Central Oklahoma will compete as an NCAA Division II indepen-dent in all sports during the 2011-12 school year before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocition in 2012-13.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institu-tions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first orga-nized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 99 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, bas-ketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercol-legiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Ath-letics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA re-organized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

The Mid-aMeriCa inTerCOllegiaTe aThleTiCs assOCiaTiOn

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retire-ment in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 sea-son and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood.

With the departure of Nebraska-Omaha in 2011, the current mem-bership of the MIAA is at 15 schools. UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska Kearney and Northeastern State will begin league play in 2012-13.

sChOOl nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChOOl COlOrs

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. PrOdUCTIOn CredITs

Dax leOneIn his second year as Central

Oklahoma’s head coach is Dax Leone, who is ready to lead the Bronchos back among the NCAA Division II elite.

Leone, who came to UCO after previous stints as a head coach and assistant coach at various levels around the country and in Canada, directed UCO to a 24-23 record in 2011 with wins in 10 of the last 11 games.

A product of Shawnee High School who was a standout pitcher at Seminole State College and Texas, Dax got his coaching start during a three-year stint as the pitching coach/recruiting coor-dinator at East Central.

He helped lead the Tigers to their only Lone Star Conference North Division championship in 2004 and recruited eight All-LSC North Division players during his tenure in addition to coaching 2004 North Division Pitcher of the Year Cory Hall, who had a school-record 1.76 earned run average that season.

Leone was also the head coach of the Kelowna (British Co-lumbia) Falcons of the West Coast Baseball League during the summers of 2003 and ‘04, directing nine all-conference players and leading the team to a 35-21 record and their first-ever divi-sion title in 2003.

Leone spend the 2005 season as pitching coach at St. Gregory’s before becoming pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Seminole.

He was with the Trojans for one season, directing a staff that had a 3.89 ERA, led the NJCAA in strikeouts with 481 in 432 innings and limited opponents to a .235 batting average.

Of the players Leone coached in 2006, eight were drafted and seven went on to sign with a Division I school.

As recruiting coordinator at Seminole, Leone helped the Tro-jans sign a recruiting class ranked in the top 10 by Collegiate Baseball and that featured five drafted players.

Leone went from Seminole to Division I Louisiana-Monroe in August of 2006 and spent three seasons there as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

ULM pitchers posted some of the best seasons in school his-tory under Dax’s tutelage and four of his players were taken in the major league baseball draft.

The Warhawks set a school record for saves (14) during Leone’s first season in 2007 en route to winning 30 games and qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in five years.

In Leone’s second year at ULM, Derek Ward was named to the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year Watch List and finished the year with seven saves, the fourth-most in school history.

Four pitchers earned Louisiana Pitcher of the Week or Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors during that 2008 season, which ended with the Warhawks capturing the conference title in finish-ing with a 34-24 record.

the leOne File

ULM went 32-27 and was runner-up in the conference tourna-ment during Leone’s final season in 2009.

Dax moved on to Oklahoma State for the 2010 season, working with the pitching staff. Three Cowboy pitchers -- Tyler Lyons, Thomas Keeling and Mike Strong -- were taken in the 2010 draft.

A prep standout at Shawnee, Leone started his college play-ing career at Seminole. He went 15-3 during two seasons there while helping the Trojans to a 107-17 record, including a national runner-up finish in 1997.

Leone moved on to Texas in 1999 and went 8-6 that season, including a 6-3 mark in Big 12 Conference games. He was an Academic All-Big 12 pick as a senior in 2000.

arrOw CUnninghamIn his first year as a student assistant coach with the Bronchos is Arrow Cunningham, who finished his playing career

last season.A native of Harrah, Cunningham spent his first two years at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College before ending his

career at UCO. He hit .300 with six doubles and 18 runs batted as a junior and then put together a stellar senior season last spring in earning first-team All-Lone Star Conference and second-team All-South Central Regional honors, batting a team-high .406 -- 10th-best in the league -- with nine doubles and 30 RBI.

Arrow is finishing up his marketing degree.

JeFF steeleIn his first year as Central Oklahoma’s associate head coach is Jeff Steele, who came to the Bronchos in December

after a highly-successful six-year stint as pitching coach at long-time NAIA powerhouse Lubbock Christian. Steele helped the Chaparrals rack up a 290-76 record the past six years while making four national tournament

appearances, capped by a runner-up finish in 2011. LCU’s pitching staff ranked in the top five nationally in strikeouts each of the past four seasons, leading the NAIA

last spring with 487 stikeouts in 471 innings when the Chaparrals finished 50-14. A native of British Columbia, Steele was an All-Conference and All-Region pitcher at Collin County (Texas)

Community College before playing his last two years at Oklahoma Baptist. He was an All-American for the Bison in 2004, posting a 10-1 record with a 3.14 earned run average in 97 innings.

Steele started his coaching career as an assistant at Chattanooga State (Tenn.) Community College, helping the Tigers win 37 games while lowering their team ERA over two runs a game during his lone season there in 2005.

He went to Lubbock Christian the following year and helped the Chaparrals produce five Major League Baseball draft selections as pitchers, with seven pitchers signing professional contracts. Steele spent the past seven summers on the East Coast as a head coach in the Coastal Plains League (summer collegiate league), with more than 50 of his former CPL players having been drafted.

2012 UCO BaseBall

host of returning talent plus a big recruiting haul has Central Oklahoma ready to build on the momentum of last year’s late-season success and take another step forward in 2012. The Bronchos won 14 of their last 17 games in 2011 to finish with a 24-23 mark under first-year head coach Dax

Leone and the confidence gained for that run has UCO aiming for more.Twelve players return from last season -- including five position

starters and five pitchers -- and the Bronchos added 21 newcomers, with many of those expected to have an immediate impact.

“We’re extremely excited about the opportunity this season to compete and feel really comfortable going into our second season here,” Leone said. “The players have a lot better understanding about the system we run and the speed of the game we like to play.

“We feel like we’ve created better depth across the board in recruit-ing, which makes the players play the game with an edge every day.”

Pacing the way is a 12-member senior class that features returning position starters Kevin Blue, Tucker Brown, Derik Grimes, Keegan Morrow and Austin Rycroft along with pitchers Uriah Fisher, Josh Rolan, Aaron Rosborough, and Ryan Wagner.

Those are the ringleaders of a team that possesses the offense, defense and pitching needed to make a serious run at an NCAA Division II playoff berth, though UCO will be competing as an independent this season before joining the Mid-America Inter-collegiate Athletics Association next year.

“This club has a lot of really good athletes and our team speed should be a weapon for us,” Leone said. “These guys understand how to handle the bat very well. Our goal is to be very aggressive on offense at the plate, on the bases and in our bunting game.”

Newcomers will step in and help out at several positions as will as solidify a pitching staff that figures to be a real strength.

“There is no question that our foundation here at UCO will be pitching and defense,” Leone said. “We have a really good blend of returning pitchers who threw a lot of quality innings for us last year and new guys who were solid throughout the fall.

“Our coaches and players are really looking forward to the season. We’re excited about continuing the great tradition here at UCO.”

Here’s a position-by-position look at the Bronchos: CatCher

There’s plenty of depth here, with four players capable of seeing action behind the plate. Junior transfer Eric Garza is an excellent defender at the dish and rates as the favorite to take over the starter’s role, with junior Jordan Corn, sophomore Kaleb Hoffman and fresh-man Tanner Bell all capable of helping out.

First Base

Another position that has several candidates vying for playing time, though senior Austin Rycroft is the leading candidate to be the main guy after slugging 10 home runs while starting mostly in right field last year. Senior Derik Grimes can also play here after spending the majority of his time at third base a year ago when he hit .344 and junior newcomer Edgar Lopez provides additional depth. seCOnD Base

The Bronchos are in good shape here with the return of senior Tucker

A

Tucker Brown

2012 seasOn OUtlOOkBrown, a fantastic defender and also the team’s leading returning hitter after batting .363 with 17 doubles and 32 runs batted in last spring. Se-nior Jacob Zinn and freshman Hunter Marcum provide quality depth. thirD Base

Senior Kevin Blue is slated to take over the bulk of duties at the hot corner after filling the starting role at shortstop most of 2011, when he

hit .287 with eight doubles and 22 RBI. Junior transfer Brayden Little will also be in the mix and

versatile senior Derik Grimes could see some action.

shOrtstOPUCO is counting on senior transfer

Cory Proctor to step in and be the starter here, with junior Brayden Little

ready to contribute.

OUtFielDThere will be a mix of old and new in the outfield,

with a few returners joining several newcomers to fill the three positions.

Senior standout Keegan Morrow is the easy choice in center field role after starting there all last season when he earned second-team All-Lone Star Conference honors after hitting .360 with seven doubles, 27 RBI and 12 sto-

len bases. Junior newcomers J.P. Maples and Cameron Mavroulis appear to be the front-runners in right and left

field, respectively, and both are coming off stellar junior college careers.

Also challenging for playing time in the outfield will be freshman Cooper Ansell, sophomore letterman Mike

Boyle, junior letterman Jordan Mullin and junior transfer Jared Wright.

PitCher

UCO has plenty of options with the pitching staff, featuring

four senior veterans and a sopho-more back from last year plus a host

of new talent ready to make a mark.Three of those returners are slated to be among the main starters in

seniors Uriah Fisher, Josh Rolan and Aaron Rosborough. Fisher started 11 games and was a second-team All-LSC pick last year after going 3-4 with a 3.62 earned run average that was seventh-best in the league, while Rolan and Rosborough both went 4-3 as part-time start-ers. A late-season surge enabled Central Oklahoma to end a two-year string of losing seasons in 2011 when the Bronchos opened the Dax Leone era with a 24-23 record.

Leone took over when long-time head coach Wendell Simmons retired following the 2010 campaign and UCO won 10 of its last 11 games to finish above .500, though the Bronchos failed to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Tourna-ment in their final year in the league.

“We had some ups-and-downs during the season, but I was really happy with the way we finished,” Leone said. “The guys played hard all year and they kept working to get better, so it was good to see that rewarded at the end of the season.”

Leone earned a win in his head coaching debut when the Bronchos opened with a 7-6 victory over Northwood and then UCO lost two of three to West Texas A&M to start league play.

Central went back above .500 on Feb. 15 when it edged Oklahoma Christian 12-10 in the home-opener behind an 18-hit attack, but the Bronchos lost seven of their next eight to fall to 4-9.

2011 seasOn ReviewUCO ended that skid with a 9-8 extra-inning triumph at Science and

Arts of Oklahoma, getting the game-winning solo home run from Austin Rycroft in the top of the 10th.

But the Bronchos couldn’t put a winning streak together and eventu-ally fell to 11-20 before beginning their late surge that saw them win 14 of their last 17 games.

UCO started its turnaround with a wild 15-13 home win over Abilene Christian to salvage the finale in that three-game LSC series and followed with a 6-1 win over USAO at Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Ballpark.

The Bronchos lost two of three on the road at Angelo State before reeling off eight straight wins.

That streak started with a stunning three-game sweep of eventual league runner-up Tarleton State, with UCO getting back-to-back complete games from Uriah Fisher and Jordan Stern to open the series.

The Bronchos finally reached .500 with a 4-1 win over Arlington Baptist to compete a doubleheader sweep, then lost the opener of a three-game season-ended series at Newman before winning the final two to finish 24-23.

JOe mUller

Now in his fourth year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who brought a wealth of Division I experience to the position.

Muller became just the seventh athletic director in school history when he took over the position in July of 2008 after previous stints in the athletic departments at Oklahoma State and Purdue.

Joe served as senior associate athletic director for external relations at Purdue for two years before coming to UCO. He oversaw all facets of external relations while at Purdue, including development, marketing and promotions and the John Purdue Club.

A graduate of Stillwater High School, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from OSU. He served as director of athletic marketing and promotions at OSU from 1985-90 and then was involved in the television industry for more than a decade.

Muller returned to Oklahoma State in 2002 as associate athletic director, serving in that capacity until going to Purdue. His duties at OSU included all development activities of the athletic department, including ticket operations, marketing and promotions and the OSU POSSE fund-raising operation.

Under Muller’s watch, OSU raised over $90 million to renovate its football stadium, set football attendance records in 2003, ’04 and ’05 and had all-sport ticket revenues increase more than 115 percent.

Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew).
