23). The Bruins outlasted UC Santa Barbara, 5-4, in 13 innings (Feb. 27) in a five-hour, 35-minute affair. UCLA edged Arizona, 4-3, in 10 innings (March 28) in the Bruins’ Pac-10 season opener. UC Irvine downed the Bruins, 6-5, in 10 innings at Jackie Robinson Stadium (April 8). UCLA used a two-out rally, keyed by Brandon Crawford in the bottom of the 11th inning, to defeat UNLV, 8-7 (April 22). The Bruins defeated Washington State, 7-6, in 10 innings on an RBI-single by Tim Murphy (May 17). In the regular-season finale, California edged the Bruins, 7-6, in 10 innings (May 25).

hEAD CoACh JohN sAVAGErecord at UCLA114-121 (Four years)overall record202-205-1 (Seven years)Through four seasons at UCLA, John Savage has established the Bruins as a perennial national contender. Savage has led UCLA to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history.

In 2006, the Bruins played in the Malibu Regional. UCLA swept

the 2007 Long Beach Regional before advancing to the Super Regional at Cal State Fullerton, UCLA’s first Super Regional since 2000. The Bruins advanced to the Regional Final at the 2008 NCAA Fullerton Regional.

Savage has also made significant strides on the recruiting trail, helping UCLA land three recruiting classes ranked in the top-13 by Baseball America. In the fall of 2005, Savage and his coaching staff unveiled their first recruiting class at UCLA, a group ranked the No. 5 class by Baseball America. His last two recruiting classes have been ranked No. 13 and No. 7, respectively.

Aside from featuring winning teams, outstanding recruiting classes, and consistently challenging schedules, Savage has made significant improvements to Jackie Robinson Stadium. Among the latest upgrades include a new grass field surface, a state-of-the-art backstop, the installation of over 1,000 chairback seats and improved hitting facilities and bullpens.
