QUARTERLY

WINTER 2013, VOL. 3

Page 2: UCLA WRAA QUARTERLY Vol. 3

It’s the beginning of a new year, and though we might

be focused on our personal goals for the months ahead, I’d like to take a moment to thank you all on behalf of the WRAA officers for a great first year

in 2012. It has been a bit of an uphill battle getting

WRAA off the ground, but after our first 12 months, I’m happy to say that we’ve gained some momentum and continue to grow with every new club event. That’s

thanks to you folks who have come out to games, BBQs, and supported the club through your dues and participation in fundraisers. We started the year with a forest of red tape and scattered contact information for hundreds of potential alums and affiliates. We ended it with the Alum Weekend and our first t-shirt fundraiser (see more info, later this issue), which so far has been a success in raising money for the current team! It’s been a pleasure for us officers to get this tradition started and we’re excited to see new leadership—officers who will surely raise the bar and make this alum group stronger than it is now. As a club we’ve got lots of ambition, and there’s no holding us back once we gain even more momentum!

I hope that most of you were able to take part in a club activity this year, in one form or another. If not, we hope to see you in the years to come, and we’ll always welcome your offers to help! It’s been fun for me to reconnect with you all this year. I rediscovered how UCLA Women’s Rugby played a significant role in my life, and realized the importance of continuing that tradition for future bruins. So, I urge you all to come out and be a part of this club. To support women’s rugby at UCLA, to stay connected with other alums, and to have a good time doing it.

Yours in rugby, Middy, but also Julia, Kelly, and Brittany

A WORD FROM OUR OUTGOINGPRESIDENT, MARISA TICE

Page 3: UCLA WRAA QUARTERLY Vol. 3

I’ll keep it brief, since already most everything’s

been said, but as the new WRAA President taking over from Middy, I’d like to welcome you all to 2013!

Some goals we hope to make progress on this year

include, most importantly, achieving NCAA status for the current club. UCLA bureaucracy being what it is, things are still in progress, but progress is happen-ing! The proper papers have been submitted and there will hopefully be a review of our application sometime this spring.

We also want to continue to work on getting more people out to events, building our network of alumnae and strengthening connections, doing some exciting fundraisers (an update on the t-shirts later on in this issue...), and getting our history committee kickstarted.

Lastly, a warm welcome to our new officers: Laura Hurley as super-dooper VP, Dara Yung as fancy-schmancy Treasurer, and Michelle Kwandham as our inimitable new Secretary. We’re all excited and looking forward to getting the WRAA a little further off the ground this year.

Hope to see you at the home games this spring!

I wanna live a life of danger,

Julia

2012 UCLA WRAA ALUMNAE GAMESATURDAY, DECEMBER 8THBY KELLY GRIFFIN

Despite rain the day before the UCLA WRAA Alumnae game was fun for all. The Alumnae side had exactly 15 players to start plus a half dozen alumnae supporters cheering on the side. The last 10 minutes of the game the Alums brought in ringer Lisa Rowe in her khaki pants and sneakers! The fans participated in a half-time expedition game with the youth Hollywood School House Flag Rugby team. The Bruins put of a good fi ght but the experience and size of the Alumnae squad was too much for the current Bruins. Perhaps next year the current team will break the Alumnae’s 3 year winning streak?

Post game the festivities were moved to the Rowe-Vath house for a BBQ. Delicious steak donated by Julia Chui was grilled to perfection by Lisa Rowe. I am pretty sure the alumnae won the helicopter pilot competition too!

A big thanks goes out to everyone who helped organize the game (especially Marni Vath, Lisa Rowe and Julia Notar plus our awesome ref Gary Patterson). And, thanks to all the players, current and past who came out for the event! We are looking forward to next year!

ALUMNAE ONLY TOUCH 7s AND SOCIALThis is a new event for us this year. After the last UCLA home game, this alumnae only event is for networking, fundraising, reminiscing... and some rugby, of course! The Bruins are looking at their funds for nationals, and with the potential for an extra trip to Albuquerque for a Western/Pacifi c seed playoffs even before Sweet 16s, we want to get everyone together to help them out! There will be a small fee (TBA) to participate that will go straight to the team’s fund for Nationals. More information coming soon -- watch your email!

TOURNAMENT

UCLA had a great pre-season start at the Stanford Tournament this January. Losing only to Stanford in pool play, they beat Cal, Davis, and Santa Barbara to go on to challenge Chico in the fi nal. It was a hard fought match that saw Chico eke out the advantage and take it, 15-7. Still, a great start for the Bruins and looks like 2013 is going to be a very exciting season!Day 1 Results:

DID YOU KNOW?

One of the major goals of this group is to support the current team’s bid for NCAA status, and there is good news! According to team president Diana Nguyen, the

team’s application and all the necessary paperwork have been submitted by Jason Zeck, head of UCLA Club Sports,

to the bigwigs in the UCLA Athletics offi ce.

This is great news for us and for the team. Hopefully, a decision will be forthcoming sometime this spring, but in

the meantime let’s keep showing our support for the current Bruin Rangers!
