OVERVIEW of application process

Students: - Apply for permission to study abroad (=forhåndsgodkjenning)

- Prepare and submit your UCSD application to NTNU (Instructions follow)

Dale will then:

- Print out a confirmation letter and put in your application

- Scan the application and send it to UCSD with a copy to you

- Return the application to the address given on the cover page

UCSD will then:

- Deduct the application fee from your account, process your application and

let you know if you are accepted

- If accepted, UCSD will send you the paperwork you need (Certificate of

eligibility=COE) to apply for a visa to the U.S.A.

YOU, after receiving your COE, should then:

- Pay the SEVIS fee

- Make an appointment for a VISA interview

- Buy travel insurance, plane tickets etc

- Drop off the application in the reception, 2nd floor, Office of International Relations (NTNU - Trondheim students only)

- Check to make sure you have money in the account the application fee will be deducted from and that there are no regional limitations for USA (= “regionsperre”) on your credit/debit card.

INSURANCE THROUGH HELFO: Approximately two (2) weeks after you have received notice that you will be getting a loan from lånekassen (ie “lånet blir innvilget”) you will receive an insurance card from HELFO. This insurance alone will NOT entitle you to an insurance waiver. The reason for this is that you must document that you have insurance coverage for medical evacuation and the ”HELFO insurance” does NOT include this. TRAVEL INSURANCE typically includes coverage for medical evacuation (ie if you get seriously ill and need to return to Norway immediately.). What is important is to check that the amount of coverage is equal to or exceeds the amount given on the Medical Insurance Verification Form. .ANSA (ansa.no), for example, currently offers a travel insurance that satisfies the requirements set by UCSD. Others do too, so check prices and what’s coverage. If you cannot document insurance coverage that meets the requirements of UCSD you MUST purchase insurance. Note 3: Page A6 – Tuberculosis Questionnaire is due 30 days before published program start-date (send to ipadmission@ucsd.edu). Contact Trondheim Vaccination Control Office.

Proof that you have applied for permission to study abroad/Confirmation letter: When you submit your application either submit an email/letter stating that you have permission to study abroad or a copy of the receipt you received when you submitted your study abroad application. The study abroad application is found on: Point 2 on https://innsida.ntnu.no/utenlandsstudier: “SLIK SØKER DU-Søknadsprosessen og søknadsskjema” NOTE! Dale will replace this email/receipt with a CONFIRMATION LETTER. No need to worry.

NTNU Transcript (order this via STUDWEB) Note 1: The transcript from the Fall semester at NTNU must be included when you apply to UCSD for the Fall quarter of following year. In other words, you cannot apply before Christmas if you are applying for the following fall. Note 2: Students who are currently in their second year of a Bachelor’s program must also submit their transcript from upper secondary school (=vgs)

Course list forms for quarters you are applying for. Note 1: See QUICK LINKS for schedule and course list form. Note 2: Use schedule to find out when classes are given. If the listing isn’t available for current year, use the most recent corresponding quarter. Note 3: Fill out the course list form on-line, print , sign and date! Remember 12 courses per quarter. If a course is offered more than one quarter you can list it more than once. Note 4: If you do not have the prerequisites for a course, you cannot list the course (unless you will get the prerequisites while at UCSD)

Statement of Purpose (1 to maximum 2 pages) Explain your reasons for choosing UC San Diego for your study abroad experience. Dale suggests: concentrate on the academic reasons. Note 1: At U.S. institutions a student’s integrity is taken very seriously. For example, if two students submitted an essentially identical essays to a professor as an assignment they would both receive failing grades and it could be terms for leaving the program. UCSD will be reading ALL the applications and it is very easy to see when you have collaborated with someone else. In other words: Write your own statement of purpose.

Documentation of English proficiency e.g. Transcript from upper secondary school (vgs) showing a grade of at

least 4 in English. OK if it is Norwegian, but then you must write subject names in English next to each subject. IF you

Documentation of Funding - Financial Statement from the State Educational Loan Fund https://app.lanekassen.no/forelopiguttalelse/ - NOTE 2016-09-17 With the current exchange rate of 8.3 NOK/USD you do not have enough money with just the support from Lånekassen. You will need to show a bank statement covering the difference in what you receive from Lånekassen and the actual costs. Please see: www.ntnu.no/international/usa/expensesucsd.pdf So, if you plan on attending UCSD for the Winter and Spring quarters, at the current exchange rate you will need to show that you have NOK 52,167 (Fifty-two thousand, one hundred and sixty seven)
