During first-year orientation, students are encouraged to join ASDA and they are automatically re-enrolled in subsequent years.Chapter

    UCLA has a publicity committee specifically tasked to encourage further member participation from our classmates, especiallythe first year members who are new to ASDA.

    Through extensive publicizing (described below), all members encouraged to attend events. We have been able to host audiences of over 100 students to many lunch lectures and more than 75% of the student body attended

    the 15th Annual ASDA Vendor Fair.

    Our publicity machine has been very successful in ensuring 100% of members have participated in at least one ASDA event overthe course of the year.

Pre-dental students were given a presentation to encourage them to become pre-dental ASDA members **NEW** The ASDA Pre-Dental Committee has established three different three-part lecture series for pre-dental students

    including:o The Faculty Lecture Series featuring 1) the Chair of Admissions gave his dental school application recommendations2)

    the Chair of Restorative describing the dental school experience, including pre-clinical lab, clinic, and the curriculum asa whole

    o The Student Lecture Series in which dental students gave advice about dental school applications and described theirown dental school experience

    o The Big Sib/Lil Sib Series which provided social mixers and labs in which the dental students could mix with the pre-dental students

    For every event, the Publicity Committee utilizes multiples forms of communication to ensure the student body is aware of ASDAevents and activities.o Such vehicles include email reminders, school-wide intercom announcements, classroom announcements, student-designed event

    fliers, a bulletin board with future and past events posted and our ASDA Chapter website.

    **NEW** We have also recently taken advantage of using the social networking site: facebook.com in order to reach the studentbody. We will send messages and create event pages to keep the student body aware of upcoming ASDA activities.

    Traditional published in the Spring 2009 issue and Industry Impact published in the Summer 2009 issue.

    **NEW** Jason Scott and Matt Ronconi were both appointed to the ASDA Editorial Board this past November and will begintheir terms starting in March at Annual Session.

    ChapterutilizesASDAbranding(includingASDAsignageandtheASDAmemberbenefitPowerPointslide) UCLA ASDA has a 1st Year Enrichment Committee (1st YEC) which annually takes part in the UCLA tabling day where students

    are introduced to ASDA and handed pamphlets & fliers which explain the benefits of joining ASDA. ASDA members wereavailable to answer questions for the incoming class.

    1st YEC also organized a Get to Know ASDA Luncheon. All committee chairs attended and described their committees andtheir activities to the 1st year students who were encouraged to sign-up for their upcoming events.

    UCLA ASDA proudly displays an ASDA banner at all ASDA events. The ASDA logo is used on all ASDA fliers and literature.

    OrganizedDentistryAllseniorsknowhowtojoinADAaftergraduation The California Dental Association (CDA) hosted a lunchtime event in which senior dental students were oriented on the benefits

    of joining CDA and ADA and how to join upon graduating.

    It is the role of the 4th year class representatives to reinforce ADA membership.100percentofmembersconverttoADAmembershipintheyearaftergraduation Each graduating senior is provided with information and is strongly encouraged to join the ADA; however, statistics of thisinformation were not available to our ASDA chapter.ADASUCCESSProgramscheduled&givenforfirst,second,thirdandfourthyears The UCLA administration does not allow ASDA to host the ADA SUCCESS Program. Therefore, the Educational Lecture Series

    Chair implemented a UCLA ASDA modified SUCCESS program in conjunction with Robyn Thomason of the California DentalAssociation.

    o Lunchtime Lectures included: 1) Transitioning to Dental school, 2) CV Writing, 3) Proper Interviewing, 4)Practice Management and the Practice Support Center provided by the CDA.

    Chapterisinvolvedwithstateand/orlocaldentalsociety **NEW** This year, ASDA members attended a record number of(4) events hosted by CDA including: 1) California Dental

    Student Networking Event, 2) California Dental Student Access to Care Forum (3 and 4 listed directly below)

    **NEW** Legislative Liaison Ryan Abelowitz served on the organizing committee for the CDA Annual Scientific Session inAnaheim, CA in May 2009. Over 400 vendors were present, which offered a unique opportunity for ASDA members to beexposed to a multitude of dental products not available to us in our clinic.

    o Over 100 UCLA ASDA members attended the event, many of whom served as volunteers for the UCLA Alumni Societyfundraiser and networking event.

    **NEW** Ryan Abelowitz served as a lead organizer of the CDA Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA featuring many topleaders of state, local and student dental organizations including six UCLA ASDA members.

    **NEW** Legislative Liaison Ryan Abelowitz worked with the CDA and took the lead in founding the First Annual CaliforniaDental Student State Lobby Day, to be held in Sacramento, CA March 2, 2010.

    Four UCLA ASDA members serve as student liaisons to the CDA, one from each dental school class: Kyle Petterson, RyanAbelowitz, Lindley Zerbe, and Giancarlo Santos.

    The local component and CDA attend the UCLA exhibitor fair/host booths to answer student questions. Our ASDA chapter works closely with the California Dental Association, coordinating events, seminars, and leadership

    conferences with the organization listed throughout this application.

    ChapterhasvotingrepresentationinthestatedentalsocietyHouseofDelegates Two UCLA ASDA members, Ryan Abelowitz and Kyle Petterson, hold full voting positions in the California Dental Society

    House of Delegates as Student CDA Representatives.

    The CDA reps regularly attend local component meetings. The component doesnt hold formal votes, but the student reps havefull participation privileges in discussions, and they provide extensive input on the student perspective on local and statewideissues.

    Chapterhasrepresentationonstatedentalsocietycouncils. **NEW** For the first time, a UCLA ASDA member, Lindley Zerbe, is serving on the CDA Leadership Development

    Committee.The committee is responsible for:o

    recruitment for leadership positions throughout CDA.o management of CDA leadership conferences and training including selecting keynote speakers and choosing topics

    to address at the leadership training seminars.

    ChapterhasTripartiteGrassrootsMembershipInitiativerepresentative Will Trevor, 4th year ASDA member, serves as TGMI rep. The TGMI rep and Legislative Liaison attended the ADA/CDA Grassroots Training Seminar and reported back to UCLA dental

    students ways to get involved with legislative/advocacy and help local Action Team Leaders.

    The TGMI rep is in continuous contact with Dean Chalios, the Vice President of Public Policy for the CDA, to get updates oncurrent events and policies in Sacramento that impact the dental community.

    The TGMI rep is in open contact with the leaders of the West Los Angeles dental society, relaying pertinent information tointerested dental students.

    Held (6) bi-quarterly meetings open to all students, faculty and staff to discuss current dental related policy and legislationincluding: California Dental Association legislative experts to speak to important issues, meeting with local dental society toaddress various legislative topics, brought in speakers to help learn and practice lobbying techniques.

    Pre-dental events including: Banquet with invited faculty and (2) lectures which included a Meet and Greet with the Chair ofRestorative Dentistry and Chair of Admissions.

    Students attend local component meetings and state meetings with CDA (more details in the Organized Dentistry section). The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee and Golf Committee each include dozens of alumni and faculty.Chapterofferstutoring/mentoring

    **NEW** The ASDA Clinic, Lab and Education Committee (ACLEC) has provided (3) group demonstrations for mostpreclinical laboratory courses including:Operative, fixed prosth, endo, complete dentures, RPD.

    **NEW** ACLEC also designs and develops instructional material for distribution to ASDA members. **NEW** ACLEC also provides opportunities for students to learn about dental products not used in our clinics or labs. UCLA ASDA has a 1st year Enrichment Committee which organizes several tutorials each quarter including 1) Wax n Relax

    with a tooth ID tutorial 2) Drill n Chill 3) didactic tutorials.

    ASDA Pre-Dental Committee has a Big Sib/Lil Sib Series where 1st year dental students assigned to mentor pre-dental students.Chapterorganizesvendorfair

    UCLA ASDA is the sole organization responsible for hosting the Annual Exhibitors Fair. This year featured a record 49 vendorsand raised a record $27,000 (more details listed in Fundraising section).

    **NEW** The Educational Lecture Series (ELS) Committee is tasked with planning and hosting lunch and learn activities forUCLA ASDA and has hosted (10) events so far this year, with more planned for the near future. The titles/topics included: TheSeven Most Common Mistakes when Presenting a Treatment Plan to a Patient, Former President of the Dental Board of CAlectured on standard of care, alumni-led talk on Philosophy of Private Practice.

    o ELS has held (3) lunch and learns with the CDA covering the following topics: 1) CDA Foundations student loanrepayment grant program, 2) Marketing Yourself, 3) How to market yourself & find the right associateship.

    o UCLA ASDA have also had (3) talks regarding pertinent legislative issues including: 1) Licensure by Porfolio by Dr.Ronald Mito 2) Organized Dentistry by Dr. Alan Felsenfeld 3) How to Lobby by Dr. Coulter 4) How AdvocacyCan Protect Your Profession by UCLA ASDA Chapter President Andrew Read-Fuller.

    o Planned events this quarter include: finding employment after graduation, and UCLA OMFS residents will discuss thescope of oral surgery at UCLA.

    Currently, all student groups at UCLA (including ASDA) are prohibited from hosting corporate vendors for lunch and learns.Chapterprovidessocialactivities The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee and the Golf Tournament Committee hosts (2) separate social events. UCLA ASDA has a Dental Olympics Committee which promotes student morale, teamwork, and camaraderie between each

    class. This committee hosts (3) events over two quarters including: Winter Dental Olympic Relays, Spring Dental OlympicsDental Jeopardy and Spring Dental Olympics Lab Challenge.

    Student Morale Committee holds (3) social events over the known as ASDA Loves You Student Breakfasts. Student Morale Committee provides final exam care packages for the students.ChapterinteractswithotherASDAchaptersinregionthroughactivities

    **NEW**In May 2009, UCLA ASDA, for the first time, hosted visiting Pacific students as part of the Clinic Ambassadorsprogram, introducing them to faculty and students.

    **NEW**Hosted and organized the First Annual District 11 Meeting, which included over 50 students from Western, USC,UCLA, UCSF and Pacific. Over 20 UCLA students attended the meeting.

    UCLA Basketball Tournament included invitation to all District 11 ASDA members. UCLA sent a record number of students to 2009 Annual Session, 2009 Western Regional ASDA meeting, and 2010 Lobby Day.Details throughout other sections.Chapterparticipatesincommunityorhumanitarianactivities

    The UCLA ASDA Community Service Committee coordinates a large number of events each quarter including: Heal the BayBeach Clean Up, Holiday Canned Food Drive, Spring Cleaning Clothes Drive For Haiti, Valentine Day Card Making, Give KidsA Smile Day, ASDA Halloween Health Fair, ASDA Thanksgiving Health Fair, Visit to Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood, Visitto Boys and Girls Club of Venice, Westwood Charter School Visit.

    Oral cancer screening at the West LA VA, examining high-risk populations and veterans. Already raised over $10,000 for an oralcancer walk scheduled for April 2011.

    those procedures.o List our clinical requirements in detail, along with a road map and strategies for completion in a timely manner for

    graduation.o Offer explanations and tutorials for navigating the complex patient management software used at UCLA.o Include samples of clinical documentation entries as preferred by various member of the clinic faculty.o Be designed as a living manual for continual improvement as time progresses.

    ASDA 1st year Enrichment Committee organized info sessions for challenging classes such as Physiology where 2nd year studentsgave tips to 1st year students on how to study and succeed in these classes.

    membership All members are able to express concerns during the ASDA All School Meetings or directly to chapter leadership and issues are

    brought before the school administration or appropriate body.

    Class representatives make announcements about all events are serve as the go-to people for class concerns. Students are encouraged to email and consult with the Legislative Liaison whenever they hear about any political issues affecting

    the dental community.

    AttendsStateandNationalLobbyDays Lead all California schools with 34 appointments for the US House of Representatives and Senate Brought a UCLA record attendance of15 students to National Lobby Day 2010 **NEW** Legislative Liaison Ryan Abelowitz spearheaded the founding of the First Annual California Dental Student State

    Lobby Day with assistance from the California Dental Association (March 2, 2010).

    HoldsADPACdrives UCLA ASDA participated in our Annual ADPAC Drive this year in the month of January. As part of our ADPAC drive, we hosted speakers at several lunch meetings including:

    o CDA Speaker of the House, Dr. Alan Felsenfeld.o Former Vice-Chair of the Dental Board of California, Dr. Ronald Mito.

    Attainsatleasta20%ADPACmembershipwithinchapter In this years ADPAC drive, UCLA received contributions from over 200 students, representing 61% of our membership. Our

    highest total ever!

    PresentASDAsinitiatives,suchasAccesstoCareandMidlevelProviders,tomembers May 15, 2009 featured a presentation from UCLA ASDA President Andrew Read-Fuller regarding pertinent issues facing the

    dental profession including Access to Care and Mid-level providers.

    FundraisingChapterconductsoneormoreorganizedeffortsatearningmoney

    Total of four fundraising events this past year UCLA ASDA organized an extremely successful Vendor Fair on January 13, 2010 which included a record 49

    vendors.o 300 UCLA students, faculty, staff, alumni, and pre-dental students as well as members of the Western Los

    Angeles Dental Society attended the fair.

    o Over $3500 worth of prizes were given away in the raffle drawing which occurred during the fair. The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee incorporates a t-shirt sale into its annual event. The Golf Tournament Committee raises thousands of dollars by selling sponsorships for each hole of the golf course

    at which the tournament is held.

    **NEW** This year, UCLA ASDA initiated a joint fundraiser with PDSOP (the UCLA predental society) sellingtoothbrushes and Crest Whitestrips.

    Chapterseffortsatraisingmoneyaresuccessful

    In January 2010, the UCLA ASDA Vendor Fair generated over $27,000 in revenue. **NEW** The UCLA ASDA Toothbrush and Whitestrip Fundraiser generated $1,200 in revenue. In addition, UCLA

    PDSOP (predental society) raised over $1000 in the event.

    The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee raised $600.

    Golf Committee raised $7000 in spring 2009. Total fundraising of $35,800 from 2009-2010over $100 dollars of fundraising per member!Chaptersfundraisingcontributestoannualexpenses

    UCLA ASDA Fundraising provides the sole source of revenue for UCLA ASDA for the entire year. Some examples for which money has been used include:

    o It provides funding for all ASDA sponsored trips: Western Regional Meeting, National Dental StudentLobby Day, Annual Session.

    o It provides funding for all Lunch and Learn events. All other ASDA hosted events mentioned throughout the Ideal ASDA Application. Chapter funds subsidized over $650 in ASDA national dues in order to reduce member expenses.

    PredentalMembershipChapterrecruitspredentalmembersfornationalASDAmembership UCLA ASDA has a Pre-Dental Committee which works with the Pre-Dental Student Outreach Program (PDSOP). PDSOP is the pre-dental club at UCLA and has 91 active members. The ASDA Pre-Dental Committee presented the benefits of pre-dental ASDA membership.Chapterintroducespredentalstodentalschoolandorganizeddentistry(ASDAandADA)

    The ASDA Pre-Dental Committee includes three separate lecture series to provide a complete picture of dentistry. These includethe Faculty Lecture Series, Student Lecture Series, and Big Sib/Lil Sib Series.

    The Faculty Lecture Series included:o Chair of Admissions who explained how to best prepare your application.o Chair of Restorative Dentistry spoke about pre-clinical lab, clinic, and the curriculum.

    The Student Lecture Series included:o Pre-Dental Survivor Series in which first-year dental students described how they personally got into dental

    school in addition to application advice.o A Day in the Life of a UCLA First Year Dental Student given in Spring 2009 and Winter 2010.

    The Big Sib Lab Series included:o Mentorship Banqueto Pass-me-down Lab with dental students teaching Class I preps to Pre-Dental students

    The Pre-Dental Student Outreach Program (PDSOP) has an executive cabinet with a President, Vice President, Treasurer, andSecretary.

    The PDSOP cabinet works closely with the Pre-Dental Committee Chair with quarterly meetings to communicate the needs of thepre-dental students.

    The ASDA Fundraising Committee Chair worked with the PDSOP cabinet to organize a combined fundraiser in which they solddental supplies to fundraise for both ASDA and PDSOP. The most successful fundraiser was awarded the UCLA ASDA OralHealth Awareness Award.

    Chapterprovidesnetworkingopportunitiesforpredentalswithdentalstudentsandlocaldentists The ASDA Pre-Dental Committee uses the Big Sib/Lil Sib series to help form solid connections between the first year dental and

    the pre-dental students with the events listed above.

    In addition the 3-part Student Lecture Series always concludes every lecture with the dental and pre-dental students breaking upin small groups.

    The 15th Annual ASDA Vendors Fair provides an opportunity for pre-dental students to interact with both UCLA Alumni andmembers of the Western Los Angeles Dental Society.

    Chapterprovidesmentorshipsforpredentals Each year the Pre-Dental Committee Chair and the Pre-Dental Student Outreach Program (PDSOP) cabinet work together to

    match pre-dental students with first year dental students as a part of the Big Sib/Lil Sib program.

    **NEW** This year the Big Sib/ Lil Sib program has been expanded into a 3-part interactive series including a dinner, labsession, and finally an application help session

    Pre-dental students have also been encouraged to participate in health fairs organized by ASDAs Community Service Committeeincluding Give Kids a Smile.

    **NEW** Two members of our chapter, Amir Chalak and David White founded a SPEC chapter in Fall 2009. **NEW** During UCLAs annual Tabling Day, SPEC and ASDA set up a joint display inviting the entire student

    body to learn more about SPEC and its mission with support from ASDA leaders.

    UCLAs ASDA is intimately involved with UCLAs SPEC, which held a lunch and learn presentation by JudgeStephen Hjelt of San Diego.

    UCLA ASDA will be co-sponsoring the Winter Quarter event with UCLAs chapter of the Student Professionalismand Ethics Club.

    We expect around 150 students to attend a presentation by the Chair of Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Richard G.Stevenson in early March.

    Faculty is intimately involved with activities supporting ethics instruction at UCLA. Dr. Carol Bibb, Dean of Student Affairs and Dr. Ronald Mito and Dean of Clinical Sciences, serves as a mentor for

    Dean of Student Affairs sends quarterly reminder of Code of Ethics Not only do we have two of the assistant deans as mentors for UCLAs SPEC chapter, but we will be hearing

    presentations from a few of them in the coming months.
