Description:
As part of an energy efficiency campaign in the School of Biological Sciences (BIO), the Sustainability Team has identified key information that could help create a culture of safe, sustainable and secure laboratories at UEA. We confirmed suspicions that a huge single energy user in BIO’s labs is the fleet of ultra-low temperature freezers (commonly called '-80s'). Costing almost £17,000 in total each year, they use the same amount of energy annually as 36 UK households. Find out more: www.tinyurl.com/UEA-freezer-guide

1 The efficiency of ULTs decreases over time, due to loosening seals, refrigerant loss, degraded lubricants,

fatigue in mechanical systems, or poor maintenance. Each year of a ULT’s age translates to approximately 3%

increase in energy consumption.
