UCS RECRUITMENT

3U C S R E C R U I T M E N T

“UCS Hampstead is a leading London day school that combines the highest standards of academic achievement and pastoral care with outstanding facilities for all-round education with a distinctive liberal ethos.

Founded to promote the Benthamite principles of liberal scholarship and education, UCS believes intellectual curiosity, breadth of study and independence of mind combine to achieve academic excellence; they are not subordinate to it.

Selecting children with no regard to race or creed, UCS fosters in them a sense of community alongside a tolerance of and a respect for the individual. It is a place of study, but also of self-discovery and self-expression; a school that places equal value on learning with others as on learning from others.”

Mark Beard, Headmaster

UCS FoundationUCS Pre-PrepJoining the UCS Foundation in 2002, the Pre-Prep School on the Finchley site provides a happy, supportive, and stimulating environment for boys aged 4-7.

UCS Junior BranchIn the heart of Hampstead Village on the Holly Hill site, the Junior Branch provides pupils with the opportunity to develop academic and personal disciplines, self-confidence, thoughtfulness, and public spirit for boys aged 7-11.

UCS Senior SchoolThe largest single element of the UCS Foundation is the Senior School on the Frognal site. It provides education with an emphasis on supporting individuals to develop knowledge, experience and understanding, a strong sense of values, personal integrity and compassion for boys aged 11-18.

UCS Sixth FormAs part of the Senior School on the Frognal site, the co-educational Sixth Form provides an education which is intellectually stimulating as well as personally satisfying, where pupils progress to university with the confidence and motivation of independent learners. This includes around 40 girls in the Sixth Form every year.

CHRIS REYNOLDS

Joined UCS in 1999 and has been Vice Master since 2004.

“UCS is a unique amalgam of traditional and forward-thinking, and offers excellent career opportunities. Our pupils are happy, engaged and look forward to coming to school; our members of staff are caring, dedicated and intellectually strong. UCS is unashamedly academic, but equally the kindest, most pupil-centric school I have ever encountered.”

Curriculum

Founded to promote liberal scholarship, UCS provides a broad and rich academic curriculum. Our range of subjects allow pupils to keep options open for as long as possible, as well as the ability to personalise their curriculum at an early stage.

In the Lower School, pupils follow a core general curriculum in addition to Drama, Art, Design Technology, PSHE, PE and Games. There is no setting or streaming, except in Mathematics.

For GCSE, pupils study English, Maths, at least one Modern Language and a Science. We aim to ensure that GCSE selection is as open as possible, with pupils deciding for themselves whether their needs are best met by breadth of study or by specialism.

In the Sixth Form, pupils choose four subjects from a choice of over twenty. In addition to subjects offered at GCSE level, Sixth Form pupils can also choose to study Economics, Politics, Philosophy, History of Art, and Psychology. One afternoon a week is devoted to sport and fitness and a further afternoon to an activities programme, with opportunities for community service and academic enrichment.

MARK ENGLISH

Joined UCS in 2014 as Deputy Head (Academic).

“In an academic landscape where uniformity reigns, UCS truly stands apart as an institution which does things its own way and promotes risk taking and innovation in teaching and learning.

We are committed to reflective practice in Teaching and Learning. We offer a bespoke and comprehensive CPD programme, led by UCS teachers, and centred on our four Learning Values of Resilience, Responsibility, Relationships and Resourcefulness. We have also embedded coaching into our programme, and we are currently developing our work on research-led CPD across the curriculum.”

PastoralThe Independent Schools Inspectorateassessed the quality of pastoral support at UCS as excellent and “consistent with the school’s aim to care for all of its pupils as individuals, to be concerned for their emotional well-being, and to help them to develop a similar care and respect for the well-being of others”. UCS is different from many day schools in our commitment to pastoral care. We aim to develop self-confidence, maturity and self esteem and believe that our approach not only leads to good results, but produces well-balanced and assured school-leavers.

Our Deme system - run by a Warden and dedicated team of tutors - ensures pupils receive the best form of pastoral care and there are strong links between the pastoral and academic systems to ensure support is cohesive between subjects.

UCS is fully committed to safeguardingand promoting the welfare of childrenin our care. Those applying for positionsmust undertake an enhanced check forRegulated Activity from the Disclosureand Barring Service (DBS) before a formaloffer of employment is made. We alsoundertake checks with previous employers and referees to confirm applicants’ identities and professional records. “UCS has always been a school that prides itself on positive, open and professional relationships between staff and students. As a result it remains an exciting and stimulating place to work both academically and pastorally. I look forward to coming to school as much now as I did all those years ago when I first arrived.”

JESS LEWIS

Joined UCS in 2015 and has been Deme Warden (Olders) since 2017.

“UCS offers its staff as many exciting opportunities as its students. The partnerships programme enables us to build relationships with other schools, share our resources and widen our own, and our students’, perspectives. I have been given the chance to go to Goa on a trip working with a children’s charity, and have accompanied two of the school’s drama productions to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Relationships among staff at UCS are remarkable. Everyone is keen to support each other’s development, share expertise and support colleagues at all stages in their careers. The common room is a place where vibrant conversation is guaranteed, there is always a crossword on the go and there are events where colleagues can play sport, go wine tasting, see comedy and more.”

We offer a wide range of sports, games and fitness opportunities, with Rugby, Football, Hockey and Cricket as principal sports. In addition, facilities and opportunities exist for Tennis, Athletics, Badminton, Cross- Country, Basketball, Swimming, Fives, Table-Tennis, Fencing, Aerobics, Dance, Netball, Karate and Squash.

Sport and team games are an important feature of life at UCS. Our aim is for pupils to enjoy themselves, grow fitter and learn from the exhilaration of shared endeavour. Our commitment to sport and games is illustrated by the extensive multi-million pound redevelopment of our facilities at the playing fields. The new pavillion and changing rooms will be opened in November 2018 to coincide with the completion of the levelling and drainage works carried out on the fields themselves.

IAN THOMAS

Joined UCS in 2015 as a newly qualified teacher in the PE and Games Department.

“I was extremely grateful of UCS to offer me my first teaching post, and oversee my NQT induction programme. I was made to feel very welcome and there is a genuine sense of community about the school. I enjoy the schools individualistic approach, which is promoted through a diverse range of academically enriching activities, and I really did find it easy to make my mark on the schools co-curricular programme. Our continuous improvement to buildings and grounds, such as the new sports pavilion, ensures our facilities are some of the finest in North London.”

REBECCA BAXTER

Joined UCS in 2014 as Head of Drama.

“I immediately felt that UCS was a really interesting place – the pupils are so individual, friendly and warm. It is set in the beautiful leafy Hampstead and I love finding out all its bizarre secrets. The pupil who gave me a tour on my interview day loved his school so much. He told me an anecdote about when the school organ wasn’t working, so one boy sang the school song a cappella, before the rest of the school joined in as a community. UCS is truly a unique school.”
